Recognizing the benefits of having a historic downtown campus and a plantation campus just 17 miles away on the Intracoastal Waterway and the Stono River, President P. George Benson laid out a vision for Dixie Plantation as an environmental sciences and sustainability campus. But it is his hope that Dixie will be heavily used by students and faculty from all disciplines.

College of Charleston

To our College of Charleston Community:

I

’m honored to provide to you the College of Charleston 2013 Donor Report. Today, the College is doing very well. We are once again nationally ranked, and we continue to make progress on our goals and to improve the quality of the academic experience for our students. Our financial position remains strong and is getting better every day thanks to your support. We have certainly come a long way since our founding in 1770 and my arrival in February 2007. Since 2007, we have completed important facility projects, established new academic programs, and set records in student applications and the number of students studying abroad. Further, while navigating through an unprecedented economic recession, we more than doubled private giving to the College. In 2013, we began conference play in the Colonial Athletic Association. Our move to the Colonial is bringing greater national exposure to the College and developing new athletics, academic and professional development opportunities for our entire campus community. In addition, our move is generating more interest from prospective students and their families, and from employers up and down the East Coast. All of this helps increase the value of every College of Charleston degree – past, present and future. Clearly there has been much to celebrate over the past seven years, and we owe much of that to you. Through your faithful support and collaboration — your advocacy, your financial contributions and your generous gifts of self — we have achieved so much. Every day we see the impact of your gifts across our campus, from scholarships to the continued growth of our Jewish Studies Program to exciting new academic initiatives in our School of Business and School of Sciences and Mathematics. You truly are making a difference in the lives of our faculty, staff and students. You can read more about your positive impact on our campus community on the following pages.

College of Charleston

Over the past year, alumni, faculty, staff, friends, businesses, and foundations continued to make the College one of their top philanthropic priorities. In 2013, total giving reached $14.6 million. Of the $14.6 million in new commitments, $2.5 million was raised through our 13 annual giving funds, including significant increases in student giving with the establishment of a new student philanthropy group called Committed to Charleston. We also saw a 130% increase in online donations with the launch of new giving and alumni websites. This unprecedented level of engagement from you is evidence of our growing culture of philanthropy. The development of that culture is without question the most important goal of our current comprehensive fundraising campaign. To date, through the quiet phase of the College’s Comprehensive Campaign, we have raised more than $58 million toward our five strategic campus-wide priorities: scholarships, world-class faculty, distinctive academic and campus-life programs, modern learning and research spaces, and our annual giving programs. I am confident that with your continued generosity and advocacy we will well surpass $100 million before the public launch of the campaign this fall. I am extremely grateful and proud to have worked with you to position the College of Charleston as a distinguished and distinctive national liberal arts and sciences university with a global reach. Thank you for your support and generosity and for allowing us to be diligent stewards of your philanthropy. Sincerely,

P. George Benson President

by the numbers In 2013, donors made the College of Charleston a philanthropic priority in a number of ways. South Carolina Historical Society archives coming to Addlestone Library To further strengthen the relationship between the S.C. Historical Society and the College’s Addlestone Library, the society pledged $500,000 in 2013 to support modifications that will accommodate the housing of the society’s materials, exhibitions and personnel costs to manage the sizeable collection. The society is the state’s oldest and largest private repository of books, letters, journals, maps, drawings and photographs about South Carolina history. In 2015, the society plans to transfer its holdings to the College.

“The society is truly ‘the mother of all archives’ in South Carolina. Students will have access to an unparalleled trove of primary research sources with this partnership.” – Harlan Greene 1974, Director of Special Collections

THE Coca-Cola Foundation fuels First Generation Scholars The College of Charleston received a $100,000 grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation to establish the Coca-Cola First Generation Scholars Program. It is the first scholarship program devoted to ensuring access for highly qualified first-generation students at the College. Five South Carolina students receive $5,000 per year for four years to assist with tuition and fees. They will also fulfill a contract committing them to frequent financial and career workshops, academic support services, civic engagement and cultural development – all to achieve the ultimate goal: graduation.

“These scholarships provide life-changing experiences for our students. We are grateful to The Coca-Cola Foundation for their partnership. Their generosity gave five motivated and talented students the opportunity to realize their educational and career goals.” – Provost George Hynd College of Charleston

Lindner Family Supports Annual Giving and Communication Scholarships When you have confidence, it shows. It’s written all over you. You communicate it through your attitude, your words and your actions. And – with gifts totaling more than $1 million since 2008 – Craig and Frances Lindner communicate their confidence in the College, its faculty and its students loud and clear. The Lindners’ confidence stems from the experience their daughter, Christine Lindner 2012, had as a communication major at the College – and it’s for this reason they support the Parents’ Fund and also created the Lindner Communication Scholarships.

Tri-County Cradle to Career finds home at College: Local philanthropist and CEO of The InterTech Group Anita Zucker inspired the Tri-County Cradle to Career Collaborative (TCCC), a community-wide effort focused on shepherding children from birth to a living-wage career in the Lowcountry. The unique collaboration includes participation from businesses, public schools, higher education institutions, health care organizations, CEOs and philanthropists. The College of Charleston serves as TCCC’s short-term home until it becomes an independent nonprofit.

Steve 1989 and Emily Swanson 1989 and Gus 1975 and Trisha Gustafson 1972 (LEFT) enjoy the fall donor recognition event, which celebrated computer science student and faculty research, innovation and discovery.

Live Oak Society Taking its name from the majestic live oak trees that make the College’s campus so distinct, the Live Oak Society recognizes our most loyal donors (those who give consistently for five years or more and provide the roots of the College’s philanthropic foundation). Live Oak Society donors are leaders in making the College of Charleston a priority year after year, and their generosity continues to advance the mission of the College. College of Charleston

Alumni Eric and Lee Cox give back: Eric 1993 and Lee 1996 Cox love the College. They want future students to have the same great, life-shaping experiences they did, so they decided their legacy at the College would support the School of Business. Rather than choose between their family OR the College, they decided on a meaningful gift in their estate to provide for both their family AND the College.

Newbern Archaeology Fund Launches Careers: The T. Miles Newbern Endowed Archaeology Support Fund was set up in memory of T. Miles Newbern 2011 by his parents to pay tribute to his passion for the College of Charleston and the history of the Lowcountry. “THE FUND helped me launch my career as a professional archaeologist. The funding allowed me to work with a dedicated group of archaeology students to excavate a slave settlement at Dixie Plantation to gather data for my MAsters, and I was even able to present preliminary results of the excavation at the Society for American Archaeology meetings in April in Hawaii.” – Eva Falls 2011

tribute

Gifts received In memory (honored individual in bold)

Sam and Regina Greene celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1989. A year later, Regina passed away; and in 2013, Sam died. Wanting to honor their adopted home of Charleston, the Greenes made a bequest of $500,000 to the College.

In Tribute Thank you to our donors who made gifts to the College in 2013 in memory or in honor of the following special people who made a difference in their lives and in the life of the community. We work diligently to make the list of tribute gifts as complete and accurate as possible. If we have overlooked anyone or if there is an error, please allow us to correct our records by contacting Carin Jorgensen at 843.953.5859 or jorgensencl@cofc.edu. 34 2013 DONOR REPORT
