Wonder Filled Summer

Collegiate School SUMMER QUEST 2024 MORE THAN

Collegiate loves summer because summer means camps and boy do we have camps! Summer Quest is once again offering to the Greater Richmond community more than 200 camps from which to choose. Best of all, we offer what busy families need over the summer — morning, afternoon and full day camp options for all ages, all summer long. Please take the time to peruse this brochure, as there are many changes, including the camp reservation policy, refund policy, last date for changes and, best of all, new camp offerings. This year, we have also changed the order of the brochure to make it easier to find camps by age. Every summer, our campers experience the joy of learning and growing without even knowing it. Fun is the name of the game in Summer Quest. Whether your child is coding, paddling, kicking or solving math problems, the opportunity to interact with Collegiate teachers, coaches and other professional partners makes for a great summer experience. We hope to see your children this summer at Summer Quest.

MANY CAMPS FILL TO THEIR MAXIMUM ENROLLMENT. REGISTER EARLY TO RESERVE YOUR SPACE. The Summer Quest Office is located in Luck Hall on the Lower School Campus. Summer Quest office hours are 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday–Friday. Collegiate School will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5.

WHY SUMMER QUEST CAMPS? Summer Quest offers a variety of camp options: either morning or afternoon half-day camps as well as all-day camps. We also offer before and after camp programs as well as the option to eat in our beautiful cafeteria. We offer more than 200 camps for children of all ages. We welcome children not only from Collegiate but from schools all over Richmond. We bring only the best to teach our camps, whether it be Collegiate faculty, staff and coaches or teachers from area schools and experienced vendor-partners. Our camper-to-staff ratios ensure our campers receive extra attention. Our beautiful campuses include the main campus on Mooreland Road as well as the Robins‘ campus on Blair Road and the Collegiate School Aquatics Center off Ironbridge Road. We are easily accessible from anywhere in Richmond (see page 64 for directions). With over 1,700 campers attending Summer Quest last summer, we truly are Richmond’s choice for a great camp experience!

NEW! REGISTRATION, PAYMENT AND REFUND INFORMATION

Summer Quest welcomes all families interested in our programs; however, we recognize that some children require more support than we are able to provide. For that reason, we reserve the right after enrollment to recommend that your child be removed from a program should we not be able to provide the required resources. If that is the case, a full refund will be issued. We encourage you to contact the Summer Quest office at 804.665.1750 to discuss your child’s individual needs prior to registration.

DEPOSITS AND REFUNDS: The 50% per camp deposit is nonrefundable unless a camp is cancelled by Summer Quest. From Jan. 31 to May 15, should your registration change, your 50% per program deposit is not transferable towards another Summer Quest program in summer 2024. During this time should you choose to cancel your registration you can receive a refund, minus the 50% deposit if you paid your camp in full.

BEHAVIOR POLICY: Tuition is not refunded or prorated for part-time attendance, including situations such as a participant’s dismissal because of a disciplinary action. Collegiate’s discipline policy: The School does not tolerate verbal or physical behavior that constitutes bullying (including cyberbullying), bias, harassment, discrimination, hazing, racial discrimination, sexual assault and sexual harassment of any kind (collectively referred to as “interpersonal misconduct”). The School is also committed to promptly addressing any behavior that interferes with the learning or social/emotional experience of any member of the School community. First offense: Office referral Second offense: Leave for the day Third offense: Dismissed for the week

REGISTRATION CHANGES AND CANCELLATIONS AFTER MAY 15TH: If a participant chooses to change his or her registration, a notice must be written and sent to summerquest@collegiateva.org, two weeks prior to the start of camp. The two-week notice will qualify the participant for a payment voucher, minus the deposit, that must be used during Summer Quest 2024. If a two-week notice is not sent, no payment voucher will be issued. The camp credit cannot be transferred to next year. Registrations submitted must include tuition paid in full. If the full amount due is not received by May 15, the space will be given to the next person on the waiting list. No refunds will be issued after the May 15 deadline regardless of circumstance.

