Welcome to the first issue of Colmore Life magazine for 2025!
We’re now in the second year of a fiveyear BID4 term and I can confidently say the future has never looked brighter for Colmore Business District.
This year begins with a truly special event – Birmingham Light Festival. This dazzling celebration of art, light, and community is illuminating our city this February, and you can find more details about the programme in the following pages. We at Colmore BID are thrilled to play a pivotal role in making this event happen for the city of Birmingham, from funding the City Curator role, to our investment in our gorgeous permanent light installation at Colmore Square – please do go and see it this year.

everyone. We are deeply committed to using our resources at Colmore BID to provide free, public arts and cultural events, ensuring that creativity and inspiration are woven into the fabric of daily life in Birmingham.
Of course, one of the most beloved events in our calendar is set to return in style in July, the Colmore Food Festival. This iconic celebration of our District’s food and drink venues has become a highlight for locals and visitors. We’re hard at work to ensure that this year’s festival is even more mouth-watering, vibrant, and inclusive than ever before. Mark your calendars for the 4 and 5 July!
On a personal note, one of the things I’m most excited about this year is the return of our Walking Tour events that will offer special insights into the history of our fantastic city.
Thank you to our levy paying businesses, supporters, collaborators, and the wider Birmingham community for the role you play in making all this possible. Together, we create a thriving District.
It’s a privilege to lead the organisation. I’m especially looking forward to seeing how our efforts this year will further enhance the experiences of those who live, work, and visit Colmore Business District.

