MTSU Celebrates Ten Years of the Student Union Building

Ten years ago, the MTSU community eagerly anticipated the opening of the Student Union Building. Prior to the 2012 opening, the hope for the three-story, 211,000-square-foot facility was to become a central place for students, faculty, and staff to come together, discover ways to get involved on campus, and enjoy their community.

The building has something different for students to experience on each floor. Whether students are gathering in their favorite lounge to study, catching a movie, or having dinner with friends, the Student Union Building continues to be the center of campus life at MTSU. While the building itself is impressive, it is not only the design or amenities offered that make the Student Union the heart of campus. “Our students impact this university in ways large and small that go well beyond the time the students are enrolled with us,”

said Dr. Sells, Vice President for Student Affairs and Vice Provost for Enrollment and Academic Services. “The Student Union is one of my favorite examples of students having a lasting impact on their campus.” Dr. Sells continued by saying, “We always tell our young people that their choice of where to go to college will change the course of their lives. What we forget to tell them is that their choice of where to go to college will also change that institution. Students years ago recognized a need, and even knowing that the building wouldn’t be complete until after they were graduated and gone, they took concrete action to fill that need.” Ten years later, MTSU celebrates the Student Union as a place that started with a vision to serve students and is now the center of campus life. “The Student Union is such an awesome space for so many students to enjoy,” said Jules Mayes, a senior majoring in Child Development and Family Studies. “You can always find me at the outside dining deck when the weather gets warm! It’s a great place to enjoy lunch with friends and have a beautiful view of campus.” If your student is looking for a place to belong at MTSU, the Student Union is a great place to start. Whether they join or start their own organization, enjoy an event by Student Programming and Raider Entertainment (S.P.A.R.E), or discover opportunities to volunteer within the greater Murfreesboro community, your student will be part of the next generation of students to create lasting change. We are grateful for the opportunity to witness all that is to come through the Class of 2026!
