Collegiate Summer Quest 2012 Welcome to our 40th year of offering summer programs to the community. Our beautiful campuses provide the perfect setting for a wide variety of programs ranging from academics, arts, and enrichment to sports and much more! With 40 years experience, Summer Quest knows what it takes to create summer memories that last a lifetime.

Many camps fill to their maximum enrollment; so register early to reserve your space! The Summer Quest Office is located in Luck Hall, Room 115 on the Lower School Campus. Summer Quest office hours are 8:00 am – 3:00 pm, Monday – Friday. Collegiate School will be closed on Wednesday, July 4th. Summer Quest

Academics

Upper School

Upper School courses completed by Collegiate Middle School students may be taken for advancement, but will not be credited toward graduation requirements or used in the calculation of a student’s GPA. However, these courses will be recorded on the student’s transcript. All classes meet Monday through Friday, unless otherwise noted. Though the pacing will differ, course content and academic demands will remain consistent with the semester-long versions of these electives. Students will earn the same ½ credit they would have earned for taking the course in the fall or spring. These courses will also be open to non-Collegiate students seeking summer enrichment opportunities.

A Collegiate student who misses two or more classes in a four week-long Summer Quest academic course may typically not receive academic credit for that course.

For Credit Classes 20th Century History Brian Justice, Brad Cooke Rising 10th – Rising 12th Graders July 2 – July 27 • 8:00 am – 12:30 pm Monday – Friday No class on Wednesday, July 4th $1,095 This is a required course for 10th graders at Collegiate. Modern World History 9 is a prerequisite for taking this class. Students will use the 9th grade text, The Heritage of World Civilizations. This ½ credit course includes the study of World War I, World War II, the rise of Communism, the rise of Fascism, the Holocaust, the Cold War, Decolonization, the Vietnam War, Watergate, the Reagan Revolution, and present-day China’s impact on the world. This course encourages student participation in a lecture style format. In addition, students will research and write a term paper on an approved topic. Brian Justice began teaching in 1992, and he has taught religion and history at Collegiate School since 1996. He has taught and coached with Summer Quest since 1996. Brad Cooke is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute. He is entering his 2nd year at Collegiate and his 14th year as a teacher. He has taught in schools in Virginia, Tennessee, and Colorado. Brad looks forward to his second summer teaching 20th Century History. For more information, contact the Summer Quest office at summerquest@collegiate-va.org.

“ The camps we participated in were very well thought out and the instructors were wonderful! Thank you for offering such a variety of exciting camps!”

NEW!

English Classes While a Collegiate student may take more than one ½ credit English elective during the summer session, only one per year may be substituted for an academic-year semester course. Regardless of summer elective work, every student must have at least one English course at Collegiate School during their junior and senior years.

Literature and Film Classics Mil Norman-Risch Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders June 11 – July 6 • 9:00 am – 1:30 pm Monday – Friday No class on Wednesday, July 4th $1,095 This course presents literary and film “classics” and proposes that the presence of structural design and complexity is what makes a work of art “great” or “worthy.” The “great works” we read and examine – through discussion, quizzes, projects, and papers – are Shakespeare’s Hamlet, T.S. Eliot’s poetry, short stories by William Faulkner and James Joyce, Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, Sergei Eisenstein’s “Odessa Steps” sequence from Battleship Potemkin, Carl Dreyer’s 1928 film, The Passion of Joan, Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, and Frances Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. Expect to distinguish moments of virtuosity and craft – and moral significance – as you become more aware of an artist’s use of compositional technique. Mil Norman-Risch has taught English in the Collegiate Upper School since 1988. She has written and published poetry, essays, textbooks and fiction and has received numerous awards. For more information, contact Mil Norman-Risch at mnormanr@collegiate-va.org.

Fiction Workshop Dr. Bart Thornton Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders June 11 – July 6 • 9:00 am – 1:30 pm Monday – Friday No class on Wednesday, July 4th $1,095 Designed for students who have shown an aptitude for creative writing and thought, Fiction Workshop focuses on contemporary literature and fiction writing. In some ways the class will resemble the prototypical English class: you will read, discuss, and write about the material you have read. On the other hand, the vast majority of work you produce will be creative rather than critical. By course’s end, you will have written three strong stories and a compelling novella (several chapters in length). This work – presented in an “anthology” along with some of your favorite pieces by your peers – will serve as a testament to your originality and diligence as a fiction writer and editor. For the past five years, Dr. Bart Thornton has chaired the English Department at Collegiate School, where he teaches American literature, Russian literature, Fiction, and an interdisciplinary course called “Anarchy and the Avant-Garde.” Previously, he taught at independent schools in Houston and Chicago. In addition to holding a doctorate in English from the University of Texas at Austin, he writes novels and screenplays. For more information, contact Dr. Bart Thornton at bthornton@collegiate-va.org.

Poetry Workshop Pete Follansbee Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders July 9 – August 3 • 9:00 am – 1:30 pm Monday – Friday $1,095 In Poetry Workshop, you are the writer, as you learn how to generate, refine, and polish your original pieces by working in free verse, prose poetry, and surrealistic poetry, as well as in form, pattern, and meter. You will stretch your writing limits, but also discover your own style and voice, through both composing and critique.

11

“ The class was perfect, and I feel more confident than ever.”

