IN THE NEWS Architectural Technology Expert Kiel Moe to Speak at ISU Feb. 22

Harvard University architectural technology professor Kiel Moe will address the formation of energy in contemporary architecture in a lecture Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Iowa State University. Moe’s talk, part of the ISU Architecture Advisory Council Lecture Series, will be at 5:30 p.m. in Kocimski Auditorium, Room 101 College of Design. The event is free and open to the public. College’s Reorganization Plan Clears Faculty Senate Vote

A reorganization plan for the College of Design received unanimous support from the university’s Faculty Senate at its meeting last Tuesday, Feb. 14. The plan calls for expansion from four to seven departments in the college, including architecture, community and regional planning, graphic design, industrial design, integrated studio arts, interior design and landscape architecture. The senate’s endorsement of the plan will be forwarded to Elizabeth Hoffman, executive vice president and provost.

CoD Students Win Exhibition Awards

Six College of Design students took home awards Tuesday, Feb. 21, in the “Assembled: Metal, Wood, Clay, Fiber and Mixed Media” exhibition at the Memorial Union Pioneer Room. Stephanie Schoeller, senior in integrated studio arts from Ames, won Best in Show for “Shutter.” ISA senior Amber Forbes from Underwood, junior Stephen Sawyer from Ames and graphic design senior Cory Witt from Elkhart won Merit Awards. Seniors Sam Mulholland, architecture, from Fort Madison, and Cody Sherman, ISA, from Stuart, received honorable mentions, and Sherman also won the Purchase Award, for “TeaKi Time.” Twenty-four of the 27 students with work in the show are from the College of Design! The exhibition is on display through March 18.

DID YOU KNOW? Career Days Call for Student Exhibition Entries

The Career Days Exhibitions Committee seeks student work to fill Gallery 181, the Pickard Chilton Gallery in the King Pavilion, the Dean’s Office walls and the display cases outside the Dean’s Office, Cyber Cafe and in the hallway to Kocimski Auditorium during Career Days 2012, March 1 and 2. You may submit as many pieces of work as you wish, in any media. Each piece must be accompanied by a typed tag with your name and email address (in case a firm would want to contact you based on the work), title of the work and medium. Additional artist’s statements are also welcome. Work and tags may be dropped off 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Design Student Services Office, 297 Design, through Thursday, Feb. 23. The work will be secure as the office is monitored during the day and will be locked overnight. Digital media can be submitted via email to Kyla Lowenberg. Margaret Sloss Gender Equity Award Nominations Due Feb. 24

Nominations are being accepted for the Margaret Sloss Gender Equity Award. Nominees should have demonstrated a commitment to helping women gain equity within the university and/or the Ames community. Significant contributions come in many forms, from public acts such as organizational leadership to personal acts such as academic and professional mentoring. Those eligible for awards include Iowa State faculty and staff, undergraduate and graduate students, and Ames community members. The award will be presented at the Margaret Sloss Gender Equity Awards reception March 20 at the Memorial Union. Nomination forms are due Friday, Feb. 24.

The Art of the Buffet Design Competition Entries Due Feb. 24

Three-person student teams can win up to $75 in ISU Dining Dollars by designing a winning buffet concept in one of three competition categories: ISU theme, seasonal theme or open creative theme. The competition registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 24. To participate, you must attend a one-hour orientation session, 5-6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, and submit your contest entry by noon on March 21. Wanted: LA, CRP Students to Apply for $3,500 Scholarship

Students in landscape architecture and community & regional planning can apply for the $3,500 National Garden Clubs Inc. student scholarship for 2012-2013. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents of the United States. International students are not eligible. Application deadline is Thursday, March 1. Register for ISCORE March 2

Students are invited to attend the 13th Annual Iowa State Conference on Race and Ethnicity (ISCORE), 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, March 2, at the Memorial Union. ISCORE 2012 is a celebration of our diverse community and supports the university’s mission to create, share and apply knowledge to make Iowa and the world a better place. First Half-Semester Student Evaluations Due March 2

Spring 2012 first half-semester course evaluations have been released. The first evaluation period will close Friday, March 2. Please follow the directions in your email to complete the evaluation.

