A
convocation is defined as a large formal assembly of people, and the ACD Annual Meeting and Convocation is just that—a time for Fellows to gather to learn together, work together, and welcome new and exceptional colleagues into the Fellowship. It is a time to renew our commitment and remember why Fellowship in the ACD is important. In 1978, Dr. Robert Nelson, the ACD Executive Director, received a resignation letter from a Fellow stating, “For some time now I have procrastinated about the advantages of membership in the College. Frankly, I find none.” His Regent, O.M. Langsjoen, responded with:
Fellowship was never intended to offer any ‘advantages.’ The fact that you are actively involved in the affairs of your constituent society reaffirms the judgement made many years ago by your nominators that you are the type of individual who gives more to the profession of dentistry than he expects to receive in return. Those Fellows and the Board of Regents saw fit to honor you with fellowship in a group of like-minded top drawer professionals for your contributions at that time and for your potential future development. M
y Presidential year passed so quickly. I was installed as President of the College in Houston and met so many wonderful Fellows and leaders of other dental organizations through my travels on behalf of the College throughout 2023. Although this was a great year for the ACD, as the distance from the COVID pandemic has grown and more of us meet in-person more often, a bigger view clearly shows that this has been a difficult year for so many people. As we look to New Orleans for next year, we remember Hurricane Katrina and the devastation and displacement of hundreds of thousands of people in 2005, from which parts of the city are still recovering. Many are still recovering from and affected by the COVID pandemic, the war in Ukraine continues, and the wildfires in Maui cost many lives and livelihoods. And then, two days after our Convocation, when many ACD Fellows were returning home, attending SmileCon, or having fun at Disney, horrific terrorist attacks occurred in Israel. This event was the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. From my personal travels to Jordan, Egypt, and Israel, my heart aches for the people of the Middle East and for all those affected world-wide. In war, in pandemics, in natural disasters, in terrorist attacks, people are displaced and access to care is denied. Medical-dental integration is necessary. As ACD Fellows, we must continue to strive for excellence, exemplify ethics, exercise professionalism, and provide leadership. When times are darkest leadership must shine. It has been and honor and pleasure to serve as your President. If I can ever assist you in the future, please contact me.

The American College of Dentists Fellowship is 8000 strong and all can participate in the mission-based activities through leadership, service, and by supporting the Foundation. As a lasting legacy to the advancement of oral healthcare, please consider an end of year gift as well as naming the ACDF in your estate planning.
ACD Foundation: An Active 2023 The ACD and ACDF have a unique relationship. The Fellowship supports the Foundation, the Foundation supports the mission-based programs of the College, and the College invests in advancing excellence, ethics, professionalism, and leadership in dentistry through unique programming and support of our Fellows. The Foundation is a lever for the Fellowship to support the mission. Our fifth Ethics Summit will be held in September 2024, and is being led by Drs. Toni Roucka and Scott Tomar. Representatives from many healthcare groups will come together to discuss how dentistry might be a more effective partner in overall health. This initiative began in 2022 with a task force culminating in a white paper, Healthcare Integration Through an Ethical Lens, which can be found at www.dentalethics.org/ reports/inter-professionalism/. The 2023 Fellows Forum, The Ethics of Medical-Dental Integration: Starting the Conversation Within the Dental Profession, demonstrated the need to advance this discussion. Panelist Marko Vujicic, the Chief Economist for the ADA, described how dentistry is at a crucial fork in the road. Another mission pillar, leadership, will be enhanced in March 2024. The highly acclaimed SHIFT
(SHapIng the FuTure) leadership program will be directed by ACD Fellow Sreenivas Koka to train Section-based workshop facilitators. Those inspired servant leaders will develop leadership workshops for their Sections in each of our eight Regencies. The new ACDF President, Robert Lamb, has said the Sections are the life blood of the College. Empowering the Section leaders will increase the effectiveness of the Sections. Fellowship: An Opportunity to Do More
W
hile it is an exceptional experience to be part of the ACD Fellowship, there are also personal benefits. While Fellowship is not transactional, it does provide our Fellows opportunities to: Honor the profession’s social contract with those for whom we care; Access advanced education in professional and educational leadership through our strategic partnerships and scholarship opportunities; Work closely with dental students through SPEA, helping to shape the future of the profession; Work closely with colleagues in the American Society for Dental Ethics, and Collaborate on local projects through Section membership that benefit the profession and society. As President Terri Dolan stated in her remarks at the 2023 Annual Meeting, “Your dedication to the excellence of dentistry has not gone unnoticed, and I am proud to welcome you to this esteemed organization.”

