One Inch

Just one inch. One inch apart. We were face to face with just one inch apart. I placed my shivering hands onto the cold and scaly face of this teal-coloured dragon. She gave me a nod. I knew she was afraid of something. “What could it be? What happened to her?” I asked myself. “You are going to be fine,” I said as I consoled the creature beside me. The dragon breathed heavily and blew an enormous fire as I let go of the rope that held her. A faint smile spread across her face. We were so close to our destination. I was scared because it was the land where those who dared to go did not ever come back alive. I knew death is certain but there was still hope, right? Or was it just me hoping for nothing? We were getting nearer and nearer until I could see bones everywhere. Shiver ran through my spine. My face turned pale as if there was no blood. And there it was! The huge, dark cold-blooded monster! Terrified was not enough to describe how I felt. Lucky us, the monster did not see us. It did not have any clue that the dragon and I were so close. We quietly flew into the cave. Upon landing, I heard voices. I stood still and listened intently. “Elizabeth, why did you come? Why are you here? Isn’t your scar enough?” The words echoed. I removed my hood. The scar on my face could be seen. The monster sensed us and I could feel how frightened my dragon was. We backed off. I aimed my spear towards the monster.

“You missed!” the monster smirked at me. “Oh, no! I did not!” I replied, mustering as much courage as I could. I went out of the cave to make sure that I hit it. Bravery was my armour. If death caught up with me at this time, I would face it. My death would not be in vain. I looked around to see where the monster could be hiding. There! It was whimpering in pain. It could not last any longer. “See?” I grinned at the dragon. “We just went through hell, Artemis.” Just then, I heard a rumble, signalling the rockslide that I longed to witness. The monster was dead. “We were one inch away from death,” I whispered to Artemis. “Look, we made it!”
