YOUR SOURCE FOR OEM APPROVED EQUIPMENT PROFILE
It’s no secret that Arslan Automotive is a staple name in the collision repair industry, due to the professional quality and reliability of its 3D measuring and welding equipment brands, which have become well-recognized in Canada among collision repair professionals.
Arslan Automotive Canada Ltd. has been going strong for over 43 years. The company is best known for its TECNA Smart/Smart Plus Inverter Spot welding equipment, including Accuweld-inverter pulse MIG/MAG welder models, both of which have captured a significant slice of the Canadian market. They also manufacture Accuvision-3D measuring system developed by Arslan Automotive Canada and made in Montreal. According to the company, the 10-AV700 3D measuring system is “the quickest, simplest and most versatile and accurate” 3D measuring system in the world. Arslan Automotive shows no signs of slowing down its sales of these systems with over 350 shops in Canada and US having adopted the system for their 3D measuring since its genesis approximately 3 years ago. In 2021, the company introduced a new line of 3 Pulse MIG welding machines and an Inverter Arc Dent puller repair system for dents, under the brand name Accuweld, Pulse MIGs that are available in single torch (mdl.60-TM736), two torch, (mdl.60-TM742) and three torch (mdl.60-TM743) models with state of the art features as auto-setting torches, 4 wheel wire drive system and more.
According to the company, the Accuweld 60-TM750FK Arc Dent Puller system is a high-end synergic welder with programs dedicated to both aluminum and steel and is capable of repairing dents and strengthening thin metal sheets, especially when it comes to aluminum.
The system also features a colour graphic display with a simple-touse interface, with customizable and storable programs, plus an SDMemory Card to update and add programs. Arslan has been focusing on the Canadian market, and introducing the Accuweld line to its U.S. sales agents and customers at 2021 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
Further, Arslan Automotive continues to develop its export markets for the Accuvision-3D measuring system.
Last year, Arslan Automotive told Collision Repair it had signed an agreement with the Kia and Hyundai National Car Dealers Associations of Korea. The partnership seeks to promote the installation of Accuvision 3-D measuring systems in all Korean collision repair facilities. As part of the agreement, Arslan had to created a Korean version of Accuvision 3-D programmed with the chassis data specific to models sold in South Korea.
For reference, Hyundai and Kia vehicles comprise approximately 90 percent of new cars sold in Korea.
The company has now appointed a new distributor for Vietnam, KINGTECH ENGINEERING CORPORATION, where it can profit from a market that essentially can use the Accuvision-3 chassis databank that the company had created for entry to the South Korean market in 2022.
“We look forward to increased sales in 2023 with this new distribution agreement as we are dealing with a well established and respected equipment distributor for the country,” said Arman Gurarslan, president and owner of Arslan Automotive.
Notwithstanding the recent increases in interest rates and a looming worldwide recession which are challenges to contend with, the company continues to forge ahead with its marketing efforts and invest the necessary dollars to start the rolling out process for Accuvision-3D in Vietnam.
“We want to be there when things settle down and market growth starts up,” continued Gurarslan.

