Holiday Memories

O

ur family first visited The Broadmoor in December of 2006. Kaitlyn, our oldest, was 3 at the time and I’ll never forget the look on her face when we topped the golden escalator and her eyes caught first sight of the gingerbread houses. She squealed and displayed her infectious joy, her eyes as big as saucers - a reminder of how special the holidays are through the eyes of a child. This past summer, our dear friend and local photographer, Wendy Pearce Nelson, offered to shoot our family Christmas card at The Broadmoor. She captured this great photo above, just off the main room where the chefs display their gingerbread masterpieces each holiday season. I love this photo and how it reminds me of all the great Colorado holiday memories over the years with my girls. Documenting another holiday memory with photography, this past July I had the honor of meeting and interviewing Governor Hickenlooper at The Governor’s Mansion. Long-time COS photographer Don Jones joined me, as we set the stage and captured a stunning black-tie photo of the Governor and his wife. It was an honor visiting with our Governor and hearing him share intimate details about his childhood and favorite holiday memories. For our cover feature, we are excited to bring you an interview with Vince Gill and Amy Grant. Little did I know when we decided to profile them, that both are Co-Founders of Challenge America, a Colorado based non-profit dedicated to helping military service members. In addition, Vince and Amy will be performing at the 2018 U.S. Senior Open next summer. Follow us @coloradolivingwell for more details on this event. As you can see above, our girls are young women now. As we teach them to pause and reflect on the blessings and accomplishments of another year, they know one of my real joys during the holiday season is the opportunity to wish each of you, our readers, the very best for the new year. For 12 years I’ve been honored to bring you and our city this publication. Wishing you peace, joy and hope as you spend time with family and friends this season. Joshua D. riving past Motor City, you can’t miss the Bob Penkhus sign proudly displaying their longtime slogan “Where Nobody Buys Just One.” Within the first five minutes of meeting Bob Penkhus, it’s obvious he has a love for his customers and employees. Couple that with his enthusiasm for their products and the result is continued success and growth that has them celebrating 60 years of service in the Pikes Peak region. “It’s fun to be recognized as the ‘nobody buys just one’ guy when I’m out in the community. It gives me real world opportunities to meet customers and hear what they like and don’t like, enabling us to keep improving,” says Bob. 10

The Penkhus Motor Company that you see today had its humble beginning back in 1951 when Robert N. Penkhus moved his young family from Ames, Iowa, and opened a small used car operation in Colorado Springs, Colorado. New cars were added to the operation on Pikes Peak Avenue in 1957 when the Company became one of the ten dealers in the United States to obtain a Volvo Franchise. Quality products and a commitment to customer service assured their growth. What started as a small car dealership has now exploded into a 3-location business that offers customers Volvo, Mazda, Volkswagen and Mitsubishi sales and service.

Bob Penkhus, Robert’s son and current President / Owner of the dealership was a permanent fixture around his father’s dealership. After graduating with a business degree in marketing from Denver University, Bob joined the family business and in 1973 began running his own Mazda Store. In 1977 Bob became President of Penkhus Motor Company and has successfully expanded its operations to a total of 3 stores. Today, he remains actively involved and now proudly works alongside his son Rob Penkhus, General Manager. When Living Well Magazine asked Bob about this milestone in business he says, “As I’m speaking with you today, my lovely wife and I are celebrating our 42nd wedding anniversary. When I think about what Dad started back in 1951 and the dealership celebrating 60 years, I’m reminded that when you’re doing what you love, time evaporates.” Over the years Bob has certainly has earned his chops in the auto industry. In 2016, he was nominated for The TIME Dealer of the Year Award, one of the industry’s most prestigious and highly coveted honors. Out of over 16,000 dealers nationwide, Bob was only one of

for greatness has resulted in success and growth for the family business. During the holiday season, two personal passions of the Penkhus’ family include their annual Toys for Tots holiday drive and supporting the Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado. This year, for every new car sold, their dealership donates 200 pounds of food with an end goal of 100,000 pounds. Bob and his wife Leslie have three children and nine grandchildren. One of their sons, Rob tells us “after high school I left Colorado to attend Arizona State in Phoenix, Arizona. I applied for a sales position at the local Toyota dealership – not letting on that my family was in the car business. I set a personal goal to secret shop over fifty dealerships as a potential customer. My desire was to learn every facet of my craft and be the absolute best at it. This research gave me valuable insight into the customer’s expectations when shopping for a new car. I take great pride in customer service and this time in Arizona provided a valuable foundation that guides me today as I work with our customers and continue the family legacy.”

Bob Penkhus, a certified transport pilot, flew several sorties of doctors, nurses, supplies, civilians and media into and out of Portau-Prince, Haiti, flying more than 30 hours, amassing 7,139 nautical miles. Using his own King Air, Bob shuttled 44 people and hauled more than 2,000 pounds of medical supplies.

50 auto dealers selected to attend the national competition. In addition, Bob was awarded the Pikes Peak Chapter of the American Red Cross “2011 Humanitarian of the Year” for his role supporting the earthquake victims in Haiti. “I’m a certified airline transport pilot and one of my passions is flying my King Air,” says Bob. “I flew eight local doctors from Colorado Springs to Miami to stage for relief efforts. From Miami we flew into Haiti and provided critical first response support. Commercial flights were not able to land right after the earthquake, so I made multiple trips flying between Haiti and Miami to deliver medical staff and supplies. It was one of the most amazing events I’ve ever had the privilege to serve and be a part of.” This is just one example of the character Bob displays, making it no surprise that his enthusiasm

Spend just a few minutes with Rob and you’ll see, like his Dad and Grandfather, he loves people. Rob tells us one of his favorite aspects of auto sales is making new friends. “I always love meeting new customers and understanding their lifestyle goals and desires.” Rob is passionate about staying up with current trends, safety features, and choices. “I feel I’m always putting my customers into the right vehicle for their needs,” he says. Rob is known for giving out his cell phone and personal email address to customers. He loves hearing feedback and having his thumb on the heartbeat of the business. “My youngest daughter is just like me. She has so much salesmanship in her already. It wouldn’t surprise me is she joined the family business one day to carry on the family legacy.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF AN EYE EXAMINATION FOR ALL AGES Adult surveys reveal that one of the biggest fears Americans have, second to getting cancer, is the loss of their vision.

People that develop systemic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and thyroid disease need more frequent eye exams due to possible complications from those conditions.

Dr. Ted Archdale

A

dult surveys reveal that one of the biggest fears Americans have, second to getting cancer, is the loss of their vision. The usual comment, however, is: “I see fine, why do I need an eye exam?” Different stages of life and certain medical conditions, along with the aging eye, provide reasons for the need of an eye exam for early detection of issues to reduce the possibility of vision loss. During your eye exam, the doctor will inform you how often you should have an eye exam based on your individual needs. When is an eye exam recommended? An infant or toddler will not know what “normal” vision is. So when children have vision problems, they may go undetected which can delay development or manifest in behavior problems. Uncorrected, these vision issues could end up being permanent. Even if kids are unable to talk, eye exams can be performed. If you suspect an issue in your infant or toddler, schedule an eye exam as soon as possible.

Lastly, the aging eye has an increased possibility of different eye conditions, such as cataracts and macular degeneration, and in the early stages, patients may not have symptoms. So after 60, eye exams are highly recommended to detect and prevent vision loss on a yearly basis. Technological advances have improved accuracy and convenience during an eye exam and in most cases with the use of The Optomap, a digital retinal imaging technology, annoying dilation drops usually are not necessary. Living Well readers mention this ad when scheduling your eye exam and receive a free Optomap at either of our locations, a $38 value. Having an eye exam gives you the peace of mind that you are protecting your vision and are taking preventative measures to not lose your vision. Call us to make your appointment today or visit www.archdaleeyecare.com South office (719) 577-4400 - North office (719) 638-4010

Studies tell us that learning is 70% visual, so as children reach school age, if they have vision issues, they may do poorly in school. Schools do vision screenings, but many kids with vision issues are missed due to lack of training of the screeners. A professional eye exam should be done prior to children starting school and is usually recommended between the ages of three and four. To ensure a student’s success in school, an eye exam every one to two years is recommended. As we grow older, eye exams are needed more for specific reasons. People that develop systemic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and thyroid disease need more frequent eye exams due to possible complications from those conditions. But for healthy teens and adults, an eye exam is recommended every two years.

// In this edition: Tracy Miller Gallery

By: Joshua Cates, Publisher

MY FIRST EXPOSURE TO TRACY was at a dinner party this past September in Manitou, where our host said, “I must show you my collection of beautiful Tracy Miller originals.” Captivated by the bright colors and happy to learn Tracy was a local artist, I reached out to learn more for this edition of Shop Local. After college, Tracy cut her teeth working at a gallery in downtown Denver, learning valuable knowledge and insight into the business of the art world. Six years ago, after already establishing herself with a successful line of hand painted silks, Tracy married her art talents with her business acumen and opened her Manitou Springs gallery. “I’ve been an artist my entire life, originally painting on silk. This was a great avenue for many years and I loved that time of my life, but missed painting on canvas,” says Tracy. “In 2008, I changed mediums and started creating my own collection of very colorful animals after brushing up on my abstract skills. These paintings brought me immediate success, in large part due to the bright colors I was accustomed to using in my silk work.” Tracy’s Manitou Springs gallery is a whole new take on the western vernacular of art. Now showcasing 23 artists, you will find paintings that honor the west, but do it by using beautiful colors that are expressive and stylistic. This year Tracy’s brought back a popular tradition with her artists, called the “Holiday 100,” where her artists create works starting at $100. This is a first come, first serve event in December and pieces go quick due to the popularity.

