IN THE NEWS College of Design Leading ISU’s Participation in Smithsonian Folklife Festival

Iowa State will be among the exhibitors at this summer’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The festival focus is land-grant universities and the USDA. Iowa State’s high-tech, interactive exhibit will showcase College of Design and Extension and Outreach efforts to help communities meet challenges. The exhibit design and content teams are led by College of Design faculty, and many of the projects and activities will highlight our student and faculty work. [Read more]

Graphic Design Student Wins First Fabric Design Competition Challenge Graphic design grad student Michele Rosenboom (BFA 2000 Interior Design) won the “Tiny Dwellings” design challenge in the “Repeat” competition sponsored by The Printed Bolt. Her winning fabric patterns will be used in a French braid quilt for display at the Spring Quilt Market in Kansas City. Voting for the second challenge (creating one fabric design that embodies the industrial revolution) will be April 12-16. [Check out the blog and vote for your favorite designs/designer]

Two Teams Share 2012 Hansen Prize

From more than 100 students in seven third-year architecture and landscape architecture studios, four teams and one individual student were chosen to present in the Richard F. Hansen Prize competition held last Wednesday, March 28. Team Veloscape—architecture majors Coaxin Cun, Han Kwon and Laura Lynch—took first place and $2,000. The team of Yeonkyu Park and Lan Pham, also both architecture majors, received second place and $1,000. Congratulations to all the finalists and winners! [See competition photos on Flickr]

ISA Associate Professor April Katz Named Honorary SGC International Member

April Katz, associate professor of integrated studio arts, was made an honorary member of SGC (Southern Graphics Council) International and awarded lifetime membership in the nonprofit printmaking organization at its annual conference in New Orleans during spring break. She was recognized for her outstanding service to the organization as well as her contributions to printmaking through her teaching and art practice. Katz has been a member since 1995 and served as president from 2004 to 2006.


DID YOU KNOW? Focus Grant/Focus Juried Exhibit Reception

Join the Student Union Board and Committee on Lectures for a reception for the annual Focus Grant and Focus Juried Exhibits at 6 p.m. today, April 5, in the Pioneer Room and Gallery at the Memorial Union. Focus Grant recipients will be recognized and awards will be announced for the juried show. The grant exhibit will be on display through April 25 in the Pioneer Room; the juried exhibit will be on display through April 29 in the Gallery. College of Design students are part of both shows.

Students May Now Opt Out of ISU Directory Info through AccessPlus

The process for students to withhold directory information has moved to AccessPlus. You may now request to opt out of ISU directory/public information through the Address Change link on the Student tab in AccessPlus. You may choose to opt out of all directory/ public information, or specify the information you would like to opt out of: in-session address, in-session telephone number, Iowa State email, or a combination of these three choices. Information you select to suppress will not be released to the public unless accompanied by your written authorization. This includes requests from family, friends, potential employers or other institutions. Once the request to suppress information has been submitted, the online directory will update overnight, Monday-Friday only. The request will remain on your student record until you remove or change it through AccessPlus.

Porfolio Critique Session with Oxide Design

The Graphic Design Student Association (GDSA) will host representatives from Oxide Design in Omaha, Neb., for an evening of portfolio critiques and a question-and-answer session with College of Design students. “Hey Students: Live� will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. next Wednesday, April 11, in 330 Design. Anyone interested in signing up for a critique should email Brooke Batterson.

Feed the Need Food Drive through April 12

ISU Student Volunteer Services is sponsoring its annual spring food drive now through Thursday, April 12. Gather your nonperishable food items and take them to drop boxes in buildings throughout campus, including Curtiss Hall, Kildee Hall, LeBaron Hall, Memorial Union, College of Design, Carver Hall, Parks Library and Hamilton Hall. All donations will go to Students Helping Our Peers (SHOP) and Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA). SHOP is a student-run food pantry on campus for Iowa State students. MICA is a nonprofit organization that serves local families in the five counties in the Ames area. Spread the word, donate food, and help feed the need! Please direct questions to Sara Kinderknecht.

Retirement Reception and Dinner for LA Professors Paul Anderson and Gary Hightshoe

The Department of Landscape Architecture will honor retiring professors Paul Anderson and Gary Hightshoe with a reception and dinner on Friday, April 13, at the Scheman Building on the Iowa State campus. Hightshoe has been on the faculty since September 1970, while Anderson joined the faculty in September 1977. The free reception will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Brunnier Art Museum, 295 Scheman. Dinner will begin at 7 p.m.; tickets are $28. RSVP for the reception and order your tickets online at http://www.eventbrite.com/event/3249941663. If you are unable to attend but would like to leave a card, please address it to the intended recipient (either Professor Anderson or Professor Hightshoe) and drop it off in the Business Office, 146 Design. Help us celebrate and thank these two distinguished faculty for their decades of service to the department, college, university and profession.


