ATASCADERO — Atascadero Police Chief Jerel Haley presented a parking violation law enforcement issue during the Oct. 8 City Council Meeting. Haley asked the Council to reevaluate the wording of the ordinance to help clarify parking violation enforcement practices. “One of the violations we are commonly called on to enforce has to do with time limit parking in our downtown shopping areas specifically,” Haley said. Interpreting the law is not a cut and dry practice, but is filled with nuances and subtleties. NC Cities Renew Deal with Tourism Promoter
ATASCADERO — City of Atascadero staff presented a report to the Council on how best to address the city’s feline overpopulation dilemma. The staff report listed several options to help councilmembers decide how best to shape the policy concerning the overabundance of cats within the town’s limits. At the top of the list was the option to repeal the mandatory pickup ordinance. When animal control receives complaints about a cat, they are required to pick up the stray mouser. The practice currently costs the City $350 per animal to catch and shelter. Staff said that the amount is expected to double if and when the new animal shelter is completed. However, repealing the mandatory pickup requirements does not address the issue of controlling the number of cats. Atascadero is home to several official “cat colonies” that are fed and maintained by residents. These free-range feline colonies are maintained by cat-loving volunteers who feed and look after the well-being of the clowder. Many of them practice TRN, trap neuter and return, to combat overpopulation which invites disease and starvation. On average, a healthy queen (unaltered female cat) can generate up to 10 new mouths to feed a year. Generally, fixed feral cats have their ears clipped so they are not recaught which wastes time, money and resources. A large portion of the problem seems to stem from people who do not use responsible feeding practices, such as day-time feeding and restricted amounts of food, and not spaying or neutering the free-roaming wildcats. Overpopulation is not only bad for the cats. A

NORTH COUNTY — The cities of Atascadero and Paso Robles both continued their contracts with the local public relations nonprofit Visit SLO CAL. The advertising firm promotes tourism to the Central Coast utilizing Transient Occupancy Tax funds collected by the cities. In 2015, the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors approved the nonprofit’s Touring Marketing District in a 5-year-plan to collect one percent of all short-term stays in the County. The assessment was added to each city’s Transient Occupancy Tax. The current contract expires in June of 2020. Visit SLO CAL has been making its rounds to individual cities to promote a new plan that extends the agreement for an additional 10 years and raises the assessment to another 5 percent. ATASCADERO — The City of Atascadero recently announce that the California Park and Recreation Society’s (CPRS) District 8 selected Atascadero’s Donn Clickard as Champion of the Community, and the Atascadero Joy Playground project for their Excellence in Design – Park Planning award. This year’s award recipients will be recognized on Nov. 15 at the CPRS Fall Forum. Clickard was nominated for the Champion of the Community award by the City of Atascadero. This award honors and recognizes individuals or organizations who have contributed significant effort to influence and improve the quality of their community through parks and recreation; and recognizes the contributions of those who volunteer and provide support and services in their community that furthers

Clickard’s nomination recognizes his many years of service and dedication to the youth of our community. Following graduation from Cal Poly, he was hired in 1970 by the Atascadero Unified School District and dedicated his 30-plus year career in education to the District, until his retirement in 2004. Throughout his tenure, Clickard wore many hats, in-
cluding that of teacher, bus driver, coach and Athletic Director. Since his retirement, Clickard continues to work as a volunteer and most specifically to benefit the youth of the community. His dedication is proven by the number of volunteer hours devoted to many of our local groups and organizations. Clickard serves as the Executive Director of the Greyhound Foundation, which works to fund facilities and programs for students at Atascadero High School. One of Clickard’s key pas-
sions is the Foundation’s Lighthouse Committee, a volunteer group dedicated to reducing drug and alcohol abuse by the youth in our community through awareness, prevention, intervention and education. He is also committed to assisting many other local events and community groups such as Hares & Hounds (a 5K and fun run event that supports the Greyhound Foundation); All-Comers track meets; Atascadero Chamber of Commerce including serving as a former Executive Board Member and being honored as a past Chamber Citizen of the Year; and as a long-term School Board member. Due to his dedication, the Atascadero School District has submitted Clickard for this year’s “Board Member of the Year” award for the State of California. The City was pleased to have Donn Clickard recognized by the CPRS District 8 for his lifetime of service to Atascadero and the youth of the community. Beginning in early 2014, the City of Atascadero worked with the local Parents for Joy non-profit organization to de-
velop an all-inclusive needs playground. Parents for Joy is a group of local parents, families and teachers who live with or are associated with children with special needs. This group approached Atascadero City officials with the hope of building a playground that would enhance the safety and involvement of children with special needs, such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorders, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Visual Impairment, just to name a few. The vision of Parents for Joy and the City of Atascadero was to one-day see children of all abilities playing together, raising awareness and building friendships, as well as providing the ability for adult parents, grandparents and other adult loved ones with special needs to have access to their children while at play. On May 1, 2018, the project broke ground and on April 5 the Grand Opening of the fully inclusive Joy Playground was celebrated. This project encompasses all aspects of the mission of Parks and Recreation including
fostering human development, promoting participation in recreational experiences, promoting health and wellness, strengthening community image and sense of place and strengthening safety and security. The California Park and Recreation Society’s Awards Program recognizes the outstanding achievements of agencies and individuals in the areas of community improvements and programming, facility design and park planning, marketing and communications, and professional and citizen leadership. CPRS District 8 is proud to recognize excellence in park and facility design, community initiatives, recreation programs, and marketing and communications. CPRS is a membership organization with just over 4,000 members representing the 535 local parks and recreation agencies throughout the state. Locally -elected school board members -or “trustees� are non-partisan ,members of our community that nideally reflect the diversity of sthe Central Coast. e According to the National ,School Boards Association, a -nationwide organization, 44 gpercent of school trustees are Sfemale (more than the rate of nU.S. House of Representatives -and U.S. Senate) and nearly l25 percent are from underrepsresented ethnic populations. Every school district in the ocountry has an elected board of strustees. These nearly 95,000 ,people make up the largest dgroup of elected officials in the ncountry. In addition to parents, dteachers, staff, and administrators, school board members have a direct influence on the quality of education provided within the communities they represent. Typical school boards convene one-to-two times per month, are open to the public, and provide governance for the schools they represent. Trustees serve four-year terms with staggered terms to prevent large vacancies from occurring all at once. In most

