LOOKING OUTSIDE

ALMOST TWENTY YEARS AGO, I picked up a surfboard in earnest for the first time.

I’m still not what you’d call an expert, but over the last two decades I’ve had a few amazing rides that have made all the wipeouts worth it. Surfing is an incredible sport and my favorite hobby, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve begun to realize that surfing is more than just a pastime. In fact, surfing has been even more valuable in my life than I ever thought it would be. Every time I paddle out, I learn something new—about myself, about the ocean, about others—and those lessons learned in the water often translate easily to life on dry land. Surfers have a term for the territory beyond the normal zone of a surf break: it’s called outside, and when a big set appears, you’ll hear that word—“Outside!”—travel quickly along the lineup, alerting fellow surfers. An outside set can leave you sitting helpless, as another guy catches the wave you didn’t see coming. It stands to reason, then, that one of the most valuable skills a surfer learns is not about standing up on a wave or mastering the art of a turn, but about understanding the unpredictability of the ocean and being conscious of what’s happening around you. Behavioral science calls it situational awareness. In surf lingo, it’s called looking outside. Some people in our industry have questioned the Modere approach. They’re upset that we refuse to go with the flow and that we’re upsetting the status quo. Well, the reason we’re different is simple: in business, if you’re not looking ahead and around you, you’re going to be unaware of the next big trend. It’s just like surfing—no matter what’s breaking in front of you, you always have to be looking outside, because your success depends on it. We’re different because we’re ahead of the game, poised for success in an industry that’s stuck in the past. Don’t believe me? Wait and see. THE SUNDANCE SEA

Long before recorded history, thousands of years before native tribes called it home and settlers trekked across it in search of fame and fortune, much of the Great Basin between the Sierra Nevada and the Rockies was covered by water. If you were able to travel all the way back to the Jurassic Period, you would find Utah and most of the Midwest submerged beneath a saltwater ocean known to historians as the Sundance Sea. The parts of Utah not underwater resembled the Sahara Desert, sandy and barren. But over millions of years, climate change and a worldwide drop in sea levels eventually caused the Sundance to retreat to the north, replaced by a series of seas, lakes, rivers and swampy marshes that deposited layer after layer of mineralrich sediment on top of the salt formations left behind on the seabed.

ANCIENT MINERAL MASTERPIECE

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s left behind today is the Great Salt Lake, still the largest body of water between the Great Lakes and the Pacific Ocean, and the vast dry plain that once sat beneath the Sundance and other prehistoric seas. Today, residents of Salt Lake City can see evidence of its submarine past, cut into the walls of the Wasatch Range and deposited in the form of gravel benches that rise hundreds of feet above the current shoreline.
