NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS IN DESIGN Smithsonian Folklife Festival Exhibit Heads to State Fair
Iowa State faculty, staff and students return from Washington, D.C., this week after a highly successful run for the university’s “Transforming Communities: Design in Action” exhibit at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. The festival was closed one day to assess and repair damage to tents and other structures caused by the intense “derecho” thunderstorm complex that hit the area June 29. Fortunately, our exhibit weathered the storm remarkably well, and will next appear at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines Aug. 9-19 and the Farm Progress Show near Boone Aug. 28-30. Student, Alumni Work Featured at Des Moines Arts Festival
College of Design student and alumni artists withstood soaring temperatures, blazing sun and soaking rain (in other words, a typical summer weekend in Iowa!) during the three-day Des Moines Arts Festival. Sales were strong for many, and our folks enjoyed interacting with visitors, who included Janet Leath, spouse of President Steven Leath, and Ana Gomez Fernandez, spouse of Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez—shown here with Emerging Iowa Artist Elizabeth Mason (BFA 2010 Integrated Studio Arts). College Appoints Permanent, Interim Department Chairs
Following approval of the College of Design’s reorganization plan by the state Board of Regents in April and subsequent approval of a revised internal governance document by the college faculty in May, the College of Design now encompasses seven academic departments: architecture, community and regional planning, graphic design, industrial design, integrated studio arts, interior design and landscape architecture. Effective July 1, faculty members who served as interim directors of these programs for the past two years are continuing as department chairs—some with permanent appointments, some in interim positions until searches and selection processes can be completed.
Design Dean Co-Chairs Engineering Dean Search Committee
College of Design Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez and David Holger, associate provost for academic programs and dean of the Graduate College, are co-chairs of the 20-member committee tasked with finding a successor to Engineering Dean Jonathan Wickert, who becomes senior vice president and provost on July 30.
IVA Graduate Student Amanda Hall’s Work in American Illustration 31
”Hoard House,” a project by Amanda Hall (BA 2005 Biological/Pre-Medical Illustration), a graduate student in integrated visual arts from Hamburg, was selected for inclusion in American Illustration 31 (in print and online). The project—which includes a hand-colored print that can either be cut out and assembled (image at left) or viewed two-dimensionally, as well as a three-plate lithograph—explores issues of cultural excess and hoarding. Hall completed the project in Associate Professor April Katz’s fall 2011 lithography class. She is slated to graduate with her MFA in December.
Graphic Design Junior Irene Lopez Designs Children’s Museum Mural
Irene Lopez, a junior in graphic design from Sioux City and a summer “student in residence” with ISU Design West, created a mural for an exterior wall of the future Children’s Museum of Siouxland. Her design is based on the museum’s logo, which incorporates three colorful, stylized gears. In June, young students added aqua, hot pink and lime green handprints to the mural, and Lopez will complete the piece with artwork collected from local kindergarteners. Her residency is funded by ISU Design West and Sioux City’s Downtown Partners. [See KCAU Channel 9 video] [See KTIV News 4 video]
NOTEWORTHY ALUMS Stewart Buck
“Tracks: The Railroad Artwork of Stewart Buck” (BA 1973 Applied Art – Advertising Design / BA 1975 Applied Art – Art Education / MA 1975 Applied Art) is on display in the Community Gallery of the Octagon Center for the Arts in Ames through Aug. 11. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Jeremy Caniglia (BFA 1993 Art & Design – Drawing/Painting/Printmaking) is featured in “Fantasy Art: A New Look at an Ancient Tradition,” an article by Peter Trippi, in the July/ August issue of Fine Art Connoisseur. [Read more]

Riley Christopher-Gallagher (BArch 2010 Architecture & Environmental Studies / MS 2011 Architecture) joined Elkus Manfredi Architects, Boston, as an intern architect earlier this month.
Thomas Fraser
Thomas Fraser (BArch 2011 Architecture) recently joined Shulman + Associates, Miami, Fla., as an intern architect. He had been a project manager at Habitar Design in Chicago.
Theaster Gates, Jr.
”12 Ballads for Huguenot House” by Theaster Gates, Jr. (BS 1996 Community & Regional Planning / MA 2005 Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies), is part of Documenta 13, an exhibition representing artists from 50 countries, on view through Sept. 16 in Kassel, Germany. A June 14 New York Times art review calls his work “a resonant walk-in collage of recycled building materials punctuated with videos and occasional performances.”
Stephanie Hertel
Stephanie Hertel (BFA 2007 Graphic Design / Marketing), art director for Staples Promotional Products in Overland Park, Kan., won the $4,000 grand prize in the Pin & Win Better Homes and Gardens Dream Home contest on Pinterest. [Read more]
Kristen Kruse
Kristen Kruse, Associate AIA, LEED AP BD+C (BArch 2010 Architecture), Burnsville, Minn., recently joined BWBR, Saint Paul, Minn., as a technical designer. She previously worked at ge Wattier Architecture in Des Moines.
Dale McKinney
Dale McKinney, FAIA, NCARB (BA 1975 Architecture), founding partner of M+ Architects in Sioux City, was elected second vice president of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards at its annual meeting in Minneapolis in June. He will serve in this position through June 30, 2013. [Read more]
Amrutesh Mohanty
Amrutesh Mohanty, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP BD+C (MArch 2011 Architecture), recently joined the New York City office of Ismael Leyva Architects as an intermediate architect. He just completed work on a mixed-use high-rise building in the Chelsea area of Manhattan, N.Y., and is now working on two luxury hotels in Midtown Manhattan.
Jon Pickard, William Chilton
New Haven, Conn.-based Pickard Chilton has won a 2012 Green Good Design Award from the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design for the firm’s design of BG Group Place in Houston. Founding principals are Jon Pickard, FAIA, RIBA, and William D. Chilton, FAIA, RIBA (both BA 1976 Architecture). [Read more]
Michele Rosenboom
Michele Rosenboom (BFA 2000 Interior Design / MA 2012 Graphic Design) won the Flea Market Challenge in the Repeat competition sponsored by The Printed Bolt and is one of three designers to advance into the final round. Designs for the final challenge will be posted Aug. 2, and Readers’ Choice voting will close at midnight Aug. 5. The grand prize winner will receive a trip to Houston for Quilt Market 2012.

They’re taking classes with our faculty in the College of Design and touring local art studios and design firms during the day, and engaging in social activities and staying at the Iowa 4-H Camp near Luther each night. Advancement Council in Spain
Seven members of the College of Design Advancement Council, accompanied by spouses or other family members, will join Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez and Development Director Colleen Rogers on a 10-day trip to Spain, July 22-Aug. 1. With a focus on design education and practice in Spain and Europe, the trip will help the group identify expectations of study abroad, opportunities to expand our offerings beyond Rome, and ways to introduce global practice into the classroom.