Big Interview
‘As a young professional I am keen to have an input into making the District an enjoyable place’
Senior Development Manager Hannah Voogd is one of three talented female leaders appointed by Colmore BID to its Board of Directors in spring 2024. Catherine Hendrick finds out how she plans to make a difference
As a child growing up in Solihull, Hannah has fond memories of visiting Colmore Business District. Today she is helping to shape its future. The 27-year-old experienced her first taste of employment in the District through an internship at Savills following university. Inspired by the world of property, she decided to take a master’s in real estate. She then won a place on a graduate scheme at property agency JLL to become a chartered surveyor.
“I enjoyed working on behalf of landlords and occupiers within the District helping them to find their new office space,” explains Hannah. “It was great to be part of the team in a post-Covid world and see how spaces evolved to suit flexible, and hybrid working and support a return to the office.”
Just over two years ago Hannah moved to the renowned property developer HBD, part of Henry Boot, to focus on development.
“I was keen to have a new challenge and help create new spaces within the Midlands,” she says. “As a business, we aim to create better places today, to build a better tomorrow. We focus on three sectors; industrial and logistics, urban development and residential. The schemes I enjoy working on most are our urban development schemes in the Jewellery Quarter. It’s a great opportunity for me to change and influence the built environment and enhance the local community for residents and visitors. It’s also very exciting that many of my friends and peers live within this community and then commute into
our District for work!” One of the projects Hannah has been involved with is Setl – a development of 102 apartments with a roof terrace, co-working lounge, wellness studio and two ground floor commercial units in the St Paul’s area. Thanks to her success at HBD, Hannah has recently been promoted to Senior Development Manager.
“The thing I like most about my job is the variety of tasks I can get involved with,” she says. “My role includes identifying new development opportunities and acquiring new sites, as well as progressing our current pipeline from initial feasibility through to construction and the eventual sale or exit of the asset,” she explains.
“It brings me pride to be able to work with the contractors and deliver
a new scheme with a physical tangible asset upon completion to show off our work. My job is extremely sociable and I am always talking, meeting and networking with familiar and new contacts. This helps build my professional network but also enhances my learning about the market.”
Hannah was keen to join Colmore BID’s Board because, as a young professional, she believes she can bring a fresh perspective and be a representative voice for her peers.
“There are probably three common themes of what young professionals are looking for – opportunities to meet people from all sectors and to enhance their skills and opportunities to experience leisure and hospitality in the District,” she explains.
New challenge: Hannah Voogd of HDB and Colmore BID Board Director
After lockdown Hannah joined the Community Building Working Group to learn more about the BID and expand her professional network.
“From this we created the New Professionals working group,” she explains.“Its aim is to find innovative ways of engaging with new professionals, create volunteering opportunities and nurture the city’s future leaders. It’s also a great way for those who are early in their career or are new to the city to build connections, networks and friendships,” says Hannah.
As a result of chairing the group Hannah was invited to provide feedback to the BID’s Board and when a space became available, she decided to apply. As well as representing younger professionals in the District, Hannah plans to use her role with the BID to promote wellbeing and mental health. She’s already involved in organising events like the Run Club and yoga sessions. She also aims to use her professional knowledge and skills from development to enhance the District’s public realm.
“As part of the BID4 (business plan) we have committed to a greener more attractive District by seeking funding of around £10m for new greening projects. This will keep our District vibrant and welcoming in addition to our continuing annual floral displays and seasonal trails.”
and spaces by holding events for the BID community. “We successfully did an event with Arup pre-Christmas and are keen for more in 2025,” says Hannah.
“Our events are quarterly and focus mostly on networking breakfasts and network and drink events featuring guest speakers with relevant topics to our target audience. As a young professional I am keen to have an input into making the District an enjoyable place and ensuring we support our leisure and hospitality businesses to maximise the opportunities available. We aim to use new venues to host our events to support them, as well as allow members of the District to engage and experience new spaces.”
Sustainability is also an important focus for Hannah. “As part of our BID4 business plan I imagine the District developing in a more sustainable way over the next few years. We will continue to promote this with our annual Clean Air Day and Bike Week as well as encouraging the use of public transport.”
‘I’m excited to see how we make more use of our public space through things like the Art Walk, the Benjamin Zephaniah exhibition and the upcoming Birmingham Light Festival’
Over the next few years, she sees creative and cultural activities playing an increasing role in the District. “I’m excited to see how we make more use of our public space through things like the Art Walk, the Benjamin Zephaniah exhibition and the upcoming Birmingham Light Festival.”
Hannah also wants to continue developing events for professionals, particularly those just starting out, through initiatives like Colmore BID’s Open Your Doors where businesses are invited to showcase their work
Does the Senior Development Manager have any advice for other young professionals who are just starting out? “My top tip is to network. Your network will become your networth. It’s so useful to build up a foundation of connections who can assist you professionally and may also be able to assist personally. I would encourage all young professionals to attend our Colmore BID events.
“I know networking can sometimes appear daunting, which is why we offer a range of events which aim to make it a friendly and easy way to meet new people. By building your network you might also gain opportunities to find mentors who can help guide you throughout your professional career and nurture you as a future leader. Another tip is to not be afraid to ask questions. Learning should always be embraced at every stage of life.”
SHAPING THE FUTURE TOGETHER
WITH BIRMINGHAM’S VOLUNTARY, COMMUNITY, FAITH & SOCIAL ENTERPRISE (VCFSE) SECTOR
Brian Carr is Chief Executive of BVSC (Birmingham Voluntary Service Council). He is a member of the Birmingham City Partnership Board, which recently launched ‘Shaping Birmingham’s Future Together’ – Birmingham’s new City Vision.
BVSC recently marked its first anniversary in the Colmore BID area.
Back in January 2024, we made the move to Latham House on Paradise Street, and we’re hard at work transforming our new space into a vibrant hub for Birmingham’s VCFSE sector.
More than 4,000 organisations make up Birmingham’s VCFSE sector, of which 2,500 are registered charities. Together, they are driving transformative change, improving lives and revitalising communities across the city of Birmingham.
As a membership organisation for VCFSE organisations, a registered charity and Birmingham’s CVS (Council for Voluntary Service), we provide organisations with the support they need to grow and thrive so they can, in turn, support our city.
We’re proud to trace our origins back to 1916 (during WW1) when we emerged from the amalgamated Birmingham Charitable Organisation Society and Birmingham City Aid Society. At a pivotal meeting at the Council House, chaired by Mayor Neville Chamberlain, the Birmingham Citizens Society (our former name) was formed.
As significant contributors to the economy, VCFSE sector organisations range from small local community groups to large multinational enterprises, working with thousands of volunteers and staff.
BVSC led Birmingham’s Vision for Volunteering, working with city partners to support a thriving volunteer environment both now and into the future. BVSC also worked with partners in Shaping Birmingham’s Future Together, and you can find out more about this on our website.
In 2025 we look forward to forging even stronger partnerships with the business community to help shape a brighter future for Colmore, and the city – together. Find out more: www.bvsc.org

