Mulligan A Mulligan by definition is an unofficial do-over. In 2008 The Broadmoor hosted the U.S. Senior Open and on the final days, Eduardo Romero rose to the top and took the victory with a 6 under par. Because he was not a commonly known player, I don’t believe many people recognized him, allowing me the fortunate opportunity to congratulate him and shake his hand as he was walking through the lobby with his trophy. This summer The Broadmoor will have a do-over as the host to this great event. However, I would not say it’s a Mulligan, but rather an honor to welcome back the best players in golf to our great city. A lot has changed in our town since 2008. Recently ranked as the second best place to live in America by U.S. News & World Report, our town continues to be front and center in the news and on the national stage, making me excited to see what transpires this summer as the best battle it out on our turf. It was June 1st and the year was 1918 when Spencer Penrose invited the most important people in the state and around the country to celebrate his magnificent new hotel. Known as the Grande Dame of the Rockies, I can’t think of a better venue to enjoy an afternoon of golf. This wonderful sport connects so many of us. Young, old, male, female, it doesn’t matter. Many of us know the sound and feel of a crisp golf shot and it’s like nothing else. As a spectator behind the ropes, golf allows us front and center access to the players. The ability to hear their thoughts, watch their shots from just a few feet away, and glimpse into their stragegy allows for an experience unlike anything else. I’m thankful that my parents taught me the game. Going on to play for my high school team in North Texas, golf has shaped my heart, mind, and discipline - giving back to me more than I could ever repay.

olorado Springs resident Pat Holmes left California to come to Colorado in 1998. Bargaining everything he had, he took out a $750,000 loan to buy a local auto body shop. “The owner had died, the business was failing, and it was the riskiest move of my life. What attracted me to this business was not the actual auto body part, but rather the business opportunity. For me, business boils down to two success factors – common sense and selfdiscipline,” Pat said. Jumping into the challenge of taking a failing business and turning it into a successful business is only one of the challenges Pat met and conquered. He decided in his 30s he was going to push himself to learn new things.

“This year I’ll turn 67 and my on-going goal is to continue to find things in my life that stimulate and challenge me.”

This has become the mantra of this successful businessman’s life. The auto body shop was not Pat’s first venture of turning around a failing business. His first business was a pizza restaurant in Santa Barbara, California. This was no “pie in the sky” idea. In nine months, he turned it around and it is still a thriving business today. “I didn’t know anything about sling pies, but I applied myself to learning and made it a thriving pizzeria.” Born in England, but raised in South Africa, Pat started racing motorbikes and in 1979, he won the Honey Lube Oil 6-Hour Road Race. That stirred a passion that gained momentum. “Traveling in America, I went to a motor cross event where they were racing sidecars. I began motor cross and won #1 in nationals twice. I then progressed to vintage and post vintage motor cross where I won two more national titles. In 2003, I won the sidecar division in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, sponsored by Harley Davidson.

Not content just to ride a motorcycle, Pat discovered a love for restoring bikes. Since the 1990s, he has been restoring and collecting bikes, at one time he boasted an impressive collection of 27 bikes. In 2017, he was at an auction for a client and came across a Nimbus, a Danish motorcycle produced from 1919-1926. “They are not well known in this country, and I knew it was one of great value but it needed restoring,” he reflects. “I bought and restored this classic old bike. This was the first restoration I had done in ten years, after losing a best friend which lead to a disinterest in restoration for a period.”

The most challenging thing during the restoration was the motor and verifying the authenticity of the bike parts, sometimes as specific as the gas cap, in order to be sure the bike was 100 percent correct. I had to have it manufactured in Denmark. 1926 was the last year of production, but they were produced until 1928 with leftover parts. In April, a Nimbus sold at Bonhams for $85,000. Unlike Pat’s restored bike, this unrestored bike had a motor that didn’t run, no papers, and parts missing. Pat’s personal largest sale over the years was a 1926 Brough Superior SS 100 Alpine Grand Sports bike that he restored. This bike fetched a hefty $350,000. “This year I’ll turn 67 and my on-going goal is to continue to find things in my life that stimulate and challenge me. This goal-setter has accomplished an impressive bucket list. “I have professionally raced, traveled to milestone world locations, and restored bikes. For me, these are true measures of success and happiness.” We can all learn lessons from this inspirational baby boomer – At Living Well, we hope this article has rejuvenated you to think big, pursue your dreams, and purpose to be challenged. The Preventive Cardiology Program is a multidisciplinary approach to identifying potential cardiovascular disease risks factors in patients, educating them in ways to prevent heart disease.