cases, a trustee must be at least 18 years old, a citizen of the state they represent, live in the jurisdiction they represent, are a registered voter, and are eligible under the state’s constitution to be elected to public office. Depending upon the size of the school district most trustees are unpaid or receive a small stipend and possibly health insurance coverage. Board members work from 10 to 40 hours per month on school district governance matters. School districts are complex, multi-million dollar organizations that require a governing board to oversee the needs of students, the needs of families, budgets, and to provide solid stewardship for the nation’s schools. Highly functional school boards fill a vital role in maintaining local districts by always keeping the best interests of students first. Highly organized school boards that understand the meaning of trustee empower the superintendent, district administrators, teachers, and staff to manage their schools. Five key components of effective school boards
are to set a vision, advance policy, demonstrate accountability, play a leadership role in the community, and forge consensus. The last component is often one of the most difficult to maintain in today’s media drenched political atmosphere. The title of this article is “Motion, Second, Discussion� not “my way or the highway.� An effective board is secure with differing votes and often encourages diverse opinions while continuing to forge consensus that moves forward with the majority vote representing the people who elected the trustees. Experienced school board members know that true consensus is not about winners and losers. Motion, Second, Discussion asks all participants to consider and eventually affirm the key points: 1) “Are all voices heard?� 2) “Is the item understood?� 3) “Is it clear that the will of the group has emerged around the proposal?� When a motion is made, if another trustee seconds the motion, the board then discusses/listens/votes on the motion, and true local democracy emerges. I encourage everyone reading this article to thank our locally elected trustees, attend a school board meeting, and engage in the civic process. THS Wraps Up Homecoming Week CONTRIBUTED

TEMPLETON — Homecoming is of course about football, but it is about a lot more. The focus of Homecoming at Templeton High School is to bring the students and the community together. Throughout the week, there were activities taking place to build school spirit, to continue long-running traditions, to make memories and of course Friday night’s football game. At Templeton High, we love Homecoming Week. Students and faculty show their spirit by participating in dress-up days and spirit contests. We wore pajamas on Tuesday, dressed wacky on Wednesday, Twin’d on Thursday and on Fridays we always “Wear Green”. We faced off against each other in lunch-time activities like “Trike Races.” Our junior girls faced off against senior girls in this year’s Puff Ball Championship — a game of kickball under the lights that was played Wednesday night. And while the competition was fierce there were a lot of laughs and a lot of fun

We honored all of our Fall teams and announced our nominations for homecoming court to kick off the week at our opening rally and then named our homecoming royalty at Thursday’s Homecoming Pageant. Friday we held our Homecoming Parade (whose theme was Board Games) with our award-winning band, our first place football team and cheer and 10 floats traveling past Templeton Middle School and Templeton Elementary and then down Main Street to cheers from our community. This year’s winning float,
Rockem’ Sockem’ Robots was created by the THS Link Crew, with second place, Hungry, Hungry, Hippos, going to our Sophomores and third place, Mousetrap going to Friday Night Live, a club that focuses on drug and alcohol awareness. Several of our football players and cheerleaders traveled out to Vineyard Elementary to talk with them about character and determination as well as personally inviting them to join in the festivities at the game and become part of the human tunnel that welcomes in our football players at the beginning of the game. At halftime of Friday’s foot-
ball game against Santa Maria, we announced our Homecoming King and Queen — Evan Asplund and Ashley Lewis — to the cheers of the crowd. The Eagles won 53-10. And Saturday night, students danced under the stars at this year’s Homecoming Dance. Two rallies, a Puff Ball Game, a parade, a dance, grade-level competitions, selecting a royal court, four spirit days, a tailgate, a football game, and a halftime show — it was a busy week. Templeton Completes Drought-Resistant Water Project ter was diverted to Paso Robles for treatment and disposal. The newly completed Upper Salinas River Basic Conjunctive Use Project will catch wastewater that flows within the east side of the district and return these waters to the Meadowbrook Wastewater Treatment Plant before discharging them back into the Salinas River. In this process, the Salinas River underflow provides subsequent conveyance to TCSD wells that divert from the underflow downstream. The amount of travel time via the conveyance of the Salinas River underflow is 28 to 35 months before eventual retrieval. The district has determined that the treatment plant’s discharges augment the river un-
By MELISSA CHAVEZ For The Atascadero News and The Paso Robles Press TEMPLETON — Templeton Community Services District celebrated a long-awaited drought-resistant water supply project recently implemented to meet seasonal and projected annual demands for the unincorporated community. Tina Meyer, TCSD’s engineer for the project, explained that the implementation “actually increased our water supply availability by 240 to 300-acre feet per year, so it is our water supply that is reliable and sustainable for the District.” Until last June, 60 percent of the community’s wastewa-
derflow at its downstream wells with only small conveyance losses because a clay layer in the area generally prevents those discharges from percolating into deeper groundwater. The improvements, which began in 2017, added two new lift stations and about 16,200 linear feet of sewer pipeline to capture and redirect east side flows to the west side collection system. These and more improvements are collectively known as the East Side Force Main and Lift Stations Project. “This is one of the largest projects completed by the Templeton Community Services District,” said TCSD board President Debra Logan. “The project was completed at a cost
of $5.7 million dollars, which was funded by grants and low-interest loans. Completing a project of this size and scope is a remarkable achievement for the TCSD, and a huge benefit to Templeton.” A ribbon-cutting ceremony, hosted by Templeton Chamber of Commerce, took place on September 25. Kristen Handley, who represented Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham, and Courtney Howard, P.E. Water Resources Manager for SLO County Public Works, attended the gathering and presented a certificate on behalf of SLO County supervisors John Peschong and Debbie Arnold, TCSD board members, and others associated with the project.

