STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES
Medical Clinic
Comprehensive medical care is available to all eligible FAU students. General medical care is provided for illness and injuries, men and women’s health issues, mental health issues, and health promotion counseling. The student health fee included in each student’s tuition subsidizes the cost of medical visits. Reduced fees are offered for laboratory testing, medical treatments, procedures, medication, equipment, and supplies. All services are available by appointment. Visit fau.edu/shs.
Immunizations
All new FAU students will have an initial immunization hold. Prior to registration, all students must submit a completed FAU Immunization Form. All students born after 1956 must also submit documented proof of
immunity to Measles and Rubella. All students must submit documentation of vaccination against Hepatitis B and Meningococcal Meningitis or sign a waiver. Please contact FAU’s Immunization Office at 561.297.0049 or visit fau.edu/shs if you have questions regarding immunization requirements.
Counseling
The FAU Counseling and Psychological Services Center provides FAU students with timely and effective mental health services. Our students’ wellbeing is important to us, which is why we offer services that allow them to maintain and improve their mental health, thereby helping to meet their educational, personal, emotional, and psychological goals. To learn more, visit fau.edu/counseling.

UNIVERSITY ADVISING SERVICES The primary focus of University Advising Services (UAS) is to help first and second year students with their educational goals. The academic advising program is based on the Appreciative Advising model. It is the intentional and collaborative practice of asking positive, open-ended questions that help students optimize their educational experience, achieve their goals, and reach their potential. The student and advisor, as partners, work together to discover the student’s passions and dreams. They will then develop a plan to achieve those dreams, deliver on that plan, and make changes as necessary to achieve their goals. Visit fau.edu/uas.
Advising for the First Semester
Incoming first-year students are advised electronically using OARS, FAU’s first-year Online Advising Resource System. This system provides all students equal access to classes, regardless of their distance from
12
FAU. Students will receive notice via their FAU email account as to when OARS is available to begin the advising process. The following link will take students to the OARS website: fau.edu/uas/oars.php. Upon logging into OARS, students can see their academic advisor’s photo and contact information. They are encouraged to reach out to them with any questions. The student can then view a video that provides step-bystep instructions on how to select the courses they would like approved. Students must complete and submit their proposed courses for an academic advisor’s review and approval. Advisor approval will come in the form of an email, generally within three business days. Students should log back into OARS to view their approved courses, at which point they can register for courses.
www.collegiateparent.com/school/florida-atlantic-university
Completing OARS does not exempt students from attending the University’s mandatory orientation program. After the student’s initial advising with OARS, advising is preferred to be conducted in person.
Advising for the Second Semester
A first-year advising or “UN” hold will prevent students from registering for classes until they have met with an academic advisor to discuss their educational plans and goals. Students should make note of the calendar date for registration and schedule an appointment with their advisor well in advance of the date. This
advising appointment will be one-on-one and offers students the opportunity to create an academic plan for multiple semesters and to discuss and/or seek a host of student support services. Students can schedule an appointment by going to the Advising website at fau.edu/uas. Students are further encouraged to consult their advisor throughout the semester if they are experiencing academic difficulty, have been placed on Freshman Warning or Probation, or have any problems or concerns they want to discuss.

FINANCIAL AID
Financial Aid is available to FAU degree-seeking students and includes grants, loans, scholarships, and employment opportunities. Students may file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSAÂŽ) beginning October 1st of their high school senior year at studentaid.ed.gov. (FAU school code: 001481) The Student Financial Aid Office provides full service to students from application to award. Assistance is awarded in compliance with state, federal, and university regulations on the basis of financial need and academic merit. Additionally, the Financial Aid Office staff can assist students with questions regarding all aid and scholarship programs. Financial
14
aid regulations require that students maintain satisfactory academic progress. If they do not, they may be placed on probation or denied future assistance. For more detailed information, please refer to our Financial Aid website at fau.edu/finaid.

FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) sets out requirements designed to protect the privacy of students and parents. The law requires Florida Atlantic University to provide parents with access to their dependent child’s educational records. Independent students who are currently or formerly enrolled at FAU are protected. This means that nondirectory information may not be disclosed except under specific exemptions. The student’s consent is NOT required to disclose information to Florida Atlantic University faculty, staff, and administrators with a legitimate educational interest, parents of a dependent student (the parents claim the student with the IRS), financial aid processors, a judicial order or subpoena, or in a health or safety emergency. Florida Atlantic University may disclose what is known as “directory information” on a student without violating FERPA. Directory
information includes a student’s name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, major, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received, status (full-time, half-time, etc.), and a recent previous school attended.
So, what does this mean for you? Florida Atlantic University cannot discuss your child’s records unless we have a FERPA waiver signed by the student or unless a parent claims their child as a dependent on their most recent year’s federal tax return (a copy of the tax return will be required to verify this condition). For more information about FERPA, please contact the Office of the Registrar at 561.297.3050. To download the form, visit fau.edu/registrar/pdf/ UniversityFERPAWaiverForm3.pdf.

CAMPUS SAFETY AND SECURITY
Campus Police
The Florida Atlantic University Police Department provides a full range of public safety services 24 hours a day, seven days a week on the Boca Raton and Jupiter campuses. Police are also present during daytime hours on all other campuses. Our officers are fully trained professionals who are committed to assisting the FAU community in all of its public safety needs.
FAU has also developed an alert system to communicate official information during an emergency or crisis that disrupts the normal operation of FAU campuses or threatens the health and safety of members of the campus community. All students will be notified via FAU email, phone call, and text message. They will be informed as to what the situation is, who is involved, and when the issue has been resolved.
Emergency Information
Night Owls
Emergency and Information Posts are located throughout the school campus. These stations are near student residence halls, parking lots, garages, and other areas. At night, a bright blue light shines atop the yellow pole, making them easily visible from a distance. If your student ever feels they are in an emergency situation, a push of the station’s red button will prompt a response from the FAU Police Department. In 60 seconds or less, an officer will be there to help.
The Night Owls program is a student-run service that provides students with an extra measure of safety while getting around campus during evening hours. FAU students who need a ride to or from class, the library, residence halls, parking lots, or any other location on the Boca Raton campus can call the Night Owls for a free ride. Night Owls operates from 7 p.m.–1 a.m., Monday through Friday. To get a ride, students can call 561.297.6695.

AFFINITY GROUPS Florida Atlantic University Affinity Groups help Owls take flight into their first year of student success. Affinity Groups make it easier to meet new people, make friends, and form study groups while connecting through shared experiences and themed activities. With Affinity Groups, your student can benefit from an easy transition to FAU from the very start! Students who participate in Affinity Groups benefit from a shared course schedule with other Owls who have the same major or similar interests. This makes it easy to find study partners and meet like-minded friends. Students may even get connected to experts in
22
their fields of interest. Affinity Group members are also given the option to live together in one of FAU’s residence halls. More than 25 Affinity Groups are offered each year, giving your students a choice to fit any of their interests. Applications are available December 1st with a priority deadline of May 1st. Applications are available at fau.edu/studentsuccess/affinity-groups. For questions, please contact us at learningcommunity@fau.edu.

