PASO ROBLES — The Paso Robles Chamber of Commerce has partnered with GiftUp! to help local businesses and aid the community during the COVID19 pandemic. PRCC Chief Economic Director said that the organization examined various gift card platforms that would best suit the needs of the community. The Chamber found that the app GiftUp! allowed customers to purchase gift cards remotely, thus keeping with social distancing, but also help local companies generate revenue immediately. “In many of the gift card programs,” Sloan said, “the merchant receives the revenue at the point of redemption, which could be three to six months from now, and our idea was to develop a cash flow bridge to help to get money to businesses now.” During the pandemic, the company GiftUp! decided to waive its usual 3.49 percent fee on the first $5,000 each business generates in gift card sales.

HELPING THE HUNGRY North County food banks see increase in demand for food assistance

By MARK DIAZ mark@pasoroblespress.com NORTH COUNTY — Both the Atascadero and Paso Robles Loaves and Fishes food banks have seen an increase in the demand for food assistance in the North County and will continue operations during the coronavirus outbreak. “We serve a lot of the working poor, and we serve a lot of elderly people,” PLF Executive Director Maria Madrid Sabi said.

Although the organizations share the Loaves and Fishes name, the Atascadero and Paso Robles food assistance programs are separate entities with different hours of operation. Each nonprofit has seen an uptick in people participating in their programs and have made changes to how they are operating to help accommodate the most people possible. Both have waived in-depth, face-to-face interviews generally performed to determine the level of need of the applicant. To deter the spread of the virus, both organizations also asked

By NICHOLAS MATTSON nic@pasoroblespress.com Local distiller meets needs of first responders and other agencies in desperate need by converting the Calwise Spirits distillery to sanitizer production. Proprietor and master distiller Aaron Bergh made the pivot after seeing calls from agencies serving the community’s most vulnerable, and invites additional agencies in need to contact him. “It concerns me that our community servants don’t have sufficient sanitizer at a time when they need it more than ever,” said Bergh, who is known for producing craft gins and rums at his distillery in south Paso Robles. “I realized that my equipment and supply chain expertise could help out these everyday heroes as they work tirelessly to keep us safe.” In a short amount of time, Bergh has started supplying bulk hand sanitizer to the Templeton Fire Department, San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority, the Camarillo Police Department, 40 Prado Road Homeless Services Center, SLO Food Bank, and others. SAN LUIS OBISPO — On Thursday, Mar. 19, Governor Gavin Newsom reminded California residents of the need to give blood during this tumultuous time. “If people are feeling healthy and good and well, then they should definitely being coming out to donate,” said Mona Kleman, Senior Manager/Donor Recruitment for Vitalant, a nonprofit blood collection organization. Blood donations are taking a significant hit during the coronavirus pandemic. With numbers already low during flu season, the coronavirus pandemic shelter-athome orders issued by the County of San Luis Obispo and the State of California have slowed donations to a trickle. Schools, a major source of donations to the medical community, were forced to cancel appointments due to the countywide closures. “We have had multiple cancellations as a result of schools being closed,” Kleman said. “This time of year is a very busy time at high

schools for us. All of the mobile drives that we had set up with Cal Poly in the next few weeks have also been canceled because they have gone virtual.” Serving the community for 50 years, Vitalant operated under names such as the United Blood Services, and some Central Coast natives might remember them as Tri-county Blood Bank. Vitalant operates a mobile medical unit, where it parks in various locations throughout the County an invites

people to donate blood. “We’re scrambling, trying to find places to park our bus,” Kleman said. “Obviously, filling that many voids is very difficult and challenging and I don’t expect that we will be able to do that. The declaration frees up money from disaster relief funds that have been set aside in case of an emergency. The action also helps the City to get reimbursed from the state and federal governments from funds used during an emergency. During a time of uncertainty, communication are key to providing services in a timely matter. Declaring an emergency ensures that all emergency medical services (EMS) and City staff are operating from the same playbook. This is accomplished by converting all operations under the Incident Command System (ISC), which is lead by the city manager, who assumes the role of Director of Emergency Services. All EMS, such as firefighters, Paramedics, and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), must undergo ICS training that establishes protocol on how to deal with specific emergencies. “The emergency declaration has many benefits,” Frutchey said. “First, it converts our operations to the Incident Command System, ICS, which is necessary for us to work seamlessly with other jurisdictions. Second, it authorizes our emergency operations center to activate at the required levels.” The Disaster Council was established to oversee and coordinate disaster preparedness measures in the City. The council is comprised of the mayor, who acts as chair, the city manager, assistant city manager, and the chiefs of the Emergency Services Department. According to Paso Robles bylaws established in 2019, the Disaster Council is empowered to develop and recommend actions for adoption by the City Council, including Emergency and Mutual Aid Plans and Agreements for the City.

