COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON

TO OUR COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON COMMUNITY: 2014 marked a year of transition and continued progress for the College. In July, I became the 22nd President of the College of Charleston and the third alumnus to lead our institution in College history. I was, and still am, honored and humbled to return to my alma mater to serve our wonderful students, faculty, staff and alumni. I look forward to further getting to know you, learning your personal stories, and working together toward our shared future. In addition, on November 1, we publically launched BOUNDLESS: The Campaign for the College of Charleston. The BOUNDLESS campaign is our institution’s most ambitious philanthropic effort to date, with goals of exceeding $125 million and engaging our entire College community by June 2016. Through BOUNDLESS, we celebrate the power of a College of Charleston education, write the next chapter in our history and build an ever-stronger future for the countless ensuing generations of students. We’ve made much headway on our campaign goals, and we owe much of that success and the success of this pivotal, transitional year to you, our donors. Your areas of interest are as varied as the academic programs we offer. As such, your giving continues to enable opportunity for our entire campus community, from scholarships to improvements in our infrastructure and programmatic support to investments in cultural and scholarly events. You’ll find examples of the impact of your philanthropy on the subsequent pages of this report. As philanthropy continues to be embraced on our campus, we are seeing significant levels of engagement among our donors and supporters. In 2014, total giving reached $12.2 million from more than 6,900 donors. Of the $12.2 million, $2.3 million was raised through our 13 annual giving funds, including significant increases in alumni and parent giving. These totals are exactly what we want to see as we advance our BOUNDLESS campaign.

As we look forward to the College’s next era of distinction, it is evident that our institution will continue to empower students, enhance our community and explore limitless opportunities. This positive outlook of the future is strongly felt, in no small part, because of the depth of generosity and commitment from all of you. Since I have stepped foot back on campus, I’ve learned much from you and have been inspired by your engagement and excitement for our future. Whether I was meeting one-on-one with philanthropic leaders or speaking to various campus constituencies or participating in the many campaign video screenings and events, I felt your passion for our institution. It is important to me that you believe in our vision: to be relevant to the needs of students and the business community and to build a campus community where accessibility, affordability and inclusivity are embraced as part of our institutional culture. I look forward to working with all of you to turn our vision into reality. Your support through generous financial gifts and countless hours of volunteer time are vital to our continued success. I offer my thanks to you for all you do for the College of Charleston. We are truly blessed by your commitment and loyalty. Sincerely,

GLENN F. MCCONNELL 1969, PRESIDENT

Although they never attended the College, Jean and Tap Johnson are Cougars through and through. Both have served in numerous leadership roles on campus, including the Foundation Board of Directors, Cougar Club Board of Directors, School of Business Board of Governors and School of the Arts Advisory Council. They often show their Cougar pride at various student performances and athletic events, namely basketball, and by lending their professional expertise to students as guest lecturers.

The Johnsons’ passion for helping students excel fueled their latest major commitments that will impact students across campus, particularly in the School of the Arts; School of Education, Health, and Human Performance; School of Business; and Athletics Department. A majority of their commitment of more than $1 million is designated to the School of the Arts for theatre and dance scholarships and a study abroad fund.

Ketner Scholarships Inspire Students to Become Agents of Change A unique scholarship program at the College of Charleston is helping a group of high-achieving young women develop leadership skills and advocate for important community causes and social issues. Established in 1990 by businesswoman, community leader and philanthropist Linda Ketner, the Ketner Emerging Leaders Scholarships provide financial assistance to students interested in women’s and gender studies as well as social justice, public service and civic leadership. In 2014, twelve young women were awarded the Ketner Emerging Leader Scholarships.

“Good ideas really are ‘a dime a dozen.’ Much more rare and of value are individuals who take action to implement good ideas. My hope is that the scholarships reward and encourage students who think deeply, think long term,

Daimler Vans Scholars Program Advances Supply Chain Management and Finance Students In April, Daimler Vans Manufacturing LLC created the Daimler Vans Scholars Program with a $163,000 pledge to help support highly motivated students who are preparing for careers in supply chain management or finance. Daimler CEO Marco Wirtz, a member of the School of Business Board of Governors, was instrumental in designing the program and advocating for Daimler’s generous commitment.