Abstract from Healthcare Integration Through an Ethical Lens
O
ral health and overall health are intimately connected, and many emerging public health threats have oral health implications. Collaborative care among healthcare professionals has been demonstrated to improve patient outcomes, and therefore improved healthcare integration is a key focus area of healthcare reform. Yet, the dental care delivery system remains divorced from the rest of the U.S. healthcare system. This paper examines the topic of healthcare integration through the exploration of six Core Values of the American College of Dentists and the ethical obligation to provide evidence-based care. Because integrated healthcare is associated with better patient outcomes than a more siloed approach, the dental profession must act to close the dental–medical divide. To best serve the oral health needs of the public, dentistry may need to be considered a specialty of medicine, and dental students should have the same solid foundation in the basic and clinical sciences as medical students. Educating dental and medical students together would increase the interaction between the professions, support collaborative practice models, and lead to a better understanding of the health issues that patients face. That increased integration would likely lead to better patient outcomes and a healthier population.

Board Meeting Highlights
ACD Board of Regents met for a day and a half directly before the annual meeting of the College.
T
he Board of Regents held their fall meeting on Tuesday, October 2. Among other accomplishments, the strategic plan was approved and is moving forward to publication by the end of 2023. A work plan is being developed by 2024 President Terri Dolan and the Board Committees. Additionally, the Bylaws Committee reviewed their progress on the revision of the ACD bylaws which, once green-lighted by the
Board, will go to the Fellowship for final approval. The Ethics Handbook Revision Team also reviewed their work and are looking forward to publishing the updated handbook in early 2024. The election results for the 2024 Board were reviewed, and the new Regents and Officers were welcomed. For the upcoming election for 2025 Officers and Regents, it was announced that the offices of Treasurer, Vice President, and President Elect will be

Interview with Bruce Kessler: Maker of the Fellowship Pin since 1996 The work of many goes into making the Convocation special. Bruce Kessler is the provider of the pins each Fellow receives at the annual Convocation. Managing Director Suzan Pitman recently interviewed Bruce about his role. How does the pin demonstrate that Fellowship in the ACD is special? I’m pretty sure a particular symbol doesn’t have anything to do with the Fellowship being special. It’s special because of the criteria met for earning the unique, little displayable symbol that can only be earned.
Why are things like the Fellowship pin important? Medals, pins, and plaques have probably been around since the ancient Greeks to reward talent, dedication, and sacrifice. Some people and some achievements are just very deserving of being singled out and it is respectful to identify the deserving few with objects that are visible and enduring.
A month later I tried again. Persistence got me nowhere with Mae. Persuasiveness is not a talent I possess. When I started my business, I knew I would have to make and purvey products better than the competition. I showed Mae I could make a better pin at a savings and eventually she gave in.
What do you love about your job?
Mae Hom, ACD Bookkeeper and Controller for many years.
How long have you been making the Fellowship pins and was the design already in effect? Mae Hom had purchasing responsibility for ACD in 1996 when I knocked on the door. I showed her a better, less expensive example of a pin similar to the Fellowship pin. Cheaper and better made no impression on Mae Hom.
There is a lot of creativity involved in designing and fabricating items that are in every case unique to the client. I’ve met a lot of strangers who have become friends.
How are the pins made? ACD lapel pins are made using the die-struck method. The die-struck method involves employing a hydraulic press that applies 60 tons of pressure per square inch to squeeze a cold, 10k gold piece of metal into a pre-cut negative pattern which has been hand carved into a hardened steel cube by a die cutter. What follows are weeks of additional steps to finish each pin by hand.

Thomas Slack ACD President 1991-1992
Thomas Slack (Colorado) served as ACD president in 1991-1992. A veteran of the US Army and one of several dentists in his family, Dr. Slack was, as are all Fellows, active in organized dentistry and his community. He was also a clinical professor at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry. In his President Elect’s address, he stated the following: I believe in a strong profession supported by an active College — one that is carrying the torch for high ethical standards and quality care. We must be joined in that battle — but we must have an army large enough to fight the battle. You and I need to recognize the numerous dentists who have been overlooked for Fellowship in the College. They also deserve the opportunity to act, through the College, in support of ethics and professionalism.

