Nota Bene American Association of Dental Editors & Journalists
Helping dental organizations communicate with their members and publics
That quote, penned by prolific writer Peggy Toney Horton, resonates with me for two reasons. First, I was that kid who couldn’t wait for the onset of a new school year (and, yes, I sat in the front row). But secondly, and now more importantly, October – specifically October 12-13 – is when the AADEJ membership will meet in person for the first time since before COVID! Over the next few weeks you will be receiving several e-blasts and updates letting you know about our plans to make the annual meeting exciting and worthwhile. This includes our lineup of stellar continuing education courses and presenters. And let’s not forget the ability to network, reconnect with old colleagues, and make new friends. If you haven’t done so already, you can still register for the AADEJ Annual Session. Just go to AADEJ.org and scroll down to “Register” for the Annual Meeting, or go directly to the website link, https://acd.memberclicks.net/ aadej2022#!/ or use the QR code at the bottom. Cost for members if $495*, which includes two days of CE, luncheons and local guest speaker, and participation in the ACD reception Wednesday evening. (*$695 for non-members, which includes one year’s AADEJ membership) Special gratitude to the members of the AADEJ Program Committee: Richard Roadcap, chair; Kathy Gibson; Mary Ellen Leskowitz; Ms. Denise Maihofer; Mali Schantz-Feld; Joanna Schreiber, and AADEJ President Stuart Segelnick.
A Voice Silenced, But Not Forgotten The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) announced the passing on August 13 of its longtime editor and AADEJ member, Roger Winland, DDS, MS, MAGD, who died on Saturday, Aug. 13. Winland, a general dentist from Athens, Ohio, had been AGD editor for 24 years until his retirement in 2020, and, before that, served as editor of the Ohio AGD newsletter, The Family Dentist, for 12 years. Most recently, Dr. Winland was the recipient of the Distinguished Dental Editor Award, presented by AADEJ and the ADA Council on Communications, in recognition of his superior leadership and example in bringing credit to the profession through exceptional journalism. According to the AGD website, “during his tenure as editor, Dr.Winland reviewed thousands of technical, clinical and research reports and findings, as well as case reports and columns that ran in AGD’s peer-reviewed journal, General Dentistry. He also guided the content of AGD Impact, striving to make sure AGD published news and stories relevant to the profession. He was committed to editorial excellence in AGD publications and other news sources and was a vibrant leader of the AGD Communications Council.” Dr. Winland was in private practice in Athens, Ohio. He is survived by his wife Debra, children and grandchildren. His full obituary is here: https://legcy.co/3wxakWt
CE Opportunity: AADEJ at the GNYDM Last year, a survey sponsored by BusinessWire found that 46% of journalists see a lack of trust in the news as the biggest challenge in modern journalism. This statistic holds true throughout the broad spectrum of media vehicles and audiences, which means, of course, that this affects the viability and perceived trustworthiness of dental editors and journalists. On Friday, November 25, AADEJ will sponsor Misinformation and Disinformation in Communication at the Greater New York Dental Meeting. This session has been designed to help dental editors and journalists continue to maintain open communications systems while promoting ethical and professional standards and literacy in order to build and maintain reader trust and correct fake news. AADEJ has lined up an all-star lineup of speakers: Jaci Clement, CEO and Executive Director, Fair Media Council ( https://www.fairmediacouncil.org/ ) Adam Marcus, co-founder of Retraction Watch (retractionwatch.com) and the Center for Scientific Integrity, and Editorial Director, Medscape (www.medscape.com) Dr. Richard Niederman, periodontist and expert in evidencebased medicine and medical informatics, tenured professor of epidemiology and health promotion, NYU College of Dentistry. Check aadej.org in the next few weeks for registration information for Misinformation and Disinformation in Communication.