17th Annual Women’s Legacy Fund Luncheon awards $60,000 to Local Non-Profits
On Thursday, September 26th , The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County’s (CFSLOCO) Women’s Legacy Fund (WLF) hosted their 17th annual luncheon and awarded six local non-profits $60,000 in grants that directly impact women and girls across our county. The highly successful luncheon brought together over 720 women and men to raise over $70,000 to support the needs of women and girls. Grants from the WLF to local nonprofits provide funding for essential programs to empower women and girl across our communities. The luncheon was emceed by mother-daughter duo, Linda Reitner and Missy Reitner-Cameron, both WLF Legacy Leaders and Advisory Committee members. The inspirational opening featured the duo dressed as Wonder Women as they welcomed the crowd to the event. CEO of The Community Foundation, Heidi McPherson then introduced the recipients for the 2019 Women's Legacy Fund support.
Attendees were offered a taste of the incredible impact these organizations create through a powerful video that shared their work. Following the video, Bob Wacker, Chairman, CIO and Partner of Wacker Wealth Partners, reminisced about the giving environment fostered by his mother. Today, he and his wife strive to instill similar qualities in their own family, and he attributed his giving spirit to the strong women in his life. The event’s highlight featured an inspiring speech by Tuti Scott, founder of Changemaker Strategies. An energizing author, Scott assists individuals and foundations to resource critical work using their values to influence their investments, as well as promoting values-based leadership, team building and relationships. Scott encouraged the audience to stand behind what they believe is right, and strive for equality in all aspects of life.

T
he City of Atascadero’s first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education. October is National Fire Prevention Month and is a time when agencies across the country join in spreading the word about fire safety and preven-
tion, as well as overall personal safety. The event has roots that date back to The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that killed more than 250 people and left more than 100,000 homeless. That devastating fire lasted for three days, burned more than 2,000 acres and destroyed about 17,400 structures. This year’s campaign, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” strives to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to be a hero by keeping themselves and those around them safe from fire. There are simple but effective strategies that can help to ensure that every family member gets out safely in the event of a home emergency. Many fatal home fires take place overnight, while
everyone is asleep and when just seconds can make the difference between life and death. In a typical home fire, there may only be one or two minutes total from the time the smoke alarm sounds to safely get out of the house and it’s too late to start making a plan. Escape pre-planning and practice can help give everyone enough time to get out alive. Prepare in advance by making a home escape plan and having the whole family practice it together now. Planning and practicing ahead of time ensures that everyone will know what to do in an actual emergency to quickly and safely escape. Please remember that smoke alarms do save lives; one or more working smoke alarms in a home doubles your chances of surviving a fire.
Smoke alarms are inexpensive and easy to install. Be sure to check that your smoke alarms are working and change the batteries every year in the fall when you turn back your clock. Other common-sense safety reminders at this time of year include never leaving your stove or oven unattended while cooking and if you are faced with a grease fire, immediately cover it with a lid and turn off the heat source. Be sure to place candles in non-tip candle holders and well away from any flammable materials. Never leave lit candles unattended and be sure they are out of the reach of children and pets. Turn off all light strands and electrical decorations before you go to bed or leave your home. Before buying a Christmas tree,
test it for freshness by tapping the base on the ground. If needles fall or can be pulled off easily, the tree is too dry. Find a cool spot for your fresh tree, away from heater vents and the fireplace, and keep it as fresh as possible by watering it often. Be sure to remove it from the home when it is dry, as dried-out trees are a serious fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home. United States Navy Celebrating 244th Birthday By JEFF JARDINE Special to the Atascadero News
H
ere’s a trivia question: Which is older — the United States Navy or the United States of America? If you guessed the Navy, you’d be correct. You might wonder, how did the creation of the Navy precede the formation of the nation? Why not? The Navy even preceded itself. The USS Constitution, being towed by the USS Grebe in San Francisco Bay, July 1940. In the summer of 1775, General George Washington commandeered a flotilla of fishing ships — one named the “Hannah,” for the owner’s wife — and converted them into warships to harass the British Navy.
A month later, and after hearing of Washington’s improvised fleet and its successes, the Continental Congress formally established the Navy on Oct. 13, 1775. That became the traditional birthdate of the U.S. Navy. Nine months later, on July 4, 1776, the founders signed the Declaration of Independence and formed the United States of America. The Navy intended to counter the sea superiority of the British, who had stymied the Colonists’ trade, and had attacked coastal cities in an attempt to maintain the Crown’s stronghold in America. Throughout the Revolutionary War, more than 50 armed U.S. Naval ships moved people, goods, and ammunition, and captured more than 200 British ships, many of which were then used against the enemy.
After defeating the British, the Americans disbanded their Navy and sold off most of the fleet by 1785. But the Barbary privateers who operated out of North Africa, captured American sailors in the Mediterranean Sea that year, and then again in 1793. Initially, the Americans paid “tributes” to the privateers to prevent further incidents. In 1794, President Washington convinced Congress to re-fund a permanent Navy consisting initially of six frigates to combat the privateers. One of those ships is the USS Constitution, also known as “Old Ironsides,” which remains in active duty and is the world’s oldest commissioned warship. It is now a floating museum in Boston Harbor. The American Navy has played a role in every conflict involving the
United States since, including the two wars with the Barbary privateers, and then defeating the British in the War of 1812, to the American Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War I. The Navy overcame the bombing of Pearl Harbor to defeat Japan in the Pacific during World War II, and played significant roles in the Korean, Vietnam, and Gulf wars as well. Today, the Navy has 337,121 active personnel and 101,583 ready reserves, 290 deployable battle force ships, and 10 commissioned carriers with an 11th — the USS John F. Kennedy — nearing completion. trust and have faith in something which we cannot see. The good we’re seeking is within us now. It’s already here. It’s everywhere present, and we just can’t see it. Maybe you’ve identified what you think you want or need to be happy, so you can’t see the overflowing wellspring of magnificent good right here in front of you, permeating the environment all around you. There’s a great story I heard from a friend who visited a shaman in Africa. The shaman was working with a woman who was still psychically married to her past husbands. She had un-forgiveness in her heart and was operating from her unhealed, conditioned past. As such, she was unable to see her soulmate, who was in her current circle of friends. When Jesus said, “You have eyes and see not. You have ears and hear not,” he
was saying that you only see your belief or your thoughts about reality, you don’t see reality. What you see is what’s passing through your awareness and call that real. If there’s something you’ve been seeking to experience in your life and you think it’s not here, please consider that maybe it’s already here, but you just haven’t been able to see it because you’ve been looking for it from your conditioned past. Then do your inner work to raise your vibration, affirming your good, which is all around you. As you heal your past, you’ll begin to see with new eyes, the life you have imagined for yourself. Accept that all of your needs are met; there is good for you, and you ought to have it; the Universe is conspiring for your highest good, and what you are seeking is also seeking you. And so it is.