“The School of Business is a valuable source of talent for us in the areas of supply chain management and finance. The faculty is closely aligned with the business community and has designed the academic programs to be rigorous and relevant to the needs of the job market.” -Marco Wirtz (pictured left with senior Nicole Watches)

Creating Opportunity Where There Was None Chanele Jackson 1987 didn’t think she’d be able to finish her degree. The single mother of three was facing very challenging personal circumstances. But everything changed when she received a scholarship for tuition and books and her children received a tuition waiver at N.E. Miles Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) on campus. Jackson, now a banking executive with Wells Fargo in Charlotte, N.C., has given to the College of Charleston and ECDC consistently for 15 years. Most recently, she created a planned gift in her estate to be used toward ECDC tuition for a child of a deserving single mother. “I’m able to do so much more because I got that liberal arts education. I know how to think. I know how to research, to explore. I learned to ask questions. I learned to never give up,” says Jackson, who maintains that it is the responsibility of all alumni to give back to their alma mater. “The College exists because of us. It is so much a part of our story, we need to help tell its story.”

Internationally Renowned Rosenthall Judaica Collection Digitized Graciously donated by Rabbi Rosenthall’s widow, Irene, in 2009, this internationally important collection of fine art prints, topical files, sermons, printed materials, artifacts and other historical papers form the William A. Rosenthall papers and the William A. Rosenthall Judaica collection. The materials document the Jewish people: their lives, history, religious ceremonies, dress and customs. In 2014, the project team, consisting of Special Collections staff, archivists, archival assistants, consulting scholars and student volunteers and interns, completed processing the rabbi’s papers and began digitizing individual items from his vast collection of Judaica. As of March 1, 2015, finding aids are available through the College of Charleston Libraries catalog and selected scans of Rosenthall’s Judaica images will be added to the Lowcountry Digital Library.

Dean’s Excellence Fund Sends Graduate Students Abroad Gifts to the Dean’s Excellence Fund are the ultimate vote of confidence in everything the Graduate School of the University of Charleston, South Carolina, stands for and everything it will become. It provides funding for graduate fellowships, minority student support, research funding and new academic experiences. In 2014, gifts by Dianne and John Culhane enabled 11 students to conduct and present research abroad at international conferences and venues. For example, marine biology students Hayley DeHart Townsend (pictured above) and Drew Duckett were able to take a summer course in conservation genetics offered through the Organization of Tropical Studies in Costa Rica.

Young Alumna Defines the Fine Art of Giving Lisa Decker Roy returned to the College for a second degree in arts management in 2009. The School of the Arts (SOTA) gave her a sense of belonging that she’d been seeking, both academically and in a familial way. SOTA became a second home on late nights, an endless source of career counseling, and provided creative energy unmatched anywhere. This year, Roy pledged $100,000 over five years to support the School of the Arts Dean’s Excellence Fund and the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art.

“For nearly a decade, the School of the Arts played home to endless inspirations and formative partnerships for me, honing my skills as an adult and a career woman. As an alumna, I was poised to act, to give back and thank the College and SOTA for its unmeasured generosity, which was paramount in developing who I am today.”

In His Own Words: Josh Hall 2014 The Call Me MISTER (Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) Program was more than just a program for me - it was a chance to grow into an educator and a better person. When I teach, my students at Flowertown Elementary in Summerville, S.C. see all the mentors I had, because I am a reflection of them. That is why Call Me MISTER is so special. We all come from different places, we all have our own reasons for teaching, but what we all have in common is being mentored by upstanding people. Now it’s our turn to give back and change the world, one student at a time.

2014 Huge Scholar Heading to U.S. Embassy in Estonia Zach Sturman, a sophomore from South Florida, knows firsthand the advantages of scholarships. An Honors College student and William Aiken Fellow, Sturman was also selected to be one of four inaugural Huge Scholars at the College. Beyond receiving full scholarships to attend the College, Huge Scholars are also provided with specialized mentoring and the means to engage in summer study abroad trips. This past summer Sturman traveled to Cuba. This summer, he will enjoy a much different international locale. The intrepid Sturman is heading to Estonia’s capital of Tallinn, where he will work as a U.S. Department of State intern in the U.S. Embassy. “The Huges are some of the most selfless and generous people I’ve ever met in my whole life,” says Sturman.

(Recognizing Intelligence, Strength and Engagement) are the characteristics and qualities recipients will be expected to possess and exhibit. The first R.I.S.E. scholarship recipient will be announced in fall 2015. Sara is an attorney who serves on the Honors College Advisory Board. Ben is a portfolio manager for Tower Research Capital.