Local Churches Offer Online Services and Resources

NORTH COUNTY — In a day and age when people complain that “screen time” is keeping people apart, those same devices are being used to keep people connected to their local communities of faith. A week after San Luis Obispo County issued the shelter-at-home order to curb the spread of COVID-19, local churches all over North County are using the digital world to unite fellow believers. Paso Robles Community Church Lead Pastor Shawn Penn said that he instituted a CAREchain that assigns members responsibility to check on their fellow churchgoers two to three times per week. “We just made that available a couple of weeks ago, and it caught on,” Penn said. Penn said that if a member comes across a need in their outreach, they are instructed to inform the church who will work to provide assistance. “They call the church, we collect that and then we have another team that’s just our response team now, that are younger people that will go do the shopping and take it to their house and leave it there for them,” Penn said. Almost all local churches are providing online streaming or access to recorded sermons online. The Atascadero Refuge Church has been offering online viewing of Pastor Steve Shively’s sermons for years, and the Life Community Church offers online streaming of its sermons every Sunday morning. LLC also provides free Sunday school

videos and ways for teenagers to stay connected as well for those who sign up. The Atascadero Bible church is instituting several venues to keep people connected. “What we’re doing is working towards an interactive community-centered service in terms of our worship services for live streaming our regularly scheduled services at 8, 9:15 and 11 a.m.,” ABC Executive Pastor Jeff Urke said. “We’re using a platform called online.church that we’re hoping to get people to engage during the service with some online chat windows and things.” ABC also created a COVID-19 page for people to request assistance through the church and are implementing a program where church members reach out to their neighbors through “Love Your Neighbor” postcards to ask them how they can be of assistance. The church is offering Zoom video conferencing session where up to 100 people can join in on a chat. Urke said that the church is also working on a daily online chat to help people keep in contact and share personal or communal needs. “What we’re trying to do,” said Urke, “is to keep a sense of togetherness in the community, because everyone is in their homes and they can’t really congregate, so we’re trying to provide online ways to interact with others. And rather than watching online content, we really want people interacting online so you can feel a real sense of community through that online presence.”

San Miguel ‘EMMA’ PROVIDES A MUCH-NEEDED ESCAPE Quieter Than Usual

veryone needs to branch out now and then, so in a moment of weakness I agreed to see the movie ‘Emma’ with my wife just before the theater was closed due to the shelter-at-home orders. “Let’s see something light and fun,” she chided me, and I had to agree some levity was in order after being pummeled with news of the pandemic. So the two of us and one other couple (the only ones in the theater — properly distanced of course) settled in for Jane Austen’s “comedy of manners,” as a little escape from the madness. If you are looking for light, things can’t get much lighter than a story whose main character self-admittedly lives in a “world with very little to distress or vex her.” Emma is a spoiled and headstrong young woman growing up in a wealthy English household during the early 1800s, and everything about her life is soft and slow and comfortable. From the first moment we lay eyes on Emma nearly everything is portrayed in pastel colors — flowers, dresses, houses, interior wall colors and paintings. Hers is a life that is delicate and sheltered, which leaves all sorts of time to meddle in the lives of others without really considering the effects of her manipulations.

