SECOND HOME
This is a project for third year Studio sponsered by Kroger for its new store in Corryville, Cincinnati. This was a full semester project, and students got to communicate with clients thoroughly during the process. At the end of semester, students visited the headquarter of Kroger, presented designs to staffs, and all the designs were voted for awards. Different from other Kroger stores in town, this store is going to have a Mezzanine floor, half of which will be serving as a third place. Kroger not only wants the store to be a supermarket, but also a place for people to hang out, a “home” for their customers. Kroger were very open to students’ ideas about where Kroger is moving towards either realistically or inspirationally. The “Second Home” team (Ludan Chen, Cai Zeng, Xinfang Zhang), proposed a design solution that encourages a good relationship between Kroger and their customers. This “Second Home” idea aims to bring customers feelings of warmth, relaxation, and security; it also helps bringing together the community, including employees of Kroger.

This Kroger is a renovation store on its original site in Corryville. It is adjacent to the main campus of University of Cincinnati, which makes the student body the main target; while it also welcomes the larger community.
This interior design part of project locates at the North-Western corner of the new Corryville store. It covers from the food vendor area on the ground floor to the Mezzanine above.

This roof type symbolizes an open space that invites all customers to dine in a relaxing environment.
This roof type is used in the homey living area, where customers can socialize and interact freely under the half open roof, while maintaining a sense of security.
This roof creates an enclosed space for people to have more private conversations or work on personal tasks in a more quiet and calming atmosphere.

In order to create a warm and homey feeling of the space, we decided to design it as a loft space with materials in warm color tones. The furniture and design on the first floor, which is the shopping floor, are more standard with commercial settings; while those on the mezzanine floor are more residential and are casually laid out, in order to make customers feel that they are part of the “home”.

On the ground floor, we opened up a new entrance at the corner for customers coming to the Second Home directly. There are graphics on exterior walls that attract people’s attention. The Kitchen 3,also know as the food vendor, is on the ground floor for customers to pick out food.
The Quick Dine area 2 has both soft and hard seatings; it is for customers who are in rush and finish meal in short time period. Customers could also bring food to the outdoor seatings 1 to enjoy the sun.

While the bar 5 was originally planned in Kroger’s program, we also suggested Kroger to provide a juice bar 5 service for making fresh juice. Customers could pick out fruits from downstairs or buy at the counter, and ask Kroger to squeeze fresh juice for free, which also corresponds to Kroger’s goal of promoting health. In the Living area 7 , we created a living room-like space for people to hang out, like watch football games. We also suggest Kroger to provide a rent-out service for customers who like to rent this space and hold events here, such as birthday parties. And the Lounge 6 is designed for those who need quietness for conversations or finishing tasks.

FAIRY DREAM
This is a half semester project during the exchange semester in HFT, Stuttgart, Germany. The client was from Bundesgartenschau, also known as Buga Flower Show. Our studio was asked to design for the flower show in 2019 in a warehouse of 1000 sqm. At first, each student came up with one concept design for as competition. Then, all the ideas were to be merged into 10 ideas (10 groups). Each group would work with one florist to further improve the design. One of the design challenge was to invite more young people come visit the show, since there has always been older generation who seemed to be interested. I came up with the fairytale concept, which aimed to create a fairy world that invites visitors to dive into the dreamy world in the companion of natural elements, including flowers, green hills, clouds, and so on. This idea was favored by professor and the client, then was led to the second part of design. Team members included: Ludan Chen, Lexy Martone, Malina Mayer, and Klarissa Kock.

Lexy
na Mayer, 和 Klarissa Kock。

It was a challenge to decide what was too realistic for a real space in a fairy world, if everything was from the nature. The team finally decided to be abstract in using 2D materials when recreating the nature, such as the trees, clouds, and animals. We even painted the hills white to match with the white material of fairy elements. The only thing seems realistic would be the flowers, which is the main focus. The pathways are in organic forms, creating different angles of experiences for visitors.

Since all elements are white, it is easy to project lights, effects, and moving elements on them to make the space more vivid. Renderings done by myself were to emphasize the light and shadow when the projection effects are on/off. (Used Sketchup, Podium, and Photoshop)

BUILDING FROM WITHOUT
This is a project for Design Studio during the first semester of my second year program. The concept throughout is to experience “form suggests function” instead of “form follows function”. The design process of “building from without” looks at the architectural envelop (apertures, roofs and facades) as the primary device of investigation, so we designed from the outside to the inside. We were asked to design a building on top of a garage on a site located in downtown Cincinnati. The building was required to have three programs including a required swimming pool. Besides that, I have chosen shopping units and bars. We started by documenting existing examples of 9 open typologies around the community within the choices of apertures, roofs or facades. The typology chosen for this project was facades, which is also the same as mass.

The design started with exploring for residential houses with different roof types and geometric shapes, and made 3D models of them in Rhino. Inspired by Habitat 67 by Moshe Safdie, I started experiencing the solid and void by stacking, merging, rotating, scaling, copying and pasting them. In order to achieve the goal of “form suggests function”, I focused more on how to make spaces more intriguing to the people that walk through it by the contrast of openness and close, light and dark, plane and angles. I also tried flipping the buildings to make roofs as floor plate, and foundation as roofs. The set of 9 houses were copied and pasted three times, so there are a total of 27 houses. All the individual houses offset each other, so there’s originally no flooring distinction; but for the ease of understanding the space, I divided them into three floors in the drawings.

