Student’s Book pages 31–32

Read the comments that have been posted on Malala’s blog, and fill in the missing parts of the comments. Remember to keep to the topic and to be polite. I told my best friend Moniba everything. We’d lived on the same street when we were little and had been friends since primary school and we shared everything; Justin Bieber songs and Twilight movies, the best face-lightening creams. Her dream was to be a fashion designer, although she knew her family would never agree to it, so she told everyone she wanted to be a doctor. It’s hard for girls in our society to be anything other than teachers or doctors if they can work at all. I was different – I never hid my desire when I changed from wanting to be a doctor to wanting to be an inventor or a politician. Sarah: Malala, you are an inspiration to teenagers across the world. You have inspired me to work even harder at school, as I, too, have big dreams. Malala: Hello Sarah! Thank you for your praise. What are your big plans? Sarah: Abilio: Malala, in my country, girls have more opportunities for an education. My sister is a doctor and my next-door neighbour is an accountant. Malala: I am so glad to hear that girls in your country have more opportunities to be educated. What are your plans? Abilio: James: Malala, you say that you and your friends talk about facelightening creams. Surely you are being a hypocrite, making such a fuss about girls having the right to an education? What is the point of an education if girls worry about something as stupid as that? Malala: James: Sarah: James: Abilio: Malala: James: Malala: 16

Writing

Student’s Book pages 35–36

Here are four points of view used in writing. Add your own example to each type to complete the table. First Person narrative I can’t wait to read the next chapter – this is the best book ever written!

Third Person objective The girls walked to school, chatting about their plans for the weekend.

Third Person limited Sarah tried to calm herself by listening to her favourite song. She was still furious with her sister. Third Person omniscient Peter was shivering – not because he was cold, but because he was petrified of drowning. Mike, on the other hand, was having the time of his life! 17