Continued commitment in Ladywood
AN UPDATE ON COLMORE BID’S ONGOING COMMITMENT TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
By Kelsey Dwyer, Partnerships and Events Manager at Colmore BID
Colmore BID is located in the Ladywood ward, one of the most deprived areas in the country. This regular feature highlights the activities and initiatives we have delivered in Ladywood, ensuring that we help the community thrive both socially and economically.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to participate in upcoming initiatives and take advantage of the opportunities to give back to Ladywood. We continue to share opportunities on our channels about how you or your organisation can help.
LADYWOOD COMMUNITY PROJECT
We’re pleased to have supported the Ladywood Community Project in their key support schemes. We addressed essential needs by supporting 88 families with food assistance during the summer and autumn months, bridging the gap for those reliant on free school meals.
Our 2024 school uniform donation drive further aided 41 families, ensuring 65 children were equipped with new uniform for the academic year. Thank you to everyone who made kind donations.
At Christmas, we donated £600 of support to the Ladywood Community Project. £200 worth of food hampers were donated directly by Colmore BID and we provided £200 financial support for vouchers and food packs. We also donated £200 to First Class Foundation, which the team used towards their own food pack donation for the Ladywood Community Project.
Each food package included essential items such as bread, cereal,
fruit and even some festive treats. We distributed 50 packages to the Ladywood Community Project before Christmas.
SPREADING FESTIVE CHEER
December 2024 saw a flurry of festive activity aimed at bringing joy to the Ladywood community. Colmore BID partnered with the Ladywood Community Project to bring a range of ‘Santa’s Elves’ volunteers from across the District.
Thanks to the generosity of our local businesses and individuals, families received essential goods, toys, and gifts, ensuring as many children in Ladywood as possible had a present to unwrap on Christmas morning. This project demonstrated the incredible impact of Colmore’s collective community effort and the
spirit of giving. A standout initiative was our Breakfast with Santa, where families gathered for a morning of festive fun. Children enjoyed a hearty breakfast and warm hot chocolate while meeting Santa. Special thanks to Albert’s Schloss and Dishoom for hosting.
WINTER COATS DONATION DRIVE 2025
As the colder months are coming to an end, we have launched a Winter Coats donation drive for 2025. We’re calling on local businesses, parents and the community to donate any unwanted coats and school uniforms to support St John’s & St Peter’s C of E Academy in Ladywood.
Most children at the academy rely on this vital support and your generosity can ensure they have the clothing they need as the seasons change. Whether you have gently used winter coats, uniform items or even new items to spare – we would be grateful for any donations you are able to provide.
“This is a simple yet impactful way to support children in our community” said Kesley. “By coming together, we can help make life a little easier for families in Ladywood.”
To find out more about any of the initiatives mentioned and how you can support them, please get in touch via email: kelsey.dwyer@ colmorebid.co.uk

Reflecting on a bright future for Birmingham
As I reflect on what we’ve already achieved with Birmingham Light Festival, it struck me that the development of this festival really is the story of a city coming together to deliver something extraordinary in the face of adversity.
The five city-centre BIDs have united and invested collectively in this concept for the first time. That investment then allowed us to onboard a team of Birmingham creatives and professionals to bring Birmingham Light Festival to life – not least Birmingham based producers, OPUS.
All of this allowed us to engage wider partners and bring in like-minded funders and collaborators. By like-minded, I mean those who share the vision of Birmingham Light Festival, and what an event like this delivers for the city both short and long term.
I’m so pleased with the fantastic response from Birmingham organisations to our open call for events. We had submissions from some of the city’s biggest cultural organisations, from restaurants and bars to freelancers, artists and creative collectives.
Add into that mix a partnership with United by 2022, a passionate team of over 60 volunteers that bring the festival to life and help visitors discover this very special city of Birmingham.
We hope you enjoy seeing the city in a different light!

