WELCOM PARENTS & FAMILIES Welcome to the University of Michigan, and thank you for joining us on campus for Parents & Family Weekend 2019! Whether this is your student’s first year at Michigan or their last, Parents & Family Weekend has something for you. We hope you take full advantage of the wonderful activities on campus, and enjoy this special weekend with your student. By visiting campus this weekend, or at any time, you are providing a support network for your student that only you can provide. In fact, parents and family members play a vital role in the lives of college students. Many students 6
still count on their parents to remain a steady and stable source of support and guidance. Parents can serve as mentors, offering advice and encouragement, while also promoting independence, autonomy, and responsibility.

Want to get a work out in while you're on campus? Registration for Parents & Family Weekend will give you access to any of our three facilities during their open hours. Meal Passes for Residential Families
RHA (Residence Hall Association) would like to invite you and your residential student to have a meal on us. RHA, student government in the residence halls and apartments for undergraduate students, aims to create a strong and vibrant community in the university housing community. Have brunch, Saturday or Sunday, at any dining hall on us. We want to make it convenient and easy for you and your student(s). How did the Diag change from a pasture to the tree-covered expanse that it is today? Before the President’s House was the President’s House, what was it? Why is a plaque commemorating the admission of women located in Angell Hall? Trotter Multicultural Center, 428 S. State St. We welcome you to Trotter Multicultural Center’s Open House where you will have the opportunity to meet staff and tour the Center’s new building that opened in April 2019! The Trotter Multicultural Center was birthed out of the Black Action Movements and student activism from 1971 to current day. The Center serves as an iconic and programmatic symbol for all students, as an open and inclusive facility that fosters intercultural engagement and strengthens connections between and among communities, as a supportive home and environment to those committed to social justice and diversity, and as a space that celebrates the tradition and history of the Trotter Multicultural Center and the activism of students.

Ferry Field Tickets: $20 Our annual Parents & Family Weekend Tailgate is changing it up this year and will be located outside on Ferry Field, the site of U-M’s first football stadium! Stop by to enjoy some food on your way to the game. Menu is traditional tailgate fare including vegetarian and vegan options. This is a rain or shine and alcohol-free event. The Marching Band and student performance groups will NOT be featured this year due to location change.

Michigan Stadium, 1201 S. Main St. Tickets: $80 Come watch the Wolverines and head coach Jim Harbaugh battle the Hawkeyes. They’re playing your requests, along with some classics, while you enjoy a selection of appetizers and desserts. You may even get to be a part of the show! Washington St. Tickets: $10 The 2019 G-Fest will showcase the finest performance groups that proudly represent the diverse and remarkably talented student population at the University of Michigan. From a cappella to dance to improv comedy, it will be an entertaining night of various interpretations of performing art that allows visiting parents to see the amazing talent that abounds at Michigan and demonstrates the exciting opportunities available to the students in the realm of performance. The event will be hosted by The G-Men, the premier all-male a cappella group at the University of Michigan.

Grupo Corpo
Power Center, 121 Fletcher St. Tickets: $24 The phenomenal Brazilian dance company Grupo Corpo makes its third UMS appearance with a double bill of Bach and Gira, two wildly different works that showcase the 21-member group’s extraordinary range. In Gira, choreographer Rodrigo Pederneiras constructs a powerful glossary of gestures of praise and movement inspired by Afro-Brazilian religious rituals, set to music by the Brazilian fusion group Méta Méta. In Bach, the baroque world of Johann Sebastian Bach is made modern in a score by Marco Antônio Guimarães, with dancers in brilliant shades of gold, regal blue, and black dropping from a set of enormous organ pipes. Grupo Corpo delivers a dazzling celebration of Brazil in all its diversity. 28

Stay Connected
Support your student by staying connected. Communicate via phone, texting, social media, chat, Skype, email, and even good, oldfashioned “snail mail.” Students love to get real mail, especially care packages. Students may not respond to all of your contacts, but know they appreciate hearing from you.
Be Knowledgeable About Campus Resources
The M-Parent website (parents.umich.edu), the Parent Calendar & Handbook, and the Family Matters email newsletter (studentlife. umich.edu/parents) are three resources designed specifically for parents to provide you with information about the University and its departments. Helping your student to navigate a large university by referring them 34
to the appropriate resources is one of the best ways for you to mentor your college student during this transition to adulthood. By acting as a referral source, you can demonstrate you are interested in your student’s life at the University, and at the same time, you empower your student to solve their own problems, and you help to build their confidence by demonstrating you have confidence in them.
Continue to Have Meaningful Conversations
As a parent of a college student, the relationship with your child is going to transform as they gain more independence. However, you do still have a tremendous influence on your student’s behavior. In college, your student will have to make their own decisions including what time to get up in

the morning, when to study, when to exercise, whether or not to drink alcohol, and whether or not to engage in sexual relationships. While you cannot make your student behave exactly as you would want them to, parents can share their values and beliefs with their students on these issues. Studies show parents can positively influence their child’s behavior regarding alcohol and other drug use and sexual decision making even after their child leaves for college. Provide your student with the facts on these issues, and empower them to distinguish between healthy and harmful decisions when it comes to their behavior, health, and safety.
Ask Questions — But Not Too Many
Most first-year college students desire the security of knowing someone from home is still interested in them. Parental curiosity can be alienating or supportive depending on the attitudes of the persons involved. Honest inquiries and other “between friends” communication and discussion will do much to further the parent-student relationship.
Expect Change
Your student will change. College and the experiences associated with it can effect changes in social, vocational, and personal behavior and choices. It’s natural, inevitable, and it can be inspiring. Often though, it’s a pain in the neck. You can’t stop change, you may never understand it, but it is within your power (and to you and your student’s advantage) to accept it. Remember your student will be basically the same person you sent away to school.
Do Not Tell Your Student That “These Are the Best Years of Your Life”
College can be full of indecision, insecurities, disappointments, and most of all, mistakes. It’s also full of discovery, inspiration, good times, and exciting people. It may take a while for students to realize that their Hollywood/ social media-created images of what college is all about are wrong. These images don’t show that college is about being scared, confused, overwhelmed, and making mistakes. Students may feel these things and worry that they are not ‘normal’ because what they’re feeling is in contrast to what they’ve been led to believe while growing up. Parents can help by understanding the highs and lows of college life are a critical part of your student’s development, and by providing the support and encouragement to help them understand this as well.
Trust Your Student
College is also a time for students to discover who they are. Finding oneself is a difficult enough process without feeling the people whose opinions you respect most are secondguessing your own second-guessing.
