New York Section Update
New York Section Update
Kevin Henner and I presented the ADA’s Code of Ethics at the Greater New York Dental Meeting on November 26th. We had an engaging audience and look forward to next year.
This past September, we had our fall Board meeting which was followed by a Section meeting. Nanette Elster, the Communications Director for the ACD, spoke on Dental Ethics & Social Media. She gave an informative and eye-opening presentation.
I also had the opportunity to speak on behalf of the ACD NY Section to the SPEA students at Columbia this past October. Our own Julie Connolly is the faculty advisor for the Columbia SPEA chapter. Dedicated and devoted to her students, we thank her for her commitment in helping guide our future leaders.
My appreciation to Yakir Arteaga as past chair of the NY Section. He kept us all together during Covid these past 3 years. Thank you for your leadership. Kudos to Yakir!
Sincerely, Guenter Jonke NY Section chair

Dear Regency One Fellows, Our section has had a busy and productive year. Listed below are the highlight for 2022:
1. Our section achieved model section status. Special thanks go to our previous chairmen Dr. Jay Skolnick, Dr. Larry Volland and our hard-working Fellows that made it possible.
2. At the annual awards banquet held on May 4th, for the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, Evan J. Conley received the American College of Dentists Award. This award, known as “The Outstanding Student Leader Award”, is awarded annually to a graduating senior.

4. The WNY Section held its annual meeting August 27th at the Roycroft Inn located in the historic Village of East Aurora. The well attended meeting capped off a weekend of fun and learning. The highlight of the weekend was a docent led tour of the Roycroft Museum and Campus.
5. I had the privilege of attending our annual ACD meeting held in Houston October 12-13, as our section’s representative. I attended all the events and seminars. At that meeting we had 2 new Fellows inducted, they were Dr. Erin Bates and Dr. Stacy Hoffman. We also have four nominees

Quebec Section Report
I – ACD Houston Annual Meeting and Convocation, October 2022
The Quebec Section Executive Committee’s members joined me in forwarding to Regent I, Fellow Paulka Freidman, our regrets for not attending the recent Houston live ACD Annual Meeting and Convocation. Quebec Section’s funding restrictions limit related travel and attendance costs for its representatives. In addition, its two nominated Fellows for this year, Drs. Jocelyne Feine and Mario Auger, have chosen to postpone their respective ACD Convocation ceremony.
II - Quebec Section’s ongoing efforts to network with dental communities
As Section Chair, I am pleased to report that a second half-day ACD sponsored Ethics in Dentistry Symposium was presented on May 30th, during the Journées dentaires internationales du Québec (JDIQ) convention 2022 in Montreal last May. Fellow Robert Dorion presided this Ethics Symposium program. These two ACD sponsored symposium presentations were as follows:
- Interactive Resolution of an Ethical Situation in Dental Practice Ms. Carole Chauvin, Ms. Sophie Gagnon, and Groupe Philia
- Ethical Questions and Solutions Regarding Dental Practice-Based
III – Quebec Section Annual Meeting and Herb Caplan Dinner 2022
(Mont-Stephen Hotel, Montreal, Qc)
This first live Section activity, since the start of 2020, was held on June 1st at the Mont-Stephen Hotel in Montreal with a limited number of Fellows due to the state of the pandemic last Spring. Nevertheless, our Section had a wonderful gathering in the presence of President Richard Jones who delivered a compelling message to our Fellows. Our Guest presentation by Me Erwan Jonchères titled “Journey from the Origins of Crypto to Decentralized Science” addressed contemporary issues. A slate of officers was voted by Fellow attendees.
IV – ACD Board Meeting invitation to Canadian Dental Research Institute (CDRI)
ACD Board members hosted an online meeting invitation to the CDRI on August 1st. In preparation for this meeting, CDRI’s CEO Dr. Hubert Gaucher, proceeded to forward a working document Agenda in order to facilitate a productive dialogue regarding the topic of Digital Dental Workflows (DDW). In addition, CDRI’s Accredited Digital Dental Prescription, ADDRx, and Spring Update 2022 mentioning the numerous benefits and impacts of AI driven Practice Based Research/ Learning were distributed to all Board members. Fruitful exchanges of
ideas/suggestions occurred with the understanding that ACD is actively involved with assessing AI’s role in structuring Practice Based Research/ Learning as well as its potential impact on ACD’s various Task Forces.
V – Regency I, new leadership
On the eve of the recent ACD Houston Meeting, I forwarded, on behalf of all our Section’s Fellows, our best wishes to Regent Paula Friedman for a very productive and pleasant meeting as well as all the best in her future projects as she completes her ACD Regent I leadership. Our warm thanks for her very helpful numerous interventions on behalf of our Section and her constant concern for ACD affairs in “La Belle Province”.
We therefore welcome newly elected Regent I, Fellow Dr. Julie Connolly, and wish her all the best in her ACD leadership position. Quebec Section Fellows will have the opportunity of meeting our new Regent at the coming Annual Meeting and Herb Caplan dinner on May 31st, 2023.
VI – Student Professional Ethics Association in Dentistry (SPEA)
The Quebec Section Executive Committee continues its collaboration with SPEA Canada representatives and is actively seeking the collaboration of Fellows wishing to assist in establishing SPEA Chapters in Quebec’s three Dental Faculties. For your information here is a link detailing how these Chapters can be established, SPEA Start-Up Kit: ACD specific funds can be made available to support SPEA initiatives in Quebec.

