C O M P R E H E N S I V E D E S I G N E D U C AT I O N The College of Design at Iowa State University is one of the nation’s most comprehensive institutions for art and design education. Few other institutions, public or private, can boast the impressive array of disciplines we support under one collegiate “roof.” This leads to a strong, multidisciplinary network of design thinking that directly benefits you. As a student in the College Design, you’ll work alongside your peers from majors including architecture, landscape architecture, biological/pre-medical illustration, studio arts, planning, and industrial, graphic, interdisciplinary and interior design to earn a well-rounded education and build valuable relationships for the future. The College of Design’s studio method approach and interdisciplinary focus make us Iowa State’s center for self-discovery and unconstrained creativity. The rigor of our design education begins in the Core Design Program and is reinforced in our degree programs through cross-country field trips, study abroad opportunities including our Rome Program, and internship and career support. Our nationally ranked programs, status within the design community and longestablished network of loyal employers demonstrate our commitment to providing a world-class education.
We are proud to be housed within a land-grant institution, and our curricula echo Iowa State’s outreach mission. Our students and faculty work with communities and leaders locally, nationally and globally to elevate the arts, promote sustainability and champion social change. With a 97% job or graduate education placement rate within six months of graduation, we are dedicated to graduating highly skilled, innovative and visionary designers who are well positioned to address contemporary design issues and societal needs. In our small college of 1800 undergraduate and 200 graduate students at Iowa’s largest university, you’ll have access to the best that both worlds have to offer. You’ll enjoy an average class size of 16 students with hands-on instruction from our nationally and internationally renowned faculty. Take advantage of our state-of-theart production and fabrication facilities to turn your ideas into reality. At the same time, you’ll have access to more than 900 student organizations, one of the most beautiful campuses in the country, awardwinning faculty and courses in more than 100 disciplines across campus.

CORE DESIGN PROGRAM* The College of Design doesn’t require applicants to submit portfolios to be considered for admission. The College of Design instead provides all incoming students the opportunity to begin developing the skills needed to be successful designers through the Core Design Program prior to formal enrollment in our degree programs. We believe design thinking can be learned, and that everyone deserves access to a world-class design education. We also know students often shift their focus upon exposure to the vast array of opportunities in design! In the Core Program, you’ll take a 2D representation course, an art history and theory class, a 3D design studio course and an orientation seminar to expose you to the many possibilities within design. We also host an event called Program Night twice a year to show you our degree programs in action. By the end of the Core, you’ll have the foundation for succeeding in any of our majors with the bonus of a clearer vision of who you are as a designer. During spring semester of your Core year, you’ll submit your newly created portfolio as well as an essay to apply to all the professional programs that pique your interest! *Students interested in pursuing our Community and Regional Planning or Art and Design Visual Culture Studies programs are not required to complete the College of Design Core Design Program.
