Dear incoming York College parents and families, Let us be one of the first of many to welcome you to the York College of Pennsylvania family! We were first introduced to York College when our daughter, Elexa, expressed interest because of the nursing program and soccer team. After campus visits, the family, especially Elexa, knew it was the “right fit” for her! With three children at different colleges, we can proudly say that York College is a unique and special community that brings out the best in its students, faculty, and staff. Throughout her college years, Elexa flourished academically, socially, and athletically. The affordability and quality of the York College experiences inside and outside the classroom exceeded our expectations. As parents, we remember the shift from being very excited about the process and decision to having many questions as the important transition approached. The York College Parent & Family Guide is an important resource designed to answer your questions about services, resources, and expectations. We hope it provides the details you need to feel confident and secure about your student’s decision to attend York College. It certainly helped our family. Share These Important Tips with Your Student: Entering college is like entering a new city — new people to meet, new lingo to learn, new challenges to face. Here are some tips on finding your way around our city of learners. Attend all classes. If you miss classes, it is like coming into a conversation in the middle. You won’t know how to join in. Get to know your professors. At York, we have small classes so that professors and students can learn from one another, both in and out of class. Make at least two friends in each class. And look for friends who want to talk about what you’re learning; that will help you to really understand, not just memorize. Also, friends help add a layer of accountability about going to class and staying on top of your work. Learn how to manage your time. Treat your studies like a job, show up on time, get your work done, and then enjoy the free time you’ve set aside. Get involved in at least one club. College isn’t just about classes; it’s about sharing activities with this community of other learners. York has more than 100 clubs and organizations. Trust us, there’s one for you. Use the services we’ve built into our community. If you are struggling in a class, visit the professional and peer tutors in the Academic Support Center. If you can’t decide on a major or potential career, take a walk to the Student Success Division Center, where you can have a conversation about your future — remember, your advisor is always there to help. Manage stress and anxiety. Transitioning from high school to this new community can be stressful, but a talk with the caring people in Counseling Services can help you manage when it feels like you can’t.

Access to My Student’s Records The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that affords students certain rights with respect to their educational records. 8

FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children’s education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. Students to whom the rights have transferred are “eligible students.” For additional information, refer to the College Catalog, which is the Registrar’s official breakdown of degree requirements and is available on our website.

Students and parents are encouraged to openly discuss matters of disclosure to establish a shared expectation of appropriate behavior. General directory information is distributed without prior consent of the student. Students who do not wish such information to be released or made public may inform the Admissions Office, if a new student, or the Records Office, if a returning student, in writing by Sept. 1 for the fall semester or Jan. 15 for the spring semester.

Developing a Personal Strategic Plan Student Success Division

Academic Advising

Through the Student Success Division, York provides academic and career development support to help your student turn their goals into achievements. Whether they need a tutor, help revising a paper, or tips to hone their study skills, York has it. We also connect students with employers, provide workshops on writing résumés and cover letters that get results, and teach them how to interview like a pro. In fact, 100 percent of qualified York students have the opportunity to take part in hands-on learning. The offices under the Student Success Division include Academic Advising, Academic Support Center, Career Development, Student Accessibility Services, Study Abroad Center, Undeclared Advising, and the Writing Center. This division also oversees the Community Scholarship Program which seeks to identify and prepare a group of York City youth as future business and professional leaders for the York community.

Academic Advising at York College is a faculty-based process in which all fulltime faculty, select adjunct faculty and administrators, and professional advisors in the Academic Advising Center provide academic advising to students. Each student is partnered with an advisor in his/ her major area of study.

Undeclared students are assigned a specially trained academic advisor and participate in York’s unique Explore 360 program. The program works with undeclared students to discover and target their academic strengths and interests, and explore possible major choices and career paths. Students have the support of a professional academic advisor and peer advisor to help guide them through the decision-making process. Academic advisors serve as a vital resource — they listen to students’ goals,

monitor their academic progress, offer suggestions for academic support, evaluate course schedules, and discuss academic preparation for careers. To facilitate this holistic planning process, all students at York College receive access and guidance through My Plan, containing many helpful resources for academic, career and co-curricular planning and goal setting. Each student is encouraged to meet regularly with his/her advisor to discuss the development and implementation of his/her individual My Plan. While Academic Advising assists students in their academic planning, it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to meet the academic requirements for graduation.

