The Messenger HOW EASILY CAN WE MISS CHRIST By Lakan Mariano Oh, how easy it is, to miss Christ and worship idols of our own creation. The Israelites had seen the power of God in delivering them from bondage in Egypt. Just as quickly, they said, “Come on,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us” (Exodus 32:1). John Calvin is quoted as saying, “the human mind, so to speak, a perpetual factory of idols.” Today, even believers in Jesus Christ are prone to this. When Joshua was trying to figure out how lead a band of shepherds and farmers against the fortified city of Jericho, the preincarnate Christ appeared to him with a drawn sword in his hand and told Joshua, “as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come” (Joshua 5:14). Then the Lord told Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men” (Joshua 6:2). And just so they do not mistake the victory except coming from the Lord God told them how he was going to deliver the city to them. No general would have instructed his troops to do what God told the Israelites to do: marching around the city led by the priests and the ark for six days and on the seventh day marching around the city seven times with the priests blowing on the ram's horns. Today, some people think that the ram's horns is where the power lies. That blowing it gives you victory. That blowing it is what summons the Holy Spirit and disperses demons on your path. How can we so easily miss Christ? How could they miss the God who gave them victory over Jericho? How can we miss the God who has purchased victory for us through his blood?