Career Days Panel Discussion

Plan to attend this year’s Career Days panel discussion, 10-11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 1, in Gallery 181. Representatives from Bratney Companies, BWBR Architects, Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, Neumann Monson Architects, OPN Architects and Soulsight will answer questions about careers in design. Several reps also are alumni. Take advantage of this opportunity to interact with professionals and learn more about your field!

Building Hours Over Spring Break

The College of Design will observe abbreviated hours during spring break as follows. The building will close at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 10. Hours will be 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday, March 11, through Saturday, March 17. We will reopen at 7 a.m. Sunday, March 18, and resume normal hours (24 hours/day).

S.H.O.P. Food Pantry

The S.H.O.P. (Students Helping Our Peers) was created last year by a group of Iowa State students to help ISU students who are in need of food assistance. It’s located in 2616 Food Sciences; open hours are 3-6 p.m. Tuesdays and 4-7 p.m. Wednesdays. The S.H.O.P. is run by volunteers and the food comes in through donations. Your ONEderful Design Contest Seeks Poster Entries

Students are invited to design a poster based on the theme “Create something ONEderful” for The One Show’s Your ONEderful Design Contest. You must be 18 or older to enter, and only original works of art created for this contest will be accepted. Entries should be emailed in high-resolution jpeg format to onederful@oneclub.org no later than Friday, March 16. All entries will be posted on Facebook; the entry that receives the most “likes” by March 20 will be declared the winner. The winning design will appear on screen at the 2012 ONE Show and in social media promotion for the ONE Show Festival 2012. Winning designer will receive round-trip E-class airfare for one person to New York City, two nights’ hotel accommodation and one ticket to attend the 2012 ONE Show awards ceremony and after-party. AgArts Local Wonders Potluck Dinner and Awards

If you have ideas for a creative/art project related to food and agriculture and would like some funding for it, develop a proposal and present it at the AgArts Local Wonders Potluck Dinner at 6 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Montebello B&B. Participants are encouraged to create projects that explore the intersection of the arts and agriculture, an agricultural/food theme and/or have a tie to the local community. There is a suggested donation of $20 for all participants except students, who are encouraged to contribute whatever you can, to help fund the awards. Last year the winning proposal received nearly $500. Voting will take place during the dinner, and awards will be given that evening. Those interested should download and complete an application and take it to the potluck. Please also prepare a food item to share at the dinner. Nancy Levandowski, ISU Dining, will judge the most artistic food presentation, and a prize will be awarded. Tegan Swanson and Sue Jarnagin will talk about their recent eco-trip to the Yucatan Peninsula working on herbal medicine with a local women’s social justice group. Last year’s grant winner, Jeanie Kirkpatrick, also will share information on her apron exhibit. Be creative, have fun, and bring your friends -- every vote counts!


JUST FOR GRAD STUDENTS New Graduate Disability Assistantship Program

The Graduate Disability Assistantship Program (GDAP) is open to any students admitted as full or provisional into a degree-seeking master’s or PhD program who have a disability (physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities) under the Americans with Disabilities Act and confirmed through the ISU Student Disability Resources Office. It is up to the student to provide written confirmation from that office that he/she is eligible for the GDAP. All appointments should be for half-time assistantships only. Nominations will be evaluated as they are submitted. If you are interested in and believe you qualify for this new program, work with your department to ensure it submits a nomination with proper documentation. Graduate Thesis Seminars

Graduate students planning to submit a thesis during spring, summer or fall should attend a thesis seminar to clarify procedures, format requirements and common problems for online submission of graduate theses and dissertations at Iowa State. Remaining spring seminars will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23; 10 to 10:50 a.m. and 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, all in 1115 Pearson.