Staff guides students through the process of exploring academic and career directions, identifying and securing

The Center’s Plan To Succeed program encourages all students to personalize their own academic and career plans during their York College experience. Through the program, they are guided to engage, explore, experience, and emerge as professionals in their chosen field or discipline. Career Development actively partners with academic and campus departments and employers to provide integrated career and professional development to all students. Spartan Career Path provides students with around-the-clock access to job, internship and on-campus student employment postings, event information, job and internship fairs, appointment scheduling, a comprehensive document library, and more. The Center encourages skill development including self-assessment, job search skills, and preparation for life after college, which students will use throughout their lives. The services, resources, and events available through the Career Development Center are designed to empower students to be active participants in their own career development and life planning.

The Academic Support Center (ASC) helps students become engaged learners who achieve academic success. The ASC staff, consisting of both peer and professional tutors, offers a variety of academic support services that provide students with the opportunity to learn in a supportive environment. The ASC offers: •

Writing assistance for assignments in every course.

Math tutoring for all levels.

Academic skills coaching.

Tutoring services for courses in a variety of disciplines.

Study groups, workshops, and review sessions.

Students may schedule an appointment at the ASC or view student group and tutoring schedules through the MyYCP portal.

The Library and Technology Services Department supports: •

Over 40 computer labs on campus, including eight general-purpose labs and 35+ specialty labs that offer over 1,000 up-to-date computers.

130 smart classrooms that use projection systems, multimedia equipment, and the Internet to complement the learning process.

Full network and Internet access, cable TV with an expanded lineup, including HBO and HD digital channel offerings, and local telephone service in all residence hall rooms.

Numerous hot spots for Wi-Fi wireless connectivity around campus, including all residence facilities.

LTS Support is available to answer any technology-related questions and to assist students in connecting their computer to the College network.

The York College portal (my.ycp.edu) is a central web area where students may access email, campus and group announcements, courses, their personal calendar, student accounts, register and drop/add classes (matriculated students only), and much more. Need help? Start a support ticket by emailing LTShelp@ycp.edu.

The Library’s web page (library.ycp.edu) is a portal to thousands of electronic books and journals as well as to databases that access millions of articles. Students can obtain material from other libraries at no charge through our Interlibrary Loan service. Research librarians provide expert assistance with course assignments, from short reports to term papers, in all disciplines.

Schmidt Library provides a dynamic learning environment that contributes to students’ academic success. Group study rooms, welcome lounge seating, and individual carrels for quiet study are an alternative to dorm rooms or computer labs. State-of-the art technology includes laptops for use on the York College wireless network, digital cameras, scanners, digital plotter, and digital projection for presentations. The Library has over 150,000 books as well as CDs, DVDs, popular magazines, newspapers, and books for recreational reading.

Discovering the Campus Community The York College community includes students who live at home locally and commute to campus, live in residence halls on campus, and live in other campus housing. Residence Life

Location: Iosue Student Union Phone: 717.815.1281 The Residence Life program provides a comfortable, safe living environment that’s focused on supporting academic success, individual growth, and group interaction and development. York College is a four-year residential college. All freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors are required to live on campus, unless they are enrolled as a commuting student. At York, commuters are those students who reside in the home of their parents/guardians within a 35-mile radius of the York College campus, or are over the age of 22. Within the residence halls, Residence Life staff (professional staff members called Area Coordinators and student leaders known as Resident Assistants) work as a team to manage the facilities and to provide programming geared toward students’ intellectual,

physical, social, cultural, and professional development. Freshmen are typically placed in traditional or suite-style living, and Resident Assistants are trained to help freshmen become acclimated to college life. Students are members of their residence hall community, the College’s academic and civil community, and the surrounding community. They have the rights, duties, and obligations associated with being a citizen in these communities. The College’s disciplinary process is an educational one, designed to encourage and promote the process of self-discipline. Disciplinary action can be taken against students for misconduct/incidents while on or off campus. This includes misconduct that is a violation of College standards, regulations, or the law, and is detrimental to the College’s lawful mission and interests.

