The Quarterly Newsletter of the Colorado Auctioneers Association

From the President Doug Carpenter • CAA President Greetings CAA Members: The calendar says its almost Summer, however, if we had to rely on the weather to tell us what season it is we would all be confused. I am happy to see the weather warming up and everyone becoming more active. Your Board of Directors has been very busy the past few months. I am very proud to be working with such a great group of people. One of those Board members is OJ Pratt. OJ is the Chairman of the Legislative Committee. He was responsible for organizing the “Day at the Legislature” on April 16. If you missed this great day please read about it on page 5 of this newsletter. Thank you OJ for all your efforts in organizing this great day for our members. I also want to thank Rich Schur for his efforts in getting a logo revision to present to the members in this newsletter. The comments provided by the members present at the Annual Meeting in January were heard and put into the new logo revision. Please see Rich’s article on page 3. Thank you Rich for the time you spent making this happen. As we look forward to summer, please look at the upcoming member events scheduled for your benefit. Your Board has worked hard to put these events together, and they are for the benefit of you, the member, so please take advantage of these great programs and networking opportunities. I have spent some time during the first 5 months of this year responding to some complaints brought to the Association. Not all complaints received by your Association are complaints about members. Some complaints come to us about non-members as well. And, just because a complaint is received does not necessarily mean that a member has done something wrong. We are living in a time and an economy where business practice of two years ago may not be the business practice we should be using today. Those of you who have not reviewed your contracts, your verbal promises to clients and basically your total interaction with clients - now may be a great time to do so. To be honest, there may not be anything wrong with any of it, however, you may want to tighten it up. Ask yourself the question, “what if I had to go to court?” Would your contract stand up? Clients are expecting more now than they ever have. Values of most goods and services have declined and your clients need to know that. Even when you tell them, they do not hear what you are saying. Everyone thinks their “stuff” is worth more than the “stuff” you sold last week, just because it is theirs. That has been the way it has always been and probably will always be, however, if you stress that point to the client you may not end up in a complaint or court room situation. I had a mentor demonstrate to me on a daily basis that caution is the best road to take. It may take longer, it may take steps that you may feel are unnecessary, but when you are faced with a situation that requires good documentation, you will be the one standing tall in the end. I urge you all to take another look at your best practices and see if they really are the “best” practice. ❖ In Your Service,

Doug Carpenter President, Colorado Auctioneers Association

CAA NEEDS YOUR INPUT ON NEW LOGO By Rich Schur Dear Members: Over the past year, we have been working to replace our 50th anniversary logo, which no longer applies. Some of you have asked why we just don’t keep our previous logo. For many of our members, the logo is used in all types of marketing and advertising including newspapers, brochures, post cards, letterhead, web advertising, and other items. Often this logo is reproduced in small sizes. In addition, often times the set-up and development of the marketing relies on the use of “JPEG” files. JPEG files are square. Our old logo is round. When you use a round logo, there is white space around the logo. If the logo is being used on a white background, there’s no problem. If you use it on a colored background, it looks bad and in my opinion, unprofessional. In part because of this issue, because we no longer can use the 50th anniversary logo, and in part because it is perhaps time for a fresh look, the Board authorized a new logo, and we’re asking for your thoughts and input before we decide. The two logos below are finalists: (with 2 versions of the rectangle logo). Although we all felt the wider logo was attractive, modern and professional, it still has rounded edges which create small problems. It is also substantially wider than what we have been using. The smaller, rectangle logo is more compact, and incorporates the same elements.

CONGRATULATIONS to Everrett Schneider, Rich Schur and Norm Silver

These logos will also reproduce well in black and white. We may yet consider some changes, but we will decide in the near future what our final choice will be. We are very aware that this is subjective, and there may be opinions very opposite of each other. Please take the time to let us know your thoughts. CAA MEMBERS VISIT STATE CAPITOL FOR AUCTIONEER’S DAY Governor Signs Auctioneers Day Proclamation By Dax Gillium Denver, CO – Members of the Colorado Auctioneers Association gathered at the Colorado state capitol on April 16 – one day in advance of the official observance of National Auctioneers Day. The delegation, which was comprised of both directors and rank-and-file members, were present at the invitation of Representative Cory Gardner(R) 63rd District. The group was seated on the floor of the House of Representatives. Their presence was recognized by Gardner to other members of the House. The group also received a proclamation signed by Governor Bill Ritter recognizing Colorado’s observance of April 17th, 2010 as National Auctioneers Day. While at the capitol, the auctioneers met with Gardner and briefly discussed concerns of the auctioneers and the auction industry. One concern, say the auctioneers, is that Colorado’s foreclosure laws need to be changed in ways that better serve people facing foreclosure by using the services of professional auctioneers to market and sell the foreclosed properties. Currently, the entire process is handled by state officials who are not familiar with enhanced marketing and sales techniques that would bring more money for the properties, thus reducing the amount of money owed after a sale. An attempt to introduce such legislation proved to be unsuccessful in 2009. Members and directors on hand for the day’s activities included Larry Deaton, AARE; Casey Giddings, CAI; Director Dax Gillium,CES, BAS, CAGA; Director Butch Hagelstrom; Lu Hays,BAS, CES; former CAA president Walt Partridge, BAS; Director O.J. Pratt,CAI; Director John Schaffner; 2nd vicepresident Rich Schur, CAI, BAS; and current Chairman of the Board David Whitley, CAI, CES. This year’s event marks the second consecutive Auctioneers Day visit to the capitol by CAA members and Directors. ❖