RSVP for College of Design Graduation Convocation

The College of Design’s spring graduation convocation will take place Saturday, May 5. The event begins with a reception for graduating students and their families at 9:30 a.m. in the King Pavilion, followed by a recognition ceremony at 10 a.m. in the Lightfoot Forum. No cap or gown required! Formal invitations will be mailed to candidates for graduation and their families early this month. You are asked to RSVP online by 5 p.m. Friday, April 20, so we will know how many plan to attend. Go to the student portal and click on the Graduation Ceremony Signup link. Please note there is limited seating availability; please consider this when you choose how many guests to bring. LGBTSS Pride Project, Awards and Scholarships

As part of its Pride Project, the Office of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Student Services and the LGBTSS Advisory Board seek submissions of victories (small or large) that have had an impact on the lives of LBGTA individuals throughout the year. These will be shared at the university’s Lavender Graduation on May 3. If you are interested in sharing a victory, complete the Pride Project submission form no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 18. Awards and scholarships also will be presented at the ceremony. Please consider nominating individuals for various awards, and apply for the Scott Rohlf Presidential Leadership Initiative Award, open to juniors and seniors. See the LGBTSS Awards and Scholarships page for more information. Nominations and applications must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 18.

Core Portfolio Submission

Students in the Core Design Program who wish to apply for admission to one or more of the College of Design’s degree programs must fill out an online application form and submit portfolios and hard copies of your essay between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday, May 4, or Monday, May 7; the location will be announced soon in core classes and on the core website. The online application must be completed before you can submit your portfolio and essay.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS Open Forum with ISU President and Provost

Students are invited to attend an open forum with ISU President Steven Leath and Executive Vice President and Provost Elizabeth Hoffman from 1 to 2 p.m. today, April 5, in Gallery 181. Meet our new university president and hear his plans for the coming year.


Get Your Awards Day Brunch Tickets!

The College of Design’s annual Awards Day program this year will be on Wednesday, April 18. The reception will begin at 9:30 a.m. with brunch served in Gallery 181, followed by the presentation of several departmental and college awards at 10 a.m. in the Lightfoot Forum. Those who wish to attend the brunch should pick up a free ticket in the Dean’s Office (134 Design) by 5 p.m. this Friday, April 6. Eat yummy food and help celebrate the accomplishments of College of Design students, faculty and staff!

Call for Entries: Smithsonian Folklife Festival Interactive Exhibit Feature

Iowa State University is participating in this year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., for two weeks in June and July. The ISU exhibit design committee seeks student ideas for creative, interactive features to be incorporated into our exhibit on design thinking and innovation. The competition is open to all ISU undergraduate and graduate students enrolled this academic year (2011-2012). You may work individually or in small teams to develop entries, which will be due electronically by 11 p.m. this Saturday, April 7. See the competition website for complete details. Please note that you are not responsible for fabricating your final designs. Judges will consider the strength of the submission’s idea as the primary deciding factor and the execution of the submission as secondary—so please submit your ideas even if you don’t feel they are “competition ready!”

Biorenewables Juried Art Competition Entries Due April 12

Students enrolled in integrated studio arts/integrated visual arts courses are invited to submit work created in any ART, ART IS or ART ED class to the Biorenewables Research Laboratory Juried Student Art Competition. A prospectus and entry form are available in 156 Design. Submissions must include a 150- to 300-word artist statement describing the life cycle of the materials used in the artwork OR the life cycle of the subject matter depicted. Entries should be dropped off between 1 and 5 p.m. next Thursday, April 12, in the BRL lobby. Accepted work will be on display April 20, 2012, through April 5, 2013. Awards including $750 Best in Show, $250 First Prize, $125 Second prize and $75 Third Prize will be announced at the opening reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 20. Contact Chris Martin, associate professor of integrated studio arts, with any questions.

If your student organization has an event planned or needs to get the word out to other College of Design students about an opportunity or deadline, you can submit an announcement to Design Student News. Please email isucod@iastate.edu with as much information as you can provide (event or opportunity, date, time, location, fee if any, contact details, etc.). The student e-blast is sent every other Wednesday afternoon throughout the semester. Please try to submit your announcement no later than 5 p.m. two days prior. The next one will be April 18 (so try to have your news submitted by 5 p.m. Monday, April 16).
