Middle School Science Students Sweep Contest On March 28th, CHCS middle students received numerous awards at the Regional Science Fair held at Missouri Southern State University. There were entries from nearly 150 students across 15 counties. A special thanks to Mrs. Natalie Hughes, who was named Outstanding Sponsor, for taking our students to this contest for the first year. CHCS Day at MSSU CHCS Day at Missouri Southern State University’s Basketball game was January 28th and was a huge success! Many Cougars were recognized on the court during the games. Members from the National Honor Society, Junior Honor Society, Middle School and High School Scholars Bowl, and our Elementary Top Readers all took center court. Additionally, the CHCS Fine Arts Departments, Missions Week, and our school’s Spiritual Emphasis with worship team were all highlighted on the jumbo-tron. It was truly a fun day to be a CHCS Cougar!
100th Day Celebration Each year, the 100th day of school is a day to celebrate! Students mark this milestone by bringing 100 of various items to school (candy, toy cars, pennies, etc.). They enjoyed several 100-day activities, including jumping on 100 feet of bubble wrap!

Science and Engineering Fair The annual Science and Engineering Fair was held February 9th. For weeks, high school students work on intricate Rube Goldberg and Spaghetti bridge projects. Middle School students perform experiments and put together a project board. Excitement is always in the air to see the various projects on display. Congratulations to all this year’s winners, and thank you to Mrs. Miller and Mr. Endicott for all their hard work as well.

Congratulations to CHCS Musicians Jacob Knudsen was selected into the High School District Honors Band and Desi Hix was selected into the 8th grade Honors Band. Both students auditioned to achieve this honor and were able to perform at the District Band Concerts in January. Nice job Jacob and Desi! Grace Knudsen, Emma Greathouse, and Hannah Belk received “one” ratings at the Instrumental Southwest District Music competition. All three musicians will be going on to the State competition in April. CHCS Mixed Double Quartet, consisting of Hannah Belk, Emma Davison, Willow Jones, Emily Brown, Franklin Buchanan, Myles Jackson, Logan Baker, and Scott Lewis are headed to State competition after receiving “one” ratings. Additionally, soloists Willow Jones, Emma Davison, and Hannah Belk also received one ratings and will advance in the vocal solo competitions as well.
Homecoming Highlights A wonderful evening was enjoyed at this year’s Homecoming festivities. Highlights included a special dinner reception for our alumni.It was wonderful to see familiar faces and friends reconnecting. Our basketball teams took on McAuley High School, and a new king and queen, Matt Gao and Kinlee Jonas, were crowned. It was indeed a memorable evening.

Nominees JOHN BLANKENSHIP
For 32 years, the Joplin Chamber of Commerce has been recognizing excellence in teaching by Joplin teachers through the Golden Apple Awards program. College Heights has consistently had teachers nominated, and this year is no exception. These teachers were nominated by students and parents for their wonderful work with our students. The winner will be announced at the annual Chamber banquet in May. CHCS is very fortunate to have such outstanding teachers! We heartily congratulate this year’s group of Golden Apple nominees.

Annual Spelling Bee Our school’s annual spelling bee was held January 20th with Kelton Welch winning the 4th & 5th grade elementary division and Jay Ball successfully winning the 6th grade middle school competition (his third consecutive win). Each classroom selected their top three spellers for the spelling bee competition.

Senior Athletes Luncheon Senior basketball players and cheerleaders were honored recently for their time on their respected teams. A luncheon was held in the CHCS atrium hosted by the parents. Thank you seniors for your dedication and sportsmanship!
Journalism Students Learn Newsletter Skills Students in Mrs. Stanley’s Journalism class have been publishing a student written newsletter called CHCS Today. Here are two of their most recent stories:
CHCS Math League Rocked the Regional Math Competition by Cloudy Chen
College Heights Math League concluded this season by winning first place at NEO A&M College Division 1 Math Day 2017 on Thursday, Match 30. Attendants also received individual awards in four different math categories. In Algebra 1 Lincoln martin won third place; Taylor Dunham won second place; and Zipporah Jones won first place. For Geometry there was a tie for first place between Tessa Greathouse and Pierce Gloyer. Will Secker won second place in Algebra 2, and Eden Laws and Daniel Estep achieved first and second place respectively. “This is the conclusion of this year’s Math League unless the SRVC’s responsible person contacts me,” said Mrs. Pamela Green, the coach of Math League. Green also complimented and appreciated the members’ devotion during this season. Math League has overcome all difficulties and obstacles, and truly brought honor to both themselves and the school.
1000 Career Points! Marlee Lett, junior, scored her 1,000th career basketball point in a game against Thomas Jefferson on February 6th. The 5’9” guard/forward averaged 19 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Way to go!
Grace Carter Wins MSSU History Day, Emily Brown takes Third – Both Advance to State by Adam Russell
Our very own Grace Carter won MSSU’s History Day and Emily Brown placed third. Carter and Brown will go to State on April 29th at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Carter did her documentary of Barry Marshall. Her documentary was made with pictures and video of Barry Marshall and his scientific research as well as an audio recording of Grace reading what she had written. She also has to show her documentary, she is interviewed by judges, and must prepare a full annotated bibliography and process paper. Marshall was made known by finding the cause and the cure for ulcers by infecting himself. “I’m really excited! I went last year and hope to move on to nationals again.” Brown did her project over Ethan Allen. Allen helped claim land for the state of Vermont. He also claimed the first fort of the American Revolution. “I’m really excited about going to state because I enjoy getting to share about Ethan Allen with more people.”

Drama One Act Heads to State Congratulations to the CHCS One Act Drama team for their First Place State Qualifying win recently. Anna Souder, Zane Leavens, Emma Davison, Jonah Wilcox, Hannah Bagley, Eden Laws, Daniel Estep, Jacob Knudson, and Matthew Hampton will be State bound in April. Additionally, Nyasha Bgoni was the District Champion Poetry Reader and has qualified for State for the third year in a row! Nice job drama students – CHCS is proud of your accomplishments!
Students’ Artwork Displayed at MSSU In January, six CHCS students had artwork on display at the MSSU Spiva Art Gallery for the MAEA District 9 K-12th grade show. Congratulations Jon St. Clair “Trump Train,” Lauren O’ Hare “Blooming Thoughts,” Ty Paige’s “Mr. Beans,” Gabby Quinn “Brighter Roads Ahead,” Emma Landers “Woman in Rose,” and Claire Johnson “Self Portrait” (pictured counter-clockwise from top left). This is a great honor and is the most highly attended show that the MSSU gallery holds.

Souper Bowl Food Drive In honor of Super Bowl 51, National Honor Society and CH Junior Honor Society hosted a schoolwide drive of cans of chicken noodle soup for their SOUPER BOWL. The officers delivered over 140 cans to Lafayette House on Friday. Thanks for serving our community CHCS students!
Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! On March 2nd, our Preschool 3’s through fifth graders joined together for a fun evening celebrating with Dr. Seuss! A super fun evening of crafts, photo booth, games, and, of course, reading Dr. Seuss books was had by everyone in attendance.
Cougar Card Campaign This year’s Cougar Card campaign has come to a close. Thank you to every student and family who helped sell cards to raise money for the school.