INTEGRATED CAR PART PRO (IPRO) CONTINUES TO EVOLVE TO MEET YOUR NEEDS
Backordered parts, no delivery, sound familiar? Integrated Car Part Pro (iPro) can help. The iPro marketplace continues to evolve to meet the collision repair industry’s growing needs for alternative parts and with the current supply chain challenges this is important now more than ever.
Is your team struggling to source parts and get them when they need them? iPro’s new automation features may be the solution. This article highlights some of iPro’s newest features including automated part policy, assembly automation and expanded availability with a deeper Interchange catalog to help alleviate today’s parts challenges.
ENHANCED PART POLICY SOLUTIONS
Introduced recently, iPro’s part policy feature can ensure that the parts searched and selected meet your insurance company’s guidelines and the new scorecard identifies claims with outstanding performance or additional opportunities. Parts that are not allowed (e.g., air bags, uncertified, etc.) are filtered out and cannot be searched, ideal for newer appraisers and shops that may not know which parts comply with which insurers guidelines.
How it works: The insurance policy is applied automatically if the policy is in iPro. The end user doesn’t have to worry about selecting a part that isn’t permitted by the policy. For example, some carriers may restrict parts for newer cars with less miles. Parts are customized based on the insurer’s policy and the parameters set (e.g., A grade recycled front doors or CAPA certified front bumper reinforcements). iPro’s part policy automated enhancement manages these guidelines.
Car-Part.com CEO Jeff Schroder says, “iPro enables users to easily search and select parts, working within partner insurer guidelines. This optimization streamlines workflow and enhances customization while maintaining the maximum supply chain results, and the new Car-Part scorecard highlights even more part opportunities.”
MORE ASSEMBLY AUTOMATION
Going beyond the policy enhancements, iPro continues to enhance its assembly automation with additional functionality and more parts. A recycled assembly consists of multiple parts that are sold together as an assembly. Adding to the complexity, estimating systems are based on an OE component parts numbering system while the recycling industry is based on a recycled assembly Interchange so it can be challenging to source recycling parts. iPro helps fill this void by automatically matching the right components with their corresponding assemblies. iPro has identified components on an estimate and mapped them to recycled replacement part assemblies for many years and now for even more assemblies. iPro’s newest assembly automation features include front and rear bumpers, front and rear doors, front-end assemblies, headlights and hoods with more to come. The simplified workflow:
• Helps increase overall alternative part usage by automatically associating more assemblies with components (e.g., a front bumper will automatically associate a bumper cover, reinforcement bar and an impact absorber)
• Ensures parts are not duplicated on the final estimate, reducing part costs by not paying for components already included within the assembly.
iPro’s latest automation expedites the parts sourcing process with simple workflow optimization.

SATA RPS Multi-Purpose Cup –The cup system for mixing and painting
The SATA RPS (Rapid Preparation System) multi-purpose cup system performs four functions: mixing, painting, refilling, storing. The handling of SATA RPS is so easy because it consists of only three parts: cup, lid and sieve.
SATA RPS fits directly onto your SATA spray gun with QCC connector (Quick Cup Connector) without any adapters. It makes a technician's life much easier, considerably increases productivity and drastically reduces the consumption of cleaning solutions and solvents.
Bendable – allows the painting of sill areas or wheel arches "overhead" Stable – due to the screw connection between cup and lid, the cup always remains on the lid and gun even when touching obstacles. Easy removal of the lid in case of emergency – without soiling the working area. Clean removal of the cup – by pressing the cup in, vacuum is created, which empties the material passage when pulling the trigger. Constant material flow – helps the painter to achieve perfect coating results just like child's play. Very quick colour change – cleaning becomes a minor matter Available in 3 cup sizes: 0.3 l, 0.6 l and 0.9 l Also available as UV version: 0.6 l

SPANESI, A FAMILY COLLISION REPAIR TRADITION
MORE THAN 50 YEARS OF PASSION AND INNOVATION
A young Orazio Spanesi.
The week before Orazio Spanesi’s 14th birthday, he was approached by a friend with exciting news—there was a job available. Orazio was enthusiastic because his family lived in the country, and they were impoverished. So, he rushed over to meet with the business owner. During their conversation, the owner offered Orazio a job in a collision repair business and gave him a bicycle to use to get to work. The bicycle was too tall. But that didn’t stop Orazio. He learned how to ride the bike by putting one of his legs under the crossbar and rode that bicycle to work for more than two years.
ORAZIO OPENS HIS FACILITY
In the summertime of 1969, Orazio Spanesi opened his first collision repair facility in the small village of Padova, Italy. Orazio used tools he created to repair his customer’s vehicles.
“Immediately, I knew that I could create equipment,” explained Orazio. “I never did it just for me, but I made it with the idea of selling it.”
While Orazio designed and tested his tools in his own business, he was also curious about what the rest of the world offered. He began traveling and visiting the national and international tradeshows, looking for the correct answer to his efficiency needs. Orazio realized that those tools just didn’t exist along the way, and the market was too slow to adapt to his business’s needs.
SPANESI BEGINS MANUFACTURING EQUIPMENT
Orazio took his passion, intuition, and experience to the collision equipment manufacturing industry in 1989, and when he founded his namesake business, Spanesi®, S.p.A. The very first frame straightening bench was manufactured in 1989, along with the Spanesi Universal Jig System. To date, the original Universal Jig System is still sold and has only had to be updated to accommodate aluminum vehicles.
In 1992, Orazio recognized there had to be a better way of measuring vehicles. So, he set out to show the world how to measure, repair, and document damaged vehicles. Designed from the ground up, Spanesi produced their first Touch electronic measuring system. THE SPANESI 3600 CONCEPT
Spanesi’s vast and deep array of collision repair equipment offerings are widely accepted in most OEM repair programs today.
Spanesi is the only company to offer a complete Spanesi 360o Concept for the collision repair industry. From structural repair benches, threedimensional electronic measuring systems, vacuum systems, prep stations, spray booths, MIG / MAG welders (aluminum, steel, and silicon-bronze), squeeze-type resistant spot welders, office furnishings, paintless dent repair systems, and facility design services.
Even today, all Spanesi’s products are used in Orazio’s collision repair facility, which is now surrounded by his manufacturing plant in that small village of Padova.
Orazio took his passion, intuition and experience to the collision equipment manufacturing industry in 1989.