Rare Rembrandt etchings show comes to city
A major new exhibition of etchings by Rembrandt is on display at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery between 6 March to 1 June.
‘Rembrandt: Masterpieces in Black and White – Prints from the Rembrandt House Museum’, presents the complete range of Rembrandt’s etchings, highlighting the artist’s centuries-long impact on the field of printmaking through a select
group of works by his forerunners, contemporaries and later artists.
The exhibition, co-organised by the American Federation of Arts and the Rembrandt House Museum, will be on display at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery from 6 March to 1 June 2025.
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669) is widely regarded as one of the greatest artists of all time. Apart from his paintings, he also
produced more than 300 etchings. This is the first time Rembrandt’s etchings have been brought out of the Netherlands as a collection and is the only opportunity to see the exhibition in the UK. The exhibition also includes select comparative works by Rembrandt’s forerunners and contemporaries.
Transport for West Midlands has collaborated with IChoose Birmingham and Birmingham illustrator Milan Topalović to design a series of retro West Midlands bus posters.

Visiting the Light Festival? Be Open minded!
Birmingham’s Open is back. Following the success of 2024’s inaugural Birmingham Creates: The Open, Colmore Business District in partnership with Central BID are once again holding an open call competition for the city’s emerging visual artists.
Birmingham Open 25 is an open call and competition for all printable forms of artwork. It aims to give a platform to talented emerging artists who are producing exceptional work. This year, the theme is LIGHT
WHAT?
Light has been selected as 2025’s theme to coincide with the first Birmingham Light Festival, taking place from 19–22 February. An annual multi-day event, it will bring the city centre to life at night through a gallery of illuminated artworks. Our judges are looking for imaginative responses, that capture light as you see it. Artists may wish to document the festival specifically or frame light in a myriad of other ways. Artworks do not need to be produced specifically for this exhibition; it is entirely optional for the artists to draw from their existing portfolio or create new work. However, we do encourage creatives to use this open call as an opportunity to experiment and showcase their skills in response to the specific theme of Light. Artists may respond across any form of media, although the artwork must be:
• Two dimensional, suitable for reproduction in print for the outdoor exhibition
• In any two-dimensional medium, including photography
• Not created using generative AI
• Created within the last two years
• Original work
• Submitted in a high res digital format (JPG or PNG at least 1Mb in
size) titled ‘Surname-First Name-Title of Work-Medium’

• Working and/or resident in the Birmingham area
• In the emerging stage of their career as a practicing artist
• Over 18 years of age
HOW?
Please submit no more than one artwork using this form: colmorebusinessdistrict.com/ projects/birmingham-open-25light
WHEN?
Submissions for Birmingham Open 25 are open now until midnight on Sunday 30 March 2025. Any works submitted after this time will not be considered.
The open call will culminate with a physical outdoor group exhibition in
Birmingham (Snow Hill Square, Victoria Square) in the summer of 2025.

There is a competition element to the Open call, with the following prizes on offer:
• Overall Winner: £2,000 cash plus a portfolio review

We catch up with Antonello del Mastro, General Manager of District newcomer La Bellezza to find out more about the restaurant’s showstopping arrival
Nestled in the heart of Birmingham’s bustling Colmore Business District, La Bellezza by Big Mamma Group is the city’s newest and most exciting addition to its thriving food and drink scene. With a focus on classic Italian recipes with fun cheeky twists, this vibrant new venue is already making waves among locals and visitors alike. We sat down with General Manager Antonello del Mastro to discuss the inspiration for the restaurant, why Birmingham – and specifically Colmore Business District – was the perfect choice. We also looked at how the team, led by Antonello, plan to carve out their space in the city’s ever-growing culinary landscape.
What inspired Big Mamma Group to open a restaurant in Birmingham city centre?
We first set foot in London in 2019, driven by a passion to serve delicious dishes made from the finest ingredients sourced from our wonderful suppliers. Since then, we’ve grown – and we’re thrilled to now have six vibrant restaurants across the UK. Our journey has always been about more than just growth though; it’s about sharing our love for traditional Italian recipes and bringing a slice of Italy to new places. That’s why we were so excited to open our very first restaurant outside London, embracing both the challenge and the chance to grow our family. And when it came to choosing a location, Birmingham, with its rich culinary scene and love for good food, felt like the perfect
‘We couldn’t be happier to call this place home’
place to continue our adventure!
The Colmore BID area is renowned for its vibrant business and dining scene. What drew the Group specifically to this location in the Paradise development?
Located in the heart of the bustling city, we fell in love with the atmosphere of the Paradise development from the moment we first visited. Being just steps away from iconic landmarks like the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, the grand clock tower, and a vibrant
selection of local eateries is fantastic. We couldn’t be happier to call this place home.
Birmingham has a thriving food and drink sector with a diverse range of offerings. How does La Bellezza aim to stand out in a competitive market?
La Bellezza creates the feel of a corner in Perugia, offering the cosy atmosphere of a traditional osteria. Each of our restaurants are truly unique and I believe that La Bellezza is one of our most beautiful sites to date. Studio Kiki, our incredible interior design team, have managed to bring to life that authentic Italian feel.
The decor invites you to step into a charming courtyard with tumbling ivy and grand walls housing thousands