Commuter Students Students whose permanent residence is within the local area can choose to commute from home. These students make up approximately 35 percent of the York College student body and are an important part of our campus community. The College provides a variety of resources for students who regularly come and go from campus including: •

Commuter lounge in the Student Union.

Current commuter students note that becoming involved with campus life in their first semesters was an important part of their success: •

Get to know your professors outside of class.

And, of course, the MyYCP student portal, campus website, and official social media pages are essential resources to know what’s happening throughout the York College community. In fact, students know that following the campus Twitter account, @yorkcollegepa, is a great way to find out about campus closures, road restrictions, activities, and more (the account will absolutely respond to questions too). Various types of public transportation options are available to students:

Transportation The York College campus, which spans approximately 190 acres, consists of Main Campus, West Campus, and North Campus. Although these areas are within two to three blocks of each other, campus shuttle service is available to transport students between them. Shuttle pickup locations are centrally located, with three stops on Main Campus and five stops on West Campus. Students are permitted to have motor vehicles on campus, with certain parking restrictions in place. Students who operate a vehicle on campus must register with the Department of Campus Safety within two business days of the vehicle’s arrival on campus. A valid parking permit must be purchased and displayed in vehicles parked on campus. Parking permits are valid from September to August and are renewed at the beginning of each academic year in September.

Rabbittransit – public bus system of 12 routes serving York and surrounding suburbs.

Regional Amtrak services – stations in Harrisburg, Pa., Lancaster, Pa., and Baltimore, Md.

Airports – 40 miles to Harrisburg International Airport (MDT) and 65 miles to Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI).

Bus – York Capitol Greyhound Bus Station is located in downtown York.

Weekend Shuttles – Campus shuttles take scheduled trips every weekend to local shopping centers, movie theaters, grocery stores, etc. This is free of charge to all YCP students.

Getting Involved on Campus Student Activities and Orientation

Location: Iosue Student Union Phone: 717.815.1239 The Office of Student Activities and Orientation (OSAO) creates a safe and caring environment in which student growth is enhanced through a variety of opportunities and experiences. The Office creates opportunities for student participation and leadership through its volunteerism efforts, orientation programs, and work with more than 100 clubs, organizations, Greek Life, Student Senate, Campus Activities Board (CAB), and the Leadership Series. Partnering with students and student organizations, OSAO plans and

implements programs for smaller groups on campus as well as for the entire student population. From comedians to major concerts, to Midnight Madness, to leadership sessions, to Relay for Life, these collaborative efforts between students and professionals contribute to the liberal arts mission of the College. The OSAO is a good place for students to find out what’s going on at York College and how to get involved. And in the rare instance they don’t find something that fits their interests, OSAO will show students how to start their own club. To get students engaged from day one, an Involvement Fair is held on the Main Campus during the first few weeks of class so first-year students can sign up for clubs and organizations right away.

The Spartan coaching staff welcomes inquiries from prospective studentathletes. Additionally, while Division III athletics offer a greater opportunity for participation, competition for existing roster spots is intense.

York College provides a quality athletic program for men and women on 23 intercollegiate athletic teams. With an emphasis on participation, quality competition, and academic integrity, York coaches expect student-athletes on their squads to exemplify academic and athletic excellence. York is an NCAA Division III member institution; therefore, it awards financial aid based on need only. The Spartans compete with some of the best Division III schools in the country, with much of this top-flight competition coming from its own Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC).

