Is there really buried treasure? Buried treasure does exist and there’s still lots to be discovered! Often treasure is found using a metal detector which bleeps when it detects something metal under the ground.

What is treasure? Treasure can mean anything that someone values, because it’s old or precious or just means a lot to them. Most treasure troves include gold and silver coins, jewellery or precious objects.

Objects that are important to our history and culture, including those made from gold and silver, or that contain precious metals and are over 300 years old, all count as treasure.

How do people find buried treasure? Some people find treasure by accident when they’re digging for something else. In 1840, workmen in Yorkshire repairing a riverbank dug up 7,500 Viking silver coins buried in a lead chest. In Suffolk, a metal detectorist looking for a farmer’s lost hammer in 1992 discovered a rich hoard of Roman treasure.

Archaeologists are professional treasure hunters! They’re historical experts who search areas which could contain buried treasure that will further our understanding of the history of that place. They use old maps and aerial or artificial satellite images to help them look for treasure.