ABRASIVES
ROUGHED UP
NEW MATERIALS AND EVER-INCREASING DURABILITY REQUIRE STELLAR ABRASIVES
The world of abrasives has undergone significant change over the years to keep in step with automotive coatings, and that progress can still be observed in the advancement of new types of sandpaper and material smoothing technologies.
If automotive technology is known for one thing, it is that as one area of focus advances, the others are obliged to follow suit, or risk the formation of a gap in which some repairs can be done, but others cannot.
As the paints and coatings we apply to vehicles become increasingly more durable and chemically complex, we must continue to innovate in the field of abrasives so that no matter how nice that paint job ends up being, it can still be sanded down and refinished again one day.
Materials like aluminum, high-strength steel and carbon fibre come with unique challenges to a refinisher and quality products are crucial to ensuring proper work is done, right from the very first step.

With what was formerly cutting-edge paint technology now starting to come of age, especially when we consider the ongoing Honda Civic paint peeling debacle, the abrasives industry will have its work cut out for it in the coming years as many drivers attempt to return the shine to their shabby paint jobs.

ADHESIVES
SOLVING STICKY SITUATIONS
ADHESIVES THAT HELP KEEP IT TOGETHER
Our industry functions at its best when all its parts are sticking together—a frame doesn’t mean much if there aren’t panels welded onto it, nor does a paint job without a proper sanding done beforehand.
The glass and plastic components on our vehicles are no different, and they have much more specific needs than the methods of heat and metal we are traditionally used to.
Proper adhesives are crucial in ensuring that all of those tiny, seemingly minute features you spend your extra dollars upgrading your trim level for are affixed and functioning correctly.
Adhesion technology is in many ways the last line of defence for many driver safety features, while unfortunately also often being the first thing to fail when held to the fire, so to speak.
Just last year, Ford faced a recall that forced the legacy automaker to take 7,000 of its F-series trucks off the road due to faulty windshield adhesives that could allow the glass to slip out of place while driving.
No accidents or injuries were attributed to the defect, but imagine you’re driving down the highway at 100km/h and it occurs to you—a small layer of glue is all that keeps that 30 lbs. slab of glass from crashing down on top of you.
To this end, fellow automaker Volvo has issued a number of position statements cementing the company’s approach to adhesive and its insistence on the use of first-party adhesive kits in order to guarantee the efficacy of their glass.
Additionally in 2020, General Motors developed an epoxy-based adhesive that would allow its engineers to integrate different steels and aluminum parts to the Cadillac CT6 without compromising their integrity, showing the way that a simple change in the makeup of an adhesive can open new opportunities for auto body innovation.
The coming pages will show off the many other ways that the automotive adhesives sector is subtly, but substantially changing what is possible in the auto body and collision repair spaces.