of vintage liquor bottles. Paintings and artefacts are dotted all over the walls, all sourced from flea markets across Italy and each provides a wonderful story. It truly feels like you are transported to Italy as soon as you step through the door.
What makes dining at La Bellezza so special?
Our team is the heart and soul of everything we do. We’re like one big family, coming together for a meal before each shift, which helps create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Lara, our restaurant manager, brings incredible energy to the team every day and I truly believe that when our team is happy, it shines through in every guest’s dining experience. Each day, we make our pasta fresh – from linguine and ravioli to spaghettoni and mafaldine. And if you’re lucky, you might even get to see some of it being handmade right before your eyes as you dine! We treat every guest like they’re stepping into our own home, and that’s what La Bellezza is all about.
Can you tell us more about your menu and team at La Bellezza? What influences and inspirations shaped the dishes and drinks you’re offering?
Our Head Chef, Mimmo, and his talented team have crafted a classic osteria menu featuring antipasti, primi, pizza, secondi, and dolci. They work with our Italian suppliers, using premium ingredients like creamy burrata from Sapori di Puglia, brought to us by our good amico Paolo. The menu also showcases beloved Italian products, such as Bresaola della Valtellina, cured for 40 days by the expert team at San Nicola Prosciuttificio. Chef Mimmo and his team take great care to understand the seasonality of ingredients, working together to highlight their best qualities. His bold, contrasting flavours shine through on every dish, with his personality and passion evident in every bite. He loves experimenting with tricks and techniques passed down from his nonna, always finding new ways to honour tradition with a modern twist.
How do you think being based in Colmore BID will influence your business, given its mix of business professionals, residents, and tourists?
It’s the perfect place to make new friends. We’re surrounded by business professionals and local residents, many of whom are always looking for great spots to enjoy lunch or host meetings. This environment is full of opportunities to build meaningful relationships, and we already feel like we’re part of a thriving community.
Sustainability and supporting local suppliers are big trends in food. How do these aspects factor into your venue?
We’re incredibly proud to have been the first restaurant group to achieve B-Corp certification in 2018. Our goal is to continue improving, providing the best dining experience for our guests while making a positive impact on both the planet and society. Our menu focuses on top-quality ingredients, with a strong emphasis on vegetarian and vegan options (about 70% of our dishes fall into this category). For the meat and seafood we do use, we are committed to sourcing locally from our excellent suppliers. We’re passionate about supporting businesses like Phillip Warren Butchers, the esteemed Cornish butchers who provide us with their 100% grass-fed beef, lamb, and pork, as well as Flying Fish in Cornwall, who supply us with the finest seabass from the coast.
As General Manager, what are your goals for La Bellezza, and how do you hope to contribute to Birmingham’s food and drink community?
Definitely to create unforgettable dining experiences, continue growing our passionate team, and establish ourselves as a key part of Birmingham’s vibrant food scene. I want La Bellezza to be known for its exceptional food, warm service, and welcoming atmosphere – a place that feels like home for everyone. I’m excited about the future and proud of how far we’ve come. I can’t wait to see what’s next!