Enter young Mr. Knightly. From the first moment we see him he is moving with purpose, even choosing to walk to his appointments rather than taking the luxurious carriage provided. The colors surrounding him are deeper and richer and the walls of his home are covered in dark paintings of important looking people in serious poses. It becomes quickly obvious these two are on a collision course and how that plays out is indeed a great deal of fun. As you can tell from my descriptions, just the sets and costumes themselves are almost worth the price of admission. There are dresses and hats and ballrooms and gardens that are all so visually captivating, but it is Anya Taylor-Joy, playing the title character, that really draws you into the plot. Her big, dark eyes and pouty face will have you shaking your head at her petulant audacity, but also smiling in satisfaction as she learns from her mistakes, and it is her mistakes that drive the action of the movie. Emma, we find, after setting up her governess with a successful suitor, decides she is a skill-

ful matchmaker, who will set up her friend Harriet with a proper husband as well. However, matters of social status, mis-perceptions of the effects of her actions, mixed with a bit of arrogant superiority lead Emma to make a mess of her life and many of the lives around her. I won’t lie, I got lost at times keeping track of who was in love with whom, and how certain characters were related to others. There was a lot of dialog delivered in English accents using antiquated vocabulary and most of the action took place in sitting rooms and dinner parties. That said, I still liked it. My wife loved it. And as I watched Mr. Knightly and Emma verbally spar about matters of the heart, I had to admit it was nice to see a movie bathed in beauty and intellectual banter, set in a world where love is the most important thing and all who seek it will eventually find it. Because of course, everything works out in the end, each character ends up with the mate they deserve, and all returns to normalcy. If only our own world could follow suit.

But do we want to live the rest of our lives the way we have been living them before? Most people will probably emphatically say “yes” to that question. Life was awesome. Most of the people I know feel that way. People might disagree with each other on a lot of things — or we might have moments where we feel alone, inadequate, lost, heartbroken, poor, unwanted, weak, rejected, or so wrong that we feel infectious ourselves and don’t want to give anyone else what we have so we just stay away — but we are alive. We may not truly understand the meaning of life, but there is comfort knowing that something wanted it that way — and while we are alive and with our health, we ought to honor what it is that wants us alive and trust it while it sees fit we stay alive. I hope you know now why I said I’m not really concerned for many others either. It is because I believe the same thing that gave me life, has kept me alive, and has given me an opportunity to do something with this life that I don’t need to understand completely in order to enjoy, has done the same for them. We’re not supposed to know how it all works out. In fact, not knowing is part of the adventure — although it drives my wife bonkers. I believe that same thing that gave me life has given you an opportunity too. It’s given everyone an opportunity — they all just

come in different flavors. We don’t know how this coronavirus thing is going to end up. We don’t know quite what next week will look like, or what next month will look like — but on January 1, 2020, we didn’t know what March 21, 2020 was going to look like (to every season, a turn). All I know for sure, is that you didn’t think it would look like this. We all had other plans. But the thing that is keeping me alive, that gave me life, and now leads my life… it always has the right plan. It is my guide. My faith in it can only be true if I extend that faith to others. Everyone has had the same opportunity to reconcile with life, because life itself is what we’ve all been experiencing this whole time. There are no short lives or long lives. There is only life. So why am I hunkered down, staying six feet away from everyone outside my family if I have such faith? It’s because that is what my guide is telling me to do right now. I’m not supposed to get anyone else sick. I’m supposed to care about other people, even if I’m not concerned for them. They’ll be fine, I’m told. Everyone is OK, I’m told. We’re supposed to see this. We’re supposed to go through this. My 5-year-old had valley fever… he was supposed to go through that. I had kawasaki disease as a young child. I was supposed to have it. What I’m also told, is that there is a difference between what happens to us as a global community and what we do to each other. When one person hurts someone else, that is not supposed to happen. That is considered a misfire. When coronavirus happens, it was meant to happen, and we can prevent