With your classmates, you will also go on a field trip to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to write a poem in dialogue with a favorite work of art. You will draft, critique, and revise, as you compile your work in an actual and an online portfolio. Among other culminating “events” will be a class reading and the christening of your own poetry website with recordings of your readings of your semester’s work. Throughout the course, to spur and inspire your writing, you will read poets such as Walt Whitman, Elizabeth Bishop, and Billy Collins; formalists such as Richard Wilbur and Donald Justice; and surrealists such as James Tate, Russell Edson, and John Ashbery. Pete Follansbee teaches English 10, Science Nature Spirit Soul, and Poetry Workshop at Collegiate School. He holds a B.A. in English from Hamilton College in upstate New York and an MFA in poetry from The University of Iowa Writers Workshop. His most recent publication was in The Georgetown Review, Spring 2009. For more information, contact Pete Follansbee at pfollansbee@collegiate-va.org.

Students will study nutrition related to current events, how nutrition relates directly to health, the nutrition tools that are available on a daily basis and how the digestive and immune systems work. We will also examine the main food nutrients such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water. Participants will be able to plan a healthy diet and explain how food and fitness relate directly to energy and a healthy body. For more information, contact Mark Palyo at mpalyo@collegiate-va.org.

Dr. Bart Thornton Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders July 9 – August 3 • 11:30 am – 4:00 pm Monday – Friday $1,095 In the years after World War II, a newly empowered group of English writers, intellectuals, filmmakers, and musicians gave voice to the nation’s sadness and rage. These artists crafted narratives with an anarchic energy, fueled by a desire to create new modes of expression. In addition to addressing a radically changed circumstance – Great Britain’s new powerlessness on the world stage – these artists exposed the effects of the long-standing imbalances between classes. In this elective, we will focus on the fiction, drama, and culture of contemporary England. Our work on rebellion in English culture will be informed by our analysis of punk-rock and post-punk bands and experimental filmmakers whose explorations showcase the same oppositional energy that characterizes the work of the era’s key British writers. For more information, contact Bart Thornton at bthornton@collegiate-va.org.

Mindful Living: An Introduction to MindfulnessBased Stress Reduction

No class on Wednesday, July 4th Pricing: 8 workouts = $200 16 workouts = $360 23 workouts = $460

Alex Peavey July 9 – July 12 • 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm (Monday – Thursday) $150 Mindfulness is moment-by-moment intentional awareness of the present, cultivated in a non-judgmental and openhearted manner so that we are able to see these things just exactly as they are. Approaching life more mindfully helps us to face and respond to the various challenges that arise each day, and this also enables us to be more fully present and productive when serving those around us in both our professional and personal lives. In this class, participants will learn the same strategies that are taught to doctors, nurses, and medical students at over 200 hospitals and medical schools across the country. This same approach has been used by NBA Head Coach Phil Jackson en route to 11 championships with the Chicago Bulls and LA Lakers. It was also used by the most recent USA Women’s Ice Hockey team who brought home the Olympic gold. Whether you want to be more mindful as a parent, at your work place, with friends, while playing a sport, or just while you enjoy your next meal, this class is for you! Alex Peavey is an Upper School Counselor at Collegiate, where he also teaches a Stress Management class to the freshmen as a part of their health and wellness curriculum. Alex attended a professional training led by Jon Kabat-Zinn of the UMass Medical Center for Mindfulness, in order to be able to teach MindfulnessBased Stress Reduction, which is the foundation for this summer course. Alex has since led professional development training in mindfulness to the Collegiate faculty, to graduate students in the School of Education at VCU, to the public school counselors in surrounding counties, and to the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Educators. For more information, contact Alex Peavey at apeavey@collegiate-va.org, or you can learn more about mindfulness by visiting the Mindful Living website at http://bit.ly/apeaveymindful.

• Participant can attend either morning or evening training sessions. • Child care can be arranged as needed for an additional fee. • Each participant will be required to fill out a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q). Are you tired of spending hours in the gym with the same old boring workout routine and minimal results? If you are, then Collegiate’s Director of Sports Performance, Will O’Brien has the training opportunity for you. KickStart fitness is an adult fitness program built to energize your personal fitness goals and self-confidence. Instead of obsolete and one-dimensional cardio and weight training, you’ll use advanced sports performance training methods to achieve total body fitness. These tested and proven methods use “functional” movements for incredible results in a motivational group training environment that boosts individual effort and encourages commitment and success. The benefits of this program include increased metabolism, strength, core stability, joint integrity and overall flexibility. KickStart fitness is designed for everyone regardless of the current fitness level. Whether you’re an advanced athlete who’s hit a plateau or a beginner who needs a little motivating, this 60 minute routine 2-3 days per week will help you to achieve your goals. It’s time to stop making excuses and take a step toward being in the best shape of your life. Hurry, as space will be limited to the first 25 eager participants! For more information, contact Will O’Brien at wobrien@collegiate-va.org or visit www.kickstartfitness.leag1.com.

Yoga offers many physical, mental and emotional benefits for everyone. Physically, yoga can increase flexibility, strength and balance by strengthening and lengthening the body’s muscles. Adult and teen yoga classes are level 1 practices designed to incorporate basic yoga postures, breath awareness and a short-guided relaxation period. Postures will be modified to meet the individual needs of each student and can be made more challenging if desired. Participants can expect detailed instruction to get in and out of poses and will have the option of hands on adjustments to help align or deepen certain poses. After warming up, Vinyasa (flowing from one posture to another) will comprise about 30 minutes of each class followed by some restorative poses and finally a short relaxation period. Previous yoga experience is not required but is always welcome. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a thin towel or blanket to class each day. Sarah Peavey is a graduate of the 200-hour Teacher Training program from Glenmore Yoga and Wellness Center and is currently in the process of completing her 500-hour training with an emphasis on therapeutic yoga there as well.