ALIGNMENT AND MEASURING
SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT
HOW STREAMLINED ARE YOUR ALIGNMENT PROCESSES?
Measuring and alignment technology can do more than just keep the client in your facility, but it can also streamline your dealings with insurers and provide a transparent picture of the repair process for all parties involved.
As the collision industry develops and the repairs become increasingly complex, customers have come to expect their auto repair experience to be limited to a one-stopshop—the days of outsourcing alignment and measuring services are gone, and life moves too fast for your clients to tour their wrecked vehicle around their city’s various specialized repair facilities. The difference between having an inhouse measuring system can mean life and death for some repair facilities in Canada’s most competitive markets, making smart investing and proper use of production space an emerging science for shop owners. Plus, with the amount of cameras, sensors and other sensitive components on vehicles these days, it really is in a facility’s interest to invest in some amount of alignment technology, for the sake of safety and quality control alone.
Measuring and alignment technology can do more than just keep the client in your facility, but it can also streamline your dealings with insurers and provide a transparent picture of the repair process for all parties involved.
The field has advanced to a point where the units themselves are not just more compact than ever, allowing managers to maximize their production space, but also more efficient in their ability to map out a repair and compare what a repairer is facing with what a given OEM recommends.
The addition of these tools almost functions as an extra set of eyes on the shop floor—the key difference being that these eyes are computer-calibrated and can detect even the most miniscule of misalignments in a vehicle body.
Nearly every vehicle on the road today is equipped with some sort of advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS), and nearly every ADAS needs recalibration after the smallest hit to a sensor-equipped area.
Having the tools under your belt to complete that work is just the natural next step for repair facilities—a glance through the following products may be just what you need to get you started on the right track.
The tools of today are far more technologically advanced than your trusty-dusty measuring tape.

AUTO GLASS
SEE IT CLEARLY
From mobile windshield repairs to in-house chip fixes and ADAS calibration, there are plenty of clear opportunities in auto glass.
If collision repair were like fashion, auto glass would be dubbed the “new black”.
In the past few years, alongside the popularity surge around advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), many big collision players have poured resources into glass initiatives. At the time of publication, aftermarket giant Driven Brands has acquired five auto glass companies this year alone. Michael Macaluso, the executive VP and president of paint, collision and glass for Driven Brands, once called the auto glass sector “highly fragmented,” and the company has added both mobile glass repair and in-facility services to its roster in 2022.
Even OEMs have glass on their minds. Ford and General Motors filed requests for temporary exemptions earlier this Fall, asking for the Federal Vehicle Safety Standards to waive the need for windshield wipers, transparent glass, rearview mirrors—even manual controls. A fully autonomous vehicle, the OEMs say. Guess you better learn how to fix chips on opaque glass.
Ford is savvy in keeping glass repairs clear and concise; the OEM’s recent OnTarget newsletter featured a reminder to glass repair technicians, asking those on the Ford Certified Glass Network (FCGN) to familiarize themselves with official Ford calibration tools and to keep up-to-date with frequent over-the-air updates. “Windshields are for more than keeping the rain out,” the automaker cautioned readers.
Despite the trend of getting into glass, the vertical is not for everybody. You must be prepared to offer top-notch ADAS calibrations and have the keenest eye for detail to succeed in such a field.
So, is auto glass the right fit for your business? Only you can be the judge of that. Clear up some of your equipment-related questions by browsing the following pages.
Equalizer PowerPump
Equalizer Industry’s Equalizer PowerPump eliminates the need for manual pumping of your Visual Vacuum Cups or Wood’s Powr-Grip Vacuum Cups, according to the company. Simply replace the original plunger in your existing cup with the PowerPump, press the button and let your cup automatically draw down. The PowerPump is designed for a minimum 5 hours of constant run time and can be used as a manual pump if your battery needs to be recharged. Includes 1 USB-C charging cord.
Raptor F22 Deluxe Kit
The Raptor™ from Equalizer® is a cord and wire auto glass removal device, designed around AirForce™ Constant Vacuum Cups, dramatically improving the power of the vacuum cup. With technology developed by Equalizer®, quick placement and constant vacuum pressure to the glass are no issue for the Raptor™ as it resists sliding, allowing it to be effective again and again.
The easiest one-man setting device ever made.
The Sentinel™ allows one technician to remove and replace all type of glass on a wide variety of vehicles including large busses and RV’ s.
Powered with AirForce™ Technology, the Sentinel™ vacuum cups provide a constant hold to allow movement in a variety of angles to get the right position in lifting or setting glass.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS
A SAFE WORKPLACE IS A BASIC REQUIREMENT
Some recent high-profile cases surrounding the auto industry have pushed workplace safety to the forefront. Combine greater health awareness with the workplace fluidity of the gig economy, and you have a generation of workers who are acutely aware of the presence or absence of measures taken to protect their health, or the failure to.
In the case of auto repair and body shops, protection becomes a full body affair—literally. The fumes from primers, varnishes and aerosols can be absorbed over time, especially through the respiratory system, the eyes and even the skin. This necessitates a variety of personal protective equipment such as properly filtered masks, suits and protective goggles, alongside larger systems. Keeping your shop well-circulated with clean air ensures a comfortable work environment and minimizes the chance of stray dust and particles slowing down your team’s paintwork.
The fumes from primers, varnishes and aerosols can be absorbed over time, especially through the respiratory system, the eyes and even the skin.
Equipping your shop with dust extractors, ventilators and other protective gear is just as important as quality training and hiring the right people. These are investments that grow over time, attract better workers, and draw more customers—factors that will boost your revenue more than any corner-cutting will.
Dozens of studies from various industries including the skilled trades confirm the same idea —healthy workers are more efficient team members, more productive and reduce workplace disruption.
For those who have yet to be convinced, supplying and maintaining safety equipment is a legal obligation. Failure to abide by Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations can result in fines, imprisonment, corporate probation or ‘creative sentences.’ Yes, this is quoted verbatim.
Safe workers are confident workers, and here are some products to keep your team at their best.
The days of the dusty collision centre are long behind us. With respirators, regular fit tests, dust extraction systems and modern tools, you can breathe easy knowing your employees are covered.