CENTURA BONE HEALTH Our experts will address every aspect of a patients’ osteoporosis diagnosis, from specialized prevention to multidisciplinary treatment.

Patients who may benefit from an osteoporosis or bone health consult include: • Post-menopausal women. • Women over the age of 65. • Men over the age of 70. • Anyone with a history of fragility fractures. • Anyone with a family medical history of osteoporosis or fragile bones. • Anyone with low bone density (BMD).

t Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, elevating the quality of health care our patients receive at every phase of life is a full-time commitment. With that goal in mind, Centura Bone Health experts will address every aspect of our patients’ osteoporosis diagnosis, from specialized prevention to multi-disciplinary treatment. Our goal is to identify at-risk patients, support early diagnosis and provide appropriate medical treatment. Support from Centura Bone Health, along with a healthy lifestyle, will improve the quality of life of our patients. Osteoporosis is a mostly symptom-free disease that weakens bones, making them susceptible to sudden and unexpected fractures. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bones does not keep up with the deterioration of old bones. Most osteoporosis injuries are most common in the hips, wrists, or spine. 16

COLivingWell.com

Approximately 10 million people in the United States are estimated to have osteoporosis and about 34 million more are estimated to suffer low bone mass, increasing their risk for osteoporosis. Because the condition does not exhibit tell-tale signs until it is chronic, more than 80 percent of people with the disease do not receive osteoporosis care. At Centura Bone Health, our providers address bone health by providing comprehensive care, including risk assessments, counseling and personalized treatment options. “We have expert providers who are ready to embark on specialized, bone-centered care,” Dr. Steven Myers, orthopedic surgeon with Centura Orthopedics, explained. “Osteoporosis is a condition that is widespread but rarely treated until it is too advanced

and causing severe pain and problems. Centura Bone Health will offer preventive care and personalized, multi-disciplinary treatment options to meet every one of our patients’ health care needs.” Recent health initiatives have encouraged the promotion of wellness and preventive care to promote health aging and the Centura Bone Health is devoted exclusively to serving the needs of our patients. “We know that there is a need to provide better, comprehensive care for our region’s aging population and this is an efficient, intelligent approach to address a disease that the majority of those patients will likely have. Centura Bone Health will be a one-stop shop for the full evaluation and treatment of osteoporosis and other bone-related conditions,” Myers said.

The clinic has been in planning and development for the past year, with a projected opening date of early spring 2018 at the Audubon Medical Campus on Circle Drive. A Dual Beam X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) machine, which measures bone mineral density, will offer patients a superior care experience. These tests indicate a patient’s likelihood of suffering a fracture, assist in treatment recommendations and evaluate a patient’s response to that treatment. Imaging and radiology, physical therapy and orthopedic services will also be part of a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary treatment approach. Moreover, Centura Bone Health will be the first facility in the state of Colorado to be certified by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD). IS THE SKY THE LIMIT FOR OUR AIRPORT Greg Phillips, Director of Aviation for COS Airport talks about record breaking numbers, goals for 2018 and initial plans for an ambitious 900 acre development project

By: Joshua Cates, Publisher

F

rom January to September of this year, Colorado Springs Airport (COS) recorded a total of 1,215,539 passengers traveling through COS, a 30 percent increase from this time last year. Frontier Airlines largely contributed to the increase with a 383 percent gain in passenger traffic from one year ago. COS continues to grow and reach new heights. “We still have plenty of airfield and terminal capacity,” says Greg Phillips, Director of Aviation for COS. “The notion that our numbers are 18

COLivingWell.com

increasing is very positive. We are prepared and have the capacity to handle the continued growth,” he says. The airport fervently works hard to raise its awareness in the community as a real, viable option. “With support from existing airlines, plus new carriers like Frontier Airlines, who came into the market in 2016, we have expanded our route map, including 13 unique non-stop destinations on 5 airlines, for a total of up to 33 outbound flights scheduled through

February 2018. We have many conveniences like simple parking, easy check-in, short security lines and for the most part, hassle-free travel,” says Phillips. “Look before you book” is a motto and phrase you’ll hear frequently around COS. With the entrance of new airlines, like Frontier, they’ve pushed fares down and have made their rates more competitive. When you factor in driving, fuel, weather, value of time, and the inconvenience of traveling to DIA, in many cases,

COS makes more sense for those of us who live in this region. With new flights being added, like non-stop service to Ft. Myers, Tampa, San Jose and San Antonio to mention a few, COS continues to make travel attractive to El Paso County residents and surrounding areas. Possibly the biggest obstacle COS will always face is air service access and competition among carriers in Denver. One of the frequently asked questions the airport receives is, “When will Southwest serve Colorado Springs?” While the talks continue, the reality is that Southwest has a strong presence in Denver, so it just doesn’t make sense right now for them to dilute some of that traffic through Colorado Springs. Greg will tell you their focus is three-fold: Maintain the services they have, build upon proven successes, and finally, attract and retain new airline services. “With many of the airlines consolidating, we have most all of

them already at Colorado Springs. For a community of our size, this is really great air service. We like to remind our residents to use what we’ve put in place so we don’t lose it,” says Phillips.

With new flights being added, many by Frontier Airlines, COS Airport continues to make travel attractive to El Paso County residents.

COS currently sits on 7,200 acres. That is a massive amount of potential and COS realizes this. One of their focuses for the future is economic

development on the land they own. By increasing their financial growth through other ventures on the acreage, they would attract outside businesses, build jobs, and continue increasing air travel related services. Peak Innovation Park is one of these ideas. At an estimate of 900 acres dedicated to business, lifestyle and destination travel, this vision would have substantial economic development and impact for the residents of El Paso County. While the plans are in the first stages, you will hear more about this vision soon. For more information please visit www.flycos.com

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS Evaluating your loved ones’ well being Coming home to find loved ones in an emergent situation makes the holidays a stressful time for many families.

By: John McKinnon

T

here is no place like home for the holidays. It’s a familiar refrain that echoes the sentiments of many during the holiday season. Nothing is better than visiting loved ones, reminiscing about holidays past, and creating new memories together. Sometimes, though, coming home to aging loved ones feels more like a nightmare than a Hallmark card. In the senior care industry, it is not uncommon for holidays to be one of the busier times of the year. Coming home to find loved ones in an emergent situation makes the holidays a stressful time for many families. There are often signs that a person has had a decline, but these signs may go unnoticed over time and from a distance. Understanding specific indicators can help prevent panic and urgency during the holiday season. Falls are the most common concern related to age and decline, especially during the winter, but there are many other factors that can indicate a change to their safety. Things such as confusion related to time, day, or place while on the phone with you; mismanagement of medication while checking in on them; even calls from concerned neighbors and friends, point to an underlying decline in an aging family member. Deterioration in personal hygiene, a tendency toward dehydration, and the inability to prepare nutritious meals can also indicate the need for some additional support or services. The best first approach to addressing these issues is to go with your loved one to their primary care provider. Often seniors will not let their issues be known or think

they do not have an issue. If you go to these appointments, you are able to advocate and explain your safety concerns. At that point, the primary care provider can talk to you about options ranging from therapy services to 24-hour care. Take time to explore therapy/ home health, home care, retirement living options, and even hospice services. All of these options offer specific pros and cons, and depending on what is making it unsafe for your loved one at home, each may offer a solution. Remember that these services can be done in conjunction with one another and help promote overall health and wellness. Educate yourself and come up with a plan before these issues turn into emergencies. “Many people have had issues in the traditional medical system and, as a

result, are searching for alternatives to so-called standard care,” said Dr. Barber. According to the most recent available data from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans spent $30.2 billion for out-of-pocket complementary health approaches. This reflects a shift in the healthcare paradigm and individuals seeking multiple types of medical treatment that form a true integrative approach.

Access to seemingly unlimited opportunities that support a wellness lifestyle; collaboration with the Spa and fitness facilities, and the truly integrative nature of the clinical care team and their involvement with every client, make the IHWC unlike any other wellness center or retreat. Utilizing the best of traditional, complementary, precision and proactive medicine, the IHWC allows for the development of a truly

comprehensive approach to the care of its clients. “Our goal is to make the IHWC not only a local, but a national and even an international wellness destination,” said Dr. Barber. “We want to bring people to Colorado Springs to show them the beauty of our environment, introduce them to our new wellness paradigm and help them kick off the New Year on a better, healthier note.” For more information or to schedule a consultation please call 719.428.2202 or email us. services@ihwcwellness.com Winter 2017

ESCAPE to Telluride

IN 1889, BUTCH CASSIDY’S FIRST MAJOR RECORDED CRIME OCCURRED IN TELLURIDE, COLORADO.

By: Joshua Cates, Publisher

C

assidy made off with $24,580 or $665,943 in today’s dollars when he robbed the San Miguel Valley Bank. Currently, I have no plans to rob a bank, but I do wonder how Butch would have spent 48 hours in Telluride with all that dough at his disposal. In 30 years, I’d never ventured out to this region of Colorado, so when Gateway Canyons Resort - located in Gateway, Colorado and the town of Telluride called and invited Colorado Living Well out to write a story, I capitalized on the chance to showcase to our readers how to eat like royalty, play like a local and stay in style.