Executive Director of the Greyhound Foundation which works to fund facilities and programs for students at Atascadero High School. One of Donn’s key passions is the Greyhound Foundation’s Lighthouse Committee, a volunteer group dedicated to reducing drug and alcohol abuse by youth in the community through awareness, prevention, intervention and education. He also assists with many other local events and community groups such as Hares and Hounds, All-Comers track meets, Atascadero Chamber of Commerce, including serving as a former executive board member and being honored as a past Chamber Citizen of the Year and as a long-term school board member. The California Parks and Recreation Society is a membership organization with just over 4,000 members representing the 535 local parks and recreation agencies throughout the state. The Templeton Community Library Association is getting ready for their annual “Big Book Sale” on Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Templeton Park. Yesterday I met a guy named Jeremy out of gas on the 101 at Del Rio Road. Every other word that came out of him was profanity. By the time we got a gallon of gas in his car and some cold water to drink, he had told his life story (a very sad tale) and I had told him about the God who still loves him. In tears, he received the good news and stopped cursing. It’s amazing what the gospel can do! How different everything looks when you realize who you are and where you are in Christ Jesus.

They loved spending time with all the kids and grandkids, and they loved to camp in Yosemite each year with family. David loved camping, because he could talk to all his “neighbors” — he was truly a friend to all. David was predeceased by his parents and his brother Whidden Mosher. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Freida Mosher, and by his daughters Mary ( John) Hansen of Palo Alto, MaryLou (Shorty) Lynch of Atascadero, and Kim (Rich) Venturi of Willits. He had six grandchildren, Lori Smith (Matt) of San Antonio, Texas, Brandi Lynch of Atascadero, Kimberly Dolci (Adam) of Watertown, NY, Christopher Hansen of Belmont, Eli Mosher of Willits, and Justin Mosher (Megan)
of Hubert, NC. He had eight great-grandchildren, Kaylee Gibbons, Justice Gibbons, Madison Smith, Trevor Smith, Treyton, Alahana, Carmon, and Reid Dolci. He is also survived by many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. David was the most sensitive, kind and gentle man we have ever known, while still being wise and strong enough to protect us all. He made us all better people by his example and he will live on in all of us forever. Benito. Dottie stepped into the role of vineyard manager, taking charge of grape harvest while Dante worked weekdays for Madonna construction. Dottie was a pioneer in the grape industry, working beside the men, driving the flatbed truck, loaded with wooden grape boxes, full of Zinfandel grapes. Dante’s mother Caterina was surprised that this city girl from Chicago could adjust so easily into the role of farmer, wife, and mother, earning the respect of the Dusi family. Dottie was vocal in championing causes that helped the community. As a young moth-
er, she joined the Templeton Unified School District school board, where decisions were made to benefit students. She was instrumental in raising money for the school. It was Dottie that orchestrated large fundraisers in the 1960’s, so that the Templeton High School band program could purchase band uniforms, which the kids proudly wore, marching in parades and entered competitions. Dottie got involved in the Relay for Life, raising money for cancer, after her daughter Kathy died of breast cancer in 2005. She volunteered at our local hospital. Dottie was a person that got involved, and she made a difference in people’s lives. Dottie’s love of travel began when she took her three children back to Chicago by train to visit her family. She was very independent, and after her children were grown, Dottie traveled the world. Smart, curious, she would go off to learn about other cultures, and see the beauty of it all. Her favorite trip was
to Africa, but so many places topped her list of favorites. Dottie had enthusiasm about people and places. She inspired her children, grandchildren and other family members to follow her example to get out in the world and experience things. Ocean cruises were her favorite past time. If you said the word “Go,” Dottie asked, “WHEN?!” This inquisitive woman learned to paint, she learned flower design, working at Arlyne’s Flowers. She learned the artistry of stained glass from her daughter Kathy. They worked side by side for many years, designing and making stained glass windows, installing them in homes and churches throughout the community. In the past few years, the family opened a winery and tasting room. Dottie became the “hostess.” She loved people and the social setting. Dottie came to the winery every day to share stories of the wine history of Paso Robles. Dottie lived and died on the vineyard
that had been her home for 70 years. Dorothy is survived by her sons, Rick (Teresa) and Mike ( Joni); grandchildren Michael, Matt, Janell, Kyle, and Trevor Dusi; great-grandchildren Dante, Delaney and Parker Benito; her brother Don Steppie (Donna); sister Bonnie; and sister-in-law Earnestine Dusi; nieces Gina Dusi, Barbara, and Michelle Ventura; nephews Michael Steppie, Rich and Mark, as well as many great-nieces and nephews. Dottie’s little terrier Duffy, who never left her side, is grieving like the rest of us. Heartfelt thanks for the care and companionship that a special team of women provided to Dottie every day: Pat, Louise, Mary, Christina, Judy, Lorea, Patty and Pam. Also the warmest appreciation, and thanks to Wilshire Hospice: Nancy, Joni, Shannon, Chris, Berkeley and others, for the amazing medical and personal care they provided for Dottie in her home, and the support they gave to us, her family.

David was quite musically talented; he sang a solo in church at age 5, played ragtime piano that he played by ear, strummed his “uke” steel ukelele and played his C melody saxophone with out a single lesson. dren who they raised in Palo Alto, and divorced as very good friends 17 years later. David spent 20 years working for Stanford University as a glass blower, blowing all kinds of vacuum tubes and other sophisticated tubing designs for the professors. He was also an engineering technician in the Stanford Engineering department. David loved building things and built his sailboat by hand in the garage. He could fix anything. In 1974, he moved to San Luis Obispo and started working for Cal Poly as an Engineering Technician, where he worked for the remainder of his career. It was in 1975 that he met the love of his life, Freida at a dance. They were married in 1976, and have had 44 wonderful years together.