How NatWest is nurturing next generation of city talent District News
Dipesh Mistry, Regional Director Branch Network, Central and SW England and Wales for NatWest, St Philip’s Place, explains how the company is working hard to support future business leaders in the District
How does NatWest support new professionals and young people entering the industry? Why is fostering the next generation of talent so important to you?
We have a range of graduate and apprentice programmes to support new talent. With both programmes, participants are given opportunities to work across business areas and franchises so they can learn firsthand how the industry operates in a real bank setting.
We also work closely with our leaders around succession planning so we can develop our people to fit the needs of our business. We also work closely with Employee Led Networks with representative colleagues from across the bank. Our Aspire network, for example, is centred around career development.
Are there specific initiatives, partnerships, or programmes you’ve introduced to help young people in Birmingham gain access to opportunities, mentorship, or leadership roles in your industry?
CareerSense is an employability programme for young people. We work together with our expert partners to provide:
Tools and resources on CareerSense online
Skills workshops for schools aimed at students aged 13-18
Work experience and insight weeks
We host a wide range of resources and tools to help young people aged 13-24. Our CareerSense site is broken down into three main sections based on different age groups, and different stages of the transition from school to work. Our aim is to help young people understand their choices at each stage, and equip them to make the most of them.
NatWest has been a key player in supporting charities and creating social value in Birmingham. Can you share the
philosophy or guiding principles behind your approach to giving back to the community?
We are committed to supporting our communities and have several ways for colleagues to get involved.
Our Community Cashback is a global community programme that recognises employee fundraising and volunteering, and is a great demonstration of us being a purposeled organisation. We have £1 million available in 2025 to support the causes that mean the most to our colleagues.
We offer every colleague three days a year to volunteer – an opportunity to get out into your local community and do something good.
And colleagues can also participate
‘We want to challenge assumptions on what type of people work in a bank and turn the ‘I could never work there’ into ‘I’d really like to work there’.’
in our official volunteering opportunities which reflect the bank’s focus areas: Climate, Enterprise and Financial Education.
You recently took part in the Colmore BID and LTSB (Leadership Through Sport & Business) event. What were some of the highlights for you, and how do events like these contribute to your goals of supporting young professionals and creating social value?
Being able to provide two sessions of one-on-one practice interviews to the 24 students who attended was a privilege. It was brilliant to see how they opened up over the networking lunch. And that there were many good questions put to the panel about their career journeys.
It’s important to us that young people hear about the variety of roles that are in the finance industry and that they are capable of doing them. We want to challenge assumptions on what type of people work in a bank and turn the ‘I could never work there’ into ‘I’d really like to work there’.
What are some of the standout initiatives or partnerships your organisation is currently leading or supporting in Birmingham to promote social value and corporate social responsibility (CSR)?
We are involved in several local partnerships including The Midland Langar Seva Society which sees our Accelerator team and other staff helping to feed homeless people and Let’s Feed Birmingham.
Our colleagues also support a range of charities in their local communities.
How do you engage your employees in CSR activities and initiatives? Have you found that involving your team in charitable efforts has a measurable impact on workplace culture?
I think this is something related to the whole regional board ethos which is bringing all business areas together for a common purpose. Over the summer as part of Team GB sponsorship, we held a baton relay around our St Phillips’ centre which brought colleagues together in the office for a common purpose. We also bought together 30 colleagues across the bank to deliver a financial education and raising aspirations programme to Highfield School. This activity has measurable impact as demonstrated by our recent employee survey scores which saw us measure above the financial service’s norm in the wellbeing category.
What are your organisation’s aspirations for its CSR strategy both in Birmingham and nationally over the next few years? Are there any upcoming projects or areas of focus you’re particularly excited about?
We will continue to encourage colleagues to support charities and causes that are close to them. Not only that, we will also be rolling out our new Financial Foundations course to our business customers which will see tailored financial education courses brought to them for their employees, we will also deliver this free of charge programme to schools and local community groups. We will also continue to support all of those businesses, including those with purpose-led focus, in our Accelerator community, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary at our St Philip’s Place campus this year.
3 NUTRITION TIPS FOR A HEALTHIER WORKFORCE
The Business District-based British Dietetic Association has launched Work Ready, a programme to help keep your workforce healthy and well at work. The BDA create needs-based nutrition programmes for your workers to help improve their resilience, wellbeing and productivity.
3 NUTRITION TIPS TO KEEP YOU WELL AT WORK FROM BDA WORK READY
Choosing the right foods and drinks is beneficial for both our long term health, as well as enabling us to be more productive at work. Here are 3 top tips to consider:
1. Drink 6-8 large mugs or cups of fluid a day. Hydration can affect our levels of tiredness and how we perform at work. A quick way to check hydration is to look at the colour of your pee, simply placing pee charts in bathrooms can create a visual prompt to encourage hydration.
2. Snacking can be a positive part of the day – it all depends what you snack on! A Dietitian can inspire you and your colleagues with practical food demos or digital recipe packs. Some suggestions include small portions of plain nuts, seeds or dried fruit, tinned fruit in juice, fresh fruit with a teaspoon of nut butter or with plain yogurt, veggie sticks or oatcakes/rice cakes with hummus.
3. Fuel on fibre for a healthy gut. Poor gut health can cost a lot of money for employers and employees due to lost work time and reduced productivity. A Dietitian can increase awareness of the importance of gut health via one-to-one consultations or group workshops. A simple tip to increase fibre intake – taste the rainbow by adding in colourful salad and veg to wholegrain sandwiches or wraps.