Please do not misunderstand me. I am not suggesting a membership drive, and this is not a request to increase the numbers of Fellows for the sake of numbers. It is a request that each one of us should fulfill our role as a Fellow in the College and identify qualified and deserving dentists for Fellowship. The seventh objective of the College is “to confer Fellowship in the College on individuals in recognition of meritorious achievement and the potential for contribution in dental science, art, education, literature, human relations and other areas that contribute to human welfare and to give encouragement to them to further the objectives of the College.” To nominate an outstanding colleague for Fellowship, please contact the National Office at office@acd.org or visit the nominations page of our website, www.acd.org/nominations. Regency Breakout Session Offers Guidance on Nominations The Regency Breakout Sessions included an activity and information on writing stronger nominations for new Fellows. Information shared included the difference between the Profile Summary and Nominator Support Statement documents. The Profile Summary serves as a listing of the body of work of the nominee, while the Nominator Support Statement is the nominator’s opportunity to bring those accomplishments to life by describing the value they bring to the profession and will bring to the College. The attendees went through a Mock Credentials Committee exercise that gave insights on the evaluative criteria used by the Committee. Successful nominator support forms demonstrate how the nominee’s accomplishments have brought value to the profession and their communities and will bring value to the College.

The Wisdom of the Bullfrog: Leadership Made Simple (But Not Easy) Dick Jones Indiana Section
A
dmiral William H. McRaven, author of The Wisdom of the Bullfrog, ended his 37-year Navy SEAL career with four stars as Commander of all U.S. Special Operations Forces. After retiring, he became the Chancellor of the University of Texas System. “Bullfrog” is the title given to the active-duty Navy SEAL who has served the longest. This is a treatise on the qualities that separate good from truly great leaders. Each of the eighteen chapters is based upon a motto or saying that inspires and guides. Admiral McRaven illustrates, explains, and applies principles that define excellence in leadership. Some of the quotes on which the chapters are based include:
“Ninety-nine percent of all failures come from people who have a habit of making excuses.” –George Washington Carver “The most tragic thing in the world is a man of genius who is not a man of honor.” –George Bernard Shaw “Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.” –Oprah Winfrey These, along with the other well-chosen quotes included in the book, serve as a launch pad for General McRaven’s hard-earned wisdom and exceptional experience. In his conclusion, Admiral McRaven states, “Those who succeed as leaders have personal qualities that set them above the commonplace. They are honorable and trustworthy, confident yet humble, they have stamina, initiative, and aren’t afraid to take risks.” Admiral McRaven’s inspiring guide to excellent leadership can well be summarized from his subtitle: Leadership made Simple (But Not Easy). ACD Sponsors a Discussion about the Ethics of Medical-Dental Integration
On Saturday, October 14 in Baltimore, Maryland Laura Bishop (Metro Washington) co-presented with Cheryl Austein Casnoff, Managing Director for the Healthcare Payment, Quality & Innovation Division at the MITRE Corporation, a Thought Leader Session entitled Medical-Dental Integration: A Matter of Social Justice at the 25th Annual Conference of the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities. This is part of the College’s ongoing initiative to study and act on medicaldental integration.
In 1866, Dr. John Allen, a dentist in Brooklyn, utilized the principles of the “corpus hippocrateum” from 426 BC—non-maleficence, beneficence, autonomy, juris, and veracity—to create a code of ethics that is the basis for that which we still use today.
The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Such a state is not possible without the inclusion of the mouth. Oral health is essential to physical, mental, and social well-being, but barriers such as a lack of covered services, no integrated electronic health record, no coordination of care and a host of other systemic barriers have perpetuated a divide between the health of the mouth and the rest of the body. As a matter of social justice, more coordination between medicine and dentistry is necessary to ensure better health as defined by WHO.
The greatness of the American College of Dentists is fostered within a culture of sincere dedication to service to others and a cause greater than themselves. We must revere the ACD and its mission, and as a Fellowship never forget that it’s never wrong to do the right thing by doing things right for the right reason and the right time with the right knowledge for those we serve, our patients. Our accomplishments are not just boxes we have checked; they are acknowledgement that our guiding principles have prevailed.