Inquiring more about the town’s history with my friend Bill Jensen, CEO of Telluride Ski Resort, he tells me “I’m actually preparing for a speaking engagement on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In my research on this robbery, Cassidy paid the Marshall $2,200 not to be in town the day of the robery. Most people agree that the Sundance Kid may have helped with a change of horses for Cassidy. This was the first time he and Butch Cassidy would have teamed up and the rest is history,” he continues. There’s certainly not a shortage of ways to pamper yourself and spend some cash in this part of Colorado.

TELLURIDE FESTIVAL OF CARS AND COLORS Ray Cody, Founder of the Telluride Festival of Cars and Colors (www.carsandcolors.com), is passionate about bringing awareness to the beautiful town of Telluride. He and his wife made Telluride their home in 2006 after visiting and being overcome by the beauty. Now with 3 years of Cars and Colors under his belt, Ray firmly believes that Telluride presents one of the best venues for fine automobiles, motorcycles and private jets. USA Today agrees with him - ranking Cars and Colors as one of the Top 10 Automotive Events in America. Ray, who is one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met, is quick to give credit to the wonderful partners who’ve made this event possible. “My passion is for Telluride and this community. Obviously, I love and collect cars myself. It’s the universal love of fine automobiles along with the memories and emotions they evoke that bring people from all walks of life to attend our event,” he says. 2018 EVENT DATE: SEPTEMBER 27th - 30th

LUNC H & DINNER THREE LOCAL SPOTS MADE OUR CUT FOR TOP UNFORGETTABLE MEALS IN TELLURIDE The space here certainly doesn’t justify how many wonderful things I’d like to say about my three favorite eateries. Deep down we all have a “foodie” in us just dying to try that next, delicious meal when on vacation. For a memorable breakfast or lunch that is priced just right and a local favorite, try out The Butcher & Baker Cafe (www.butcherandbakercafe.com). Operated by locals Megan and Cinda, they give you a pool ball for your order, which is rad - just like the food. Heading out for dinner - here are two restaurants that will make your mouth water and deliver award-winning feasts. Try the filet and lobster tail at the Cosmopolitan (www.cosmotelluride.com) and don’t be surprised when the host hands you an iPad to easily navigate their ever changing wine selection. It’s no surprise Wine Spectator has given them their Award of Excellence for nine consecutive years. Another favorite of ours is the New Sheridan Chop House (www.newsheridan.com). We recommend the Seared Hudson Foie Gras paired with the Kettmeir Moscato Rosa to start, then move onto the Frutti Di Mare featuring their unforgettable King Crag Legs. Welcome to the epicenter of Telluride’s amazing food scene. With a consistent Top 3 rating on TripAdvisor, this is your classic steak house stop.

MUSI C VEN UE SHERIDAN OPERA HOUSE AND MEETING THE GRAMMY-WINNING STEEP CANYON RANGERS Originally built in 1913, the Sheridan Opera House (www.sheridanoperahouse.com), was the genesis of Telluride’s theater and cultural center. At risk of losing this historic gem in the 1990’s, Sandra and Keith Carradine saved it from demolition and have since restored the property to its original glamour. Enjoying a performance in this historic, intimate venue was like nothing I’d experienced before. Standing just feet away from the Grammy Award Winning Steep Canyon Rangers, roughly 200 passionate music lovers and I stomped our feet on the old wood planks, bathed in the pink hue of the historically correct stage lighting. www.steepcanyon.com FUN FACT: They tell me the light bulbs are over $70 each and must be custom ordered. Stepping into this venue, you are instantly transported back in time. This is the way music was meant to be enjoyed. Catching a show here is a must when visiting Telluride.

FINANCIAL PLANNING Helping You See the Big Picture By: Randy Ward, CFP® and Colin Mossbrook

O

wning a new home, starting a business, or retiring comfortably - each of these financial goals come with a price tag, which is why it is integral to develop a plan for achieving them. Financial planning is a process that aids individuals in mapping out these goals by evaluating one’s entire financial picture, then outlining strategies that address individualized needs and available resources.

Why is financial planning important? A comprehensive financial plan serves as a framework for organizing the pieces of your financial picture. With a financial plan in place, you will be better able to focus on your goals and truly understand what it will take to reach them. One of the main benefits of having a financial plan is that it can help you balance competing financial priorities. A financial plan will clearly illustrate how your financial goals are related--for example, how saving for your children’s college education might impact your ability to save for retirement. Once a plan is in place, your financial advisor will assist you in prioritizing your objectives, implementing specific strategies, and choosing the appropriate tools for attaining your goals. Most importantly, a financial plan provides a sense of comfort as you now have

a clear path to reaching your financial security.

The financial planning process Creating and implementing a comprehensive financial plan generally involves working with financial professionals to: • Develop a clear picture of your current financial situation by reviewing your income, assets, and liabilities, as well as evaluating your insurance coverage, investment portfolio, tax exposure, and estate plan. • Establish and prioritize financial goals and time frames for achieving them. • Implement strategies that address your current financial weaknesses and build upon your financial strengths. • Choose specific products and services that are tailored to your financial objectives. • Monitor your plan, making adjustments as your goals, time frames, or circumstances change.

Let’s look at a hypothetical example of how one family utilized a financial plan Tom, an OBGYN, was reviewing his personal finances in an effort to determine a timeframe for his retirement. At 53, Tom has spent the

last 20 years working hard to save money and manage a budget on his own. Tom knew he needed to save if he ever wanted to retire, and he has done a good job maximizing his workplace retirement plan so far, but he wants to ensure that he is on track to support his family’s goals with the assets he has built. Recognizing the increased complexity of his finances, Tom decided to meet with a professional in an effort to become more confident in his current and future financial decisions. Tom and his wife, Jill, met with a financial advisor a few days later. After time spent discussing their family goals and the type of lifestyle they would like to maintain in retirement, the advisor recommended they work together to create a strategy that would include their personal values while reaching their lifestyle goals. This allowed them to peer into the future through cash flow projections that were inflated over time, taxation analysis running spending and income through Form 1040, and included baseline retirement expenses they had not even considered such as Medicare Supplements. Having this valuable information allows for a dynamic plan that helps them not only with current necessary changes, including how to fund college, appropriate 401(k) and taxable investment account allocations, and a well-designed estate plan, but it also helps to narrow in on possible dates of retirement, the ability to purchase a vacation home, and even design future gifts to their alma mater.

These product recommendations are not part of the financial plan and you are under no obligation to follow them. Financial Advisors do not provide specific tax/legal advice and this information should not be considered as such. You should always consult your tax/legal advisor regarding your own specific tax/legal situation. The hypothetical example used in this article is for illustrative purposes only. 1928795 DOFU 10202017

Some members of the team The financial planning process can involve various different professionals. Our role as a financial planner, along with other key members, is described below: Financial planners play a central role in the process, focusing on your overall financial plan while also coordinating the activities of other professionals who have expertise in specific areas. They typically provide advice about investment options and asset allocation and can help you plan a strategy to manage your investment portfolio.

Accountants or tax attorneys provide advice on federal and state tax issues Estate planning attorneys help you plan your estate and give advice on transferring and managing your assets before and after your death. The most important member of the team, however, is you. Your needs and objectives drive the team, and once you’ve carefully considered any recommendations, all final decisions rest in your hands.

Staying on track The financial planning process doesn’t end once your initial plan has been created. Your plan should generally be reviewed at least once a year to make sure that it’s up-to-date. It’s also possible that you’ll need to modify your plan due to changes in your personal circumstances or the economy. Here are some of the events that might trigger a review of your financial plan:

Common questions about financial planning

Why can’t I do it myself? You can, if you have enough time and knowledge, but developing a comprehensive financial plan may require expertise in several areas. A financial professional can give you objective information and help you weigh your alternatives, saving you time and ensuring that all angles of your financial picture are covered.

What if I’m too busy? Don’t wait until you’re in the midst of a financial crisis to begin the planning process. The sooner you start, the more options you may have.

Is the financial planning process complicated? Each financial plan is tailored to the needs of the individual, so how complicated the process will be depends entirely on your individual circumstances. No matter the type of assistance you require, a financial professional will work hard to make the process as easy as possible, gladly providing answers to any questions.

• Your goals or time horizons change. • You experience a life-changing event such as marriage, the birth of a child, health problems, or a job loss. • You have a specific or immediate financial planning need (e.g., drafting a will, managing a distribution from a retirement account, paying long-term care expenses). • Your income or expenses substantially increase or decrease.

What if my spouse and I disagree? A financial professional is trained to listen to your concerns, identify any underlying issues, and help you find common ground.

Can I still control my own finances?

• Your portfolio has performed significantly better or worse than expected. • You’re affected by changes to tax laws.