Preventive Cardiology is more than early bird specials at Penrose-St. Francis Health Services By Andrea Sinclair

C

ardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, with approximately 2,200 Americans dying every 40 seconds from cardiovascular-related causes, according to the American Heart Association. Prevention has become central in the reduction of cardiovascular-related disease and mortality, with cardiologists and primary care providers playing an instrumental part in the delivery of preventive care. As part of our mission to build flourishing communities and whole person care, the physicians at PenroseSt. Francis Health Services and Colorado Springs Cardiology, a Centura Health Clinic, know it’s far better to prevent a disease than to treat it. The Preventive Cardiology Program at Penrose-St. Francis has helped about 150 cardiovascular patients since its inception in the fall of 2016. The program, whose leaders and co-directors are Dr. David Albrecht, specialist in general cardiology and nuclear cardiology, and Dr. Paul Sherry, who specializes in 14

cardiovascular disease, is designed to increase understanding and education about ways to prevent heart disease and to encourage preventive cardiovascular care. Both doctors have accomplished additional certifications in nuclear cardiology and cardiac ultrasound. The Preventive Cardiology Program is a multidisciplinary approach to identifying potential cardiovascular disease risks factors in patients, educating them in ways to prevent heart disease. This program helps people make lifestyle changes to prevent cardiovascular disease and the Preventive Cardiology Program team provides a multidisciplinary approach to teach participants how to reduce the factors that are putting them at risk for heart attack and stroke. The program includes community-wide prevention seminars held in Colorado Springs and Canon City with presentations by both doctors Albrecht and Sherry, as well as registered dietitians, exercise physiologists, cardiac rehabilitation specialists and cardiovascular nursing experts. The prevention seminars also offer on-site free health and biometric screenings and nutrition consultations.

“This program is about keeping people away from cardiologists and heart surgeons, while at the same time improving their quality of life,” said Sherry. The former military physician attended the U.S. Air Force Academy and then Texas A&M University Medical School. Sherry served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years and has spent another two decades in private practice cardiology in Colorado Springs. At Penrose-St. Francis, the Preventive Cardiology Program offers resources to patients with an elevated risk of developing cardiovascular disease; individualized programs designed to reduce risk factors and prevent disease from getting worse. The Preventive Cardiology Program team includes specialists to direct patients to nutritional services, prescriptive exercise programs, stress testing, cardiovascular riskreduction programs and a vascular rehabilitation program. Doctors Albrecht and Sherry have treated all types of cardiovascular disease for decades and recognize the value of prevention. Both physicians believe it is especially important to reach people in their


middle years of life, but will never turn away participants of advanced ages as everyone can benefit from preventive strategies. “In their 30s and 40s, people still feel healthy and great, they’re not thinking about heart problems and their risk factors,” Albrecht said. His retirement in early 2016 was short-lived, as he joined forces with

Sherry to create and co-direct the Preventive Cardiology Program at Penrose-St. Francis. Albrecht is a University of Illinois graduate and attended medical school at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. “Identifying and mitigating risks such as hypertension, sedentary lifestyle, diabetes, high cholesterol

and smoking is critical to preventing cardiovascular disease later in life. We want to connect with men and women who are in their early 40s, working long hours, not exercising very much, not eating very healthy, and help educate them and offer them the services that are going to help them improve their lifestyles for the long-term,” both doctors said.

“We have seen lots of heart disease in our careers and we are relentless advocates of the importance of preventive care and medicine,” Albrecht said.

This year the Southern Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce (SCWCC) celebrates its 25th anniversary. While this is an impressive milestone, it’s the changes in last three years that have our community buzzing about SCWCC and its current President and CEO, Lola Woloch. Since taking on the role in January of 2015, here are just a few stats for you to think about. 68% increase in membership revenue, 131% increase in programs revenue, 92% increase in gross profit, 281% increase in net income, and 56% increase in attendance, just in this past year. In addition, their annual Accolades Awards Luncheon, honoring the Business Leader of the Year, has seen a 262% increase in sponsorships over the past three years.

