AUCTIONEER

The Quarterly Newsletter of the Colorado Auctioneers Association

From the President Lance Nichols • CAA President Greetings CAA Members, Happy Holidays! When you read this newsletter, you will have already celebrated Thanksgiving and will be planning for the end of the year. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and were able to share it with family and friends. It is hard to believe that a year has gone by. With the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012 I hope everyone is thinking of this year’s annual convention in Denver. Your CAA Board recently conducted a meeting where we discussed numerous items of business, and made decisions that will keep the association on the path to continued success. The main item of business was this year’s CAA convention, January 6-8, at the Crowne Plaza Denver International Airport. The convention committee has been hard at work planning this year’s conference, which I believe to be one of the best educational and networking opportunities available to auctioneers. Your 1st Vice President, Rich Schur, has a great line up of speakers who will provide vast knowledge about the profession we all love. The Colorado State Champion Auctioneer Contest will be held on Friday night. The champion will receive a trophy belt buckle, as well as the coveted traveling Chuck Cumberlin “Go Your Best” trophy. Last year’s champ, Adam Kevil, has promised to bring it back this year- right Adam?? The CAA will also put $1,000.00 towards the winner attending the 63rd National Auctioneers Association Conference and Show in July, taking place in Spokane, Washington, where he or she will represent Colorado in the national auctioneers contest in July. Don’t miss the Friday night contest, which is always a crowd pleaser! Each year the board does everything it can to help keep the cost on the convention reasonable for our members. $189 is all you, as a CAA Member, will pay to attend all of the fun events, to listen to a world class line up of speakers, plus five meals. It actually costs more than $189 for each member to attend, but the Colorado Auctioneers Association covers the shortfall. Our association is stable, financially, but we must always look to the future to continue providing benefits such as the convention to our members. It’s not only fun, but also easy to help! Plan to attend the Fun Auction and First Timers Auctioneer Contest on Saturday night. The money raised at this event IS the yearly budget for the CAA. I would ask that each member please bring some great items to sell at this year’s Fun Auction. By bringing superior quality items to the Fun Auction, you are supporting YOUR organization and helping to continue the great benefits of membership. As stated above, this year’s convention is January 6-8th at the Crowne Plaza DIA. The registration forms are included in this newsletter, please use them to pre-register. The hotel also has rooms blocked off at a special group rate, however, you must book before December 30th to take advantage. This year’s convention features speakers of national prominence including; John Nicholls, President of Nicholls Auction Marketing Group in Fredricksburg, VA, and the 2006 International Auctioneer Champion. Sam “the Hitman” Grasso, an award winning professional Ringman, Lead Ringman for the National Auctioneers Association IAC Championship Finals, and author, from Baltimore, MD. Scott Shuman, Partner and Auction Specialist with Hall and Hall Auction Group, and award winning auctioneer from Eaton, CO. And several other acclaimed speakers - please see Rich Shurr’s article for more details on this exciting line up. Thank You all for your membership and active participation in the CAA. I hope to see you all at the convention, but above all, I hope everyone has a safe and joyful holiday season. See you in Denver! ❖ In Your Service, Lance Nichols President, Colorado Auctioneers Association

MEMBER UPDATES CAA Members Donate to Help Family of Pat M. Young II Pat Young, auctioneer & owner of JCPB Estate Liquidators in Loveland, CO, lost his battle with cancer on Friday, September 2, 2011. Pat was a third generation auctioneer and is the 2009 Troil Welton First Timer Bid Calling Champion. Pat had nearly 30 years of auction experience, but only joined the CAA in 2009. He gave credit to our association for helping him grow his business and expand his personal friendships. Pat’s wife Crystal continues to run the company and son John Wayne Young is a budding auctioneer and is following in his father’s footsteps and is assisting with calling the auctions. CAA is soliciting donations to help the family in this great time of need. If your situation permits, we would ask that you consider making a donation to help the Young family. Donations can be made out to Pat Young and sent to CAA, 1685 S. Colorado Blvd., Unit S-160, Denver, CO 80222. CAA has invited Crystal to the convention and is providing her with complimentary registration. We will present her with a check on Sunday at the Awards Banquet. Crystal has stated that she would like to remain active in CAA and is very appreciative

for the support and thoughtfulness CAA has shown the family during this difficult time.