For more information on Randy Ward, CFP® and Colin Mossbrook see Advertisement Inside Front Cover

Financial planning professionals make recommendations, not decisions. You retain control over your finances. Recommendations will be based on your needs, values, goals, and time frames. You decide which recommendations to follow, then work with a financial professional to implement them.

ince Gill and Amy Grant have been a part of Nashville music royalty for more than three decades. Both with stellar solo careers, they come together for a month each year at Christmas time for a holiday residency, “Christmas at the Ryman,” bringing beautiful harmonies to the iconic and historic auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. Grant talks about this special holiday tradition, “Vince and I have such different personalities and musical tastes, that this is the one time of year when we create an open and ‘come as you are feeling for family and friends.’ We can sleep in our own beds every night and we have ‘repeat offenders’ who come to our concerts more than once for something meaningful during the holidays.” Gill adds that

he and Grant met at the Ryman twenty-four years ago when they were both performing at a benefit for the local Symphony. “The auditorium is known as the ‘mother church of country music.’ Amy really loves this time of year as Christmas music is what she loves to do,” he says with pride. Continuing to enrich and expand her love of holiday music, in late 2016, Grant released Tennessee Christmas, marking her first all new holiday album in nearly 20 years. The album beautifully captures the joy, laughter, anticipation, and even melancholy the season brings. Grant, and her long-time co-writer, Chris Eaton, wrote an uplifting original song called “To Be Together,” after her daughter Sarah and her boyfriend were in an awful automobile accident. “During those tough hours in the emergency room and the days that followed in the

Multi-Grammy Award-Winning couple at their home in Nashville, Tennessee.

hospital, that chorus cycled through my brain on repeat ‘coming home just the way you are, knowing this is all that really matters, to be together’.” Grant continues to say that she loves everything about the Holidays, from hosting traditional Christmas Eve gatherings with the family, to a big Christmas morning breakfast where “Vince is at the helm manning the stove.” One of her cherished memories took place soon after her mother passed away, on the day before Christmas when she asked her youngest daughter to take a ride to pick up Amy’s father who was suffering from Dementia and living in an assisted living facility.

“We picked him up on Christmas Eve afternoon,” says Amy emotionally, “and drove to the home of one of my three sisters for a door bell ring and holiday song. She wanted to join us in the car, so we then went to visit our other two sisters, who also got into the car. All six of us drove around Nashville, with dad, reminiscing and enjoying the lights. It was magic!” The multi-award-winning performer, whose career includes six Grammy Awards, spans more than thirty years and stretches from her roots in gospel to becoming an iconic pop star, songwriter, television personality, and philanthropist. Amy and Vince performing at their annual “Christmas at the Ryman” in Nashville, Tennessee.

Born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, her first album was released in 1977 on the Christian label Word Music; soon after Grant left college to pursue a full time career in music. Her second album won a Grammy for its blend of gospel and pop and her crossover was completed with the 1991 album Heart in Motion, that reached number one on the Billboard Pop Chart.

“‘I Can’t Do This’” is the favorite vocal I’ve ever done,” he says with pride. “I’ve been making records for forty years and I’ve finally figured out how to sing. I enjoy not being rushed and finally trust my ears. Time is a beautiful thing and it took me two years to finish this album. Technology has kind of passed me by as I’ve always wanted to be a song writer and not a song interpreter.”

Not one to count his successes, Gill has been awarded twenty Grammy Awards, more than any other country artist. Born in Norman, Oklahoma, his father, an appellate judge, taught him how to play the guitar as a young boy and he was soon playing with local bluegrass groups, including Ricky Skaggs. In 1976, Gill joined the California based Pure Prairie League. The group’s 1980 release, Firin’ Up featured six songs by Gill, including the No. 1 country hit “Let Me Love You Tonight.”

As a producer, Gill wanted every note to matter, and to feel equal to the others. He picks his musicians and guest vocalists much the way a film director makes a movie. “I’m always casting,” he explains. “I ask myself, ‘who is right for this part? Who will play it the best?’”

Fast forward thirty-five years to his 18th studio album, Down to My Last Bad Habit, which was released last February and features such tracks as the full-flushed out ballad, “I Can’t Do This,” the rollicking “Take Me Down,” to the twangy homage to the late George Jones “Sad One Comin’ On.”

However, Gill recently became “the new kid in town,” when he was asked to join The Eagles for a series of Classic West to East concerts held at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and at Citi Field in New York this past summer. Deeply honored at the invitation, which included the late Glenn Frye’s son Deacon as well, he was quick to talk about the melancholy honor, as Frye was a long-time friend of Gill’s. “Sadly, I got this amazing opportunity, because Glenn is no longer with us,” he

The band initially thought about folding up their tent for good, but decided to find their way and I was so proud to be part of that journey. I hope that with his son and me joining the band, at least temporarily, Glenn is giving the thumbs up. “The first song The Eagles wrote together was ‘Desperado’ and I was overwhelmed that it was one of the songs they wanted me to perform during this series of concerts (which included The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan).” Original band member Don Henley introduced Gill as “one of the finest singers, the finest songwriters, and the finest guitarists America has ever produced.”

Republic Camp where children are bused to her non-working and empty ranch to enjoy being outside in nature. “For the last three summers we have hosted 230 kids every day for two weeks who come from low-income housing, as well as affluent neighborhoods in the area,” she explains. “This is a faith-based, pre-structured camp that is multicultural and multiracial based on reconciliation. We even trailer in eighteen horses so that the campers can get an equine experience as well. My ranch has three historic buildings without running water, so we pitch tents and create community.”

Gill loves to play golf and believes, according to several pros, that he had enough talent to play professionally had he put as much into the game as he has into his music. “Golf has been as big a part of my life as music and I met Glenn (Frye) at a celebrity tournament. I’ve played all over the world and the Amy really loves this time game is a great escape as of year as Christmas music is I don’t think about music while I’m playing golf.” what she loves to do, This love has translated Vince says with pride. into Vinny’s Pro-Celebrity Golf Invitation, which has raised millions of dollars Creating any chance they can to work for junior golf in Tennessee. in the same proximity of one another, Amy recorded Tennessee Christmas at what she Another love of Gill’s is his regular laughingly calls Vince’s in-home studio, breakfast at Noshville, in Green Hills, his ‘man-cave.’ “You open the front door just outside of Nashville, where he and the piano and organ in the living room frequently noshes on ‘the usual’ which are all ready to record, and dozens of is bacon and eggs at the counter. “When beloved guitars line the floor space and the cook recently got sick and ended up walls. W

ith the change of any season, I get excited to make some adjustments, not only with my wardrobe, but my surroundings. It’s a lot like a New Year resolution-putting away your summer attire and bringing out the warm wools and winter scarves for the few months ahead.

The Holidays are also a perfect time to consider how we will wrap all the packages, who we’ll invite, and what we’ll be serving for that special holiday gathering. I can’t wait to get out all the items in my life that are so special and familiar to me. I have collected antique Christmas ornaments for years, and love to tenderly unwrap each one. I can recall where most of them were gathered and collected, as I revisit the memory of each and every one. We all pull out the “tried and true” prized holiday recipes, start cooking and try desperately to rekindle even the aroma of a Holiday past at Grandma’s house. The importance of maintaining familiarity in our surroundings should be nurtured and never denied. For some it may be our favorite sheets and pillow, for others it is the old worn antique you inherited from your parents…the point is, our home is our place to return to and relax in, the place to feel safe and warm. How you define your feel good space is up to each of us. Living in your sanctuary, the place you call home, is ideally where we’d spend much of our quality time. However, if you are like me, that is not mostly the case. I continually strive to become more connected to the beautiful space I call home! So…I’m going into my storage and pulling out the “Season”, and as we do in the spring, clean a little deeper and begin to prepare for the glow of lamplight longer, as the daylight shortens. I love lamps and picture lights and Christmas lights…there’s just something about the warmth it brings. As a child I would cross my eyes, so that I had twice as many lights to see! I also remember the warning my sister would render-that my eyes would stay that way if I didn’t stop! OK. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

about Antibiotics during Cold and Flu Season

By: Dr. Dara Lowe

A

hh, it’s that time again. Cooler days, fall colors, pumpkin pie and…runny noses? Yes, that’s right. While, we love the incoming fall season for many reasons, it also ushers in another cold and flu season and leaves us and our loved ones susceptible to sickness. It is this time of year that I see many of my patients, eager to be proactive about their health, coming into my office presenting common cold and flu symptoms asking me to prescribe an antibiotic. While in certain cases an antibiotic is a warranted, they are often overused leading to antibiotic resistance. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year in the United States, 47 million unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions are written in doctor’s offices, emergency rooms and hospital-based clinics, which make improving antibiotic prescribing and use a national priority. This is an issue that is near and dear to my heart as a family medicine provider who sees

patients of all ages in the DaVita Medical Group office in Monument, Colorado. A message that I often communicate to my patients who ask for antibiotic treatments after 1 or 2 days of experiencing common cold symptoms is to wait. Often, 1-2 days is too soon to determine whether or not their illness is the cause of a viral infection or bacteria. For example, if a patient has an upper respiratory infection, an antibiotic will not help their symptoms whereas taking some time off of school and work to rest and let their body fight the viral infection will. In fact, overuse of antibiotics can have devastating effects on the population. According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, misuse and overuse of antibiotics have contributed to a phenomenon known as antibiotic resistance. This resistance develops when potentially harmful bacteria change in a way that reduces or eliminates the effectiveness of antibiotics. This means that due to overuse of antibiotic prescription and

usage, new diseases are developing every day that won’t respond to any antibiotic on the market. Plus, antibiotics can cause diarrhea, yeast infections, rashes and other undesirable side effects. As a result, I’ve included a few handy tips and helpful reminders about when to see your doctor during cold and flu season. 1). See your doctor if your symptoms gets worse after 7 days or don’t improve within 10 days. 2). See your doctor if your fever lasts 5 or more days or returns after a fever free period. 3). See your doctor if you have shortness of breath or wheezing or if you think you have pneumonia. Antibiotics do no help bronchitis, which typically results in a cough without a fever or shortness of breath. It is normal for a cough from an upper respiratory infection to last for 3 weeks. Finally, see your doctor if you have a severe headache, a severe sore throat or severe sinus pain.