Q
I’m not happy with my student’s grades last semester. How can I help?
A
If your student did not do well in their last semester, please encourage them to speak to an academic advisor, especially if they need to retake a course. In order to complete their course requirements and graduate in a timely manner, it is necessary that they see their academic advisor once or even twice a semester at the minimum. Please encourage them to contact University Advising Services, 561.297.3064, SU 201. In addition, there are numerous services and workshops available to students to help them succeed! Encourage your son or daughter to form study groups, meet with faculty members during office hours, get tutoring, or take advantage of workshops from time or stress management to test taking and study tips. Contact the Center for Learning and Student Success (CLASS) at 561.297.0906 or stay@fau.edu.
Q
My student just tells me everything is “fine.” How can I get them to share more about their FAU experience?
A
Students often want to feel independent and therefore feel like their parent’s questions are prying or indicate a lack of trust in them. Of course, we all know this is not the case! During this phase in their lives, it’s important that you maintain open lines of communication with your child. We have found that asking open-ended questions can help. Some examples are: • “What is your most difficult class this semester, and how are you planning to do well in that course?” • “Tell me about an activity or program you’ve gone to.” • “What is your next assignment and when is it due? What is your plan to complete it?”
Q How can I connect with my student while they are attending FAU? A Call, send occasional emails and text messages, send them a care package, and let them
know you are proud of them! In addition, we encourage you to attend FAU Owl Family Weekend, which is usually held in early October. Owl Family Weekend will give you and your family an opportunity to attend an FAU sporting event with your Owl, and even attend classes with them. For more information on Owl Family Weekend, please contact the Office of Family Engagement at 561.297.2733 or visit their website at fau.edu/family. Florida Atlantic University

Q Should my son/daughter work while in school? A If your student is looking to work, we recommend an on-campus job. Working on campus
will help them meet people who can assist them when they have problems. Campus jobs are also more flexible than off-campus employment when it comes to accommodating work and course schedules. Part-time work also forces students to manage their time between classes, work, studying, and fun! To find a list of on-campus jobs, please encourage your student to visit the Student Employment Office. For more information on student employment visit fau.edu/hr/ Student_Employment.
Q
My student is having issues with a roommate. How should they handle this?
A
Students who are having problems with a roommate are encouraged to first speak to their roommate. If the problem cannot be resolved, then your student should speak to their Resident Assistant (RA). Often, issues are due to miscommunication and can be solved through a mediation session. If that does not work, the RA or Resident Coordinator might recommend a room change. Let’s try to work things out before we encourage them to pack up their things and move out. If your student feels they are in a dangerous situation, make sure they contact a Housing staff member or the University Police immediately! Contact the Boca Raton Housing Office at 561.297.2880.
Q
How can I encourage my student to get more involved in campus activities?
A
There’s always something going on at FAU. If your student is interested in getting involved in an FAU club or organization, or even considering starting their own, please encourage them to visit the Student Involvement website at fau.edu/involvement. This website includes the email address and website for each registered club and organization at FAU. Clubs are always looking to gain new members, so students should email the group president for additional information or upcoming event information. Most events are FREE and open to ALL FAU students. Encourage your student to find out about Campus Recreation, Greek Affairs, the Campus Volunteer Center, and Student Government. View the calendar of events at events.fau.edu/ mastercalendar/default.aspx.

Q What tutoring services are available for FAU students? A There are many options for free academic support available to all FAU students. Tutoring,
Math and Writing Labs, and Supplemental Instruction programs are all available for your student’s academic support. Tutoring is offered in small groups, and Supplemental Instruction sessions are peer-led study groups for students taking challenging courses. For more information visit fau.edu/class.
Q
My son/daughter has tried to contact their professor on numerous occasions. How can I help?
A
We encourage students to take an initiative in their academic success. Although your son or daughter may truly need and appreciate your help, it’s important that they learn the importance of problem solving and dealing with many issues on their own. Please encourage your son or daughter to not only call the professor, but also send them an email and visit them during their assigned office hours if they are having any problems. Office hours are typically included in every course syllabus and posted on the faculty member’s office door. What happens if your student is away from campus or home and doesn’t have access to a course syllabus? No worries! All they have to do is logon to fau.edu and click on “Faculty – Staff,” then “People Directory.” Once they type in their professor’s first and last name, they should be able to view the corresponding telephone number and email address. It also wouldn’t hurt if they left a message with the department’s administrative assistant. The administrative assistant may see the professor throughout the day and will remind them that a student is looking for them. Florida Atlantic University

RESIDENCIA UNIVERSITARIA