PAINT
PAINT WITH THE PROGRAM
ECO-FRIENDLY PAINT TRENDS ARE DUE FOR DEVELOPMENT
The sustainably-produced e-coating used at BMW’s Plant Leipzig is manufactured from biomass and helps avoid CO2 emissions, according to the OEM.
Modern paint technology is developing in ways that would be outright fantasy a few decades ago.
Multiple industry experts including CEICA point towards the integration of nanotechnology in auto coatings, from colour-shifting paint to ceramic bonding and paint with metallic flecks in it—an invention that may add visual flair, but amplifies the vehicle’s detectability by other AVs on the road, thanks to the flecks reflecting light and radar signals at the sensors.
While you and your customers may not want an AV, being detected by AVs on the road is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one. This distinction may translate to more auto coatings having AV detection in mind, potentially becoming a mainstay of your paint range and another medium to master.
In contrast, paint companies and automakers are becoming increasingly eco-conscious. Take BMW’s own venture with BASF’s paint sustainability process. The OEM has said it is “taking advantage of new options to conserve resources and reduce emissions in bodywork,” and claims to be the first automaker to use matte paints made from biomass instead of crude oil. BMW uses the process and materials in its European plants.
BASF says these paints are “chemically identical” to paints previously used, with all the same properties as conventionally manufactured body coatings.
The technology inside paint may change but your work hasn’t—so long as you learn with the curve and you’re set for spraying success. Precise colour matching, attention to detail, patience, using appropriate application techniques and keeping your tools pristine are still the bread and butter that turn expensive canned liquids into beautiful automotive coatings.
Swatches from BASF’s 2022/23 Colour Report. Exactly which hues will be most sported as we move toward electrification—we’ll have to wait and see. The technology inside paint may change, but your work hasn’t. Learn with the curve and you’re set for spraying success.

PAINT BY ROBOTS
THE NEVER-ENDING JOURNEY TOWARD FASTER OPERATIONS
BMW says its process is so precise that designs can be applied without stencils or masking.
The industry has seen some forays into automatic car painting processes in recent years, with automotive giants even trying their hand at the technology.
In autumn 2021, BMW released a video of its car-painting robot. In the clip, an autonomous arm covers the vehicle with no overspray whatsoever, according to the automaker. The process is used at BMW’s Dingolfing plant in Germany, and the OEM says it’s so precise that designs can be applied without stencils or masking. It says the tech enables “virtually limitless options for individualization,” and can reduce the factory’s carbon footprint by 2,000 tonnes. PPG unveiled its automatic paint mixing system ‘Moonwalk’ in Europe in June 2019 and has since installed more than 1,000 units in bodyshops in the Middle East, Europe and Africa regions. The tool, designed to fill all mixing rooms, features 80 storage spaces for tinters and 13 positions in the dispensing rack says PPG. The user simply loads the required tinter, additive and thinner bottles to the dispensing rack, where the system will scan a barcode to dispense the correct amount of product. It also prints a label for
the final product. 3M also released its own Finesse-it Robotic Paint Repair System last fall, which is said to automate the paint defect repair process. The company says the system enables robots to efficiently and reliably sand and buff out paint defects like dirt, fibres, pops and scratches. The tech beat out 20+ other presentations on recent automotive innovations to claim a SURCAR award. 3M says the system