SURGERY

BEYOND HUMAN LIMITS with robotics at Penrose-St. Francis Health Services By: Andrea Sinclair

P

enrose-St. Francis Health Services is a leading provider of advanced, multispecialty, minimally invasive robotic surgery across southern Colorado. Surgery is generally the most effective treatment option for a wide range of conditions but traditional open surgery has its drawbacks – pain, trauma, long recovery time and an increased risk of infection. Fortunately, less invasive options are available to many people facing surgery and at Penrose Hospital, Dr. Benjamin A. Delano with Colorado Springs Surgical Associates has been pioneering robotically-assisted colon and rectal surgeries for half a decade.

Roboticassisted surgery allows the surgeon to control pain much better, minimize hospital stay and enhance recovery protocols

COLivingWell.com

“Robotic-assisted surgery allows the surgeon to control pain much better, minimize hospital stay and enhance recovery protocols because of the procedure is noninvasive,” Delano said. “Less than ten years ago traditional open surgery was common practice, but that required patients to suffer and recover from large incisions, severe trauma to their bodies and much longer hospital stays, sometimes up to 12 days.” Minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery, the latest evolution in surgical technology, offers an effective alternative to traditional open surgery and even laparoscopy, with the best of both techniques. Surgeons like Delano can operate using only one to two-centimeter incisions, with greater precision and control than ever before. Penrose-St. Francis surgeons proudly use the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, which provides a 3D/HD view inside the patient’s body and utilizes tiny instruments and techniques far more precise than the human hand with enhanced vision and control. With robotic-assisted surgery at Penrose-St. Francis, highly-trained and experienced surgeons like Delano can reassure their patients with less blood loss, significantly less pain,

quicker return of bowel function, lower rate of complications, shorter hospital stays, a faster return to normal daily activities and less scarring. As a colorectal surgery expert, Delano has extensive experience and a strong interest in treating colorectal disease, both benign and malignant. Some of the conditions he often treats are colon and rectal cancer, diverticulitis, colon and rectal polyps and anal fissures, polyps or cancers. Delano specializes in Robotic Abdominoperineal Resection (APR), which he performs to surgically remove rectal cancers lying on the anal sphincters, within the rectum. He utilizes the da Vinci System because it allows for easier access to the lower rectum than other approaches, with the benefits of minimally invasive surgery. The state-of-the-art da Vinci uses the latest in surgical and robotics technologies while giving full control to the surgeon, taking surgery beyond the limits of the human hand.

“I control the robot from a computer console and the robot’s arms move with the surgical tools, which helps minimize the pain and risk during the surgery and increases the likelihood of a fast and easy recovery with excellent clinical outcomes,” Delano said.

RECOVER LIKE A TOP ATHLETE Colorado Springs Cryotherapy offers the same NormaTec recovery system used by 97 percent of professional teams. What is the science behind pneumatic compression treatment?

WHAT IS NORMATEC?

RISK AND BENEFITS

Quite simply, the NormaTec recovery system provides enhanced circulation and improved mobility by utilizing compressed air. As a leader in rapid recovery, this system is used by most top athletes around the globe, but is a proven recovery method for anyone with an active lifestyle and those suffering with a variety of cirulatory disorders.

The risks and benefits of using the NormaTec Recovery System are the same as having a massage. If the pressure feels uncomfortable, you can reduce the intensity or stop the session. Similar to massage, the benefits can include the temporary relief of minor muscle aches and pains. It can also temporarily increase circulation in the area being massaged.

WHY USE NORMATEC? The system speeds up recovery, increases circulation, reduces pain and inflammation and is relied on by an astounding 97 percent of professional teams. Their patented Pulse Massage Pattern starts in the foot, hand or lower hip and moves upward zoneby-zone massaging the limb and mobilizing fluid out of the extremities. From the Denver Broncos to the Boston Red Sox, the list of athletes and professional teams using this sytem is staggering. Normatec’s goal is to help every one of their users establish recovery as an integral part of their training and fitness regimen.

BACKED BY RESEARCH In the May 2015 Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research, they concluded that “peristaltic pulse dynamic compression (PPDC) is a promising means of accelerating and enhancing recovery after the normal agressive training that occurs in Olympic and aspiring Olympic athletes.”

THIS ROVER BEGS TO BE

DRIVEN

4.5 out of 5 stars

We spent 72 hours with the 2018 Range Rover Velar, pictured above in Estes Park, Colorado.

Vehicle: 2018 Range Rover Velar in Yulong White Price as tested: $62,253

By: Joshua Cates, Publisher

S 42

ince first hearing whispers about Range Rover debuting an entirely new model, I’ve closely followed the release of the much anticipated 2018 Range Rover Velar. When Land Rover Colorado Springs called and offered up one of the first Velars in Colorado Springs for a review, I immediately cleared my calendar, packed my bags, and planned a road trip with my wife to Estes Park.

Rover models. Heading north, we made a quick stop at the recently opened Le Méridien in downtown Denver. Parking the Velar alongside some of the finest luxury SUVs available, my wife and I paused and looked back – captivated at the aggressive stance and contemporary design. She said to me “this looks like nothing else on the road, it’s just sitting there growling at you - begging to be driven.” I couldn’t agree more.

Within minutes of settling into the Velar’s luxurious cabin, my wife and I quickly realized this was a very special vehicle and much different than previous Range

You literally can’t take your eyes off this striking design. The modern and sleek headlights carry your eye all the way down the perfectly proportioned body and stance.

There’s nothing about the Velar’s interior that feels out of place.

The quiet cabin kept the road noise out and enveloped us in a calming cocoon separated from the outside world.

THE DRIVE As we departed Denver and headed into the canyons outside of Boulder, it was time to put the Velar to the test and see how it would perform in the unforgiving elevation of Colorado. Our Velar came equipped with the R-Dynamic package, 20” satin dark grey wheels, and the 247hp turbocharged 4-cylinder with 8-speed transmission. The Velar pleasantly surprised me as we flew up US-36. Carving into the turns, the Velar planted itself firmly into the corners and had more than enough power to soak up the elevation and pass the out-of-state looky-loos.

THE DESIGN Gerry McGovern, Land Rover’s Chief Design Officer says “we designed the Velar interior to be a calm sanctuary, created through elegant simplicity and a visually reductive approach.” The exterior and interior designs blend beautifully together. Inside the cabin the Velar exudes elegance with wellbuilt controls that feel substantial and meaningful. Debuting the entirely new Range Rover InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, dual 10” Touchscreen monitors, and user-friendly controls now allow the driver or passenger to easily

The Velar is simplistic, yet confident, with little touches and details you really don’t notice until you look closely and spend a little time with the vehicle.

navigate all aspects of interior comfort and media. We particularly enjoyed how the screen mode and steering wheel controls change based on what function you select. A small complaint about using the touchscreens is fingerprints. Really, hasn’t someone figured this out yet? The only other small complaint was that we found the backup camera to be a bit distorted like looking into a fishbowl. However, with the amount of userfriendly tech in this car, I found myself waiting for the 3, 2, 1 countdown from Mission Control. Everything you touch on the inside of the Velar feels far superior to Range Rover designs of the past. The Velar sets a high standard for what a luxury SUV should look and feel like to the eyes and senses.

INSIDE THE CABIN Inside, the Velar entertained us with the exceptional 825-watt Meridian Surround Sound System. Premium leather, modern textiles, floating center AC vents, and a full digital gauge cluster showed off the fact that Range Rover included everything you need and eliminated any excess. The Velar is deceptive, because it drives more like a sports car than a mid-sized SUV. It’s nimble, yet roomy. Sizeable, but still easy to park and maneuver around

town. The massive glass moon roof allows for unobstructed views of the Rocky Mountains and features a large, deployable wind screen, so you really can drive with the roof open at speed and enjoy the experience. Ever since the first Land Rover was conceived in 1947, the company has challenged what’s possible in an off-road vehicle. In the past, when I thought of Land Rover, I envisioned a vehicle designed to tackle any rugged terrain possible, but with odd, sometimes quirky and mostly frustrating functionality. That is no longer the case! The Velar beautifully combines the legendary physical capabilities of a Land Rover with driver entertainment and luxurious comfort in a price that is actually attainable. $62,253 for our test model - compared to the $100,000+ price tag for the bigger Rover. After spending time in the Velar, I give this sports SUV a 4.5 out of 5 stars. The Velar is a sexy, vivacious, fun, well thought out vehicle that lived up to every expectation and killed any lingering bias I had towards Land Rovers of the past. After setting an all-time sales record in 2016, I have no doubt the Velar will be a paramount vehicle in the future of Land Rover. Winter 2017

the vaccination

DEBATE

By: Laurinda Flaks

I

am not aware of any topic more hotly debated among people in the pet caretaking industry than vaccinations for dogs and cats. Do the benefits outweigh the risks or vice versa? The arguments include the overvaccination of our pets, how often should vaccinations be given to assure immunization, and what vaccinations are truly necessary. Vaccinating our pets has long been considered beneficial in managing their health. There is also concern over the risks of vaccinations. Minor reactions can include loss of appetite, pain, or swelling at the injection site to more severe reactions of difficulty breathing, lameness, or seizures. There is some speculation among Holistic veterinary practitioners that repeated vaccinations can weaken an animal’s immune system and cause autoimmune disorders. WHAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED WHEN DECIDING TO VACCINATE YOUR PET The first consideration is what is mandated by state law. Other factors are age, health history, lifestyle, and environment. Vaccines are a preventive measure against infectious diseases that affect pets.

