WELCOME TO THE OREGON TECH FAMILY! 4

www.collegiateparent.com/school/oregon-institute-of-technology

This is an exciting time for your student and for you, especially if this is your first to go off to college!

Please take some time to read the Oregon Tech (KF) Parent & Family Guide so you can familiarize yourself with all that we offer students. We take great pride in the relationships the faculty and staff develop with students, both in the classroom and out. You, too, have a role in your student’s success as a partner with us. Please remember, however, that college is all about learning self-advocacy and responsibility; let the student be accountable, while you provide the gentle guidance along the way. This guide provides descriptions of many services available to students to assist them in navigating the transition into college, to help them overcome the challenges they may face through their college experience, and to ultimately send them on with a degree in hand. The offices in the guide include: housing, dining, student health, campus life, academic success resources, and more. Please encourage your student to utilize the many resources available, and understand that we are here for students and you. The Student Affairs office is the “Go To” office when a student isn’t sure where else to go as we can direct the student to the appropriate office. My office provides other services for students, which can be viewed on our webpages. On behalf of the faculty and staff of Oregon Tech, I welcome your thoughts, suggestions, and concerns. I also hope to see you on campus, especially during Family Weekend (usually in November) and eventually at your student’s graduation!

Sincerely,

Erin

www.collegiateparent.com/school/oregon-institute-of-technology

The mission of the Oregon Tech Integrated Student Health Center (ISHC) is to enhance the overall health of students by providing treatment as well as tools which encourage them to be knowledgeable about/actively invested in the benefits of self-care and choosing well to achieve optimal levels of comprehensive wellness. The ISHC provides primary health care, counseling, and general wellness services and is staffed by a physician, an advanced practice nurse, a registered nurse, licensed professional counselors, and a health educator. ISHC contracts with a psychiatric nurse practitioner to bring additional services into the center. Students enrolled for six or more oncampus credit hours automatically pay the Student Health Fee, which allows them to meet with medical, counseling, and health promotion staff with no co-pay. Additional charges will be incurred for laboratory work, immunizations, or over-the-counter medications. Students taking fewer than six credits may still be eligible to access services through the ISHC and would need to contact the ISHC to opt in and pay the fee. It is important that parents be aware that state and federal confidentiality laws prevent the staff from disclosing any information about students who have received services at the ISHC. Although they cannot reveal any information about students who use the center’s services, the staff is willing to receive input from parents about their concerns.

Counseling Counseling services are provided in the ISHC with three full-time counselors on staff who are available to address issues commonly seen among college students as well as more advanced mental health concerns. Some of the most common issues seen in counseling include anxiety, depression, and relationship problems.

The Student Health Fee alows students to meet with medical, counseling, and health promotion staff with no co-pay.

MONEY MATTERS A Few Things to Keep in Mind:

Some Things to Remember:

The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) that is calculated by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application is used to determine eligibility for need-based financial aid. It is the amount that the Department of Education has estimated that you and your student can contribute to their education. Schools and scholarship providers may also use it to calculate need-based aid. It is not an amount that you are expected to pay out of pocket to the university. Cost of Attendance (COA) is an average estimated budget number that the financial aid office uses to estimate a student’s costs to attend Oregon Tech for the year. Costs may vary based on number of credits, major, and location. The Financial Aid Office does not specialize in the billing of student accounts; please contact the Cashier’s Office for all billing inquiries.

Students/Parents should file their FAFSA each year, on October 1 or as soon after as possible (some funds are limited), at fafsa.gov. Parents and students will use their prior, prior year income information in order to complete the form. It is highly recommend to use the IRS data retrieval tool. Also, please remind your students to respond promptly to all information requests sent by the Financial Aid Office. The Oregon Tech Foundation fall scholarship process opens in December every year. Students can apply at oit.edu/scholarships. Applications are due by March 1st for the next academic year.

While we enjoy the opportunity to assist you, due to federal regulations we cannot discuss your student’s file or account without written consent from the student. Your student can grant you proxy access for read-only information regarding transcripts, grades, tax information, registration, financial aid, etc.