The Spartan program makes its home in Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center (GSFC), a 160,000-square-foot, stateof-the-art facility. The complex serves as the destination for virtually all of the intercollegiate, recreation, and fitnessrelated activities on campus. At the GSFC, the College offers a robust campus recreation program with numerous club and intramural sports opportunities. While intramural sports focus on peerversus-peer competition, club sports offer students the chance to compete against other two- and four-year institutions in a less demanding environment than varsity programs. The GSFC also serves many recreational enthusiasts, who work out in the fitness center, swim laps in the natatorium, shoot hoops in the field house, or find a route to the top of the climbing wall. The GSFC has extended hours to help accommodate a variety of schedules throughout the semester as well as limited hours during breaks.

The Intercultural Student Life and Global Programming Office provides educational and social programs related to diversity and multiculturalism for the campus community. These programs enrich the overall educational experience and assist with creating an inclusive environment, leading to the holistic development of students. The Intercultural Student Life and Global Programming Office also works closely with international students and exchange students, assisting with acclimation and transition to York College life, the York community, and American society. In support of this mission, the Intercultural Student Life and Global Programming Office is actively involved with the following campus organizations:

Newman Club – known as Catholic Campus Ministry.

Hillel – national organization that offers spiritual guidance and activities to students of the Jewish faith.

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship – students, faculty, and staff who gather to meet and be renewed by Jesus.

Council on Spiritual Life – composed of the campus chaplains, the coordinator of Spiritual Life, and representatives of the administration, faculty, and student body.

Young Life (National Christian Organization) – student-led Christian organization.

Staying Safe and Healthy Campus Safety

Location: Manor Northeast Phone: 717.815.1314 The Department of Campus Safety creates a safe and secure educational environment at York College. The Department operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with officers — both professional and student — patrolling the campus on foot, bicycles, Segways, and in vehicles. Officers respond to calls for service and assistance; enforce college policies, traffic, and parking regulations; and investigate all reported criminal activity. A 24-hour-a-day escort program for students to all campus locations is available. In addition, the Department operates the Campus Shuttle system that transports students throughout Main, North, and West campuses. Campus Safety also provides comprehensive crime prevention and education programs for the College community, which include the new student safety orientation, Rape Aggression Defense, Self-Defense Awareness, and Familiarization Exchange classes. In addition, the Department publishes an annual security report that includes crime statistics and security policy statements in compliance with the Clery Act.

York College ID Card The Department of Campus Safety coordinates the York College ID card system. Students are expected to have their ID cards with them at all times. In addition to providing appropriate identification, the card provides entrance into residence halls and other campus facilities. York College’s ID card also serves as the “Flex Card” with debit-card capabilities. The card may be used for purchases in the Bookstore, dining services, vending and laundry locations, computer lab printing, postal center, Schmidt Library, digital copier services, and several off-campus vendors.

Counseling Services

Location: Iosue Student Union Phone: 717.815.6437 Counseling Services offers the following free, confidential services for York College students:

Health Services is open from 8:30 a.m.– 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The staff are all RNs. There is a nominal charge for some services; please see the “Health Services” web page for details: ycp.edu/health-services. Other charges may apply and are subject to student insurance guidelines if specimens are sent to outside facilities. Parents should talk with their students about how to get their health care needs met. Providing them with their own insurance card, explaining whether prior authorization is needed, and having them know what hospitals, laboratories, pharmacies, and specialists in the York area are participating with their insurance is very helpful. In addition, sending basic supplies for self-care (such as a thermometer, Motrin or Tylenol, BandAids, decongestants, etc.) can help students adjust to having to care for some common ailments.

Throughout a student’s experiences in higher education, they will face many natural, developmental concerns, including meeting new people, forming relationships, experiencing new levels of freedom and responsibility, and furthering identity development. Professional counselors are available to assist students with these issues. Sometimes more difficult mental health and wellness issues arise. Normally these problems are relatively temporary and students recover fairly quickly. However, if the intensity or persistence of any problems makes it hard for your student to function effectively, or if your student is experiencing suicidal thoughts or feelings, we recommend encouraging them to access Counseling Services right away. Parents may call or visit Counseling Services for inquiries and/or guidance pertaining to a student concern. Although referrals are welcome, we have found that it usually works best to support the student in taking the initiative to access our services themselves. All records pertaining to students are maintained according to American Counseling Association ethical guidelines.