Brett Kessler (Colorado) will assume the ADA presidency in 2024. Kessler served as president of the Colorado Dental Association from 2014-2015 and has represented ADA District 14 since 2019.
Passionately challenging the status quo but staying true to the ADA’s mission and values, Dr. Kessler invited the ADA delegation to “come sit with the changemakers,” encouraging his colleagues to reimagine the ADA. His platform focused on three critical items: advocacy, a dental community of respect, and wellness. A national wellness and leadership speaker, he is also a five-time Ironman triathlete, ultra-marathoner and avid trail runner. In addition to his work as a clinician, he has been involved with volunteer organizations which promote substance abuse advocacy and wellbeing. ACD News | Fall/Winter 2023 | 15
News of Fellows and Sections Pamela Alston (Northern California), At Large Regent, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Dental Association.
Mary McCabe (New England) is the 2023 recipient of the Dr. Steven Brin Physician of the Year Award, bestowed by the Rhode Island Free Clinic. Dr. McCabe serves as the volunteer dental director at this award-winning, nationally recognized clinic that serves low-income, uninsured adults in need of medical and dental care. ACD members from around the country were present at the LSU School of Dentistry celebration honoring its alumnus and incoming NDA President, Marlon Henderson (Louisiana), who was inducted into the ACD this year. Angelo Mariotti (Louisiana), Dean of the LSU SOD did an excellent job organizing the event.
Greg Chadwick (Carolinas) was recently named President of the FDI World Dental Federation. Dr. Chadwick is the Dean at East Carolina School of Dental Medicine and served as President of the ADA from 2001-2002. Donna Klauser (Southern California) was recently interviewed by the California Dental Association regarding a non-profit she founded, ChangetheRX. Dr. Klauser noted that the focus of ChangetheRX evolved from bringing awareness to the problem of fentanyl abuse and encouraging a change in how post-operative medications are prescribed. ChangetheRX is partnering with local government to look for trusted partners in the community to dispense Narcan at no cost and monitor naloxone use outcomes. The fentanyl crisis is a public health emergency that requires a collective effort to combat. Understanding this crisis and the crucial role dentists play in addressing it can protect patients and the community and help mitigate the danger of the opioid epidemic. 16 | ACD News | Fall/Winter 2023

Sheldon Winkler
The University of Buffalo Alumni Association awarded Sheldon Winkler (Arizona) its 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award for the School of Dental Medicine in recognition of his exceptional career accomplishments, community and university service, and research and scholarly activity. Dr. Winkler is Professor Emeritus at Temple University School of Dentistry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he served as Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Prosthodontics and Dean of Research, Advanced Education, and Continuing Education. Dr. Winkler graduated from NYU College of Dentistry. He served in the US Army as dental clinic commander at Schwaebisch Hall, Germany, from 1956 to 1958. In October of 1961 during the Vietnam crisis, he was called back to active duty until his release the following year. He received his advanced certificate in prosthodontics from the State University of New York at Buffalo in May of 1971 while serving as an Associate Professor at the School of Dentistry.
At the 2023 National Dental Association Annual Convention, Past President of the College Steven Chan (Northern California) and Fotini Anagnostopoulos-King (Maryland) presented at the Eddie G. Smith Leadership Institute. Dr. Chan’s presentation centered on lessons from his decades as a leader in organized dentistry: “Organized Dentistry Leadership Journey: Lessons and the Pathway to Overcoming Vicissitudes Victoriously.” Dr. AnagnostopoulosKing’s presentation centered on informed consent: “Dental Ethics, Informed Consent, and DecisionMaking Models.”
Katie Stuchlik (Texas) was presented with the 2023 Rising Star of the Lone Star Award at the Texas Dental Association Annual Session. This award is given to an outstanding new dentist, recognizing their dedication and drive within the field of dentistry. In 2021, Dr. Stuchlik was named to the ADA “10 Under 10” list and was also the Academy of General Dentistry’s 2020 New Dentist of the Year Awardee. She contributes to the Houston community through volunteering with the Junior League of Houston, providing dental services at numerous dentistry outreach programs, and has raised over $10,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association. Rise’ Martin (Texas) received the Gold Medal Award for Distinguished Service from the Texas Dental Association. This is TDA’s highest honor. Dr. Martinez is Past President of the International College of Dentists. 18 | ACD News | Fall/Winter 2023