18

Other: oit.edu/faid Students can find other scholarship opportunities at oit.edu/scholarships. Students can find information on financial literacy at: oit.edu/owls-worth.

STARTING STRONG, STAYING CONNECTED Attending college is an exciting experience, but it is also very challenging — even the most prepared student may find that they need additional support in order to succeed. The Advising and Retention Office at Oregon Tech helps students rise to the challenge through two campus-wide programs: The ROCK, and Owl2Owl texting. The ROCK seeks to help students navigate their first year at Oregon Tech, while Owl2Owl texting provides continued support throughout a student’s entire time on our campus. The ROCK is a professional advising center for all incoming Oregon Tech students. ROCK advisors meet with students individually to address a wide range of topics, including: • finding and using campus resources • understanding curriculum maps, transfer credits, and prerequisites • time management and effective study/learning strategies • social and emotional adaptation to college life

After their first year, freshmen will leave The ROCK and become part of Owl2Owl texting. The Owl2Owl texting program is offered to all students at Oregon Tech and provides students with a way to connect to their peers on campus via texting. Designated student mentors are always available to provide encouragement, important campus updates, and answers to individual questions. With Owl2Owl Texting, help is just a text away! For information about The ROCK, please contact us at (541) 851-5266 or ROCK@oit.edu. For information about Owl2Owl, please contact us at (541) 885-1276.

We coach them in best practices related to resumes, interviewing, and utilizing LinkedIn, among many other career topics.

www.collegiateparent.com/school/oregon-institute-of-technology

We host an employer portal that has hundreds of on-campus jobs, part-time jobs in the community, internships and full-time jobs. We also host six career fairs each year, and other events such as an Etiquette Dinner. Current students may access these opportunities by going to oit.joinhandshake.com and using their OIT email address to log in. Students are encouraged to make appointments with us to meet about any career-related topic. They may do so via Handshake by looking for Career Center at the top of the home page, then click on Appointments. Appointments are available on campus, by phone, or by video chat.

For information about career related topics, check out the Career Services website, oit.edu/career.

Disability Services Academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and physical campus modifications are provided to qualified students with a disability to support equal opportunity and access to any program, course, activity, or service offered by the University. An equal opportunity means an opportunity to attain the same level of performance or to enjoy equal benefits and privileges as are available to similarly-situated individuals without a disability.

Oregon Institute of Technology

21

Students can take advantage of a variety of hours and study opportunities including scheduled, drop-in, and group study sessions. Peer Consulting is for ALL students who wish to connect with their peers and faculty, and to cultivate effective study skills.

and quizzes in the Testing Center. Testing Services provides a secure, equitable, and professional environment to all students. Again, there are many resources for students at Oregon Tech. If you have any questions regarding any Student Success Center services, please contact the SSC at (541) 851-5179. You may also email us at ssc@oit.edu.

SSC Breakfast Club The Student Success Center (SSC) Breakfast Club is held the first Wednesday of each month during fall, winter, and spring terms. Thanks to the collaboration of Student Affairs departments and other sponsors, the SSC Breakfast Club is a great place for good food and lively conversation. These are very popular and a great way to connect with campus resources. Overall, there are many academic, personal support, and success resources available at Oregon Tech. We are here to support your student and assist them in their academic pursuits. Please contact the SSC for more information at (541) 851-5179 or ssc@oit.edu.

STUDENT PRIVACY AT OREGON TECH The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) gave you and your student the rights to access and review your student’s academic records in elementary through high school. Now that your student is attending Oregon Tech, FERPA rights transfer ownership of the records directly to the student.

Students attending college are considered adults and are given the right to determine who will receive any information regarding their academic records. While parents often have a vested interest in their student’s academic progress, written consent or proxy access is required in order to have access to a student’s records. Further information regarding FERPA can be found at oit.edu/registrar or by contacting the Registrar’s Office at (541) 885-1300 or at registrar@oit.edu.