its spread. We are supposed to. This isn’t metaphysical, or spiritual. It is just what it is. If anyone understood it well enough to explain it, we’d have some new books. Instead of getting new books, we just get more books. We’re still waiting for new ones. We have an opportunity right now to learn something very profound about life on Earth — something we can’t learn in school. We have an opportunity to learn about each other and ourselves. Life will probably change dramatically, and it may get worse before it gets better, but this coronavirus has humbled the world. Humility — the knowledge of one’s self. We know a little bit more about ourselves after this. Life should change dramatically, or we haven’t learned anything at all. Well, currently life is dramatically changed and we all hope it is only temporary. We look forward to looking back on this. We look forward to cracking COVID-19 jokes and them actually being funny. We look forward to shaking hands again, and giving strangers hugs. We look forward to waiting in long lines and standing in big crowds. We look forward to the music. We have big plans. We began 2020 with “2020 vision” of hope for greater prosperity than ever before. As a community and as a nation, I hope people haven’t changed those plans, because we are going to get through this, and we are going to be greater than ever, as a community and as individuals. Here’s to working together to make sure we are not still social distancing by July 4, 2020 — we might have an entirely new perspective on independence and freedom by then.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR NON-ESSENTIAL BUSINESSES SHOULD CLOSE Editor, I recently moved to Atascadero. I am in a group that is more vulnerable to COVID-19 and as such I have been spending almost all of my time in my home, my only escape being a walk when the weather is nice. I am dismayed and disappointed at the number of non-essential businesses that remain open in town. I understand that many of these businesses are locally owned and that their owners may be trying to help their employees and to keep their businesses afloat in these tough times. They are jeopardizing the health of all of us to benefit a few. Personally, I will do the following. First, I will patronize the locally owned restaurants that are offering take-out and delivery services. Second, I will patronize the local businesses that have closed once they reopen. Third, I will not patronize those non-essential businesses that choose to remain open. For me these are the right actions to take. I hope everyone stays safe. ite recipe or two and I will include them in this column. I love old recipes that have come down from generation to generation. If you have any like that be sure to indicate where they came from. The following recipe was shared with me by Diane Schneider in Paso Robles. She served this soup at one of our “game night” gatherings at their home. The recipe was given to her by a neighbor when she and Michael lived in Lincoln. The origin of the recipe was a PEO (Philanthropic, Educational Organization) cookbook. The soup is delicious and freezes well. ITALIAN SAUSAGE PASTA SOUP Ingredients: • 2 lb. Mild Italian sausage, bulk or casings • 6 carrots, peeled and chopped • 1 onion, chopped • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 4 quarts chicken broth • 2 (14-oz.) cans tomatoes, diced

• 2 (15-oz.) cans white beans, rinsed and drained • 1 tbs. dried basil • ¼ tsp. Herb de Provence • 2 cups large shell pasta, cooked (following package directions) and dried. • 4 (4-oz.) quarts spinach leaves

Directions: Squeeze sausage from casings. Place in large pot and brown over high heat (crumble as you would hamburger). Drain all fat except 1 teaspoon. Keep that in the pot. Add carrots, onion, and garlic. Stir 5-7 minutes until vegetables are limp. Add broth, undrained tomatoes, beans (already rinsed and drained) basil and Herbs de Provence. You can do this much a day ahead. Just heat, do not boil. Next day (if doing in two steps), bring to a boil, add pasta, simmer approximately 10 minutes. he biblical doctrine of salvation as I have discussed in past meditations deals with God’s loving provision for delivering sinners from the penalty of sin’s condemnation. Jesus clearly taught in John 3:1618 that He was sent into the world because His Father loved sinners and desired to deliver them from perishing. God’s motives for sending His Son were not to “judge the world, but that the

world might be saved through Him” ( John 3:17). A sinner is saved from condemnation by believing that Jesus died for his sins, was buried, and rose physically from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:1-4, John 3:16,18). Jesus clearly said that an unbeliever was ALREADY CONDEMNED. The only solution to not being condemned was personal belief in Jesus. Most people in the world are not aware of their spiritual condition as an unbeliever. This was certainly true of me before I believed the true gospel of grace (1 Corinthians 15:1-4, Ephesians 2:8-9). I thought that I was inherently good and did more good than evil and could earn my own way into heaven. I learned from the Bible that my sins could not be atoned for by good woks (Acts 15:11, 16:3031, Galatians 1:3-9, Titus 2:11, 3:4-7). My sins were atoned

for by the death of Christ on the cross (Romans 3:23-25, 5:8-10, 10:8-9, 1 Timothy 2:3-6, 1 Peter 1:18-19, 3:18). The apostle Paul in Galatians 2:21 declared that if a person could save himself by righteous works, then “Christ died in vain.” If a sinner could save himself by human merit, then Christ would not have been sent into the world to die for him. Only Christ as a substitutionary sacrifice as the “Lamb of God” could pay the penalty of sin through His DEATH ( John 1:29, 36). The writer of the epistle of Hebrews states that God’s salvation is a “great salvation.” God’s salvation is of great magnitude. This is true because of the everlasting benefits and blessings it provides as listed below: • Everlasting life in heaven ( John 3:16, 14:1-6). • Everlasting redemption from

