NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS IN DESIGN College of Design Leading ISU’s Participation in Smithsonian Folklife Festival

Iowa State will be among the exhibitors at this summer’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The festival focus is land-grant universities and the USDA. Iowa State’s high-tech, interactive exhibit will showcase College of Design and Extension and Outreach efforts to help communities meet challenges. The exhibit design and content teams are led by College of Design faculty, and many of the projects and activities will highlight our student and faculty work. [Read more]

Graphic Design Grad Student Wins First Fabric Design Competition Challenge

Graphic design grad student Michele Rosenboom (BFA 2000 Interior Design) won the “Tiny Dwellings” design challenge in the “Repeat” competition sponsored by The Printed Bolt. Her winning fabric patterns will be used in a French braid quilt for display at the Spring Quilt Market in Kansas City. Voting for the second challenge (creating one fabric design that embodies the industrial revolution) takes place April 12-15. Two more designers will be eliminated after this round of competition. At the end of the contest, the grand prize winner will receive a trip to Houston for Quilt Market 2012.

ISA Associate Professor April Katz Named Honorary SGC International Member

April Katz, associate professor of integrated studio arts, was made an honorary member of SGC (Southern Graphics Council) International and awarded lifetime membership in the nonprofit printmaking organization at its annual conference in New Orleans during spring break. She was recognized for her outstanding service to the organization as well as her contributions to printmaking through her teaching and art practice. Katz has been a member since 1995 and served as president from 2004 to 2006.

NOTEWORTHY ALUMS Brent S. L. Collins

After four years with the Chicago office of Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Brent S. L. Collins (BArch 2008 Architecture) will leave in June to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in woodworking from the Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland. [Read more]


Sean Eagleburger

Sean Eagleburger (BFA 2005 Interior Design), St. Louis, has been named a 2012 Iowa STATEment Maker by the ISU Alumni Association. Eagleburger, who is the programming director for Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women, works more broadly to advance and promote Greek life on college campuses across the country. [Read more]

Mark Kargol

Mark Kargol (BArch 2000 Architecture / BFA 2000 Art & Design – Craft Design), owner of Ventus Custom Cycles in Lincoln, Neb., recently traveled to Sacramento, Calif., to show a custom titanium/carbon fiber bicycle he built at the 2012 North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS). [Read more]

Jackson Metcalf

Jackson Metcalf, LEED AP BD +C (BArch 2006 Architecture), Chicago, has been named a 2012 Iowa STATEment Maker by the ISU Alumni Association. Metcalf helps lead the facilities practice area in Gensler’s North Central Region and in addition to the Chicago office, he has worked on projects with the firm’s Denver, New York and London offices. Gary Schulte

Gary Schulte, Associate AIA, LEED AP (BArch 1983 Architecture), has joined FEH Associates’ Dubuque office as an architect.

Bethany Wilcoxon

Bethany Wilcoxon (2008 Community & Regional Planning) has been named a 2012 Iowa STATEment Maker by the ISU Alumni Association. She is the associate transportation planner for the Des Moines Metropolitan Planning Organization and project manager for Des Moines’ “Tomorrow Plan.” [Read more]

Wade Ziperstein (BArch 1998 Architecture) recently joined RSP Architects as a project captain for the national design team.

ON ANOTHER NOTE Anderson/Hightshoe Retirement Reception

The Department of Landscape Architecture will honor retiring professors Paul Anderson and Gary Hightshoe with a reception and dinner on Friday, April 13, at the Scheman Building on the Iowa State campus. Hightshoe has been on the faculty since September 1970, while Anderson joined the faculty in September 1977. The free reception will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Brunnier Art Museum, 295 Scheman Building, Iowa State Center. Alumni are welcome and encouraged to attend! (Note that dinner tickets are no longer available.) If you are unable to attend but would like to send a card, please address it to the intended recipient (either Professor Anderson or Professor Hightshoe) and mail it to the Department of Landscape Architecture, 146 Design, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011. Help us celebrate and thank these two distinguished faculty for their decades of service to the department, college, university and profession.

AIA National Convention Alumni Reception

Please join alumni, faculty and friends of the ISU College of Design for a reception Thursday, May 17, during the AIA 2012 National Convention and Design Exposition in Washington, D.C. The reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. in rooms 10 and 11 at the Renaissance Hotel Washington, D.C. Downtown, 999 Ninth St. NW. Enjoy complimentary appetizers and a hosted bar. Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez will give brief remarks beginning at 6:30 p.m. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP by Monday, April 30. We look forward to seeing you there!


Alumni Days Open House

The College of Design will host an open house from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 11, during ISU’s Alumni Days celebration. All alumni who attended or graduated from any of our programs (including prior to the college’s founding!) are invited to attend. Alumni Days are May 10-12; see the complete schedule of events.