took years to develop and is comprised of “tools, abrasives and process expertise designed to work together with a range of robots,” though does acknowledge that some defects will need to be repaired by an operator.
While the quality of such systems may be argued by industry professionals, there are even knock-off robotic car painters sold through online marketplaces like Alibaba— though under no circumstances does Collision Repair suggest you take advantage of this untested tech.
While we may not be able to offer you the top-notch tech discussed on this page the Collision Repair Buyer’s Guide has pages of reliable paint hardware for you to peruse; from paint booths and spray guns to UV lamps and mixing cups. Maybe next year we’ll have robots.

SOFTWARE AND MANAGEMENT
FUNCTION AND FLOW
WHAT’S YOUR TRACK RECORD? YOU WON’T KNOW WITHOUT SOFTWARE MANAGEMENT
Robots are here—are you taking advantage of their services?
Perhaps software management programs and computer/cloud-based tools are yet a far cry from robots, but the technology can surely aid in smoothing out a collision centre’s operations.
There are many different softwares that claim to aid the repair process in your facilities, from OEM info-sourcing tools to claims platforms with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) integrations. Whatever top-of-mind topic your business finding OEM repair procedures fast, accurate and easy,” according to the company. At a recent event, RepairLogic developer, Nicky Woerner, told audiences that 97 percent of early users said the program increased their confidence in finding accurate procedures and parts; 92 percent said they were able to source parts in a single source via RepairLogic. These are but two programs said to provide unmatched technological help in your facility. There are countless more—you can even work with

faces today, there’s a tool out there—or in development—to fix it.
Take Solera | Audatex’s Qapter platform, for one, which has been updated to integrate AI-based damage detection. The company says Qapter is the first end-to-end claims solution powered by AI, and that the program can “produce a professional vehicle repair estimate with unmatched speed and accuracy.”
There’s also a case for OEConnection’s upcoming RepairLogic, which “makes providers to discover which features are most beneficial for your team. And, contrary to popular belief, training on these tech-ridden systems does not resemble learning rocket science. In fact, training for some programs is but a mere 30 minutes.
So, if you’re letting that desktop dinosaur of a computer sit on the front desk gathering dust, it’s time to invest in some management software. Let’s stay with the times.

