-Day 2FridaY, September 8 We had a busy first full day in Boston planned for our JUKF guests. First, we had a private tour scheduled in the Massachusetts State House. The JUKF members learned about the history of the state house and how politics in the US works in these formal settings. We saw the government cabinet and saw the hall where public events are held. This hall holds all of the flags for the various cities in the order they were founded in MA, starting with Plymouth. After the State House tour, we had a picnic lunch to enjoy the weather in the Boston Commons, which is the oldest public park in the US, established in 1634.

06

07

We then headed to the Consulate General of Japan in Boston, where we had organized a meeting with Mr. Shinichi Honda, Consul of Cultural and General Affairs, where Mr. Honda explained the work that is done at the Consulate and how they serve the Japanese Diaspora throughout New England. The lecture was concluded with a gift exchange between our members of the MIT Harvard Karatedo Hub (MHKH) and JUKF for the consulate members.

08

09

Following our formal afternoon activities, we had Karate training scheduled at Boston University. The BU Karate club had reserved a big gymnasium for a Karate practice with more than 50 students! Seki Sensei and Kobayashi Sensei from Osaka Institute of Technology (OIT) hosted a training that went through fundamental basics (kihon), basic sparring (kumite) as well as free sparring (jiyu kumite) drills. Seki Sensei and Kobayashi Sensei made the class exciting by making some competition games for the kihon drills to push students to increase their power and speed.

10

11

After training Karate together, we went to Timeout Market to enjoy dinner and socialize together. Timeout Market was a nice venue where students could pick from the variety of different food options available, such as American, Korean, Mexican, Italian, Armenian, and Japanese stalls. Students from our Boston area universities, Cornell University, and the various Japanese universities had a chance to meet each other, learn more about each other’s fields of study, hopes and dreams post graduation, and Karate passion.

12

-Day 3Saturday, September 9 We started our Saturday with various lectures organized by our MHKH members at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Cassiano gave a lecture about the 7 principles of Harvard University’s negotiation program, the history of the program, and why it is considered the best program in the world in negotiation. Cassiano helped the students understand how to apply the negotiation principles through a game where they had to put the concepts into action, and the students had a lot of fun going through the process. The JUKF students learned about Best Alternative to Negotiated Agreement (BATNA), how to make a decision under pressure, and how to be more persuasive.

13

Ricardo Harripaul, explained the work in general at the Broad and the 5 pillars of the institute: Cancer research, Psychiatry, Heart disease, Rare diseases, and Infectious disease. Then in the meeting room, Ricardo gave a talk about his PhD work studying autism and learning disorders, and about his own personal experience teaching Tae Kwon Do to young students with autism in Canada. Next, we had Amandine Fromont (law student at Georgetown Law) give a lecture about law school and the legal system in the US. After that, we had Nikita Patil (PhD from U. Texas at Austin) give a lecture on the health benefits of seaweed (nori) for heart health, which was of great interest to our JUKF friends.

After the lectures, we walked through MIT campus to have another big Karate training, this time outdoors at MIT Killian Court. This practice was led by Ryusei Fujita (OIT Karate club captain), focused on practicing Karate basics (kihon) and also on partner drills for free sparring (jiyu kumite), particular jab (kizami zuki) and counterpunch (gyaku zuki). We then enjoyed the warm weather with some pizza lunch at Killian Court, before moving to the MIT Sailing Pavilion. Eric Gibber gave a tour and lecture about the history of the MIT Sailing Pavilion. The MIT Sailing Pavilion is the birthplace of university sailing in the US, starting in 1936. Cassiano, Lorraine, and Amandine had reserved two lynx cat boats to take our JUKF friends out on the Charles River, while Emile used his DJ skills to play music and have a small party on the dock.

18

19

20

At night, Ricardo had reserved the rooftop at the Watermark Kendall for the formal welcoming reception. We had food, drinks, and an opportunity for the students to meet and mingle, dance and have fun. To finalize the evening, we had formal welcoming speeches given by Osada Sensei (Vice President of the JUKF) and by Vazrik Chiloyan on behalf of our MHKH team, as well as brief introductions by various Karateka attending the event, namely Jose Delgado (Cornell Karate club instructor), John Pirrung (Cornell Karate club president), Eshaan Vakil (Harvard Karate club president), Sofija Obradovic (Boston University Karate club president), Johanna Hoffmann (Oxford Karate club president), Lorenzo Tranchedone (Oxford Karate club previous president), Emile Zounon (Harvard Karate club member), and Bartolo Sensei (7th Dan) from Brazil. The Karate club presidents of each university gave a brief welcoming speech to introduce themselves and their clubs, and to foster this growing network of friendship. We had a gift exchange to solidify our bond of friendship, and discussed future plans to continue to foster the growth of our Karate organizations through the power of altruism.

21

-Day 4Sunday, September 10 Sunday was filled with an exciting schedule for the seniors and the students. First, the JUKF seniors hosted an official JUKF Dan exam for Amy Liu (Wellesley College), Zeng Wing Tan (Boston University), Ricardo Harripaul (Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard). The Dan exam was at the MIT T-Club Lounge in the MIT gym. The students demonstrated their kihon, favorite kata as well as a Heian kata, and free sparring to the examiners, followed by a class led by Hashimoto Sensei, Seki Sensei, and Kobayashi Sensei on kata bunkai (applications for kata movements).