Kennedy Club Celebrates 38 Years with Local Guest Days, Party STAFF REPORT
ATASCADERO — Kennedy Club Fitness turns 38 this October and is celebrating with free locals guest days and an anniversary party. Owners Kevin and Barb Kennedy started what was then known as Kennedy Nautilus in Atascadero in 1981. Over the years three
other locations followed: San Luis Obispo, Arroyo Grande and Paso Robles, in that order. Today Kennedy Club Fitness has 16,000 active members and over 50,000 alumni members. Kevin Kennedy credits Cal Poly for being the impetus for growing Kennedy Club Fitness into the only multi-location health club facility in
San Luis Obispo County. “My senior project at Cal Poly was a feasibility study of whether our area could support a health club with multiple locations,” says Kevin Kennedy. “Who would have ever dreamed we’d grow to four club locations and continue serving the needs of SLO County, thirty-eight years later? I am humbled by

PASO ROBLES — The Paso Robles Joint Unified School District board of trustees approved spending as much as $50,000 on a non-audit examination of the district’s finances and alleged fraud during the previous superintendent’s administration. Board trustees on Tuesday night voted 5-2 to set aside the funds to pay Eide Bailly, a certi-
fied public accounting and business advisory firm, to look into the district’s reserve loss, $3 million budget shortfall and alleged fraud perpetrated by previous Superintendent Chris Williams and his administration. Eide Bailly was founded in 1917, has over 40 offices in 15 states and is considered a top 25 CPA firm in the nation. At a later meeting, trustees will select three different areas for the
firm to investigate. Trustee Chris Bausch broached the idea of an audit when relaying comments and questions he’d been receiving. At a previous board meeting, people called for a state audit of the school, following the release of a memo from current Superintendent Curt Dubost, attempting to answer questions from the public concerning Williams’ tenure.
Trustees Joan Summers and Stephanie Ulibarri voted against spending the money, citing the district’s ongoing financial problems. The firm estimated it would cost the District $75,000 to determine “the causes for the reduction to the fund balance over recent history, recommend improvement to policies and procedures and assess fraud risk.” Trustees had concerns and
capped it at $50,000. The district’s reserves dropped to 0.96% in September of 2018. School districts the size of Paso Robles are required to have a 3% reserve. The reserves have since been raised to 2.68%. Over the past nine months the district, with trustees’ approval, cut $2.1 million from the 2019-20 budget and is working on cutting $800,000 from the 2020-21 budget.

So what brought this beautiful bear out of the woods on a brilliant fall day? Turns out, it’s the same thing that brings so many tourists to the local wine region. “As the fruit ripens during the harvest season, the bears come down from the adjacent Santa Lucia Mountains to get their fill of premium wine grapes from our estate Margarita Vineyard,” said Karl Wittstrom, co-owner of Margarita Adventures zipline

Santa Margarita Holds 15th Annual Creek Clearing By SIMONE SMITH For The Atascadero News and The Paso Robles Press SANTA MARGARITA — It may be hard to believe the town of Santa Margarita has ever flooded, but any long-time local will tell you about water cresting the creek banks, homes flooding and canoes being paddled down streets. The town has a naturally high water table and combined with creek overgrowth, filling in of natural retention ponds and poor drainage systems it didn’t take much extra rainfall to cause a “100-year” flood to occur more often. However, since the last flooding in 1998, a combination of county drainage improvements and local volunteer efforts have made a difference. Saturday, Oct. 5, marked the 15th year of the Annual Santa Margarita Creek Clearing event, first held in 2004, organized and directed by local residents John Wilkins and Heidi Petersen. SAN LUIS OBISPO — With a whopping donation of $850 to the Woods Humane Society, Wighton’s Inc. is helping this nonprofit organization’s mission toward serving, protecting and sheltering homeless companion animals across San Luis Obispo County. Throughout August and September 2019, Wighton’s Inc. hosted their “Stuff-aPup” Fundraiser at the Inspired Home and Gourmet Expo of Paso Robles and the Inspired Home and Garden Expo of San Luis Obispo, which welcomed all attendees to stop by their booth space to stuff their own pup. With a $10 donation, all proceeds went toward benefiting the Woods Humane Society, resulting in a total of $850 by the end of both events.
“We take pride in knowing these fundraising efforts will go towards finding loving homes for countless pets,” says Ric Schorer, General Manager of Wighton’s Heating and Air Conditioning. “The Woods Humane Society is dedicated toward going the extra mile for animals in need, and we’re dedicated to supporting them in accomplishing that!” This $850 donation will go toward funding the Woods Humane Society’s many services, including its Spay & Neuter Services, Humane Education Programs for Kids, Dog Training Classes, Microchipping, and the Caring Companions Program. SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Central Coast Scottish Society (CCSS) is hosting a Robert Burns Night on what would be the poet’s 261st birthday — Jan. 25. Burns is Scotland’s national bard and lyricist. The CCSS was established in 1983 by a group of San Luis Obispo County residents. Some were Scottish bornand-bred, but most were Americans who were keen to learn more about their Scottish heritage. Another singular event for CCSS is the Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan, which has been held for many years at the Community Presbyterian Church in Pismo Beach and First Presbyterian Church in San Luis Obispo. The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan service was created or “revived” during World War II by the Rev. Peter Marshall, perhaps best known for the biographical book and film “A Man Called Peter.” Marshall was originally from central Scotland and at one time was pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. In 1943, he was the first Chaplain of the U.S. Senate. To encourage Scottish-Americans to sign up to fight on behalf of Great Britain, Marshall recreated the Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans ceremony to instill pride among Scottish-Americans in their Scottish homeland. The ceremony was at that time held in Presbyterian churches of Scottish heritage across the US. Some years back the Central Coast Society organized a well-attended Highland Games at the California MidState Fairgrounds, with the usual components of caber tossing and sheep herding by well-trained Border collies. Haley said the word “shall” in the law caused confusion as to whether a parking time limit could be legally enforced. The Ordinance in question, Municipal Code Title 14. Chapter 2. Article 13. (b) reads Time limit parking zones shall be indicated by green paint upon the top of all curbs in said zones. Green shall mean no standing or parking for a period longer than indicated at any time between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. for any day except Sundays and holidays. The vote passed unanimously through both councils, though there were dissenting opinions brought forth in Paso’s council meeting. The Paso Robles Chamber of Commerce advised against the contract and commercial banker, Bill Enholm, spoke passionately about his disapproval for the contract noting several red flags on the organization’s financial practices. “This organization is light, light, light on its financial reporting,” Enholm said. He told the Paso Robles City Council
that he would not loan $60 million to a company that did not produce a report that calculates projections and assumptions on how the company is expected to perform known as a pro forma report. Enholm also took issue with the proposed Return of Investment. Visit SLO CAL stated that for every $1 acquired by the organization, the County sees a return of $40, making it a 4,000 percent return on its investment. “I have a very hard time believing that when most people deal in ROI that’s a fraction, 20 percent would be a good ROI,” Enholm said. “It’s a ludicrous study, it’s typical of what you see when someone gets paid by an organization to deliver the good news.”
In response to Enholm’s objections, Visit SLO CAL President and CEO Chuck Davison said that part of the agreement with the County involved an annual budget audit. “They approve the auditor and the structure of our audit,” Davison said. He went on to tell the Paso City Council that in the last four years they had audits “with no material weakness.” He also pointed out that the San Luis Obispo County Tax Collector sits on the board as a government appointee. “Our budget is for public record,” said Davison. “It’s included in our board agenda which are public record under the Brown Act, just like all of yours are. That information is completely detailed.”
2013 study by the Smithsonian’s Conservation Biology Institute shows how cats are decimating the bird population. The report stated that the little predators kill 1.4 billion to as many as 3.7 billion birds in the continental U.S. each year. “There’s a lot of homes here that are hoarding [cats] and won’t let us trap,” volunteer cat trapper Mary Kay Patterson told the Council. Patterson said she has been trapping cats for 35 years to fight feline overpopulation. She later told The Atascadero News that she knows of some homes that love to breed kittens and when they get too old simply dump them somewhere. “It is not uncommon for people to dump entire litters of kittens and adult cats or most recently four roosters into our colonies,” said Heather Charmin, a cat colony volunteer. She went on to say to the

