Spelling Unit 1

The suffixes -cious and -tious When adding the ending -ious to a word, it is sometimes difficult to remember whether to spell it -cious or -tious because both sound like ‘shus’. If the root word ends in -ce, the ending is -cious. Remove the e before adding -ious: grace + ious = gracious. If the root word ends in -tion, the ending is -tious. Remove the -ion before adding -ious: caution + ious = cautious. There is one common exception: anxious (meaning: nervous).

Get started Sort the following words into -cious or -tious words by looking carefully at the suffix. One has been done for you. 1. scrumptious 2. cautious 3. precious 4. conscious 5. delicious 6. ambitious 7. fictitious 8. unambitious 9. incautious 10. ferocious -cious

-tious scrumptious

Spelling Unit 2

The suffixes -cial and -tial Some words end with the suffixes -cial and -tial. After a vowel, use the ending -cial. After a consonant, use the ending -tial. There are some exceptions. For example: financial, commercial, provincial. For these, it can help to remember the root nouns: finance, commerce and province. There are many -cial exceptions, however, that just have to be learned. For example: beneficial The exception ‘initial’ has no root word, so it just needs to be learned.

Get started Sort these words into two groups: words that end in -cial and words that end in -tial. One has been done for you. 1. torrential 2. financial 3. partial 4. special 5. artificial 6. provincial 7. social 8. initial 9. commercial 10. unofficial -cial