sin’s penalty (Hebrews 9:12). • Everlasting co-inheritance with Christ as His bride (Romans 8:17, Hebrews 9:15, 2 Corinthians 11:2). • Everlasting forgiveness of sin (Matthew 26:27-28, Acts 13:36-38, Ephesians 1:7, 4:31-32, 1 John 2:12) • Everlasting existence in heaven with Christ and other believers ( John 14:1-6, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). • Live forever in an immortal and everlasting body (1 Corinthian 15:42-58, Philippians 3:20-21, 1 John 3:1-3). There are many more benefits that could also be listed. These benefits are ONLY FOR BELIEVERS in Jesus Christ. Your personal FAITH in Christ will make you a possessor of these benefits. Don’t Be like the people in Hebrews 2:3 that rejected God’s great salvation through neglect that will result in not escaping God’s judgment.

PRJUSD Begins Drive-Thru Meal Program By MARK DIAZ

PASO ROBLES — Beginning Tuesday, Mar. 17, the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District will provide a free food drive-thru service for children during the school closure. PRJUSD requires children to be present to receive the meals provided. For any homeless and foster students, or if transportation is an issue for you and you would like access to free meals, please reach out directly to Joseph Williams at jmwilliams@pasoschools.org to arrange for meal drop-off. To implement social distancing and to limit the spread of COVID-19, the program is solely for the pick-up of meals. No meals will be consumed

on-site. PRJUSD officials encourage families to continue to be proactive in reducing the risk of COVID-19 by practicing social distancing at the school site once meals are distributed. The following schools will provide a lunch for the day of pick up and a breakfast. Both meals will be available for pick up between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, beginning on Tuesday, Mar. 17. Meals will be distributed in the parking lot or bus lane at each participating school. Designated pick up locations are Georgia Brown Elementary, George Flamson Middle, Paso Robles High School, and Winifred Pifer Elementary. Meals are free to anybody under the age of 18.

TEMPLETON — In response to the coronavirus pandemic, Tenet Health Central Coast established “screening tents” and Twin Cities Community Hospital. Individuals planning on going to the Emergency Room will be assessed before entering the facility. Twin Cities Community Hospital is monitoring information from federal, state and local public health agencies for current information on the coronavirus, according to a written statement by THCC officials. Hospital officials

affirmed that Twin Cities staff has taken the appropriate steps to guard against the spread of the virus. “As with any communicable disease,” THCC officials wrote, “as our patients enter the hospital in areas such as emergency department or registration, hospital staff are questioning all of their recent travel and detailing symptoms. We evaluate relevant symptom criteria and implement contact airborne isolation, if required, without delay. French Hospital Accepting Donations of Personal Protective Equipment BY MARK DIAZ SAN LUIS OBISPO — In response to an outpouring of generosity from the community, on Friday, Mar. 20, French Hospital Medical Center Foundation provided direction for those who wanted to provide medical donations to the nonprofit medical center in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We are not on short supply,” FHMC Senior Director Marketing and Communications Megan Maloney said, “but we

had a lot of people calling because we are a not-for-profit organization asking how they can help. So, we asked our materials management what are the most important things that we need?” The hospital, operating under the umbrella of Dignity Health, is requesting donations of N95 masks and personal protective equipment. FCMC is also seeking bandanas, clear goggles and, most importantly, PAPR hoods model # 1-133L-5

and #S-133S-5 (PAPR is Powered air-purifying respirator), N95 masks, Clorox or sani-cloth wipes, isolation gowns, nitrile gloves, shoe covers and bouffant caps. Official said that although the hospital currently has sufficient supplies for the days and weeks to come, they wanted to provide information on how people can help. Maloney also said that all donations will find a home even if FHMC does not use

