SENIOR F I E L D HOCKEY

BC BRONZE AND A SIXTH STRAIGHT NORTH SHORE TITLE

The senior field hockey team was once again one of the top teams in British Columbia. After going undefeated in North Shore AA league play, they won the North Shore banner with a 3-2 win over Sentinel. This was the sixth straight North Shore banner that Collingwood has won. At the BC Championships, it became quickly clear that there were four outstanding teams with very little between them. Collingwood, Crofton House, Shawnigan Lake School and St. Michaels University School were all terrific teams. Collingwood won its pool and moved into the semifinals after another win over Sentinel. In the semi-final, Collingwood met arch-rival Shawnigan. SLS scored two minutes into the game, but Collingwood stormed back and evened the score with a Rachel Spouge goal. For large portions of the first half, the Cavs were the dominant team and came ever-so-close to taking the lead but couldn’t poke the ball over the line in a mad goal-mouth scramble.

SLS scored mid-way through the 2nd half and although the Cavs played well, they could not tie it up. SLS moved on to play Crofton in the final, while Collingwood faced SMUS for the bronze. It is always tough to play in a bronze medal game mere hours after a semi-final defeat, but the team was determined to win a medal. Graduating seniors Nicole Darc, Carley dePfyffer, Isabelle Gouin, Jasmine Keller, Sam McCord and Sam Steiner led the way. With the score tied and overtime looming, Sam McCord suddenly broke through on a great individual effort and swept it past the SMUS keeper. It was a fantastic goal and the bronze medal belonged to Collingwood. The Collingwood program has now won six provincial medals in the last six years under the guidance of coaches Ashleigh Gold, Catherine Underwood and Sara Bruner. With three gold, two silver and one bronze, Collingwood continues to be the envy of their AA competitors.

GRADE 9 R U G BY

GRADE 9 VANCOUVER AND DISTRICT RUGBY CHAMPIONS

The Grade 9 rugby team played some outstanding rugby this fall. They played in a very tough ISA Grade 9 league and posted wins over Shawnigan Lake School, St. George’s, Brentwood and Mulgrave. The only team that they could not defeat was St. Michaels. The Cavs played two epic games against SMUS but came up just a little short both times. Collingwood was once again the North Shore representative in the Vancouver and District playoffs. In the final, they defeated McMath from Richmond 34-22 to win the historic Vancouver & District trophy. As usual, it was a real team effort with the forwards dominating the ruck and tackle and winning beautiful ball for the hard running backline to exploit. This is the fourth time in five years that Collingwood has been Grade 9 Vancouver & District Champions.

C R O S S COUNTRY

BANNER YEAR FOR THE CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM

For the first time in the school’s sports history, Collingwood won a North Shore cross-country banner this year. The juvenile girls’ team of Charlotte Campbell, Katie Harris, Emma Rastad and Nikki SuttonMacGregor accomplished this feat with a dominating year of running. Charlotte, Katie and Emma constantly placed in the top five at the many North Shore meets, and Nikki provided those crucial points that a team needs to push it over the top. Grace Thompson also had a terrific cross-country season. After consistently finishing 2nd to her Sentinel rival in the North Shore meets, Grace used her amazing kick to sprint to a clear lead and victory at the Howe Sound Championships. Grace then went on to finish 10th at the BC Championships. Best of all, she will be back next year to challenge for a BC medal.

swimming

emily overholt “amazing” as she wins 3 provincial golds

Collingwood’s swim team took a record number of swimmers to the BC Championships this year. Coach Reid was expecting medals, and Emily Overholt did not disappoint as she won three gold medals and set two provincial records in the process. Emily won the 100 Free, 100 Fly and 100 Back. In all three races, Emily pulled away from her competitors as you would expect from the one of Canada’s top young swimmers. Emily then teamed up with Mackenzie Brabham, Amanda Leong and Levent Shah to finish 4th in the 200 Medley Relay. The team had really been focused on bringing a medal home in this event, but fell 0.13 short

of the bronze. The good news is that all four of these star swimmers are back next year. Amanda, Levent and MacKenzie all swam in individual races on the Saturday as well. Amanda notched a 16th place finish, while Mac came through with 5th, 13th and 14th place finishes and Levent posted a 7th and 8th place finish. Eli Chappell also posted a 11th place individual finish before teaming up with Ryan Neale, Peter Zhang and Tariq Keshavji for a 12th place finish in the Boys 200 Medley Relay race.

soccer

SOCCER BOYS AWESOME BUT EVER SO UNLUCKY

When the senior soccer team lost 1-0 to St. Thomas Aquinas in the North Shore playoffs in a game that they dominated for long periods of time, Coach Kanavos lamented what could have been. When STA went on to win the BC Championships, Coach K was almost inconsolable as he realized just how talented his team had been this year. This year’s team had it all - Two natural and deadly strikers in Michael Mauro and Max Hasman, a tremendous midfield with Adam Bushell and Adam Borrill controlling the play, a terrific back four with Michael Spouge and Jackson Cressey rock-solid in the middle and an amazing keeper in Harrison Sekhon. Right from the start of the season, the team played well, earning a semifinal berth in the tough ISA tournament, before losing Michael and Max for the crucial medal round games due to injury and club commitments. The team then went on to finish 2nd in league play, which is an impressive feat considering the wealth of powerhouse soccer programs on the North Shore. While the playoff loss was disappointing, the soccer program under Coaches Kanavos, Waterhouse and Garland has evolved into a perennial playoff contender. A number of key players are back for next year so the experience garnered this year will hopefully pay off in 2014.

volleyball

grade 9 volleyball undefeated in league play

The Grade 9 volleyball team’s year may not have finished in the fashion that they had hoped, but that cannot take away from a year where they went undefeated through league play. With all the powerful volleyball programs on the North Shore, an undefeated regular season demonstrates that these girls ‘have game’ and they will be the group that Collingwood builds its senior program around in the coming years. Throughout the team’s incredible 8-0 run, the girls lost only 4 sets, which is truly amazing.

JUNIOR F I E L D HOCKEY

junior field hockey repeats as ISA Champions

The junior field hockey brought home the ISA Championship for the second straight year with a thrilling overtime win over Shawnigan Lake School. Molly Wright scored in the shootout and Natalie Dalton was spectacular in net as the Junior Cavs proved there is plenty of talent ready to push for senior roster spots next year. Having top-notch coaches throughout the entire field hockey program has ensured that the senior team doesn’t rebuild, it simply reloads.

scholarships THREE COLLINGWOOD GIRLS OFF ON SCHOLARSHIP TO THE U.S. Mid-November was an exciting time in the Collingwood hallways as Brynn Danvers, Alix Kong and Madison Mailey all signed their National Letter of Intent, which indicated that they had chosen the lucky university that is going to get their talents next year. All three girls had been pursued by multiple American universities but each of them chose a school that they feel best suits their dreams of competing at the next level while receiving an excellent postsecondary education.

Alix is off to Indiana University on a golf scholarship, while Brynn and Madison will be rowing at San Diego State University and Northeastern respectively. There is little doubt that all three schools will be thrilled by signing such hard working and determined young women. Alix, Madison and Brynn have all already represented province and country at international events and cannot wait to test themselves in the exciting world of NCAA sports.

The success of Collingwood’s Athletics program is built on three essential factors: the skill and dedication of our coaches, the enthusiastic support of our parents, and the passion and talent of our student athletes. Each year, hundreds of Collingwood students build their skills, develop lasting friendships and learn valuable life lessons by participating in school sports. We are proud of our tradition of sporting excellence at Collingwood.
