What to do • Ask your child to cut out the doors at the bottom of this sheet and glue them in the correct positions to show the sequence of numbers 0–20. • Ask your child to fi nd particular numbers. For example: “Can you fi nd the door with 13 on it?”, “Which is the door for number 7?” • You could also ask your child to colour particular doors, for example, to make the doors for numbers 11, 5 and 18 red, numbers 2, 14 and 7 blue, and so on. Look for numbers in the environment around you, particularly numbers 0–20, for example, on houses, buses, car number plates and price tickets in shops. Can your child find any of these to describe to you?

What to do • The party hats on the characters in the illustration show the ordinal numbers ‘1st’ to ‘20th’. Ask your child to cut out the hats at the bottom of this sheet and glue them on the correct characters. • For the characters without hats, can your child tell you their positions using ordinal numbers?

Ask your child to collect and arrange ten of their toys, all different, in a row. Ask about the toys’ positions using ordinal numbers. For example, ask: “Who is fi fth in the row?” “Which toy is fi rst?” “Where is the blue car?” Once your child is confi dent with ordinal numbers up to ‘tenth’, add more toys or make a row of other items, such as coloured pencils or counters, and repeat for numbers up to ‘twentieth’. For example, ask: “What colour is the thirteenth pencil?” “Which counters are red?”

What to do • Cut out the animals at the bottom of this sheet. Ask your child to look at the fi rst animal addition number sentence. Which of the cut-out animals will complete it correctly? Counting objects can be used to help work out the answer. Repeat this for all of the additions. When they are all correct, stick the animals into place. • Help your child to think of another addition fact with a total up to 5. Ask them to illustrate it on the back of this sheet by drawing, for example, animals, balloons or fruit.

Involve your child in addition in everyday situations. For example, “I have three potatoes … could you pass me two more? How many have we got altogether?” “Here are two teaspoons, but we need two more. How many do we need altogether? Could you count them out for me?” “I have three grapes and you have two … how many grapes does that make?”

Snappy subtraction Recall and write subtraction facts to 5 What to do

You will need:

• scissors • counting objects, such as counters or beads • two sheets of paper • glue

• Cut out the crocodiles. Ask your child to match the subtraction crocodiles with the correct answer crocodiles. Counting objects (such as counters) can be used to help work out the answers. Once they have matched up all the crocodiles, they can glue them, in pairs, onto a sheet of paper. • On another sheet of paper, ask your child to write the completed crocodile problems as subtraction number sentences. For example: 3 − 2 = 1. • Help your child to think of other subtraction facts. Ask them to write them down with the others. Involve your child in subtraction in everyday situations. For example, “We’ve got five ice creams but there are only three of us. How many will we have left?” “There are five oranges in the bag. If we put four away, how many will be left?”

It is a special rectangle because all its sides are ________________ length. What to do • Work with your child to fi ll in the gaps, using the words at the top of the page to help: write the name of each shape, the number of sides and whether they are straight or curved, and the number of corners. Finally, explain why a square is a special rectangle. Go on a 2-D shape hunt around the home, garden or other location. Encourage your child to look for circles, triangles, rectangles and squares. They may enjoy taking photographs of the shapes they find. Alternatively, use the back of this sheet to record how many of each shape your child spots. Š HarperCollinsPublishers Ltd. 2014

Sorting 2-D shapes

You will need:

Know circles, triangles, squares and rectangles

• scissors • glue • paper

There are: circles,

triangles,

squares and

rectangles.

What to do • Cut out the shape cards at the bottom of this sheet. Ask your child to sort the cards into four sets: circles, triangles, squares and rectangles. Count how many there are of each shape and complete the sentence above. Then stick each set of shapes and the completed sentence onto the sheet of paper. On the back of this sheet, help your child to draw a picture made up of circles, triangles, squares and rectangles. It could be a rocket, a fish, a train … or something completely different.