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Former Atascadero Greyhound all-time great Sherrie Atteberry was one of seven athletes inducted into Cal Poly’s 2019 Athletic Hall of Fame and was honored at halftime of the Mustangs game against Montana State on October 5. Attebery was honored along with Ramses Barden (star receiver drafted in the third round of the 2009 draft), Brittany Blalock Huang (women’s tennis), Mark
DiGirolamo (wrestling), Garrett Olson (baseball) and Mathyas Michael and Maggie Vessey (track and field). Atteberry has a legacy in Atascadero that reaches back to the 1980s and was part of the first class of former Greyhounds that were inducted into Atascadero’s first ever Hall of Fame class in 2007. Atteberry was a dominant basketball player in high school and continued to excel in college for the Mustangs where she is still No. 3 all-time in rebounding, No. 9 all-time in scoring and has the highest average number of rebounds per game for a season. Atteberry graduated from Atascadero in 1983 and made a habit of breaking down doors during her time on the Central Coast. The for-

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Former Cal Poly and Templeton High School pitching standout Spencer Howard is one of 28 baseball players named by USA Baseball for the World Baseball Softball Confederation Premier12 on Thursday. Team USA will begin its quest for a spot in the 2020 Summer Olympic Games by competing in the WBSC Premiere12 in Guadalajara, Mexico, from Nov. 2-4. The U.S. will play in Group A with the Dominican Republic, Mexico and the Netherlands. Top two nations from Group A will advance to the Super Round in Tokyo from Nov. 11-16. The tournament is the first opportunity for Team USA to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The top finisher from both the Americas territory and Asia/Oceania territory (excluding Japan) will join host-country Japan and WBSC Baseball Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifier champion Israel (with former Mustang pitcher Joey Wagman on the roster) in the six-team Olympic tournament. The final two Olympic berths will be decided in March 2020. The 28-man Team USA roster is made up of 15 pitchers and 13 position players currently not on an MLB 40-man roster.

BREYTENBACH FINISHES SEASON 26-1 Enters Mountain League Finals Projected as the No. 2 Seed By CONNOR ALLEN connor@atascaderonews.com ATASCADERO — Atascadero senior Anneline Breytenbach has been one of the top tennis players in the county since her sophomore season when she teamed up with her older sister, Nicoline, at San Luis Obispo High
School for the PAC-8 tournament and the two blazed their way through the bracket and ended the fall as doubles champions. Last season — sisterless in high school for the first time — Breytenbach played her season in singles, also contributing in doubles due to the move to the Central Section and the new format, and represented Atascade-
ro in the CIF Tennis Championships, winning her first-round match 6-2, 6-0 before falling in the quarterfinals. This season, as a senior, Breytenbach has been nearly untouchable and has cruised through the league with relative ease. Joining the multi-platinum and Grammy award- winner will be the all-female group, Raining Jane. The night — part of this cleverly named tour run — Ladies & Gentleman, An Evening with Jason Mraz & Raining Jane — promises tried and true favorites along with a mix of new material, according to Mraz during a recent phone interview. “We are hitting the road to test out some of the new material as well as bring some positivity back into the atmosphere to balance out any of the negative vibes in

this world,” Mraz said, adding that he has spent the past few weeks working in the studio on songs for a new album. And he and Raising Jane are thrilled to be bringing some of that new material to the Vina Robles crowd. “We’ll be bringing some of the old favorites — some will be remixed and reimagined — and songs the crowd has never heard before. It’s going to be a show filled with musical diversity.” Although he didn’t specifically say which songs will make an appearance at Vina Robles, there’s a chance the playlist will include “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry);” “Wordplay;” “I Won’t Give Up;” “I’m Yours;” and “Lucky” which Mraz wrote and sang with Colbie Caillat. From his first acoustic album, “Yes!,” made up of an 11-song collaboration with Raising Jane, this reporter is hoping to hear favorites such as “Love Someone.” The ladies of Raining Jane — Mai Bloomfield, Becky Gebhardt, Chaska Potter, and Mona Tav-
akoli — also teamed up for his “Know” album to deliver fun songs including “Have It All.” When asked to describe his music genre, Mraz said the terms we’ve come to know over the years seem to be melting away. “There are so many blurred lines between genres that people are now starting to use moods as a way to describe the music they like and want to listen to,” he said. “So, for this tour, the mood is going to be humorous, harmonic, easy listening, include an occasional up-tempo and, as always, the message is going to be positive and love-centric.” That message of positivity and love is what draws many people to Mraz. “Even as a kid, I thought of music as my friend and threw myself into it,” Mraz said. “I like looking back on those times when music was fresh and fun. For me, music has always helped me keep my attitude up because it was a constructive, beautiful thing to do.” As he grew into early adulthood and started doing