46

COLivingWell.com

THERE ARE TWO GROUPS OF VACCINATIONS FOR DISEASES - CORE AND NON-CORE Core vaccinations are considered in the prevention of severe diseases that are highly contagious, difficult to treat effectively, and can be fatal. One core disease that can be passed on to humans is Rabies. It is the one pet vaccination that is required by Colorado law. All dogs and cats over the age of six months must be vaccinated by a licensed Colorado veterinarian. Owners are then required to show proof of vaccination, usually in the form of a tag with the vaccination information, provided by their Vet. The other core vaccines for dogs are canine parvovirus, distemper, and canine hepatitis. For cats, the core vaccines are panleukopenia, feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus type 1, and rabies. Non-core vaccinations are generally given dependent on lifestyle and exposure to risk. These vaccinations for dogs include Bordetella (canine cough complex), Leptospirosis, Lyme Disease, and more recently Canine Influenza. Non-core for cats include Feline Leukemia, Chlamydophila Felis, and Bordetella.

KENNEL COUGH AND REQUIREMENTS As a standard in the Dog Daycare and Boarding industry, most facilities require all core vaccinations. Of the non-core vaccines, Bordetella tops the list of required vaccinations due to the nature of the environment. Bordetella (kennel cough) is a respiratory infection caused by bacteria and spread through airborne contaminants which can

contact, barking, sneezing, and contaminated objects. Symptoms, which may resemble kennel cough, are a cough, thick nasal discharge, eye discharge, fever, and loss of appetite. Some infected dogs will not show any signs of illness, but are still most contagious during the two to four-day virus incubation period. Because the virus is so contagious, most dogs exposed will become infected. The recovery period is

Vaccinating our pets has long been considered beneficial in managing their health. There is also concern over the risks of vaccinations.

be transferred to shared water bowls, toys, and kennels. Incubation for kennel cough is approximately 5 to 10 days and symptoms include cough, fever, sneezing, nasal discharge, and loss of appetite. Left untreated, Bordetella can lead to pneumonia and secondary respiratory illnesses. THE DOG FLU Another illness causing concern in the industry is Canine Influenza, otherwise known as the dog flu. There are two strains of the virus which include H3N8 and H3N2. H3N8 was first identified in Florida in 2004. The second strain, H3N2, was reported in Chicago in 2015. It caused by the canine influenza virus (CIV) and is highly contagious and spread by direct

between two to three weeks, but some dogs can develop secondary bacterial infections leading to pneumonia. There are vaccinations available for both strains and are considered a non-core or lifestyle vaccination. The vaccination is recommended for dogs at risk due to an increased exposure to other dogs such as a boarding or daycare environment, dog parks, and dog shows. The soundest advice concerning all vaccinations is talking with your Vet and determining what is in the best interest for your pet to keep them healthy. BARRETT’S ESOPHAGUS AND ESOPHAGEAL CANCER Esophageal cancer (17,000 cases per year) has been steadily increasing in incidence in the U.S. over the past three decades. Dr. Austin Garza

M

ost Americans are familiar with screening tests for cancers of colon, breast, and prostate, but screening for esophageal cancer is off the radar for many. Esophageal cancer (17,000 cases/year) has been steadily increasing in incidence in the U.S. over the past three decades. While still far less common than colon cancer (135,000 cases/year), mortality is high. The five-year survival rate for esophageal cancer is just 18%. With such a deadly disease, screening becomes important. 48

COLivingWell.com

To discuss current thinking about screening for esophageal cancer, I am going to talk about baseball. Ted Williams was the last baseball player to hit .400 in a season. Getting a hit 2 out of 5 times up at bat shouldn’t be so hard, one might think, but it has been 76 years since it was done. “Mr. 2 out of 5” is a good way to think about acid-reflux and esophageal cancer as well. Acid reflux is a very common problem. We estimate 20-30% of Americans have acid reflux symptoms (burning in the chest,

chest pain, a sour taste in the mouth) on a weekly basis (perhaps a 100 million of us!). It is estimated that 10% of these chronic acid reflux sufferers have a condition known as Barrett’s Esophagus (BE), a number estimated to be up to 10 million Americans. Named after an Australian physician, Sir Norman Barrett, BE is a condition in which flat pancake-like cells (or squamous cells, typically of the lower esophagus) undergo a transformation to box-like cells more typically seen in the stomach. This change can help with symptoms. These “columnar” cells can release bicarbonate

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dr. Austin Garza performs all endoscopic procedures, including colonoscopy, EGD, ERCP and EUS. He has performed over 1000 EUS procedures at Penrose Hospital to diagnose and stage gastrointestinal malignancy, as well to palliate pain from pancreatic cancer.

to help buffer against stomach acid, but anytime the body’s cells are induced to change their nature, uncontrolled cell change and growth, otherwise known as cancer, can result. As a result, BE is a recognized risk factor for a type of cancer of the esophagus, known as adenocarcinoma. Esophageal adenocarcinoma is on the rise in the U.S. and the mortality rate is staggering.

Who should be screened for BE, and therefore screened for esophageal cancer? Let’s go back to Mr. Williams, or “Mr. two out of five.” First off, only men (“Mr.”) have been shown to benefit from BE screening. And, you must have had reflux for at least five years. BE does not develop from short-term symptoms. BE does occur in women, but it is far less common than in men. BE also occurs in patients of both sexes without acid-reflux symptoms,

highlighting the difficulty in targeted screening programs. Secondly, one must have 2 out of 5 of the following risk factors - smoking, age less than 50, caucasian race, waist circumference less than 40 inches or a family history of esophageal cancer.

Fortunately, acid reflux is far more common than esophageal cancer, and we can offer guidance and management for chronic GERD. There are many aspects of acid reflux that are brought up by our patients: How safe are drugs like Nexium and Prilosec? How long can I take them? What are the options for treating GERD besides taking medication?

There are other important aspects of acid reflux that should warrant an upper endoscopy:

• • • •

Uncontrolled GERD symptoms despite medication Trouble swallowing/food sticking Pain with swallowing Unexplained weight loss

If you meet these criteria, an upper endoscopy is recommended. This involves a flexible tube with a camera attached (an endoscope) inserted to examine the esophagus and stomach, done under sedation. If Barrett’s Esophagus is suspected, biopsies are taken.

We welcome these questions! Please call us at (719) 635-7321 to schedule an appointment with one of our eight physicians or six NP/ PA providers. To learn more about our practice visit us online at https://www.agcosprings.com Winter 2017

IDIOPATHIC PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy typically begin in the longest nerves first, usually in the toes and feet. Symptoms can include numbness or altered sensations such as a bunched sock feeling under the toes.

By: Dr. Katharine Leppard

P

eripheral neuropathy is damage to the nerves in the legs and arms. Idiopathic means that the underlying cause of the nerve damage is unknown.

This condition can have significant symptoms, and some patients notice no symptoms at all. The Cleveland Clinic estimates that 25 to 30% of Americans will be affected by peripheral neuropathy. They estimate that 30 to 40% of cases of peripheral neuropathy are idiopathic in nature. Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy typically begin in the longest nerves first, usually in the toes and feet. Symptoms can include numbness, tingling, pain and oversensitivity to

touch. Strange altered sensations may be present. Patients can describe the feeling that they have a bunched sock under their toes when they are not wearing a sock. Others report it feels as if they are walking on leather, rocks or have something wrapped around their feet. Sometimes a stimulus that is not normally painful is perceived as painful, such as a sheet touching a foot. Some people do not notice any symptoms at all. These patients do not notice that they have lost sensation in their feet as the loss has been so gradual that it seems normal. They have no abnormal or strange sensations in their feet, but may gradually lose balance or develop a painless sore on their foot that normally would be expected to be painful. Peripheral neuropathy can lead to loss of balance, weakness, hammer toes and foot deformity. Peripheral neuropathy may require the use of a cane, a walker or foot braces if severe. Peripheral neuropathy typically worsens as a person ages. Loss of sensation in the feet can be serious. A person can develop a sore on the foot that they do not feel even if it becomes severely infected. This can lead to amputation of toes, legs and, in rare cases, even to death.

MILD

MODERATE POLYNEUROPATHY

52

COLivingWell.com

SEVERE

The Cleveland Clinic estimates that 25 to 30% of Americans will be affected by peripheral neuropathy.

The loss of balance associated with peripheral neuropathy is also very serious as this puts a person at higher risk of falls. Falls can have catastrophic consequences.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Treatment

----- 1 -----

In order to diagnose a peripheral neuropathy as idiopathic, one must first evaluate for treatable causes of peripheral neuropathy. Evaluate for a demyelinating peripheral neuropathy, this is done by an EMG test. Also, do blood work that includes hemoglobin A-1 C to evaluate for pre-diabetes, a vitamin B12 blood test with the goal being greater than 400, a TSH to rule out hypothyroidism and a serum protein electrophoresis test. If the peripheral neuropathy is idiopathic, all of these lab tests will be normal.

