Chapter 1

Tara Binns was excited. It was time for a visit to the costume box in the attic. She climbed up the ladder and opened the hatch. Her eyes sparkled.

The box was full of clothes, uniforms, hats and shoes. There was an outfit for every job Tara had heard of, and many more besides. Each time Tara visited the box, it gave her a different costume to wear, and sent her off on an adventure to try out a new job.

She opened the lid and felt the familiar tingling in her hand. It spread up her arm and around her whole body. The attic melted away and she felt herself spinning and tumbling … through space and time. She squeezed her eyes tight shut and wondered …

What will I be today?

Chapter 2

When the spinning stopped and Tara opened her eyes, she was out in the countryside. There were rolling hills and fields in all directions. Tara could see for miles around and the view was stunning. There were grassy meadows and leafy hedgerows, and shady woodland where trees lined the banks of a river that flowed down the valley. The bright sunshine was glinting off its crystal-clear water.

Tara felt the heat of the sun on her face as she took in the breathtaking scenery.

I wonder what job I’ll be doing here, Tara thought to herself. Perhaps I’m going to be a farmer … Tara looked at the costume the box had given her.

She was wearing a high-vis vest, hiking boots, protective gloves and a protective helmet. Maybe I’m a builder? she wondered. I hope not … I wouldn’t want to change this beautiful landscape.

“Hi! I’m Ayesha,” said a girl, striding up the hill towards Tara, “and this is Ortez. We’re environmental engineers.”

“We work with … wind power,” panted Ortez, with the effort of the climb. “It’s a … kind of … renewable energy … which means it … doesn’t run out … of puff.”

“Unlike you!” joked Ayesha. “The hill wasn’t that steep!”

“Is that a windmill?” asked Tara, pointing to what Ayesha was holding.
