One Snowy Night
by Nick Butterworth
There on the step was a squirrel. It looked very cold and miserable. “I can’t get to sleep, Percy,” said the squirrel. “My bed is full of snow.” “Oh dear,” said Percy. “Never mind, I’ve got plenty of room for two.” The squirrel snuggled down next to Percy and soon began to feel warm. Knock! Knock! It was the door again. “Now who can that be?” thought Percy. …

Poor old Percy. And poor old Percy’s bed! The animals pushed and shoved and rolled around the bed, but there was just not enough room for them all. Soon the bed covers ended up in a big, tight ball. Then, bump! The covers rolled right off the bed and everybody fell on to the floor. “Oh dear,” said Percy. “This won’t do at all. My bed is just too small.” … 7 Treasure House Y1 Anthology Final.indd 7

But nobody moved. Nobody stirred. Nobody wanted to come out. The squirrel was tucked away in the pocket of Percy’s dressing gown. The hedgehog was in his coat. The fox … the rabbits … the badger … and the ducks were all safely hidden away. The mice had even squeezed themselves into Percy’s slippers! Everyone had found a cosy bed. “Well I never!” said Percy.

Fairy tales
Hansel and Gretel
by Malachy Doyle
“There is no food,” said the woodman. “How will we eat?” “Take Hansel and Gretel for a walk in the Brown Wood,” said his wife, “and leave them.” “No!” said the woodman. “I cannot!” “You must, or we will all die!” cried his wife. So the woodman took Hansel and Gretel into the Brown Wood.

He gave the boy and girl some cake to eat. But Hansel put it in his pocket and dropped little bits all along the way. The woodman left Hansel and Gretel deep inside the dark, dark wood. He walked away and did not look back. “Now we are all alone! How will we get home? Gretel sobbed.

“Do not cry,” said Hansel. “We will see the cake I dropped in the dirt, and it will lead us home.” But the birds came flying down from the sky. They saw the cake all along the way, and they ate it all up. Caw! Caw! Hansel and Gretel were lost. They walked on and on till they were very hungry.

Then they saw a small house. A sweet little granny was outside. “Come in and eat,” she said.
But when they got in she locked the gate. “I will make you fat!” she hissed. “I will toss you in this cauldron and cook you and eat you!”