CRASH COURSE IN AI
ROBOTS ARE ON THE HORIZON, BUT THEY’RE NOT TAKING YOUR JOBS
By Max Reid
In his 1950 collection of “I, Robot” short stories, Isaac Asmiiov wrote “you just can’t differentiate between a robot and the very best of humans,” and that thought is quickly turning into reality, according to Hod Lipson, professor of engineering and data science at Columbia University, and featured speaker at Fix Network’s 2022 National Conference.
The world-renowned roboticist and autonomous vehicle expert took the stage in Quebec City on the conference’s opening day with a presentation on how “robotics changed the industry once,” and how “it will change it again,” according to Lipson.
He says that in just the past 10 years, artificial intelligence and machine learning has progressed to the point where modern ADAS technology has surpassed human levels of split-second object recognition.
Lipson says that the human ability to correctly identify a stationary object at first glance is about 95 percent accurate, and that figure has been the threshold to overcome for AI performance.
A decade ago, AI operated at an average accuracy of 75 percent—which Lipson points out is effective in operating some basic safety features, while being limited in complexity.
“We have had cameras and computers in cars for decades now, that has not changed, but no one had software that could tell the difference between a motorcycle and a bicycle—things that we humans do without even thinking about it,” he said.
Lipson explained that there are essentially two methods to governing an artificial intelligence; either through a rule-based system where the AI is instructed, for example, that “this part is damaged,” or “this part is not damaged,” based on set definitions of damage.
On the other hand, machine learning-based AIs are provided with data relating to all of the types of damage and their effects on a certain
part, so the AI can then adapt to scenarios that it has learned to recognize as damage.
He says that the automotive industry has, since about 2015, come to embrace machine learning technology as the likely method of making AVs a functioning part of the transportation ecosystem.
Major automakers now make use of technology like the open-source DeepLearning software to enhance their ADAS features with
current, real-world traffic data that helps machine learning-based AIs continually improve their performance.
“These autonomous vehicles are driven by a new kind of artificial intelligence—an AI that, for the first time in the history of AI, can understand what it sees. Vehicles are now able to understand the difference between a pothole and a puddle,” said Lipson.
When people who work with their hands hear mention of robots and AI, they often take a defensive step back at the mere thought of a machine replacing them and the skills they have worked to develop, but Lipson also wanted to reassure repairers that they have nothing to fear from their computer-based co-workers for the foreseeable future.
“There is a misconception around what AI and robots are good for,” he said.
“I believe that it would be very difficult to automate an auto repair. An AI could drive your car tomorrow, but when it breaks down there will be a human crawling around fixing it. There is no way a robot can do it, it is so unstructured and difficult and we are so far away from the physical dexterity that humans have when they are fixing things. I think those jobs are going to remain for a long time.”
“Autonomous vehicles are driven by a new kind of artificial intelligence—an AI that, for the first time in the history of AI, can understand what it sees.” – Hod Lipson, professor of engineering and data science | Columbia University
SCANNING AND ESTIMATION
FROM PAPERS TO IPADS
THE INDUSTRY’S WORDS ON WEB-BASED PLATFORMS
A proper understanding of the estimating platforms used in your facility, combined with the ability to write accurate estimates and advocate for repairs accordingly, can result in improved KPIs in several areas; cycle time and throughput, for two.
Those with their toes in the industry for a few decades will know how tedious writing estimates used to be. Heck, some of you might have carpal tunnel to prove it.
Today’s estimating systems, contrary to the pen-and-paper methods of the past, are almost entirely web-based. In 2022, you can perform estimates in the palm of your hand, via a smartphone or tablet.
It’s no secret these platforms have advanced technologically alongside the rise of complex tech present in modern vehicles—think advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and the millions of lines of code resting deep in the softwares of the vehicles in your shop. Pre- and post-scans are non-negotiable in today’s repair climate, and writing proper estimates is integral to that equation.
Collison Repair mag recently conducted a survey on the state of estimation where readers revealed that a simple estimate can take anywhere from five minutes to upwards
Readers suggest a simple estimate can take anywhere from five minutes to upwards of an hour. For complex estimates, readers suggest the task can take anywhere from one hour to six hours to complete.
of an hour. For complex estimates, readers suggest the task can take anywhere from one hour to six hours to complete.
When it comes to training staff on estimating systems, the results were just as muddled. Some readers said it takes them a few mere hours to train new employees on an estimating platform; others argue that you may never be proficient.
“It takes several days to be just functional; several months to gain proficiency,” wrote one reader.
“I’d say training takes about six months, depending on the system,” wrote another anonymous reader. “However, due to insurance company involvement, training is never-ending.”
“Good question,” admitted another.
Regardless, the survey drew at least one consensus across the board: the systems of today are generally faster than those of yesteryear.
“We used to hand-write estimates,” reminisced a respondent. “Plus, web-based systems are much quicker than the old server-based platforms.”
So, how hands-on is your team when it comes to understanding your platforms and serving the customer an accurate estimate?

