The Messenger THE POINT OF HEAVEN By Lakan Mariano The streets of gold, the gates, each carved out of a giant pearl, the dazzling colors of its foundation, they are all a reflection of the beauty and magnificence of God. Heaven is not a collection of fluffs of cloud on which believers in Jesus Christ will sit with a harp. John's apocalyptic vision describes it for us:
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband” (Revelation 21:1-2). A new heaven and a new earth. The new Jerusalem coming down from heaven. Heaven will be on earth. But the main point of heaven is not the gold and the silver, even though that is what is sung in many churches. The point of heaven is that God will be with us, God will be with believers in Jesus Christ. Forever.
“Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” (Revelation 21:3-4). Our eternal home is much more than a place. It is a Person. “God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.” Jesus said the same thing. “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that YOU ALSO MAY BE WHERE I AM” (John 14:3, emphasis mine). Old testament saints like Moses understood this. “God, it seems you’ve been our home forever” (Psalm 90:1, MSG). In years past, when I was out of town for an extended period of time, I longed for home. I did not miss my desk nor my recliner. Not even my bed. I missed Kim. Home would not have been home without Kim. Heaven will not be heaven without God, without Christ. ~Lakan