Hudson-Mohawk Section Report
This year’s Hudson Mohawk Section’s annual summer event included dinner at the Historic Gideon Putnam Hotel followed by the Sweeney Todd Opera at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center on June 30, 2022. It was such a beautiful evening that we walked the short distance from dinner to SPAC. We were honored to have ACD President Richard Jones and Regent 1 Paula Friedman in attendance. It was the fir Opera for several attendees.
Our Fall meeting was arranged by Fellow Andrew Wood. Dr. Wood had requested that we have an event at his beloved Albany Country Club prior to the pandemic shutdown. Andy was thrilled that our Fellows would be enjoying an evening meeting at his golf club. Unfortunately Andy passed before the meeting. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Albany Country Club and were pleased to have former Congressman and current Siena College President, Chris Gibson address our group. President Gibson’s address and Q& A captivated the Fellows and spouses in attendance.
The GPR at Ellis Medicine which the Section supported has been discontinued. We continue to support the Hudson Valley Community College Dental Hygiene program. At the Pinning Ceremony in April, a rising Senior was presented with the Dr. Gerard Ripp Award. At the Capitol District Symposium in Albany the first year dental hygiene students make poster presentations which the Fellows evaluate and present student awards.

Going forward, we most likely will have a blend of in-person and electronic meetings. Many thanks are extended to Dr. Julie Connolly for attending several of our meetings and for her provision of valuable input.

REGENCY 1 REGENT TRANSITION
Houston was the setting to witness a beautiful transition of the Regent-Regency 1 gavel, or more appropriately, the baton. It was a privilege to be present to honor and observe Paula K. Friedman complete the duties of her exemplary four-year term, and an equal honor to embrace and welcome our new Regent, Dr. Julie A. Connolly. By any standard, we are the most fortunate recipients of superlative leadership. We go from the Best to the Best, a win-win. Congratulations are extended to both Dr. Friedman and Dr. Connolly.
ACD-NE AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
Our Ambassador Program continues to identify highly qualified colleagues for possible nomination to ACD Fellowship. The NE Section applauds the following Fellows that have accepted this responsibility from their state: Kevin Drew Wilson; Marian A. Royer; Stephen Ura; Debra Pan; and Maria Smith. Dr. Pan was outstanding in her nomination of many of her colleagues from the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. This enthusiastic cohort from BU was present in full force in Houston to accept Fellowship and to honor of Paula K. Friedman, a mentor to each.

YANKEE DENTAL CONGRESS 2023
Yankee 2023 is host to our ACD-NE Annual Meeting. We look forward to welcoming you to Boston. Here are some highlights of our plans:
THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 2023
8:00–11:00 AM
Providing very high-quality meaningful continuing education to our Fellows and the dental community at-large is a core tenant of our strategic plan and is one of the accomplishments that enhances our status as a Model Section. Our continuing education course at Yankee Dental Congress 2023 will be on Thursday morning, January 26 at 8:00am. To enroll, locate in the schedule: Course 113TLMultidisciplinary Treatment Planning in Recognizing and Resolving Ethical Issues. Drs. Howard Hill, Roger Wise, and Julie Connolly (moderator) are widely recognized and respected for providing pathways to the resolution of complex clinical issues. The doctors are joined in this course by attorney Vincent Dunn, J.D. to provide legal perspective to the problems presented to the audience.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 2023:
A dinner by invitation will be held Friday evening at a famous Boston restaurant, Davio’s. Section Chairs will receive an invitation to attend. This will be the first opportunity to dine together in Boston since the 100th Anniversary Celebration at the Copley Fairmont, the original site of the origination of the American College of Dentists.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 2023 7:30-11:30AM
Leadership Breakfast and Leadership Summit (invitation). Dr. Connolly will lead this summit, with the additional attendance of Dr. Lamb, and Dr. Klintbaum (SPEA ED). Each Section Chair will be encouraged to provide a brief report of section activities. This is a think-tank to share issues, visions, and the present and future health of ACD Regency 1. This is also an opportunity to hear from SPEA leaders from the school chapters to learn from them what they perceive as most important.
12:00-2:00PM
ACD-NE Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon. Lighthouse Restaurant at the Seaport. Please inform me of your plans to attend so that I can recognize you and your section.
Also, please take my number down (401) 767-6605 so that I can attend to your needs, questions, or provide you a ride from here-to-there.
ACD-NE SECTION SUCCESSION PLANNING
An Important part of strategic planning is to give serious consideration to and recognition of the ongoing importance to foster a strong board transition of leadership. At the Saturday Annual Meeting and Award Luncheon at Yankee 2023, the position of Chair will transfer from Bob Bartro to Dr. Maria Smith (Dr. Smith has a long history of leadership, including past AGD President); Vice Chair will be transferred from Dr. Steven Rubin to Dr. Janis Moriarty (Janis’ accomplishments are well known); and Editor will transfer from
Dr. Steven Rubin to Dr. Celeste Kong (the ACD-NE Newsletter has received national awards, and a component of our position as a Model Section. Dr. Kong comes in with impeccable credentials and will be a marvelous editor). The positions of Secretary, Treasurer remain unchanged with Secretary, Marian Royer; and Treasurer, Anthony Storace. To take this team ‘over-the-moon’, Drs. Paula Friedman, Lonnie Norris, and Steven Rubin have accepted and are eager to remain on the Board. They will provide ongoing exceptional leadership, guidance, and mentorship.
FUTURE CONTINUING EDUCATION
Planning for additional quality education resources include the possibility of once again hosting course at the Straumann Center in Andover, MA and is currently in the planning and investigatory stages. An objective of the section is to determine excellent speakers and a variety of appropriate subjects that emphasize the four pillars of the American College of Dentists and would be of benefit to Fellows and other colleagues.
In closing, I am most thankful for the opportunity to have met each of you either in-person, virtually, or on the telephone. It gives me great comfort to know that ACD Regency 1 is in the best possible hands.
Best wishes to you all, and Kind Regards,
Bob Bartro, DDS Chair ACD-NE