Lola, please tell me what led you to your current role at the SCWCC Our home and life were directly impacted by the Waldo Canyon fire. Although we didn’t lose our home, we had significant damage which we had to repair.

Community Leader Spotlight My current career had me traveling most of the time. Realizing I’d need to act as the general contractor on our repairs, I knew I wanted to make a life shift and work from home and stay local. I was so impressed by the quick rebuild of our community and the people who jumped in to help. I knew it was now my time to pay it forward and find an organization that was in true need of help. I made Colorado Springs my home over 20 years ago and directly sought out a position that would enable me to use my talents and give back to Colorado Springs.

Tell me about the recent awards SCWCC received Our 2018 is off to a quick start and I’m honored that the SCWCC received three awards at this year’s Colorado Chamber of Commerce Executive Conference (CCCE) from the Colorado Association of Commerce & Industry (CACI). The Spinal Disc The term “a slipped disc” is not correct, these structures cannot slip. Mother Nature has the ability to heal most disc injuries.

ur spine is a series of bones stacked on top of each other. In between these bones is a structure called a disc. A disc is built similar to a jelly doughnut. There is tough outer wall called the annulus, and a watery jelly inside the disc called the nucleus. A normal disc acts as a shock absorber pad, and also allows movement in the spinal column.

Spinal Discs and Aging As we age, the water inside the disc will dry. Over time, the discs will lose height and bulge. This is the typical cause of loss of height as we age and can cause significant problems. These changes will be seen on an MRI in everyone by the age of 40. A study of 10-year-old children also demonstrated that these changes were present in 10% of the children 20

at age ten, this is likely genetic. Sadly there is not a way to prevent disc degeneration. These changes are sometimes called degenerative disc disease, however, these are actually degenerative changes that are normal for age, rather than a specific disease.

Disc Rupture/Herniation A disc rupture and a disc herniation is the same thing. This is when the outer wall of the disc tears and the jelly inside the disc is extruded. The term “a slipped disc” is not correct, these structures cannot slip. This injury is seen on an MRI scan. A disc herniation can narrow the nerve canal and pinch a nerve, causing radiating pain into an extremity. This can be a serious injury that can lead to permanent weakness. Please seek immediate medical care if you develop weakness in a limb. Mother Nature has the ability to heal most disc injuries. The jelly inside the disc is 80% water, and


over time our bodies can absorb this water which will make a large disc rupture look smaller over time. You will often see photos of this used to claim that spinal decompression traction treatment has healed the disc injury. This is not accurate, the disc rupture becoming smaller over time is the process of natural healing. Once a disc is ruptured, the disc cannot maintain the water inside of the disc, and it will become a degenerative disc earlier than the other discs.

disc rupture to become smaller in size. Spinal traction can be effective in the neck to alleviate pressure on a pinched nerve. Future developments include stem cell injections, whether or not this will turn out to be an effective treatment is unknown at this time.

Treatment options for disc rupture/herniation fall into several categories: Do nothing. The passage of time and the body reabsorbing the water in the disc jelly can heal the majority of disc injuries. Steroid epidural injections. This is a cortisone injection at the site of the ruptured disc. Cortisone is our strongest anti-inflammatory, this can reduce inflammation and pain, and for some can speed up natural healing. Surgical Intervention. There are a number of surgical options that are beyond the scope of this article. Spinal decompression surgery, where the ruptured part of the disc is surgically removed, is done for disc injuries that compromise the nerves in the spinal canal. Discs can be surgically fused, and disc replacement surgery is available as well. Physical therapy. PT can help muscle spasm, tightness, weakness, and pain. Spinal traction or decompression is not effective for low back or lumbar disc injuries. It will not cause a dehydrated disc to reabsorb water. It will not cause a

Bending your knees when you lift maintains the curve in the low back. Twisting can also stress a disc. Making certain not to twist when you are carrying a heavy weight is important. Remember, “If you move your nose, move your toes,� when carrying a heavy weight. Our spine is a wonderful structure. The spine provides a protective case for the nerves housed inside it, yet allows movement. The spinal discs are a critical part of this amazing design. Once alignment is confirmed, your prescription determination is critical; taking extra time during this process will ensure that seeing with your new eyewear or contact lenses helps you see to your full potential. More importantly, make sure your eye doctor evaluates your external eye health. An external eye exam checks for dry eye, eyelid and corneal conditions, as well cataracts which can all affect vision. Prevent Colon Cancer By: Prashant Krishnan, M.D.