Extending your lease: Why acting early could save you thousands
Birmingham’s vibrant property market, from the heritage-rich Jewellery Quarter to the modern skyline around Colmore Row, is home to countless leasehold properties. Whilst many leaseholders in the city navigate the ins and outs of leasehold ownership, the challenge of a short lease is often underestimated until it’s too late. Extending your lease early isn’t just a practical move –it’s a financial safeguard that can protect your property’s value and marketability.
Daniel Stones, Director of Davisons Law, based on Colmore Row, explained: “A lease is essentially a timer on your home’s value. Once the lease term falls below 80 years, the financial implications can be substantial, from reduced saleability to increased lease extension costs. Acting early is important, especially in a city like Birmingham where leasehold properties are a cornerstone of the housing market.”
Subject to certain criteria, leaseholders in England and Wales have the statutory right to extend their lease under the Leasehold Reform, Housing and Urban Development Act 1993. Under the statutory process leaseholders are entitled to a further 90 years added to the remaining term of the existing lease. Ground rent also reduces to zero under the new lease. However, navigating the intricacies of this process requires professional expertise. “At Davisons Law we guide clients through the entire journey – from valuation to negotiation to completion – ensuring leaseholder rights are protected and the process runs as smoothly as possible,” Daniel added.
The financial cost of extending a lease involves several factors, including the premium paid to the landlord, legal fees and valuation costs. For properties in Birmingham, where the market is dynamic and competitive, the benefits often far
outweigh these expenses. “A longer lease not only secures your home’s value but also makes it more attractive to potential buyers or lenders.
With Davisons Law’s flagship office located on Colmore Row, the firm is uniquely positioned to offer Birmingham-centric advice.
Daniel added: “We understand the nuances of the city centre market and our deep connections with property professionals allow us to provide tailored support. Our goal is to simplify complex legal processes and empower our clients to make informed decisions.”
Leaseholders face difficult decisions as to whether to proceed with lease extensions now rather than continue to wait for the delayed and much anticipated leasehold reforms.
The changes are intended to simplify and reduce costs for lease extensions and will have a bearing on the premiums and costs payable in connection with lease extensions. Whilst the timeline remains uncertain Daniel said: “It is important leaseholders speak to us and one of our recommended valuers for guidance on the leasehold reforms.”
At Davisons Law, we pride ourselves on a client-first approach. Whether you’re nearing the critical 80-year mark or planning to sell your property, our team is here to help.
“Extending your lease isn’t just about the legal process – it’s about securing your home’s value for years to come,” Daniel said.

Landmarks featured include Chamberlain Square, Birmingham Cathedral, 103 Colmore Row and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

We are grateful to West Midlands Railway for the platform to raise awareness of the District’s brilliant destinations in this key commuter location.”
NEW FLORAL DISPLAYS ADD SUMMER COLOUR TO DISTRICT
Every year, Colmore BID decorates the District with floral features. For over 15 years, your levy funds have been contributing to the city’s floral scheme, with Colmore BID fully funding them for over eight years.
Research has shown that areas with more flowers are less susceptible to anti-social behaviour. Through our Outstanding Places Working Group, we have always been interested in making the area a more attractive place to visit and greening our city.
Melanie Williams, Chair, Outstanding Places Working Group, said: “We are proud to have invested nearly £40,000 annually into summer floral schemes to decorate our District.
“We have a range of hanging baskets, railing boxes and flower towers spread across the District for our businesses and residents to enjoy. Please do send us any images if you see them while you’re out and about!”