PAINTLESS DENT REPAIR | NON STRUCTURAL REPAIR
MASSAGING YOUR DENTS
GONE ARE THE DAYS WHERE YOU’D ‘BANG ‘EM OUT’
The collision repair industry’s former best kept secret—paintless dent repair, or PDR. Does your shop understand the concept? Are you losing business to someone who does?
For customers, the prospect of a noninvasive, same-day job that pulls all those small, pesky dents from your car, often for much less money than a standard collision repair job, is justifiably attractive.
It is true, the collision repair industry has been somewhat slow to adopt the relatively new method of dent repair, however, PDR is quickly becoming one of the most soughtafter repair services for customers and those shops without at least a few tricks up their sleeve could be missing out.
What used to be somewhat of a niche add-on service is now a fixture in many collision repair technician programs across the country and quickly becoming a norm at the repair facilities they end up in.
What used to be somewhat of a niche add-on service is now a fixture in many collision repair technician programs across the country and quickly becoming a norm at the repair facilities they end up in.
Repair facilities in Western Canada would do well to bear this fact in mind, as the Prairies more than pull their weight in the frequency of hail storms compared to the rest of the country, and the ability to fix those dents immediately after that damage occurs will put your shop on the fast-track to become a community favourite.
Even the most basic of PDR product setups will elevate your business and its processes before you even realize. Your painters will be able to open time to work on more intensive projects, instead of being occupied with many small refinishing jobs that could be eliminated entirely through PDR.
Where previously a vehicle could sit in a repair bay for a week waiting for the different stages of the repair process to be completed; with PDR, customers typically see their keys back in their pocket within a couple of hours.
Some use magnets, some use heat, but none of the products ahead will require you to crack open a paint can, we promise.

RECYCLING
GREENER, MEANER, CLEANER
YOU’RE LOOKING AT A FRESHLY REFURBISHED RECYCLING INDUSTRY
Credit: Parts 4 Less U Pull, Oshawa, Ont.
The automotive recycling industry is thriving, don’t you know? The days of “scrapyards” or “car junkyards” are long behind us. Any modern auto recycler or member of the Automotive Recyclers of Canada (ARC) will know the ins and outs of the Environmental Activity and Sector Registry (EASR) for end-of-life vehicle waste disposal sites in Ontario. For those unaware, all activities related to end-of-life waste disposal sites are required to register in the EASR and have had to do so since September 2016.
According to information received from the government to Steve Fletcher, managing director of the ARC, 102 EASR-related inspections took place in 2021, with an average pass rate of 12 percent and an average failure rate of 60 percent. The inspections were made based on tips from sources; thus, those inspected were already suspected to be operating against environmental standards.
Further, the auto repair industry continues to navigate parts shortages in the wake of the pandemic. When Canadian Auto Recyclers magazine conducted interviews for the 2022 edition of its annual magazine, auto recyclers across Canada commented
on their sales through the pandemic—some businesses had never seen numbers so high. An industry that was already laser-focused on the online car parts market and was certainly familiar with the online car buying world, many auto parts recyclers were able to take advantage of the parts shortages and DIY parts projects, when stay-at-home orders were in place.
All of that said—and more on the horizon—the used auto parts market and auto recycling sector is not the same as the stereotypes in your head. In the same way that ‘bodyshops’ have transitioned to ‘collision repair centres’, automotive recycling facilities have increased awareness, efficiency and protocols across the board—let the top-notch products on the following pages serve as proof.

TOOLS AND ACCESSORIES
MODERN TIMES, MODERN TOOLS
HANDTOOLS ARE MORE THAN EASILY LOST BITS AND BOBS
Getting your start in the collision repair industry can be tough, no matter what path you take. The initial investment in tools alone is enough to send an incoming apprentice’s head for a spin.
In the age of automatic welders and artificial intelligence-driven claims, it’s easy to forget how integral the average hand tools are in modern collision repair. What would the painter do without a tool to tweak the fine positions of a masking job? What would this world be like without a sheet of sandpaper readily available? How would a hail dent be addressed if it weren’t for the magic wands of PDR?
These tools, though many of them long familiar to our hands, are still ever advancing. Even the most basic of tools—or ones without motherboards of technology—see developments alongside the always-changing automotive industry.
One of the most addressed improvements often lies in a tool’s efficiency. The quicker a quality job can be completed, the better the tool, in the eyes of many. Business owners are consistently focussed on bottom lines and KPIs; if a tool is affordable, effective and can stand the test of time, it’s sure to be a winner in the boss’ eyes.
For technicians, efficiency, too, is important—but today’s workforce knows to prioritize ergonomics. After all, you don’t want back pain to pull you from the job market before you’re ready. Tools that place importance on body position, support bodily ergonomics and promote the use of the correct muscles, are top sellers for modern-minded staff.
Don’t get tricked into buying your tools from the back of a truck at your next trade show (and don’t let your proteges fall into such a trap, either). Just peruse the following pages and build the toolbox that fits your fancy.
