IN THE NEWS PBS Documentary Highlights Monumental Project Managed by Design Alumnus
An award-winning project coordinated and managed by College of Design alumnus Steven Boody (BS 1971 Forestry / MLA 1974 Landscape Architecture) of Boody Fine Arts, St. Louis, Mo., is the subject of a PBS documentary that will air at 9 a.m. this Saturday, Oct. 22, and 8 p.m. next Tuesday, Oct. 25, on IPTV World. “Making an American Monument: an Epic Journey in Bronze” shows how America’s largest installation of site-specific bronze--located in Omaha, Neb.--evolved from concept to installation over 11 years. Boody served as the art consultant and project manager, assisted in assembling the team of design professionals and artists, and has continued to oversee implementation of the project’s master plan. ISA Associate Professor Teresa Paschke Exhibition Interview Now Online Teresa Paschke, associate professor of integrated studio arts, was interviewed by Art St. Louis in conjunction with the gallery’s Fiber Focus 2011 exhibition, which closed last Thursday, Oct. 13. Paschke had two textile artworks–”A.K.” and “Hip-Hop Samper”–in the show, which featured 56 artworks by 42 artists from seven Midwestern states. “A.K.” was awarded second place. [Read the interview]
ANNOUNCEMENTS Help Fifth-Year LA Students ‘Cash Out Hunger’
Join the fifth-year landscape architecture class and Move the Food to support the Greater Des Moines Area Food Pantry Network in an effort to “Cash Out Hunger.” Every year 9,000 people benefit from the efforts of the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC), which runs the food pantry, and efforts such as Cash Out Hunger. Although food donations are helpful, your cash donation will go up to six times further in helping DMARC provide meals for even more people. Throughout Homecoming week (this week), Cash Out Hunger will accept donations from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily on central campus, at Parks Library and in the foyer outside the Dean’s Office in the College of Design. Every dollar donated will result in a plate being displayed in an art installation to represent the number of meals provided to area residents.
Sticks Creates Mural at Horticulture Hall this Week
Artists from Sticks, Inc., are wood burning and painting a mural installation this week in the atrium of Horticulture Hall. In September, Sticks’ owner, Sara Grant, took up residency to design and draw several panels in the space where the mural will be permanently installed as part of the Horticulture Teaching and Research Greenhouse Complex construction project. The completed mural, funded through the Art in State Buildings legislation, will be the newest work of art on the Iowa State campus. You’re invited to check out the artists’ progress from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through this Friday, Oct. 21.
Program Night for Core Students is Thursday, Oct. 20
Students in the first-year Core Design Program are encouraged to attend the College of Design Program Night from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20. Representatives from each of our degree programs will be available to talk about their programs and answer your questions to help you decide what areas you want to apply to at the end of the year. Registration for Seniors Begins Thursday, Oct. 20
Thursday, Oct. 20, is the first day seniors can register for spring 2012 classes. AccessPlus registration hours are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
Sign Up for Spring 2012 Option Studios by Oct. 24
Students interested in taking one of the 14 option studios offered for the spring 2012 semester must sign up online by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24. You will be asked to select and rank your three preferences. You can check which section you are in on AccessPlus by Friday, Oct. 28.
Drive By Press on Campus Oct. 25-27
Gregory Nanney and Joseph Velasquez, two artists who together form Drive By Press, will be on campus for a series of events Oct. 25-27. They will offer lithography demonstrations, participate in student critiques, use wood cuts and a portable printing press to print T-shirts and posters, and present several public lectures as well as a discussion with upper-level undergraduates interested in applying to grad schools. They will also share a collection of contemporary prints from artists all over the country in a three-day exhibition in Gallery 181. Udall Scholarship Informational Meetings Oct. 26 and 28
The Udall Foundation awards scholarships of up to $5,000 to college students of outstanding potential who are committed to careers related to the environment, tribal public policy or Native American health care. Candidates must be nominated by their university. Udall applicants must be sophomore or junior-level students with a minimum 3.0 GPA (though competitive candidates likely will have significantly higher GPAs), plan full-time study for the 2012-13 academic year and be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or U.S. permanent resident. Native American and Alaska Native nominees in tribal public policy or health care must submit copies of relevant enrollment forms or descent documentation. Informational meetings about the Udall Scholarship will be at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, and 12:10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, in 1151 Jischke. Each meeting will describe the scholarship, application procedures and the process by which ISU will select candidates for endorsement, so you need attend only one of them. Don’t Delay: Oct. 28 is Last Day to Add/Drop a Class
The last day for students to add or drop a fall-semester class is Friday, Oct. 28. You will need your instructor’s and adviser’s signatures, and the add/drop slip must be walked over to 10 Enrollment Services by that date. Please do not wait until the 28th to try to get signatures; your instructor or adviser may not be available that day. Anything dropped after Oct. 28 will require an extenuating circumstance form in addition to the drop slip and must be submitted to the college’s Academic Standards Committee for approval. Add/ drop slips can be found in the Design Student Services Office, 297 Design.
SAC Leadership & Service Center Now Open at MU
The Leadership and Service Center, a one-stop shop for all student leadership and service needs, is now open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Student Activities Center, East Student Office Space, Office H, on the first floor of the Memorial Union. The center’s staff can provide advice and consultation to help you or your organization improve leadership skills, plan retreats, create a vision and set goals, etc. The center also houses the leadership library and hosts staff from the Volunteer Center of Story County from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday. You can set up an appointment by emailing lscenter@iastate.edu or chat with center staff on their website. You can also stop by during open hours.

JUST FOR GRAD STUDENTS Sign Up for a Thesis Seminar
Graduate students planning to submit a thesis during fall, spring or summer should plan to attend one of the fall-semester thesis seminars to clarify procedures, format requirements and common problems for online submission of graduate theses and dissertations at Iowa State. Seminars are scheduled from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2:10 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15 and 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, all in 1115 Pearson. Graduation Deadline Information Available Online
Information on graduation deadlines for fall 2011, spring 2012 and summer 2012 can be downloaded from the Graduate College website. Graduation/thesis forms are also online. Students who are turning in a thesis/dissertation between now and Dec. 1 should be sure to check your email frequently for notification of any revisions that must be made for you to graduate.