tascadero senior Wyatt Hasch is the Atascadero News and Paso Robles Press Boys Soccer Player of the Year for his versatility with the Hounds, playing excellent defense while also providing an offensive spark when needed. Hasch came highly recommended by multiple coaches in the North County and helped lead the Greyhounds to a 10-12-2 overall record but more importantly, a 8-4 record in the Ocean League and the Hounds’ second consecutive secondplace finish. Playing primarily in the back half of the field, Hasch was still able to score five goals in his senior season which ranked him third overall on the team. The senior was also one of Atascadero’s top distributors with three assists on the year, which also placed him third on the team. However, his main responsibility often came in stopping the opposing team’s top offensive weapon and accepting the challenge every night. The Hounds proved that they could play with any team this season when they put it together and that was never more evident than when they tied Clovis North who lost to the eventual CIF Champions in the Division 1 semifinals. Atascadero tied 3-3 and Hasch recorded one of the Hounds’ three scores. Hasch is also a top track athlete and was hoping to make it to the State meet in his senior season.

empleton sophomore Ashlyn Janzen is our Atascadero News and Paso Robles Press Girls Basketball Player Of The Year for leading the Templeton Eagles to a 10-14 overall record and 5-5 in the Ocean League. At only 15 years old, Janzen very nearly averaged a double-double and was an absolute menace on the defensive end. The sophomore dominated down low, grabbing 15 or more rebounds in seven different games (15 rebounds two-times, 16 rebounds two-times and 17 rebounds 3-times.) while also adding 2.5 steals and a block per game. Janzen averaged a steady 9.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game for the Eagles but would erupt on occasion when the team needed it. Playing primarily power forward with some time at small forward, Janzen erupted against the Hounds for 14 points and 17 rebounds in a close game the Eagles eventually won. Her single-game high in points was 18 while her single-game high in rebounds was 17.

llison Jespersen is our Atascadero News and Paso Robles Press Girls Wrestler Of The Year for dominance this season as a senior in the Ocean League and especially at the CIF Central Section Meet. Jespersen has wrestled for four years and led the girls team this season by serving as an example of working hard in the practice room and success on the mat. The senior also saved her best wrestling for the biggest moments with the most eyes as she took second place at two big tournaments early in the season and at the CIF. Jespersen went 3-1 during her two days at the CIF Central Section meet which placed her second overall in the 126-pound weight class and tied her for the highest CIF placing of a Greyhound wrestler this season for boys or girls. The following weekend she made the trip to the Masters meet and went 2-2 with some of the best in the state. While she did not advance, she wrestled hard, making her coaches and the program proud.

Franklin has operated as the Eagles Athletic Director for the past six years and will now take on a similar position in San Luis Obispo County working for the Special Olympics. “After serving as the Director of Athlet-

ics at Templeton High School for the past six years, my last day will be Friday, March 20,” Franklin wrote in her e-mail. “I have accepted a similar position with the Special Olympics, SLO County, an organization in which I have always been greatly passionate and involved. While I am excited for this new opportunity, there’s also a big part of me that is sad to say goodbye to our wonderful athletes, coaches, and families. the FBI field office in Los Angeles. His first reaction was cautionary. “Am I doing something wrong?” Bergh said. “Is this real? Is this somebody posing as an agent?” The disconcerting feelings are understandable considering Bergh’s family history. During prohibition, the feds shut down his great-great-grandfather’s moonshine operation, and a call from the FBI could certainly have disturbed the family spirits. After sifting through reactionary thoughts, he was assured that it was the FBI in need of sanitizer, and his curiosity turned to surprise. “They are organized, and you would think they have access to supplies,” Bergh said, “but they are out just like everyone else.” Being a local source for a federal agency in a time like this lifted the spirits of Bergh, and he said he hoped others would be inspired to do what they could to help in this time. “They have agents out in the field as part of the COVID19 response team, and they are worried about running out of hand sanitizer,” Bergh said. “This sanitizer is going to make a huge difference in keeping them and the public safe.” GETTING THE WORD OUT First responders, government agencies, and charities in need of hand sanitizer may also contact Bergh at sanitizer@calwisespirits. com. His current pricing — based on existing supply costs — is $15 per gallon, which stands in contrast to the high markups seen elsewhere on hand sanitizer. “I hope to get more of our hand sanitizer out there so that our public servants can safely do their jobs in this time of crisis,” Bergh said. A COMMUNITY EFFORT According to Bergh, the FDA has given distilleries the authority to produce sanitizer under World Health Organization standards. “As far as I know, this has never happened in the United States, it’s