Karesh Family Supports Vital Community Outreach Programs Stanley and Charlot Karesh’s daughters, Fern Karesh Hurst, Jane Karesh and Gail Karesh Kassan, with her husband, Dr. Stuart Kassan, have established the Stanley and Charlot Karesh Family Fund to provide support for Jewish Studies Program activities, including the Three Rabbi Panel and other strategic community outreach initiatives. Stanley and Charlot Karesh have been pillars of the Charleston Jewish community and the community at large. In 2012, Stanley passed away, and Charlot has continued the Karesh legacy of supporting and promoting Jewish causes and education. Stanley was the first – and for many years, the only – life member of the Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program Advisory Board. The lobby in the 1960 Jewish Studies Center is named in honor of Stanley and Charlot.

Google Invests in Computer Science Education for Middle School Students The School of Sciences and Mathematics received a $100,000 grant from the Google Data Centers Grants Fund of the Tides Foundation to provide funding for the pilot program Scratching the Surface. Scratching the Surface is designed to leverage the success of Google’s Computer Science First Program and the teacher education expertise of the Lowcountry Hall of Science and Math, which serves as a critical bridge between the College’s science and math faculty and regional K-12 educators. The long-term goal of the program is to bring CS education to over 8,400 middle school children by the year 2018, with a sustainable annual reach of 2,250 middle school students per year.

Desplaces (pictured left) is an assistant professor of global commerce in the School of Business and the inaugural recipient of the Howard F. Rudd, Jr. Award, established by Anita Zucker and Justin McLain 1998. Desplaces used the $10,000 award to design a one-day workshop to help start-ups or growing businesses discover their leadership style, how people perceive them and, more importantly, help CEOs develop the toolkit that would allow them to best manage internal relationships. Desplaces’ goal is to become a resource for Charleston’s growing community of entrepreneurs.

Building a Better Tomorrow H. Chapman (Chappy) McKay’s leadership qualities began at the College of Charleston. After graduating in 1986, McKay dove head first into the world of business, rising in rank from director of business development to vice president and partner of Trident Construction Company. Chappy has been an active volunteer with the Chamber of Commerce, Alumni Association Board, the College of Charleston Foundation Board and has served as chair of the College of Charleston Friends of the Library. In October, McKay worked with his employer to initiate the Trident Construction Alumni Scholarship, which will provide essential financial assistance to exemplary College of Charleston seniors and graduate students – a segment of students who have not had an abundance of scholarships available to them. The first recipient will be selected in fall 2015.

Paying It Forward For Stephanie Rhodes 2013, the Duetscher Bruderliche-Bund and Barkley Family Fund scholarships helped her embark on a life-changing journey that included summer internships and a language immersion program in Germany. Upon graduation, Stephanie’s contacts in the German business community led to her first job with IFA Rotorion – North America LLC, an automotive parts supplier headquartered in Germany. She is paying it forward by supporting the College annually through the LCWA Dean’s Excellence Fund, College of Charleston Fund and other areas.

“My own experiences abroad were such an essential part of my academic and personal growth during my time at the College that I believe all students should have the opportunity to experience life in another country, even if their career ambitions are not internationally focused.” -Stephanie Rhodes, annual donor

Audubon’s First Edition of Birds Comes Home to Addlestone Library’s Special Collections There is a great tradition of distinguished Charlestonians giving of themselves to support libraries at the College. In January, George W. Williams approached the Special Collections’ desk with a modest sack. Inside it was a treasure: John James Audubon’s Octavo First Edition of Birds of America with 500 hand-colored lithograph plates. The rare book had been a significant omission in Addlestone Library’s exemplary collection of Audubon’s works. Mr. Williams was the third generation to own the volumes, and the books contain his father’s and grandfather’s signatures in them. Mr. Williams felt strongly that the volumes stay in Charleston where they will be conserved, preserved, studied and admired for generations. DONOR REPORT 2014 13

eTrac Gift Gets Students Out to Sea eTrac Inc., a leading business in the marine survey industry, established a program support fund for the BEAMS Program in the School of Sciences and Mathematics, so that students enrolled in the program get additional hands-on experiential learning opportunities. These opportunities include a day of data acquisition on the eTrac vessel S/V Pulse, mapping a portion of the San Francisco Bay, and attending the American Geophysical Union annual meeting. The BEnthic Acoustic Mapping and Survey (BEAMS) Program is designed to address the need for qualified ocean surveyors to support the expanding academic opportunities and job market in seafloor mapping, habitat characterization, hydrography and marine geophysics research.

