What’s in a Number? A Legendary 97

ESPN personality Mike “Greeny”

Greenberg ’s Got Your Number pinballs through multiple sports as it counts from 1 to 100 to define which sports legends “own” certain numbers. Many of those digits—like 12 (Tom Brady), 23 (Michael Jordan) and 42 (Jackie Robinson) and 99 (Wayne Gretzky)—appeared on an athlete’s uniform, while others, like 61 (Roger Maris), connect to their feats. Greeny calls golf “his favorite sport,” so if you want to know which golfers own 18, 46, 62, 64, 82 and 97— or why you should care about the numbers 7 and 55, pick up a copy of this entertaining, eclectic debate-starter. $26. When the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame opens its new museum at The Broadmoor this month, it will do so without its longest tenured board member. John Gardner II, who passed away in February at age 97, had served on the board since 1974—one year after the organization’s founding—and was himself an inductee of the Colorado Hall of Fame and the Colorado Senior Golfers’ Association Hall of Fame.

The Denver native competed on the University of Denver golf team alongside fellow future Colorado Golf Hall of Famers Ted Hart and Paul McMullen and was coached by inaugural inductee Babe Lind. He was a Lakewood Country Club member for 81 years, joining as a junior (his father and grandfather both belonged) in 1941, Gardner served a term as club president and captained the club’s annual Schrepferman Cup competition against teams from Denver Country Club and Cherry Hills Country Club for 35 years.

Gardner spent 81 years in the insurance business. He also served as president of the Colorado Golf Association in 1990-91. His countless hours volunteering at state and national championships earned him the USGA’s Ike Granger Award—in recognition of 25 years of service to the USGA. coloradogolfhalloffame.org
