Visual Art 6 - 7

Art 6 - 7 is the introduction to a wide range of media including drawing, painting, collage, ceramics and mixed media. These young artists explore new ideas and techniques to develop personal artistic expression and creative problem solving skills in a friendly and dynamic environment.

Studio Art 8 - 9

Art exploration continues with more advanced concepts and techniques. Students learn about the role of the artist in society and are encouraged to speak about their own art and the process of making art. Introduction to new art ideas and skills allows for students to extend their abilities and strengthen their confidence in personal expression.

Studio Art 10 - 12

Students learn and demonstrate knowledge of the language and vocabulary of art, elements and principles of art and design, and the techniques and process of making art. They also participate in critical discussion of artwork and the social and cultural contexts of art. In the second term of Grade 11 and continuing through Grade12, highly motivated students begin to build a portfolio of work for application to post secondary schools.

Advanced Placement Studio Art 12

Students prepare a portfolio of 24 pieces in one of three areas (Drawing, 2D Design and 3D Design) in preparation for the Advanced Placement exam which can qualify for university credit. Work must demonstrate technical prowess and ability to evolve explorations on a single theme.

Graphic Design

Through observation, discussion and hands-on practice students explore the world of graphic design. Exercises range from concept building with pen and paper to projects executed in software such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Projects include the creation of magazine ads, album covers, logos, business cards and silk screen designs for tshirts.

Digital Photography

Students explore the artistic possibilities within digital photography. They learn the basics of using a digital camera and how to create a good photograph using proper exposure, composition, lighting and effects. These budding photographers also experiment with Adobe Photoshop to enhance, manipulate and perfect their photos. New this year, AP 2D Design can be taken through Photo 12.

AP Art History

Young art historians learn to understand and appreciate art and architecture across a variety of time periods and cultures, developing skills such as visual awareness, critical thinking and written communication. Students focus on strategies for looking at and discussing important works of art and and to answer the question, “what is art and why do we study it?

Art Haus

Art Haus is an open studio for Grade 10 -12 students every Wednesday after school. It is a time for students and teachers to work on creating art in a relaxed atmosphere. Students may work on projects from their art classes or self directed projects. Great music and good food are provided.