public shows, Mraz said he realized people were giving him something valuable — their time and attention. “I had a huge responsibility to make good with that time; to entertain people and give them something delightful, pure, humorous, vulnerable, and authentic; that has always been the driving force for me as a creator,” he said. “I think, ‘What can I do to truly appreciate someone’s time? How can I have some fun with them, educate them or, at the very least, entertain them and give them a happy place to be for those hours they have entrusted me with?’ And, along with that, I find attitude is so important.” Attitude, Mraz said, is part of our life experience and he wants to help keep people focused on the positive. “So, if I’m down or bullied for any reason, it’s going to be that attitude that is going to pick me up and help me to keep going,” he said. “I try to work off of that when I am writing a song, even if I am tired or the world seems to be falling apart. I just try to keep the attitude strong and try to influence people to redirect their attitude the best they can through my words and music.” He’s looking forward to bringing this attitude to the live performance at Vina Robles. “It’s going to be great to be able to share this space, this environment with everyone,” Mraz said. “We get to sing together, be part of people’s lives, and harmonize with the crowd. “Very enthusiastic kids. It’s been a good day. It’s been a great event. Anything we can do to reach the youth,” said Kimberly Bradley, executive director of the San Luis Obispo County Agricultural Education Committee. This is the 17th year for the Great AGventure and many of the 45 volunteer presenters have been coming since the beginning such as Suze Evenson. Evenson teaches the children about owls and their importance to agriculture. Each student also gets to dissect an owl pellet. “It’s fun to see the kids reaction — what they think it is at first to what they know it is at
the end,” Evenson said. She added that at first, the students were a little shy, especially some of the boys to her surprise, to dig into the pellet. “They are a little on the apprehensive side and then they really enjoy it once they get into it and see what it’s all about,” Evenson said. “It’s funny because some of them think it’s poop, but it’s not, it’s barf.” In case you are wondering, the kids wear gloves during the process. “I could stay here for hours,” said a Vineyard Elementary School fourth-grader as she picked through the owl pellet. “I found two skulls,” said her classmate. “I’m done. I’ve seen enough. I’m done,” said another VES
student at their table. Each class was escorted to five presentations — Farm equipment, animals, crops, science and an “AG-tivity” — at the Event Center. They spent at least 20 minutes at each stop. Bradley said in addition to the one-day event a packet goes out to the teachers with lesson plans about a month ahead of the event. Presenters included industry professionals volunteers who are involved in various aspects of agriculture as well as members of North County FFA chapters. Janalee Johnson of Templeton was assisted by her children Claire and Luke for their presentation on horses. She explained that her goal was to give the students some general knowledge.

“If they see a horse in public, in a parade, in a rodeo, at a festivity just general awareness of horse’s behavior and how to approach them and what is safe and what is not safe,” Jenalee said. “We do a little bit about equipment and the general observations of the difference between a full-grown horse and a pony.” A popular interactive activity focused on horsepower was presented by Cal Poly’s Tractor Pull Club. The fourth-graders pulled a weighted sled for a short distance. Each team was timed and the data was converted to horsepower. The club brought their 1,500 horsepower competitive tractor “Mustang Legacy.” The Great AGventure is one of the major events of the San
Luis Obispo County Agricultural Education Committee. A similar event is held each spring in the South County on a smaller scale. The Great AGventure is made possible by the Harold J. Miossi Charitable Trust, making the entire program free to local schools, including transportation costs. Additional sponsors include the San Luis Obispo Co. Cattlemen and CattleWomen’s Associations, San Luis Obispo Co. Chapter of California Women for Agriculture, Umpqua Bank, Paso Robles Events Center and San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau. The program’s emphasis was to demonstrate the importance of agriculture and to develop an understanding of the county’s
vital agricultural industry. “A lot of these students don’t realize how agriculture is all around them in this county and this gives them an insight into the different opportunities they might have as adults and also when they go into high school with 4-H and FFA as well,” said Vineyard Elementary School teacher Tanya Marshall. Her class will study California agriculture later in the school year and she said the exposure at the Great AGventure is invaluable. “We can refer back to something that they had a hands-on experience with rather than it being abstract,” Marshall said, “because although agriculture is all over the county a lot of these kids don’t experience it.”

“It is an honor to welcome a group of immensely talented athletes to Team USA as we begin the qualification process for Tokyo 2020,” said USA Baseball Executive Director and CEO Paul Seiler. “Our goal during the selection process was to identify and piece together a roster that included a combination of both young and veteran baseball players that complement each other on and off the field. These 28 men are exemplary talents and individuals, and we are confident they will represent the United States proudly on the international stage.” Rated No. 88 on MLB Pipeline’s list of MLB prospects, Howard pitched for two teams last summer and is currently playing in the Arizona Fall League for the Scottsdale Scorpions. In three starts so far, Howard has no decisions and a 2.79 ERA with 13 strikeouts and four walks over 9 2/3 innings. AFL opponents are hitting just .179 against Howard. Howard made seven starts for the High-A Clearwater Threshers in the Florida State League, posting a 2-1 record and 1.29 ERA with 48 strikeouts over 35 innings. Elevated to the Double-A Reading Fightin Phils of the Eastern League in late July, Spencer compiled a 1-0 record and 2.35 ERA with 38 strikeouts over 30 2/3 innings, making six starts on the mound. He also made one start in the opener of the Eastern League playoffs against Trenton on Sept. 4, giving up one run and two hits over seven innings with two walks and a dozen strikeouts. Howard also made two brief starts in the Gulf Coast League on a rehab assignment after missing 11 weeks due to soreness in his right shoulder. After a redshirt year in 2015, Howard pitched for Cal Poly in 2016 and 2017, earning first-team All-Big West Conference honors as a redshirt sophomore after finishing second in the Big West with his 2.05 ERA and with his eight wins. Howard struck out 97 batters, third in the conference, over 87 2/3 innings, averaging nearly 10 strikeouts per nine-inning game. Nationally, Howard was No. 23 in ERA, No. 71 in WHiP (1.08), No. 49 in victories, No. 58 in strikeouts and No. 91 in strikeouts per nine innings en route to a spot on Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s All-American second team. Howard was 3-1 with a 2.95 ERA as a redshirt freshman in 2016. A 2014 Templeton High School graduate, Howard earned first-team San Luis Obispo County Player of the Year and Los Padres League Most Valuable Player honors after posting a 7-3 record and 2.20 ERA. The Boston Red Sox lead all Major League clubs with four players from its farm system on the roster. The Philadelphia Phillies have three prospects on the roster, including Howard. Four-time World Series champion Joe Girardi was named the manager of the Premier12 roster in August and is joined by a coaching staff laden with international experience. Bench Coach Scott Brosius, Bullpen Coach Roly de Armas, Hitting Coach Phil Plantier, Pitching Coach Bryan Price, Third Base Coach Willie Randolph and First Base Coach Ernie Young collectively have 21 years of playing and coaching experience with Team USA, winning seven gold medals. The team will train in Surprise, Arizona, from October 2128 at the Kansas City Royals Spring Training facility before traveling to Mexico for the opening round of the Premier12™.