----- 2 -----

Excessive alcohol can cause a peripheral neuropathy determination that this is a cause is based on patient history.

----- 3 -----

Monitoring feet for any sores or cuts is important, and vigilant care if a wound is discovered.

----- 4 -----

There are medications that can help neuropathic pain. These include Neurontin (Gabapentin), Lyrica (Pregabalin) and Cymbalta (Duloxetine). These medications only help with pain. They do not correct numbness or balance problems. These medications do not slow the progression of the neuropathy as we age. These medications also have risk of dizziness, which can increase fall risk even further.

----- 5 -----

Avoid excess vitamin B6 - Vitamin B6 doses greater than 100 mg per day are toxic to the nerves and actually cause nerve damage. Vitamin B6 is included in prescription medications such as Metanex (used for neuropathy) as well as vitamin tablets and supplements

----- 6 -----

Avoid falls - eliminate throw rugs, have a night light, use a cane or walker for safety. Most falls occur inside the home.

----- 7 -----

Avoid smoking and limit alcohol intake.

----- 8 -----

Laser treatment may help temporarily with pain, it does not fix numbness or cure neuropathy.

----- 9 -----

Supplements such as alpha lipoic acid are available, but uncertain to be of benefit.

----- 10 -----

Regular exercise such as walking improves circulation, helps control weight and helps maintain balance.

Idiopathic peripheral neuropathy is very frustrating when it is found in a patient who is otherwise healthy. Knowledge about the condition is important. Ruling out treatable causes of peripheral neuropathy is imperative. Knowing that peripheral neuropathy increases the risk of falls can lead a person to be more careful and help prevent a fall. Medication treatment can help with neuropathic pain symptoms, but at this time there is no cure for idiopathic peripheral neuropathy. Exclusive Interview with Governor Hickenlooper

This past July I had the honor of sitting down with Governor John Hickenlooper at the Colorado Governor’s Mansion. What a stunning backdrop for a photoshoot with the Governor and his wife. In our time together we talked about our shared love for Colorado’s live music scene and diversity of spectacular venues, his favorite holiday memories and traditions, the best advice he’s been given and what a perfect day looks like when he has a moment to escape the demands of his position.

Q:

What is your best childhood holiday memory?

A:

That’s an easy one to recall. It was outside Philadelphia, where I grew up. I remember at Christmas, sitting on my Grandfather’s lap as he banged on the piano; leading the family in our favorite Christmas carols.

Q:

What is one thing the Hickenlooper household must do during the holidays?

A:

The one thing we always do is have a holiday party. I really look forward to gathering together with our friends and celebrating all the good things we have. This is usually a pretty large party and it is held at the Governor’s Mansion. The Mansion gets decorated the weekend after Thanksgiving. There’s a whole troop of volunteers. It’s absolutely amazing and beautiful, making for a wonderful place to have a party. Last year we sat 62 people down the main hallway for Thanksgiving Day dinner. For years we’ve been inviting our old friends and family members. We call it the Thanksgiving Orphan Dinner because so many of us have migrated to Colorado, and many times friends can’t or don’t go home for the holidays. Years-ago we called them our ‘Orphans’. We still keep this tradition alive and it’s something I truly cherish each year.

Q:

What is the best gift you’ve ever received or gifted to someone else?

A:

The best gift ever was when I was 9 years old. My brother, Sydney, who is 7 years older, collected Lionel electric trains; and I mean the big ones! My Dad passed away the previous February, so this was a particularly hard Christmas. Each year, the day after Thanksgiving, my older brother would always set-up his electric train set in his bedroom. It was huge; easily filling his entire bedroom with locomotives, trains, tracks and at least 12 electric switches. The Christmas after Dad died, Sydney gave me his train set! On Christmas morning there were tons of white bed sheets draped over a mass by the Christmas Tree. On top was a card from Sydney to me. It said ‘I spent most of my life collecting this train set and now I gift to you.’ – Sydney.

Q:

What has life been like for you and your family living at the Governor’s Mansion this year?

A:

Our family has lived at the Mansion fulltime now for 16 months. Lately, it’s really felt like home, it’s a magical place. I still don’t feel like it’s my home, but rather Colorado’s home. It’s such a special home and during the Christmas season it’s open almost every day for public tours. My affection continues to increase in magnitude for this home.

Q:

You’ve had a goal to make Colorado the nation’s healthiest state. What do you want to accomplish on that front before your term ends?

A:

Getting more of our youth into outdoor recreation is a goal of mine. I’d really like to see our kids get their faces out of their electronic devices and get outdoors. Currently, we’re working on a phone app called CO Trail Explorer – part of the Colorado the Beautiful program, that I hope will help with that goal. The app will have any trail (state, federal, county, etc.) loaded into this mapping system. You’ll be able to upload photographs, notes, comments and audio right where you’re hiking. We hope this connects with our youth and gets them outdoors more to track their health progress and engage with nature.

Q:

What is the best advice you’ve been given as Governor?

A:

There’s a woman named Pam Patton, who I was interviewing to see about serving on the Public Utilities Commission. She was a Democrat from a very conservative part of the state. I asked her how she could persuade those folks on the potential dangers of climate change. She told me this. ‘One thing I’ve learned in my life is that the only real way to get someone to change their mind is to listen harder to what they have to say.’ I’ve always felt this is great advice.

Q:

What is one thing still on your personal “Bucket List’?

Q:

When you have a moment to escape the demands of your position, what does a perfect day look like for Governor John Hickenlooper?

A:

A perfect day is always with my family. I love anything outdoors, going out for a hike, or just working on a project around the house. One thing I love is watching my son Teddy play baseball and soccer. He’s 15 now and really plays and practices hard. This is where I find my true enjoyment. I love seeing him push to be the best he can be and challenge himself. He works so hard at it, I know he’s going to just keep getting better. Most importantly he’s a great teammate; that’s really what sports is all about, learning to work with other people. A team is only as successful as its weakest link.

A:

I’ve always wanted to hike the Colorado Trail from one end to the other. I’ve been able to do many great things in Colorado and have even hiked parts of the trail, but never the entire thing.

One of the most common complaints when seeking dental care is jaw pain, a common problem estimated to affect up to 31% of adults in America.

JAW PAIN

P

atients seek care from their dentist for many different complaints. One of these is jaw pain and is a common problem estimated to affect up to 31% of adults in America, women more often than men. The common term used to describe jaw pain is TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder) and includes a group of disorders that cause jaw pain and dysfunction. Common symptoms associated with this grouping can be pain near the ears, limited or pain when opening or closing the mouth, clicking or popping sounds with joint function, headaches, and even face pain. Although there are other causes of TMD, bruxism is one of the more common. Bruxism is defined as excessive jaw clenching or teeth grinding.

Causes of Bruxism There are several factors that can cause someone to clench or grind their teeth. Perhaps the most common is the familiar root of many health problems--stress. 58

COLivingWell.com

If one is unable to effectively manage this stress, it can lead to physical symptoms. People are often familiar with stress-causing tension in the shoulders, but a lesser known physical reaction is bruxism. Many times, this happens at night while asleep, but it can also happen during waking hours. Often, people are unaware that they’re doing it! This stress may be current, but it can also be related to trauma experienced in the past. It is well documented that those suffering from even minor PTSD have a much higher incidence of bruxism than the average public.

not taking the medications.2 Commonly prescribed SSRIs include Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, and Lexapro. Frequently prescribed SNRIs include Effexor, Cymbalta, and Pristiq. However, these lists are by no means exclusive.

Medications

Another factor that can cause someone to clench or brux their teeth is something called an “occlusal interference.” the occlusion is how the teeth fit together, both when biting straight down and when grinding side to side. Any change in the way your teeth meet or slide across each other is called an interference. These changes in the bite might result from recent dental work, a broken tooth, a defective filling, or trauma to the jaw.

Common medications also increase the incidence of clenching and bruxing. Perhaps the most common offender is a family of antidepressant medications. The Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) and Selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRI) have shown to increase the incidence of bruxism by as much as 10% over those

Other substances that can increase clenching and bruxing, especially in people prone to those activities, include alcohol, caffeine, and recreational stimulants (both legal and illegal).

Occlusal Interferences

EFFECTS OF BRUXISM Myofacial Pain The most common symptom resulting from bruxism is jaw pain associated with muscle soreness caused by overuse. This pain can present as a generalized ache on one or both sides of the jaw and can range from mild to severe, and is often mistaken for a toothache. It can, at times, limit how much one can open their mouth. This muscle pain can also appear as a headache, especially on the side of the head or up onto the forehead. Waking with a headache in the morning is a strong indicator of nighttime bruxing.

Joint Pain Occasionally, overuse of the jaw muscles can cause a derangement of the jaw joints. Immediate symptoms of this include noise in the joint(s) when opening and closing, like a click or a pop. Sometimes these joint noises are accompanied by a sharp pain or a lingering ache. If treated early, sometimes the joint derangement can be fixed, but the longer the popping/ clicking has been present the less chance of it ever going back to normal. On the bright side, if there’s no pain, then nothing really needs to be done.

Tooth Pain Constant force on the teeth

can lead to inflammation of the micro-ligaments holding the teeth in the jaw bone. This can make eating anything but very soft foods uncomfortable. In extreme cases, teeth can even be cracked by the forces of bruxism. This can be a very painful situation. It is important to note that a patient can experience more than one of the above symptoms, and every patient may experience them differently.

