Using the Age 7+ lesson plans for assessment Using the lesson plans for each group, you can easily identify the learning aims for each reading session (see the further guidance on using the lesson plans on page 10 of CBC Age 7+_How to use). Once you’ve selected your learning aims for the session, you can use the suggested activities to focus on the relevant skills and to check whether children have learnt them. Each lesson plan has an assessment section which will enable you to check children’s understanding of the focus phonics, and their grasp of a key comprehension skill. The lesson plans prompt you to make a note of children’s response to each assessment activity – you can use the photocopiable form CBC Age 7+_Assessment record keeping sheet do this. You can either complete a form for each reading session, or use the form periodically as best suits the needs of the group. Either way, the information collected on these forms will be very helpful in deciding the next steps to reinforce any skills which children may not yet have mastered. Ask them to write the words with the focus sounds (her, fibber, chair, immature). • Make note if children don’t the words the correct sound cards, or they struggle to use phonics to work out how to spell the words.