Summer Quest

COUGAR CLUB Enrichment

Cougar Club is our traditional day camp experience with rotating themes and activities. Cougar Club provides the perfect balance between indoor and outdoor activities, such as arts and crafts, physical play, imaginative exploration and more! Our goal, under the guidance of Collegiate fulltime teachers, the Quest team and some friends from our local community, is to provide a comprehensive experience for campers of all ages who have a wide range of interests. Campers will have the daily opportunity to enjoy specific resources - whether it be art projects, sports, science experiments and other fun adventures. This little-bit-ofeverything approach makes for great summer memories that will last a lifetime.

The Quest Team Cougar Club will be run by both Collegiate’s fabulous teachers and the year-round Quest after-school team. Our teachers and Quest staff members have years of experience engaging with students and campers which will make for a great full-day camp experience.

SESSION THEMES Bugs, Insects and Everything Creepy Crawly! Session I – June 17-21

Shark Week Session IV – July 15-19

No camp on Wednesday, June 19

Do you love sharks? We do! Come and dive with us under the sea and swim with the sharks in our pretend ocean.

Discover the creatures that live outside! Help our pretend bees make honey, build your own bug, learn all about earthworms and more. This will be a funfilled week investigating our creepy crawly friends.

Summer Olympics Session V – July 29-Aug. 2

Building is fun, tangible and part of our everyday experience. This camp teaches kids about the built environment by exploring science, technology, engineering, art and math through handson activities designed to encourage creative, outside-the-box thinking. Architecture helps with visual learning, observation, reasoning and critical thinking. The camp will engage children physically and mentally as they use their imaginations and become designers for a week. We will design floor plans and build a miniature neighborhood, take a look at structural concepts by creating 3-D toothpick pyramids, prisms, domes and polyhedrons. Campers will learn about the physics of creating sound structures by building KEVA Plank towers that stand on strong foundations. They will explore how to balance load by constructing cantilever bridges. Each camper will also investigate the properties of varied building materials and create their own custom concrete aggregate followed up by a drop test. Finally, all campers will work together to create a large-scale geodesic dome. We will work as individuals and in groups to look at real-life problems and simplified versions of what architects do each day. This camp is ideal for children who like to create, draw and build – children who aren’t afraid to be original, take risks, explore new ideas and even get a little messy! Frank Becker is the Lower School STEAM coordinator and engineering teacher at Collegiate School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Virginia Commonwealth University and a master’s degree in instructional technology from the University of Virginia. This is Frank’s 26th year at Collegiate. Tyler Boyd has been at Collegiate since 2006. NEW! LITTLE SCHOLARS Rising Junior Kindergartners – rising Kindergartners

Enrichment Enrichment

Little Scholars was founded in 2006 and builds on founder Stephanie Jefferson’s belief that learning is most effective when done through play. In fact, while working with the Virginia Preschool Initiative Program, she helped develop the Learning Experience through Active Play (L.E.A.P.), a pilot focused on developmentally appropriate preschool enrichment activities. While taking time off from the classroom to raise her children, Stephanie was approached by a friend about assessing her son’s kindergarten readiness. Word spread about a fine motor skills class in her home that she’d created and, before long, Stephanie had launched Little Scholars to bring her unique curriculum approach to life through a commitment to integrity, innovative spirit, valued relationships and passion for learning and education. Today, Little Scholars works with children in preschool through 12th Grade at schools across the U.S. to provide after-school enrichment programs, summer camps and tutoring.