22

We then had a formal lunch at Fogo de Chão in Boston with our Oxford, Cornell, and JUKF friends to discuss future opportunities in the US, England, and Japan. During this time, the students enjoyed a day of sightseeing and lunch in Boston’s Quincy Market.

23

24

They then had tickets to go to the Museum of Science to see the various exhibits. At night, everyone joined for a celebration dinner at the Mad Monkfish in Cambridge, where we celebrated the halfway mark of our JUKF visit events, as well as the Dan exam results. We are proud to have 3 new JUKF Shodan Black Belts - Amy Liu, Zeng Wing Tan, Ricardo Harripaul! Their official JUKF black belts and certificates will be delivered during our trip in Japan in November 2023.

26

-Day 5Monday, September 11 On Monday morning, we had several volunteers with cars that drove the JUKF members to Plymouth, MA. As we learned at the State House on Friday, Plymouth was the first city founded in MA (1620). The students went to see a tour of the Mayflower II and to learn about this aspect of US history. The tour guide himself, Mr. Howie, told a story about how his great ancestor came to the US on the Mayflower and how he survived the difficult journey.

27

After the Mayflower tour, we enjoyed lunch with our newly made Lebanese friend, Mr. Hadi, who served us a delicious lobster and hamburger lunch! We then drove to Wellesley College, where Amandine gave a tour of her alma mater, and the JUKF students got to meet Ashley Yuan, the president of the Wellesley Karate club. Amandine explained that Wellesley College is one of the 7 sister colleges in the US that were founded as women’s liberal arts colleges in 1870.

28

We then returned to Boston after the tour. At night, several of the JUKF members got tickets to the Red Sox game at Fenway Park, the oldest baseball stadium in the US (1912). While the game eventually got rained out, the students were able to watch a few innings before it was postponed due to the weather to the next day.

29

-Day 6Tuesday, September 12 This was the final full day for our JUKF friends in Boston. They spent the morning doing souvenir shopping and buying gifts from the stores in Harvard Square. Harvard University was founded in 1636 is the first college in the American Colonies.

30

We then had Karate practice in the Mezzanine of the Malkin Athletic Center (MAC) of Harvard University. Vazrik Sensei led the Karate practice, focusing on showing the bridge of connection between kihon and kumite training. He had drills that trained kizami zuki and gyaku zuki, starting with very basic kihon versions of the drills, which increased in complexity to the final advanced form that is used in jiyu kumite. The JUKF students demonstrated their technique with a pad to train power, speed, and precision. Then, Vazrik Sensei taught a Shotokan kata Wankan (King’s Crown) to everyone as a kata gift to remember this special training by.

31

Vazrik Sensei taught a class for the 27 JUKF members as well as several of our visiting guests. The attending Karateka came from the universities of Shibaura Institute of Technology, Nihon University, Osaka Institute of Technology, Osaka University of Economics and Law, Tokyo Institute of Technology, University of Tokyo, Otemon Gakuin University, Oxford University, and Harvard University, as well as the high schools Seifugakuen Junior High School and Kouyougakuin Junior High School.

32

At night, we had a farewell dinner at the Mad Monkfish in Cambridge. We enjoyed everyone’s company for one more dinner, and did a special gift exchange between our MHKH team and the JUKF members. The JUKF had extended the official invitation for the MHKH members to visit Japan in November 2023, and in this dinner, Vazrik officially accepted the invitation to come to Japan. The dinner was concluded with a special music performance by Hiro Komine (JUKF), Lorenzo Tranchedone (Oxford University), Emile Zounon (Harvard University) singing the Italian opera song, O sole mio with Takayuki Matsumoto (Osaka Institute of Technology) playing piano. It was the forming of a new band, and an opportunity for Komine san to share his passion for Italian opera with everyone. The evening was concluded with a traditional Japanese ceremony, led by Hashimoto Sensei (Technical Collegiate Karate Federation President).

34

Our JUKF friends flew back to return to Japan. We helped them with transportation to Boston Logan Airport by driving as well as taking the silver line, and spent some final moments with the students before departing. We promised to visit Japan, so we knew that this was not ‘goodbye’, but rather ‘see you soon’! As always, the best is yet to come!

#JUKF AND #MHKH IN THE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS

7,800+ SOCIAL MEDIA INTERACTIONS AND ENGAGEMENTS

During the visit by the JUKF delegation to Boston, we used various social media platforms to advertise all of the activities that were ongoing. While the Japanese students were sightseeing in Boston, we prepared photos and videos to memorialize the day and we would post on the various social media platforms and share the events through a group chat on Line, where the parents of the Japanese students could follow and see all of the ongoing activities day by day. Renata was organizing posts live as Cassiano and the other Boston chaperones would take photos and videos and be able to share and post during the day. At the end of each day, we would have a summary post before midnight that would describe all of the major activities in the day. We had more than 7,000 social media engagements organically with all of the social media platforms during the course of the entire week. Renata Costa Social Media Manager