Treatments There are several different options available to treat bruxism. If possible, the easiest option is to encourage the patient to stop the habit that’s causing the discomfort. Admittedly, that’s often easier said than done! Also, if the habit is occurring while sleeping, it can be impossible simply to stop! Sometimes seeking behavioral health counseling is beneficial for those dealing with present or past stresses. There may be medications that can be prescribed to help a patient decrease the intensity or duration of their clenching. If the bruxism is related to a medication being taken, then the dentist may consult with a patient’s physician to determine if modifying the medication or the dosage is a possibility. It is NEVER encouraged for a patient to simply stop taking a medication prescribed by their physician as that can have catastrophic outcomes. However, dentists will work with physicians to achieve satisfactory results.

ridges and grooves of opposing teeth from interlocking. It can decrease the force of the clenching, protect your teeth from fractures, and stop that awful grinding sound your partner may complain about! Every case of bruxism is different. If you are experiencing symptoms that are affecting your quality of life, then you should visit your dentist for an evaluation to discuss your individual treatment options.

THE FLAKS FAMILY THIS LOCAL FAMILY BUSINESS HAS GONE TO THE DOGS

Inside the walls of 815 S. Sierra Madre is a fourth-generation business that’s literally gone to the dogs (and cats). The family legacy started in 1916 when the Flaks family launched a tobacco business in Denver. Fast forward to 1950 and the opening of the Flaks Mercantile Company right here in Colorado Springs. “The year was 1972 and our growth demanded we build a new warehouse,” says Greg Flaks. “My mother was an artist so she designed the paneled front of our building – an original for Colorado Springs.”

F

ast forward a bit more to 2015 when David and Laurinda, Greg and Lesley’s son and daughter-in-law, approached the family about opening a modern, safe and state of the art dog and cat boarding and daycare facility in the family’s warehouse. “I was having a difficult time finding accommodations for our dogs,” Laurinda says. The family, curious to learn more, attended the Pet Boarding Expo in Burbank California. “After exploring the opportunity and realizing the asset we could provide to our town, the four of us opened BamPaws in March of 2017 and business is barking. “One of the biggest needs we wanted to address when developing our business model was to have staff on location 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year for the pet’s safety and owner’s peace of mind,” says Dave. “We are passionate about our pets and wanted our business to be one of high-touch and personal care in every way,” says Laurinda. This is evident by the care and attention the family gave to every strand of their business DNA. Even the air-exchange system, which is crucial for a safe and healthy pet environment, is first class. Details like pet quiet time, pet TV, private pet hotel rooms and outdoor, secure play areas all add up to a recipe for success. “In 2018, we plan to start phase two, which includes building an outdoor pool area, retail location, pick up, delivery, coffee bar, and even more kennels to accommodate our growth. We want to be a one-stop shop for everyone’s pet needs,” says Dave. Greg’s wife Lesley was instrumental in visualizing the taglines and colors of the BamPaws brand and today helps with the ongoing marketing of BamPaws, making this a true family endeavor.

PROCESS The Foundation of Custom Homebuilding By: Tim King

S

peak with anyone who has built a custom home and the chances are good that their experience was lukewarm at best. The industry is rampant with stories of bait and switch, blown budgets, and seemingly endless miscommunications. The foundational question to ask when interviewing custom homebuilders is, “What processes do you have that differentiate your company from all of the rest?” My experience is that most builders are good at just that – building.

62

COLivingWell.com

But what truly separates one from another is the way their company is structured to assist the buyer in working through each step of the build process.

The Design When building custom, the best builds are the ones that take a team approach including buyer, builder, and architect. While most custom builders tend to prefer that buyers come to them with a pre-existing plan, what is easiest for the builder is not always what is best for the buyer. In our experience, there is real synergy in starting with a vision and a blank slate and allowing the home to unfold from there.

A talented architectural firm can extrude key ideas, present novel concepts, and often provide early conceptual sketches to assist the buyer in creating the desired look and arrangement of living spaces to fit their unique lifestyle. When the builder is involved in this process it can really go a long way in protecting the buyers’ budget as well. Often custom homebuilding achieves its best results when architectural concepts are married with practical and affordable building techniques.

Selections It has been estimated that there are over 250,000 parts and pieces that go into building a home. Buyers can be overwhelmed with the process of making all of the required selections for flooring, plumbing, paint colors, roofing, exterior selections, etc.

For this reason, builders who have on-staff interior designers have a definite advantage over those who do not. A designer can pull together your selections with or for you and eliminate an enormous amount of time and stress from the process. Before selecting a builder, ask what assistance is available for the selection process. If you’re on your own in visiting each design center, you may be in for some very stressful and budget-busting surprises.

The Construction Software Lastly, ask if your builder has an online software program that will allow you to track and direct the build. When building a custom home, the more communication the better. Our favorite software is one that enables our buyers to track their budget, sign change orders online, review pertinent documents, and selections and also correspond with various managers providing critical support for the build.

Adequate Support Lastly, choose a builder large enough to ensure that you will receive adequate support for all stages of the build. Sometimes smaller builders struggle to keep up with all of the responsibilities that come with homebuilding. Does the builder you are interviewing have on-staff accounting personnel to assist with all of the ongoing budget updates that you will need? Do they have a purchasing department to elicit multiple bids on upgrade requests? Is there a certified interior designer on staff to assist with their selections? Do they have a full-time construction manager dedicated to your home? How available is the owner to meet on-site when needed? Is there a project manager assigned to your build?

Ultimately, the more specific the processes of the builder, the smoother the build will be, resulting in a better homebuilding experience. GIVING BACK

// In this edition: Pikes Peak Therapeutic Riding Center

Our interview with Shannon Mitchell, PPTRC’s Executive Director

DONATE // VOLUNTEER Pikes Peak Therapeutic Riding Center www.pptrc.org 719-495-3908 pptrc@pptrc.org

LW: Describe your passion for the mission. PPTRC: Our mission is to change the lives of individuals with unique needs by partnering with the horse. The feeling you get when you are around these majestic animals is unmatched. I know if a horse can completely flip my day from bad to good, they can do that, and so much more, for someone that is in need. I have seen kids speak their first words on the back of a horse, people start walking because of this therapy and people hug their loved ones for the first time in years because of what they learned from their therapy horse. LW: What is your best memory from this past year? PPTRC: My best memory from this past year was a particular gentleman that had really struggled with PTSD and finding a therapy that would help him. He was on the verge of taking his own life when someone suggested horse-centered therapy. Once he built up the courage to enter the arena it was many weeks before he even felt comfortable near the horses. By the last week he had built confidence and 64

COLivingWell.com

was able to lead the horses around with little to no resistance. During one particular session he was really emotional, saying he could feel the weight he had been carrying lifted. He no longer had urges to commit suicide, he had re-established relationships with his family, and he ultimately felt like he could live his life again. It was one of the most amazing things I have witnessed during my time with the organization. LW: How has your program improved over time? PPTRC: When PPTRC was founded in 1981 it was a small backyard organization who served only a few people each week. Since then we have grown to serving approximately 120 clients each week and we have a wait list of over 40 people. LW: What are the biggest obstacles that inhibit your mission and how do you plan to overcome them? PPTRC: One of the biggest obstacles we face is the inability to bill insurance for many of our services. Equine therapy is still considered an experimental treatment by insurance

companies. This makes it difficult to serve everyone who needs our services. To overcome this obstacle we continue to look for additional funding opportunities to give us the ability to serve those whose insurance won’t cover their treatment. A second obstacle is a lack of space at our current facilities. In the coming year we are dedicated to working with our landlords and finding ways to expand our footprint at both of our locations. We are also looking to build additional community partnerships, which will allow us to provide services at additional facilities and therefore impact more lives. LW: What are your biggest needs for 2018? PPTRC: Additional funding. With an ever growing wait list, we continue to look for new ways to fund additional clients. Every client who participates in our services (currently 120 per week) receives an average of $5,200 in supplemental funding per year. In order to expand our services to the people in the Pikes Peak region who so desperately need help, we need additional funds.

MEANINGFUL ACTIVITIES for those with Alzheimer’s or Dementia

M

eaningful activities can significantly enhance the quality of life in a person with Alzheimer’s or dementia. In the early stages, the person may withdraw from activities but it is important to find ways to connect. In the later stages and as the disease progresses, it is important to make adjustments to help keep them engaged in the activities. Here are three things The Palisades at Broadmoor Park utilizes when developing our programs specifically for those with dementia.

NUMBER ONE Respect the Past. A person with dementia may be able to play simple songs learned on the piano years ago. A former office worker might enjoy activities that involve organizing, like putting coins in a holder or making a to-do list. A farmer or gardener may take pleasure in working in a garden. Bring these skills into daily activities.

NUMBER THREE Focus on Enjoyment, Not Achievement. Find activities that build on remaining skills and talents. A professional artist might become frustrated over the declining quality of work, but an amateur might enjoy a new opportunity for selfexpression. The most important thing to keep in mind is to adjust activities over time as the disease progresses. Stay alerted to likes and dislikes, frustration levels increasing, or waning attention span as cues to modify the activity. If they insist on doing it a different way, let it happen, and change it later if necessary. It’s always important to remain flexible.

NUMBER TWO Be Aware of Physical Limitations. Do they get tired quickly or have difficulty seeing, hearing or performing simple movements? If they have limited hearing, add more visual instructions to help them understand the activity.