Join local singer/songwriter (and Spanish educator) Emily Roig for this music appreciation camp! In this camp, we will listen to and share the music, bands and singers that we love to listen to and discuss what music is, learn about differing approaches to songwriting and the creative process, discover and discuss the components of a well-written song and play around with music production software and recording. All you need to bring is a curious spirit and an ability to collaborate and work well with others. By the end of the week, we’ll have a deeper appreciation for music, songwriters and hopefully some musical creations to share Emily is a soulful folk singer-songwriter and worship leader originally from St. Louis, Missouri. Emily spent three years honing her songwriting skills in Nashville, Tennessee, where she wore many hats in the music business and released a variety of musical projects, including the awardwinning single "Skin.” From there, she heeded the call to move to Richmond, Virginia, where she spent four years on staff at Hope Church as a worship leader and songwriter and released multiple projects, including her latest single "You Are Loved." As a middle school librarian at Collegiate, Ms. Clements manages the Reed-Gumenick Library makerspace and enjoys helping students bring their ideas to life. Currently, she is fascinated by all things textiles and wants to learn more about quilting. Ms. Clements holds a B.A. in English and art history from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a M.S. in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. When she is not making art, Teresa Coleman is daydreaming about it and wondering what she might create next. Most art media and techniques are fair game, but drawing, painting, sewing, printing and working with clay vie as favorites. As a Collegiate Middle School art teacher for the past 11 years, Mrs. Coleman has had the chance to dabble in these and other media with her students. She believes Students are the Artists and that their art should be authentic and meaningful. In Fiction Workshop, students will be introduced to a range of strategies and styles for writing creative contemporary fiction. We will read several short stories and a novel. We will also screen several TV shows and films, examining the “tricks of the trade” for writers working in these visual media. You will have the opportunity to “pitch,” write, share and revise a substantive original novella, series of stories, screenplay or teleplay. If you’re interested in creative expression and mass media, this could be a delightful way to spend part of your summer. Dr. Bart Thornton chaired the English department for seven years at Collegiate School, where he now serves as dean of faculty. He teaches American literature, Russian literature, Postmodernism and an interdisciplinary course called Anarchy and the Avant-Garde.

Qualified Collegiate students who have earned an A- average or better in their last two semesters of English — may take this elective for Honors credit. However, this will require additional independent reading and writing.

SATIRE Vlastik Svab Rising 11th Graders – rising 12th Graders July 8 – Aug. 2 • 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Monday – Friday $1,095 Comedian Lewis Black describes fundamentalism as “the inability to laugh at yourself.” Dave Barry defines a sense of humor as “a measurement of the extent to which we realize that we are trapped in a world almost totally devoid of reason. Laughter is how we express the anxiety we feel at this knowledge.” Satire comes in many forms: printed word, image and modern visual media. Scholars, journalists and artists have been mocking social norms and human folly since ancient Greece and this course will continue the tradition of recognizing the hypocrisies and vices of human society. Notable satirists, including Jonathan Swift, Mark Twain, Edith Wharton, Aristophanes, David Sedaris and Joseph Heller, are just a few of the masters of wit and acerbic sarcasm who are both smarter and funnier than you. Vlastik Svab has taught Upper School English at Collegiate for 12 years. Previously, he taught honors and AP English at Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans, Louisiana.

THE FINE ART OF ANARCHY

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, novelists, screenwriters, TV writers and visual artists often practiced the arts of trickery and deception. Because there are so many options for entertainment, creative types attempt to surprise, startle and amuse their audiences. They combine previously distinct genres - horror and comedy, for instance or irreverent sitcoms and hackneyed Hallmark Channel programming - and generally create a kind of healthy havoc. In this course, we will read recent novels and plays, watch scripted and reality TV shows, analyze mainstream and independent films and listen to a variety of musical forms from 1970s punk-rock to this year's hottest singers and bands. Students will have the opportunity to research and share their own passions for graphic novels, internet rabbit holes, binge-worthy streaming episodes ("Stranger Things", anyone?) and much more. They will also have the chance to see what was considered distasteful and inappropriate in more "dainty decades" (like the 1950s and 1960s). Dr. Bart Thornton chaired the English department for seven years at Collegiate School, where he now serves as dean of faculty. He teaches American literature, Russian literature, Postmodernism and an interdisciplinary course called Anarchy and the Avant-Garde. Previously, he taught at independent schools in Houston and Chicago. In addition to holding a doctorate in English from the University of Texas at Austin, he writes novels and screenplays.