“This program has led to a nearly 100% success rate for post graduates seeking employment or graduate school opportunities in the area of marine survey, providing field experience to best compete in today’s workforce.” -Leslie Sautter, BEAMS program director

Boundless Opportunity R. Keith Sauls 1990 is a veteran of Mt. Kilamanjaro, and he’s made the hike a family affair. After Sauls summited himself in 2006, his sister reached the top with his son in 2012. This past summer, Sauls climbed atop Mt. Kilimanjaro with his daughter. Also in tow on Sauls’ latest trip: a CofC flag. Upon reaching the top this past time around, Sauls let the College flag fly. The symbolism to him was obvious: With the College of Charleston, you can reach great heights. This year, Keith Sauls initiated the new Boundless Opportunity Scholarship with an endowment and further pledged a $1 million gift to the scholarship through his estate. Such generosity ensures that the College can target unique high school students and competitively recruit a diverse and intellectually impressive student body.

Hills Support Senior Studio Arts Students Since the opening of the Marion and Wayland H. Cato, Jr. Center for the Arts in 2009, the Hill Gallery has evolved from an exhibition space into a classroom and laboratory for studio arts majors to exhibit during their senior year as part of the ARTS 418 capstone course. The Hill Gallery and ARTS 418 are also considered model curriculum assessment tools. This year, Marilynn and John Hill pledged an additional $75,000 over five years to enhance the capstone course by bringing in guest curators and artists to work with students.

“We endorse and support the Parents’ Fund primarily because the College has provided our son and daughter with endless opportunities throughout their four-year journeys. It has helped them build a solid launch pad for them to do great things throughout their lives.” -Chris and Terri Walker, parents of Brittany 2015 and Christopher 2018, and members of Parent Advisory Council

Hissar Sailing Program In the past three years, through contributions from the Hissar Fund and the Edgar T. Cato Foundation, the CofC sailing team has been able to purchase 18 new FJ racing sailboats and 10 new J/22 keelboats. These new boats, and future fleets to be replaced, are crucial in maintaining the strength and focus of our nationally ranked program. Support for equipment upgrades enable the team to race and train effectively and fortify our sailing association’s support of the Charleston sailing community.

Taking its name from the majestic live oak trees that

make the College’s campus so distinct, the Live Oak Society recognizes our most loyal donors (those who give consistently for five years or more and provide the roots of the College’s philanthropic foundation). Live Oak Society donors are leaders in making the College of Charleston a priority year after year, and their generosity continues to advance the mission of the College.

Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Center Expansion Breaks Ground The centerpiece of the Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Center is the Dr. Martin Perlmutter Dining Hall, a kosher vegan/vegetarian facility, which will not simply add an additional meal option for our students, but also will create a space that recognizes the great power and importance of food in bringing people together and establishing a true sense of place and community. The facility will cater to an eager and emergent audience of student and community members by sourcing ethical, sustainable and local food in a facility that will utilize recycled and local materials.

Cougar Club Sees Gains in StudentAthlete Scholarships Gifts to the Cougar Club provide financial support for student-athlete scholarships, in addition to sportspecific fundraising and athletic facility improvements. The charitable donations of alumni, friends and fans in 2014 were vital to both the short- and long-term growth and success of CofC athletics, as we look to build and sustain a competitive athletics program in the Colonial Athletics Association and the NCAA.

The Grant Mayo Eney Endowed Scholarship Fund This fund was established through the generous donations of Parent Advisory Council members and the family and friends of Grant Mayo Eney. Grant was loved, respected and admired by all who knew him, and the impact he made on campus was tremendous. His ambition, loyalty and tenacity made him a leader on campus and in the community. He was interested in real estate and the entertainment industry and was well on his way to making his mark on those industries when he died in 2014. To honor his legacy, his parents, Craig and Katie Eney, have agreed to serve and to advance the cause of the scholarship in his name. In addition to the endowed scholarship, Grant’s SAE fraternity brothers are raising funds to establish the Grant Eney Memorial Fund for Leadership School. L to R: Craig Eney, former President P. George Benson, Grant Eney and Katie Eney at the 2014 Parent Advisory Council reception.