On the left page, the drawing shows the circulation within the space. The first level is mostly shopping units with some cafes and restrooms. Customers can go up to the second floor by the elevators or by the main staircase in the middle. The second level has some connected shopping units with some individual bars, so customers can choose whether they want to start by doing some shopping or go directly into the bars, according to their personal preferred routes. The main platform, for people to hang out outdoors with drink in hands while having views of the pool, is also located on the second level. The third level has some bars for latenight parties, if people really want to be on the top of the city. On the right page are some photographs of the 3D printed physical model of the design, which are to emphasize the interesting light and shadow effect the space creates.

PIXEL
This is a team project lasted the whole second semester of our second year program. The project was originally a design competition for “Workplace of The Future”, which asks students to create a 10-page presentation to introduce their design for a future workplace. Our professors took the competition form, and introduced the “hacker space” as our potential client. The Pixel team (Ludan Chen, Sisi Zhang & Xuan Zhang) introduced a high-tech Pixel System, which could be installed into any building. It allows users to change interior components of work place according to users’ schedule and personal needs by extending each pixel unit. The pixel system allows users to occupy the space in an efficient way by transforming an unused space with a space in need; it also gives users the flexibility to have a variety of work spaces according to their personalities and project needs. (The original graphic format is kept to show the integrity of the whole presentation)

THE SECRET ROOM
This was another project for Design Studio in the first semester of my second year. The concept for this project was that each culture has a secret room, and it’s forbidden for all types of possible reasons, yet the space itself is interesting and has various ways of being “secret”. While the definition of “secret” is open to students’ interpretation, students were asked to individually choose an architect and one of his/her works in Chicago while we took a trip there and explored the buildings. The building chosen here was the Poetry Foundation by John Ronan.

Public Libraries
Students were asked to trace over and explode the existing floor plan of the chosen building in AutoCAD, and then use the “copy and paste” method to generate a field operation in the spirit of Archizoom’s No-Stop City. By looking at the plan of Poetry Foundation, I found the public space (libraries), private space (meeting rooms and narrow corridors), and outdoor greeneries interwining each other. So I exploded the plan into these 3 portions and started to rotate them, scaling them up and down, mirroring them, and rearranging them, in order to create a maze-like master planning.
33
34
Afterwards, students were to zoom in the plan to choose five spaces and three dimensionalize them. Besides that, I also elevated them to different levels, and tried rotating them. I also elevated the greenery spaces and made them into vertical public spaces. I kept John Ronan’s idea of interwining the spaces, and I also realized his use of contrast of openness and narrowness within the spaces to put effect on people’s view and experiences. So I decided to make my secret room visible, so that it is in the center of all other public spaces, yet not accessible to the public. The secret is that the “invisible” entrance (a glass elevator) is hidden behind and avoids all possible views, so that only the people who own it would know where it is. The rooms within the secret room has layers of secretness as well.

LINE | PLANE | BALANCE CUBE These are series of projects for Design Lab at the very beginning of the first semester of our first year program. The concept was to understand the space through the three basic forms - line, plane, and cube. Students were asked to build models within a 12in x 12in x 12in box using three different types of materials - bass wood, museum board, and pine wood. My idea for the line cube was to show a different interpretation of simplicity and complexity. The single line looks simple but actually turns in tangled ways and create different views; while the repeated lines look heavy, but are actually simple repetitions. The plane cube was designed for viewers to explore by turning it around, so that one doesn’t get to see everything inside just from a single view. The drawing on the right was done in gauche and photoshopped showing the unfolded cube. The balance block was supposed to stand on a block with an area of 1x4 square inches. I wanted to combine the concept of line, plane, and cube with the interpretation of blocks. And I also wanted to achieve the illusion of it not being able to balance, while it actually does.

CO-OP WORKS
I’ve learned lots of different things from my two co-ops in MMoser Associates and SFA Architects, and I’ve improved my skills in Sketchup and AutoCAD greatly. During my first co-op in SFA Architects, I spent most of my time drawing in AutoCAD, and I did more modeling and designing in my second co-op in MMoser Associates. The top image on the right page is a render view I designed for the gym of Belle project in Shenzhen using Sketchup, which was approved by the clients. And the bottom image is a perspective view of a canteen on the same floor, which I also modeled in Sketchup.
SFA

These are some work I did during my internship in Benoy, HK. The first image is floor pattern I did in photoshop for a shopping mall. The second image is one of the diagrams I made for a shopping mall layout. I learned a lot about the science behind during the process.

The renderred images I did are changes I made in Photoshop based on their original renderings, such as change of magerials, adding lighting fixtures, adding graphics. I did the entire renderred elevation in Photoshop.
Photoshop
These images are two options I designed for the office reception area for Bose, while I was co-oping in MMoser Associates. With the client’s needs for three different usage of the area - reception seating, experience zone, and mail area; I provided the client 2 different solutions and design styles. I was able to attend the meeting with the client, and made changes according to her opinions.
These are some drawings I did in SFA Architects. The top drawing is for a renovation of a property in downtown Cincinnati, which will beome an office and conference center. I went to the site and measured the existing structure, and designed and modeled it in Revit. The second drawing is an interior construction detail drawing I did in AutoCAD that was represented to the client.

OTHER ART WORKS
Besides my profession, I enjoy doing all kinds of art related works as hobbies. The two images on right are design and renderings I did for a residential project during exchange semester, using Sketchup, Vray and then Photoshop. The following pages consist of a realistic hand drawing I did with marker and color pencil, some sketches, and my photography work.