Righetti, one in singles and one in doubles, which brought her season record to an incredible 26-1 as she prepares for the Mountain League finals that will begin on Wednesday. This year has been special for the humble senior who always deflects the glowing admirations of her peers with a complement of her opponent, for several reasons with the lead exciting perhaps being her near unblemished record. “Well, obviously the winning part is fun,” Breytenbach said of what she liked about this year. “But I don’t know, it doesn’t feel like the same as the other years. Knowing that you are doing better is always nice but this year we actually don’t have any people that I didn’t know before. My little sister was the only new person on the team.” This year, Breytenbach’s younger sister, Noella, entered high school, joined the tennis team and promptly ascended into the No. 2 role. Now as a senior, and the older sibling, Anneline has had the chance
to mentor her little sister Noella, who occupied the Greyhounds No. 2 spot as Anneline did under Nicoline before her. Together, the two sisters were a force to be reckoned with until Noella injured her ankle earlier this season playing soccer, another sport both Breytenbach sisters play at a high level and were planning on playing together in doubles as Anneline and Nicoline did back in 2017. “With her, I always know where she is,” Anneline said. “Or I can tell when she will be able to get to the ball or she won’t and also, I can yell at her more than I can yell at someone else who is not my sister,” she said through a smile. The Breytenbach sisters have an advantage that most don’t and it has nothing to do with their individual skill but rather the language they can speak to one another. “It is super fun,” the senior said. “Because we can communicate and we both speak Afrikaans, so we are able to talk to each other really well but now the roles have flipped. Nicolene was always the one that was calm and sometimes I would get a little more — not angry

mer Atascadero great was the first girl to play on a youth basketball team in the city before entering junior high school and needed her father to petition just for her to be allowed to play the sport that was only being offered to the boys. “I went to go try out for cheerleading to cheer for the basketball teams or football teams or whoever at the time,” Atteberry remembered. “And all the boys were playing basketball and I told my dad, ‘Dad, I don’t want to be a cheerleader I want to play basketball.’ So my dad had to petition to allow me to play. So they let me try out and Jerry Clay was one of the coaches at the time and he picked me.” A few days later the youth teams had their draft and Atteberry was officially a part of the team, albeit the only girl on said team, and on her way to becoming one of the best hoopers the county has seen. “I was kind of the first one to get that started because after I played there were more girls that wanted to play,” Atteberry said. “So eventually they came up with girls teams as far as basketball.”
During her four years at Cal Poly Atteberry had huge games including pulling down 24 rebounds in a single game, currently the second most ever in a single game for the Mustangs, and scored more than 1,000 points but when she graduated there was no professional basketball league for women, so she tried something else that she had never played before, handball. Following her senior season in 1987 Atteberry’s coach Marilyn McNeil received word that team USA was looking for potential handball players from college basketball teams because the skills sets translated. “Marilyn McNeil told me she got this request letter asking if anyone was interested and she thought I would be great for it,” Atteberry recalled. “She told us that there was going to be tryouts down in L.A. and she gave me the dates to go try out and so I went and tried and I made the West Team at the time.” A few weeks later Atteberry was back in Colorado Springs training at a team USA facility and training for the US Olympic festival where she would get a shot to make the Olympic team. Ultimately, Atteberry was not chosen but made it as close as one can and did so on only a few weeks of practice.

So now I get it and will think, ‘Hey, that’s supposed to be me, not you.’” Not only are the sisters on the team very close, but the entire team is as tight-knit as any as they have only added one girl in the past two seasons. Bickel has cultivated a culture of togetherness and patience with the Greyhounds because they know they have time with their young team. Like a professional team with everyone locked up under contract, the Hounds brought back all their girls this season and will bring back nearly everyone next year. Atteberry was able to bring a few invited guests with her to the ceremony on Friday night and elected to choose several pillars of the Atascadero athletic community who were instrumental in helping her succeed. “My guests were all from Atascadero High School,” Atteberry said. “Donn Clickard, Jim Stecher, who was my basketball coach in high school, Coach Welsh — he coached track back then as well as football and was my coach for track — and had invited other people as well like Sam Derose but with it being on a Friday night several couldn’t attend.” Aside from being one of the greatest athletes to come out of Atascadero, Atteberry has also taken pride in giving back to her community and served as a member of the Greyhound Foundation and was president of the Atascadero High School Athletic Hall of Fame from 2013-15. “It is very surreal,” she said of the induction. “And I don’t even know that it has actually sunk in yet. But being able to give back to the community and see the kids and just have the relationships that I still have in this point in my life just makes me feel good.”
League, you would never be able to tell based on the morale of the team. Now, with the regular season over and her sister injured, Breytenbach is going to make her run at the singles title and see if she can’t finish her Greyhound career with both a singles and doubles title under her belt. The only girl who stands in her way is the girl that handed her the only loss on her record in Arroyo Grande’s Peyton Dunkle. Like the Breytenbachs, the Dunkles are a tennis family powerhouse as Peyton’s older sister Delanie Dunkle was a multiple County Player of the Year winner and a big reason why the Breytenbach’s chose to play together in 2017, so to avoid her in the singles final. However, Anneline and her sister did face a Dunkle that day in the 2017 final, but it was the younger, relatively unknown at the time, sister Petyon who was only a freshman. Last season, the Dunkle sisters faced off in the singles final with the older sister Delanie walking away with another singles title, but this season the young lefty is the lone Dunkle
at Arroyo Grande and Breytenbach’s top competition. The two will be on opposite sides of the bracket and will only meet in the finals which seems all but certain. “I am definitely looking forward to it,” Breytenbach said. “Because it should be a good match regardless. In years past I have lost 0-6, 0-6, so the first set this year I got up and I think at one point I was even up 2-1 and I was like, ‘Wow I can do this actually,’ but it didn’t really register ‘til after.” Dunkle has proven over the past two years that she can beat Breytenbach as the lefty is undefeated against the senior Greyhound, but Breytenbach’s only win against Dunkle came in her sophomore season in the doubles final in San Luis Obispo. Now in her senior season, the finals are back at San Luis Obispo and Breytenbach will have one last chance to beat her rival and claim a singles title before heading to the Division 1 CIF Tennis playoffs. As a top-two seed, Breytenbach should play two matches on Wednesday but may have to finish her second on Thursday as sometimes the days run long.