FUN AUCTION TO CHANGE GEARS By Courtney Ostblom As summer quickly approaches, I am always amazed at how fast a year goes by. With that in mind, I thought it would be a good time to remind everyone to begin considering what you will bring to our annual Fun Auction. We are going to be trying something new this year by limiting everyone to one item to sell on stage. In years past, the Fun Auction allowed around three items person. There has been

6

concern that the event is beginning to last too late into the evening. So this year we are simply asking that everyone bring a single item of value so that we may attempt to raise funds for our association in a shorter amount of time. Think big here and good luck in your search for the perfect item! We appreciate your support and generosity and look forward to seeing what our members will be selling this year.

CAA SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE By Butch Hagelstrom • Chairman, CAA Scholarship Committee Greetings from the 2010 CAA Scholarship Committee! This year’s committee consists of Shannon Schur, Courtney Ostblom, Walt Partridge, Phil Black, Larry Deaton and Butch Hagelstrom. The CAA Scholarship Award was designed to benefit children and grandchildren of CAA members. The program identifies and encourages talented and thoughtful students who have demonstrated a commitment to career development. The object of the scholarship is to assist the recipient in attaining a post secondary education. A scholarship may go to a graduating high school senior that is entering a vocational or technical school; or a student presently enrolled in secondary education. As a committee we have reviewed the application process made corrections concerning updating of the dates and deadline for the application process, as well as the contact info. This was done in order to make a timely decision as to the scholarship winner before our annual convention. The following changes were made to the process: 1. A firm deadline date of December 1, 2010, has been set for the receipt of the required paperwork. This will allow sufficient time for

the committee to review the material and make its recommendation to the board before the convention. 2. The CAA will not allow any application to continue thru the process that is not complete and turned in by the deadline. 3. The CAA board is not required to award a scholarship for a year in which there is no qualifying applications. We feel that if there is a “carry-over” of the scholarship funds this could allow for the possibility of multiple scholarship awards the following year, providing that there are qualifying applicants. 4. To add wording into the application that includes students presently enrolled in secondary education as well. The CAA Scholarship Committee is and will always be interested in your input and comments. Please direct questions and comments to Butch Hagelstrom. ❖ Butch Hagelstrom • Buckhorn Auction Services PO Box 306 • Ft. NO EXCUSES By Dani Johnson I’m blown away with the amount of excuses that people can come up with. It’s ridiculous and completely endless how people invent them in order not to succeed. Most people spend their entire life instantaneously choosing excuses. Excuses are so ingrained into us that it becomes a knee-jerk reaction, something we instantly come up with for reasons why we can’t do something instead of coming up with ideas how to make it happen. We’ve been conditioned for excuses by the media, Internet, advertising, and movies. But, what about results? Why aren’t we conditioned for them instead of for reasons and excuses? I’ve always said that the definition of an excuse is a well-planned lie. “Gosh, I’d love to but I’m kind of busy.” “I don’t have the time for that.” “I’m too old (or too young).” “I’m too fat (or too skinny).” “I grew up on the wrong side of the tracks.” I believe that this is the number one roadblock that keeps people from success! Let me share my own personal story about excuses. Twenty years ago when I was homeless during the month of December, Iallowed excuses to take me down a path of destruction. My reasons were real. I had no money and no job. My husband had deserted me in Hawaii for another woman who was in Japan and took off with everything. He drained my bank account and left me with $2.03 to my name and a $35,000 credit card debt with no chance of charging

anything else on them. Nothing was going right and I let these reasons make me homeless and turn to drugs. This was the worst thing I could have ever done. At the beach, I dived into a wave. When I came up, I heard a voice that said “pick up your mat and walk!” I did, and never looked back. The next day, I started a business out of the trunk of my car and made $2,000 in four days. What changed on that next day? Nothing changed. I still had no money. I was still homeless with a husband who had deserted me and a father who hated me. My circumstances were exactly the same. Nothing around me shifted except for one thing—I made a decision. I made a choice. Until I said, “Enough is enough! God didn’t intend for me to be mediocre. It’s time for me to shut up, step up and do something.” That’s when my circumstances began to change. Because I made a decision at that moment, the rest is history. After coaching and training thousands of people all of these years, I’ve found this to be the number one reason for business failure— indecision. In my opinion, making a decision is the number one thing that will get you on the fast track to success! Those that succeeded simply made a decision to do whatever it takes to make it. They made a decision that “enough was enough!” They were tired of looking at two cans of beans and having to choose the lesser priced one because that’s what the checkbook dictated. Until you make a decision to change and do whatever it takes to make it, you will continually be blocked from true and long-lasting success. Do the number one thing that will get you on the fast track to success—make a decision and kiss excuses goodbye! ❖
