4 Sets

1 The universal set, U, is defined as the set of integers between 4 and 22 inclusive.

A and B are subsets of U such that:

A = {multiples of 3}

B = {odd numbers} a) State the number of elements in the universal set U. b) List the members of the subset A. c) List the members of the subset B. d) Draw a Venn diagram to represent the relationships among A, B and U.

2 Sets A and B are defined as follows:

A = {3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17}

B = {2, 4, 9, 11, 15}

Determine: a) n(A) d) (A

3 Use the Venn diagrams to shade the appropriate region.

4 If set A = {2, 4, 6}: a) state the number of subsets of A [1] b) write the subsets of A [2] a) even numbers greater than 24 [1] b) odd numbers between 25 and 35 [1] c) real numbers greater than 4 but less than 18 d) multiples of 4

5 Classify each of the following as either finite or infinite sets.