SPEA Annual Session Caitlyn Kirkpatrick and Sydney Patel
The 2023 SPEA annual conference held in Orlando, Florida, provided a unique opportunity for students from dental colleges spanning Canada and the United States to gather and engage in learning personal and professional skills from experienced dentists, specialists and pharmacists including but not limited to: societal contribution, artificial intelligence, case acceptance regarding ethics, morals, law and justice, pharmacology declassified, personal finance, etc. Knowledge and insight gained from the speakers by attending the conference is encouraged to be shared and applied among the attendees’ respective chapters. Beyond attending the lectures, conference goers network and connect with new people to share experiences, knowledge, feedback, successes and failures as the representatives of their college chapters.

A Successful “Mentorship Program Mixer” Event

Dugoni School of Dentistry On October 28th, the future of dentistry took a significant step forward as the American College of Dentists and the Student Professionalism and Ethics Association held a remarkable “Mentorship Program Mixer” event at the UOP Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry campus in San Francisco. Spearheaded by the SPEA Chapter Presidents Joany Xue from the University of California, San Francisco, Madeline Fong from UOP Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, ACD Northern California Section Chair LaJuan Hall, and ACD Northern California board member Sampada Deshpande, this event was a celebration of mentorship, professionalism, and ethical practice in the field of dentistry.

The convergence of nearly 20 experienced dental professionals gladly offering their guidance and knowledge was much appreciated. These mentors, many of whom hold the distinguished title of Fellows in the American College of Dentists, mingled with over 70 eager dental students from both UOP and UCSF. The ACD and SPEA share a common mission–to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethical practice in the field of dentistry. The ACD and SPEA share a common mission–to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethical practice in the field of dentistry. This event served as a testament to their commitment, providing a platform for mentors to pass on their wisdom and insights to the next generation of dental professionals.
The highlight of the mixer was the presence of guest speaker, Erik Klintmalm (Texas), who serves as a National Co-director of SPEA. Dr. Klintmalm delivered an engaging talk that left attendees energized and inspired. His words challenged the audience to think differently about leadership and their careers in dentistry, setting the tone for the importance of mentorship in their journey. Mentorship is a valuable asset in any profession, and in the dental field, it is no different. This event was designed with a singular purpose–to initiate networking opportunities that will pave the way for valuable mentorship pairings. The organizers expressed their excitement at the opportunity to provide dental students with a chance to learn from experienced practitioners; relationships they hope will extend well into their dental careers.

The event format included a networking lunch, where mentors and mentees had the chance to mingle and get to know each other. It was followed by ice breaker sessions, where mentees had the opportunity to ask questions and seek advice from the mentors at their tables. The interactions were enlightening, as mentors generously shared their stories and meaningful advice, and mentees posed questions that fueled their passion for dentistry. Throughout the event, mentors and mentees exchanged contact information and promised to stay connected. This Mentorship Program Mixer is just the beginning of an annual program that promises to be a valuable resource for students pursuing a career in dentistry. The event was a success, serving as a beacon of hope for the future of dentistry in Northern California and beyond. The collaboration between ACD and SPEA, under the leadership of Dr. LaJuan Hall, and Dr. Sampada Deshpande, Joany Xue, and Madeline Fong have set the stage for a thriving mentorship program that will continue to inspire and empower future dental professionals. In the words of the organizers, this event was created for the students, and it is their presence and enthusiasm that will drive the success of the mentorship program. As the dental community in Northern California looks ahead, they can be confident that the legacy of this Mentorship Program Mixer event will leave a lasting mark on the future of the dental profession. While the cost of operating the College and Foundation have increased dramatically over the last seven years, the College has held steady on dues. In order to continue to move our mission forward, a dues increase is unavoidable. Your continued support and dedication is greatly appreciated! Active Fellow Dues:

These are Fellows who are 70 or under and still working more than 40 hours a month.
RETIRED FELLOWS
These are Fellows who are 70 or under and work less than 40 hours a month. There is a decrease in dues.
LIFE FELLOWS
These are Fellows over the age of 70. Each fall, the National Office automatically converts the membership status of those whose birthday indicates they will be over 70 the following year. There are no dues for our Fellows who are over 70, although the opportunity to pay Section Dues and support your local initiatives is available.