C

olon cancer is the third most common type of cancer that affects both men and women. Risk factors that can contribute to colon cancer include being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, diets high in red meat, smoking, heavy alcohol use, older age, personal history of precancerous polyps, personal history of inflammatory bowel disease, family history of colon cancer or colon polyps, diabetes, and genetic syndromes. Some things you can do to minimize your risk include staying fit, healthy dietary habits, curtail smoking and only drink in moderation, control your glucose levels, and have regular discussions with your physician.

more likely that polyps will be seen and removed. In fact, studies have shown that endoscopists who use FUSE scopes detect and remove more precancerous polyps than with traditional scopes.

Fortunately, colon cancer is one of the few cancers that is preventable; more importantly, YOU have the power to prevent it. A simple 15-20 minute colonoscopy can help prevent this cancer from ever developing. The hardest part of the procedure is the preparation, which involves inducing diarrhea. Once you arrive for the procedure, you enter a restful sleep with no memory of the procedure and no discomfort. A good colonoscopy can save your life by preventing colon cancer; but not all colonoscopies are the same. Assuming the preparation of the colon is adequate, two factors determine how good an exam you receive: 1) how good is the technology used by the endoscopist and 2) how good is the endoscopist at finding and removing precancerous growths, known as polyps. These two are actually related to each other. The colon is a tube which twists and turns and has many walls. To see the entire colon and look for polyps, it is extremely important to have maximum visualization. Traditional scopes use 20 year old technology with one camera to see 170 degrees inside the colon. FUSE scopes use modern innovation with three cameras to see 330 degrees inside the colon. FUSE scopes can see almost twice as much as the older technology, making it

CONCLUSION: A colonoscopy can save your life by preventing colon cancer. Talk to a gastroenterologist to see if you need a colonoscopy. If you do, find out what the precancerous polyp detection rate of your endoscopist is. Also, insist on modern technology FUSE scopes for your procedure. YOU deserve nothing less.

Sitting Down with This Iconic Actor at Garden of the Gods

Living Well caught up with actor Lou Diamond Phillips at an exclusive photo shoot for the magazine at the Garden of the Gods Collective in Colorado Springs. The day was beautiful and Phillips was relaxing in the make-up chair, sipping Colorado made bourbon.


A

success on the big and small screen for almost thirty years, the diverse performer is perhaps best known for his starring role as the Latino rocker Richie Valens in the iconic film La Bamba; and more recently on the six-season run of the beloved Netflix series Longmire, playing Lakota Native Henry Standing Bear. A ‘melting-pot’ of races and cultures including Filipino, Native American, Chinese, Hawaiian and Spanish, this versatile actor has successfully stepped into many diverse roles. Phillips was in town as the guest of the annual Colorado Springs ComicCon, where well-known actors and comedians get a chance to meet their fans on a one-to-one basis. He has nothing but great things to say about the city. “I give a thumbs up to Colorado Springs; such a beautiful place to live,” he says with enthusiasm. “ComicCon was really wonderful as I got to meet many of the people who have followed me for many years. The weekend gave me an opportunity to give back to my fans, by shaking hands, signing autographs, and taking pictures with them. Also, the view from the Garden of the Gods Collective was amazing, such a beautiful place for a photo shoot. The landscape is amazing and the view of the mountains from the patio was incredible.” Born at the Subic Bay Naval Station in the Philippines, Phillips was raised in Flour Bluff, a small town near Corpus Christi, Texas. Passing up the opportunity to attend Yale University, he opted to enroll at the University of Texas at Arlington, earning a 38

Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre with a minor in Honors English. He wrote three plays in college while performing in comedy shows at night with the Zero Hour. After graduating, Phillips spent the next four years performing with the Front Room Troupe at the Stage West in Fort Worth, tackling such classics as Hamlet and Faust while appearing in several made-in-Texas independent films including Trespass, about a brutal rape on a Texas ranch; where he also wrote the script. So, when the fairy tale happened in 1987 and he was “discovered in Texas,” earning the lead in La Bamba. Phillips was well prepared. This was the role that made him a star and the young actor worked nonstop for the next five years. In perhaps his most beloved performance, Phillips played the ill-fated rocker in the biopic turned cult classic. The film is the true story of Ritchie Valens, a young Mexican American teen and his meteoric rise to rock ‘n’ roll stardom before perishing in a plane at the age of seventeen, along with Buddy Holly and J. P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson Jr. The plane went down in a blinding snowstorm on February 3, 1959, near Clear Lakes, Iowa and this horrible night was named “the day the music died.” “That was a very exciting and interesting time for me,” explains Phillips. “This was my Cinderella story and the success that was happening to Ritchie was happening to me in real life, so I just opened up my heart to what he must have been going through and played it on the screen. But I did my research, reading the stack of newspapers stories from the 1950s about his career and the plane crash. I also had fifteen songs to learn, even though they were performed by Los Lobos, as well as playing the guitar.” The one downside was that Phillips was paid scale for La Bamba, which back then was a thousand dollars a week and within six months he was out of money and entertained the thought of moving back to Texas. “The film was in the can, but I was an unknown in the lead and the story centered around a then, relatively obscure MexicanAmerican rock star,” he says. “Nobody was beating down my door.”

However, as luck would have it, he immediately landed a guest-starring role on Miami Vice, “appearing with both Viggo Mortensen and Annette Bening, “which basically paid me as much as I made on the six-week shoot of La Bamba,” he remembers. Next came Stand and Deliver where he gave a remarkable performance as a gang member whose life is changed by a tenacious and caring math teacher, played by Edward James Olmos. His intense performance would go on to garner him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The next year he played another type of outlaw in Young Guns. Co-starring with the young acting posse that included Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, and Kiefer Sutherland, Phillips played Jose Chavez y Chavez, a Navajo-Mexican, in the retelling of the adventures of Billy the Kid (Estevez) during the 1877-81 Lincoln County War, which took place in New Mexico Territory. Written by John Fusco, who went on to pen Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Young Guns is thought to be the most accurate portrayal of the Lincoln Country War ever brought to the screen. Switching gears, Phillips went on to star opposite Meg Ryan and Denzel Washington in Courage Under Fire, playing helicopter gunner Monfriez during the Gulf War. “My father did two tours in Vietnam, and would tell me the stories of serving in combat,” he remembers, “and I try to support the USO whenever possible.” For the last six years, Phillips has been ensconced in the beautiful city of Santa Fe, NM, filming the

contemporary Western series Longmire, based on the best-selling Craig Johnson series of novels. While filmed in Santa Fe, Longmire takes place in the mountains of the fictional Absaroka County, Wyoming. The series also stars Australian actor Robert Taylor as Sheriff Walt Longmire, a widower battling personal demons, and Katee Sackhoff, best known for Battlestar Galactica, as deputy Victoria Moretti, who has more than a professional interest in the handsome, yet troubled sheriff. Phillips plays the sheriff ’s oldest and closest friend and confidant, Henry Standing Bear. The two go back decades: Henry and Walt served in Vietnam together and Henry is the godfather to Walt’s daughter, Katie. The owner of the Red Pony Saloon, Standing Bear has his own scores to settle and relies on his local pipeline at the bar and on the reservation — bringing a keen sense of intuition to Longmire’s dutiful police procedure. When Phillips was sent the Longmire pilot script more than six years ago, he strongly felt that the project was “very right” for him and immediately knew he wanted to play the role of Henry Standing Bear. “I fell in love with the script as the story had an amazing amount of depth,” says Phillips, “As a contemporary Western, there’s nothing like it on television today. “The experience truly opened up my eyes. to South Dakota and saw the conditions in Rose Bud at Pine Ridge; so I was familiar with these worlds and it was interesting to find the differences between the Cheyenne, Lakota, and Navajo.” Transitioning to the small screen twelve years ago, Phillips has had a busy decade in TV with some compelling story arcs on popular series, including 24 (he remains good friends with Sutherland from Young Guns days), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, SGU Stargate Universe, and most recently Blindspot and Hawaii Five-0. Constantly working, in 2015 he starred with Antonio Banderas in The 33 about the Chilean mine disaster, and as the despicable mass-murderer Richard Ramirez in the true story of The Night Stalker. Both of these true-story dramatizations were directed by women, “who were always looking for a different approach to these characters – two men with almost debilitating baggage,” Phillips explains. Recent projects include co-starring in Filly Brown with Edward James Olmos, a starring role in the independent film Created Equal directed by Bill Duke and the contemporary Western Urban Country. “The character of Don Lucho in The 33 was the foreman who took the miners into the mine on that day. Initially thought of as a villain, director Patricia Riggen had me bring in a sense of real guilt to Lucho as he had reported safety concerns to the mining company that were not heeded by the supervisors. Richard Ramirez, portrayed in The Night Stalker, was almost destined to be a mass murderer as he was exposed to violence, perversion, and neglect most of his young life and so desperately wanted to be ‘someone.’” The experience truly opened up my eyes. In addition to an ongoing and well-respected film and television career, Phillips is starting to brand himself as a celebrity chef who has created a solid foundation in the food world and has the chops to move forward to create his own brand. In 2012 and 2013 he was a celebrity judge on Iron Chef America and the next year he competed on the Food Network series Rachel vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off and Sauce Boss, emerging as the winner on both series. Reflecting upon the many “blessings” that Longmire has created for him, Phillips decided to host ‘Thanksgiving in July,’ at the end of the second season of filming, a tradition that continued until the end of production. “I tend to bring together near strangers into the warmest, most welcoming place I can think of - the kitchen,” Phillips says with pride.