totally unprecedented,” he said. Bergh’s sanitizer is made with three key ingredients: glycerin, hydrogen peroxide, and ethanol alcohol, typically used for making spirits. He is quick to point out that other local businesses have helped him secure necessary supplies, including Cook’s Vanilla, Golden Apple Cannabis, and RS Paul Construction. “These companies have stepped up and helped make a difference,” Bergh said. “This is truly a community effort.” However, Bergh is concerned about possible future supply chain issues and is hoping to crowdsource additional supplies, if needed. “Although I’m adequately stocked right now, I’m concerned about supplies running out, and I may be needing additional hydrogen peroxide and glycerin, as well as large bottles and other containers for packaging,” he said. “I invite anyone who might have inventory or access to these items to contact me.” DISTILLING A DREAM Before turning his 6,000 square foot facility into a sanitizer plant, the 27-year old California native had landed in Paso Robles to produce local spirits with a local flavor. “I got started out of college,” Bergh said. “I was a hobbyist and worked as a home distiller. People wanted to drink quality local spirits, so I decided to go legit.” Perhaps nothing is as legit as the Calwise flagship spirit, Big Sur Gin, made with light sage, bay, and elderberry. “We want to make spirits that give you a sense of place,” Bergh said. “Big Sur Gin is made with grapes and local plants that grow in Big Sur.” The ingredients are sourced through local vendors, but some of it is harvested by hand during Bergh’s hikes through local hills and mountains. Due to the coronavirus concerns and shelter-at-home orders by the State, it is unknown when Calwise will open back up for regular busi-

LIFTING SPIRITS In the meantime, Calwise continues to manufacture sanitizer for agencies. The adaptation from spirits to sanitizer happened quickly. “It was such a day-by-day thing,” Bergh said. “I thought I’d have to restrict my hours and capacity; then we got shut down completely.” Sitting on a supply of ethanol alcohol, and hit with the same wave of uncertainty as everyone else, Bergh hesitated in moving forward. “I didn’t want to start making that and taking advantage of people who need it,” Bergh said. “Then I started noticing agencies calling out for needs. Homeless shelters, food banks, hospitals, and other organizations began to feel the need for an otherwise ordinary industry commodity. With the demand, hand sanitizer became scarce. I didn’t see any cost-effective opportunities or supplies for them,” Bergh said. “I have all the supplies here, and by the time I decided to begin, it took about 12 hours to get started production.” Calwise has since produced 200 gallons of hand sanitizer and is continuing as supplies allow. “It is a supply chain issue,” Bergh said. “It is a matter of connecting the dots, finding out who needs it, and getting it to those people. I’ve always liked working on solving the puzzle of logistics.” By jumping in and helping, Bergh said he hoped to inspire others to make a difference — from volunteering at food banks to delivering meals to seniors — it was about taking action. “You can make a difference in the community,” Bergh said. While Bergh’s focus is on agencies, he is also working on 5-ounce sizes of the hand sanitizer to provide local consumer needs.

hoarding food. Though still able to provide those in need with food, supply chains are being strained. “We get a lot of food from a program called Fresh Rescue,” Vail said. “We get the dated food items from local supermarkets, and normally that’s a good supply for us for dairy, meat and some shelf-stable items, but because the supermarkets have pretty much been wiped out that has dried up almost completely. But we are still getting major produce, and shelf-stable items from the SLO Food Bank and that is sustaining us along with the purchases we make.” Located at 5411 El Camino Real, Atascadero, Atascadero Loaves & Fishes serves the

residents of Atascadero, Creston, Templeton, Santa Margarita, and California Valley. Kleman said that donations aid more than trauma victims and that cancer patients have the greatest need for transfusions. “Often time their ongoing therapy can take months or even years, and during that time period than can receive multiple transfusions,” Kleman said. Prior to giving blood, donators must go through a short screening process than involves answering a brief questionnaire and a minor health examination that takes essential vital readings such as blood pressure, temperature, and pulse.