WORLD LIVESTOCK AUCTIONEER CHAMPIONSHIPS By Adele Lind-Nichols Greeley Producers Livestock Marketing Association

2012 will mark the 49th Annual World Livestock Auctioneer Championship (WLAC). The Championship began “to spotlight North America’s top livestock auctioneers and to salute their traditionally important role in the competitive livestock marketing process .” The WLAC consists of three stages- the regional quarter final competition, the semi-finals, and the finals. We’re excited to have the 3rd Quarterfinal competition taking place on January 17, 2012 at Producers Livestock Marketing Association in Greeley, Colorado! Contestants must be sponsored by a traditional fixed facility livestock auction market, be 18 years old, and employed as a livestock auctioneer. The top eight auctioneers from Greeley, and the other three quarterfinals, will move on to the semi-final round of competition. In addition, the previous year’s champion may also compete if he so desires, for a total of 33 contestants. The semi-final round consists of a scored interview (25% of the score), as well as the live auction (75% of the score) where they will sell eight drafts of livestock. Ten auctioneers will then be asked to compete in the finals, where their original interview score from the semi-final round will be carried over and weighted at 25%. Finalists will draw for sale order, and sell 10 drafts of livestock for the remaining 75% of their final score. Judges are respected LMA members and every effort is made to select based on a balanced geographical sampling of LMA membership. The interviews are held in front of a live audience and a panel of five judges and each asked the same three questions. The contestants will be judged on their presentation, clarity in their answers and knowledge of the livestock industry. A separate panel of five will judge the live auction portion of the competition. In the live auction, contestants are scored on ”clarity of chant and voice quality, bid catching ability, conduct of the sale, and would the judge hire this auctioneer ?” Cash and prizes will be provided to the World Titlists by Livestock Marketing Association, national companies, and supporting organizations. Official Rules may be found at: http://www.lmaweb.com/ WLAC/rules.html Please note, the entry fee for the Quarterfinal being held at Greeley Producers Livestock Auction in Greeley, CO must be paid by December 13, 2011! ❖

2012 CAA BID CALLING CHAMPIONSHIPS By Mike Heitmann Once again the fall season has rolled around and the CAA finds itself in the CAHMPIONSHIP CONTEST final stages of planning for this year convention coming up in January. It seems like just yesterday that we were enjoying ourselves with great fellowship, outstanding seminars, great food and facilities, and a couple of great evening entertainment venues with the Championship & Rookie Auction Competitions and the Fun Auction. As the chair of the Championship Bid Calling Contest again this year, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all CAA Auctioneers that have not won the coveted “Silver Buckle” to enter this year’s competition. We are very fortunate here in Colorado to have a great bunch of Professional Auctioneers that always are willing to get up in front of their peers and “Put it all on the line”. So this is my personal appeal for all of you that are considering the Championship Contest to step right up and enter! Take it from me you never know who will come out on top. I personally entered lots of contests for lots of years until I won the prize. Remember the winner of the competition gets a custom designed silver trophy buckle, a $1000 prize to offset you expenses to the NAA International Bid Call Competition at the NAA Conference & Show and will be the recipient of the “Chuck Cumberlin Memorial Traveling Trophy” for your reigning year. Plus you will get the satisfaction and experience that comes with competing and giving it your all. Feel free to call me at 719-683-7237 or 406-450-2051 if you have any questions regarding the contest…I’ll be looking forward to seeing you all enter! ❖

FUN AUCTION - YES, IT’S ABOUT FUN..AND SO MUCH MORE Yes, it is all about the fun but it is so much more. The fun auction is our Association’s largest fundraiser of the year. That is why we are asking each one of you to bring one or more quality items for the fun auction this year. Not only will you have fun getting up to sell your items (if you so choose) but you will also be helping the association to raise the funds necessary to operate on for the coming year. The convention is just over thirty days away, so when you are out Christmas shopping why not pick up an item or two for CAA. Please help us in making this year’s fun auction the best one ever. See you in January ! ❖

WELCOME NEW AUCTIONEERS AND FIRST-TIME CONVENTION ATTENDEES By John Schaffner As membership chairman of the Colorado Auctioneers Association I am always pleased to see new faces at our annual convention. Those new faces may belong to brand new auctioneers or they may belong to someone who has been an auctioneer for years and has just joined CAA. Whatever the case, we want to make all newcomers feel welcome. We are here to help all auctioneers advance and improve their auction business. At the convention there will be two separate contests for the first-timers to help them get acquainted with CAA and to help them meet other members. All new members whether they are new bid callers or not will be given a list of ten questions about older members of CAA. The new members are to find the older member who matches each question and get their signatures. The completed lists will be entered into a drawing with the prize being a free membership to CAA in 2013. The other contest for first-timers will be the bid calling contest to be held just before the fun auction on Saturday night. Auctioneers who have taken their training during the last twelve months will participate in this contest. Each contestant will be given three items to sell. When the bidding is done and the judge’s points are tabulated a winner will be announced. At the CAA banquet on Sunday afternoon the winner will be presented the coveted Troil Welton Memorial Award. ❖