When Do Grandparents Obtain Parenting Rights to Form a ‘Grand Family’? In the last 20 to 30 years, the rise in grandparents who take on the responsibility and cost of raising their grandchildren has risen dramatically. Federal law requires that states consider placing children with relatives in order to receive foster care and adoption assistance. By: Gordon N. Shayne

ccording to a recent story on 60 Minutes, more and more grandparents across the United States are now raising their grandchildren. These are heartbreaking stories of grandparents who have rescued their grandchildren from extremely difficult and urgent situations. Very often, the grandparents are exhausting their retirement savings and then struggle to provide for their grandchildren with little or no help from the state.

In many of these cases, grandparents have stepped in to take custody of these children because one or both parents have serious drug and/or alcohol addictions or unresolved mental health issues. Many substance abuse problems seen today are the result of the recent escalation of a nation-wide opioid/painkiller epidemic.

Nationally, a growing number of grandparents are raising their grandchildren, with the number of kids who have a grandparent as their primary caregiver reaching 2.9 million in 2015. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Population Division for 2016, three percent of Colorado kids (38,000 children) lived in households where a grandparent served as their primary caregiver. Some experts point to drug addiction, particularly the growing problem of opioid abuse, as the primary driver of this trend. Many of these children have been living without love and affection, some are homeless, left to fend for themselves, and others are exposed to the dangers of not being properly supervised and fall prey to unsavory predators.

Grandmothers and grandfathers often are the first — and best — choice when state and local caseworkers have to take a child out of a home and find someone else to take custody,” said Angela Sausser, Executive Director of the Public Children Services Association of Ohio, a coalition of public child safety agencies in the state. On February 9th, 2018, the Family First Prevention Services Act was passed and signed into law (FFSPA) (P.L. 115-123.) This is a landmark bill that focuses on the importance of children growing up in families. The legislation introduces historic reforms to help keep children safely with their families and avoid the traumatic experience of entering foster care. It also includes provisions to help ensure children are placed in the least restrictive, most family-like setting appropriate to their special needs when foster care is needed. “For every child in foster care who has been placed with a relative, another 20 children are being raised by relatives outside the system,” said Jaia Lent, Deputy Executive Director of Generations United, a Washington, D.C.-based family research and advocacy group. A case decided by the U.S. Supreme Court, Troxel vs Granville, said that parents have a fundamental liberty interest in the care and custody of their children, but there are exceptions. When children are not being properly supervised or cared for by parents, or a parent is incapacitated due to a substance abuse addiction, grandparents may be entitled to file a petition in the District Court and obtain full parental rights. In these kinds of cases, it is vital that grandparents obtain adequate legal representation to assist them with proving all of the facts that would lead to obtaining a court order. This will give grandparents custody rights. Oftentimes in these cases, parents do not agree that the grandparents should have custody rights and that sets up a disputed legal case between grandparents and natural parents over the best interest of the children. A Word on Advances in Cataract Surgery

A

s we go through life, signs of aging are inevitable. One of those signs is a decrease in vision. A common reason for decreased vision is a cataract. A cataract is the “clouding” of the natural lens in the eye. While a cataract is considered a normal part of aging, the decrease in vision that often occurs a cataract can be improved with advances in medicine.. Early symptoms of a cataract can often be remedied with a change of eyeglasses or with better lighting. As the cataract progresses these options become unsatisfactory andundergoing cataract surgery can restore vision.

Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens from the eye and replacing it with an artificial lens implant which then does the focusing. Prior to recent advances, individuals who had astigmatism would generally need glasses to see clearly after cataract surgery. Astigmatism is a condition where the corneal surface of the eye is shaped like the

Today, with the availability of astigmatism correcting intraocular lens implants, patients with astigmatism may be able to see clearly in the distance without the assistance of glasses. Likewise, there are “multifocal” intraocular lens implants. These can provide patients with reasonable vision for both reading and driving distances without so much dependence on glasses at either distance. For patients who have both cataract and glaucoma, it is possible to implant a device at the time of cataract surgery to help control eye pressure. The iStent® is a small implantable device that is inserted at the time of cataract surgery and can reduce the need for glaucoma drops. I’m an outdoor enthusiast and an outgoing person, but I felt ten years older than I was and had lost most of my confidence. As an entrepreneur, working to start a new business it was important for me to feel good about myself; however due to my worn-down teeth, my selfesteem was low. ’m 57, and over the years, like many people, I’ve had your standard run of dental work, cleanings, fillings, and crowns. At first, I thought I couldn’t afford the cost, but when it comes to your health and confidence, there is truly no price you can put on quality of life. Today I’m pleased to say that I not only found a wonderful doctor, I found a family and a home in his office. They made me feel so comfortable from start to finish, that I now look forward to my routine care visits. Last November my finals were put in and I’m still getting used to people’s compliments Friends ask what is different about me, did I lose weight, did I have a facelift? Continuing to Grow The Colorado Springs Airport continues to see large increases in passenger traffic with a 17% growth over last year and the trend is likely to continue with the recent addition of four new routes.

hat’s great news for local residents looking for a hasslefree summer vacation. “We now have 15 non-stop destinations,” said Greg Phillips, Director of Aviation for the Airport. “We just added three new markets — Minneapolis, San Antonio and Seattle —plus we added additional service to Atlanta. ummer is here, exciting plans are being made for a long-awaited trip; but for pet owners, one huge consideration in planning for a vacation is, “Where can I safety board my pet while I am away?” If you are unable to take your pet with you, you want peace of mind, knowing your beloved pet is being taken care of in an environment as much like home as possible. Your desire for this four-legged family member is to experience as little adjustment as possible while you are away.

Before choosing a pet boarding facility, there are questions you need to ask to ensure your pet is receiving the best possible care. Here are some we recommend:

1. Is there separation of small dogs from large

dogs? Small dogs can be frightened when being boarded with larger dogs.

Is the facility clean and the staff professional? We encourage you to check out the facility ahead of time. Sometimes, if possible, it is prudent to “drop in” on the facility during business hours to see the kind of care being given.

Does the staff respond to you in a manner that gives you a secure feeling that your pet will be well taken care of while you are away? Make sure you communicate your desires. 62

Does the facility offer play time and personal time? If so, what are the additional charges for these services?

Is the facility willing to work with you on feed times and amount of food that your pet is accustomed to receiving at home?

Is there proper supervision of the facility from trained personnel? Some owners want a vet on the grounds 24/7. YOUR responsibility as a pet owner is to give clear instructions to the facility’s staff. If you choose a quality care facility, generally, they are pet owners themselves, and their desire is to provide the best care they can. You need to bring them a record of your pet’s shots and the name and number of your veterinarian.


If you are coming into Colorado Springs for vacation and need your pet taken care of for only a few hours, daycare can be a great option. This frees you to do some of those things you love to do that might not be a great fit for your pet. If you are an adrenaline junky, you might choose to leave your pet in good hands while you rappel one of the natural rock formations in the area, or raft extreme whitewater in the Royal Gorge. If you prefer a calmer adventure, a float down the Arkansas River might be more to your liking. Most rafting companies do not allow pets or have a place you can leave your pet unattended while you are on the water.
