Military Artistic Healing
Thanks to grants and individual donations, Military Artistic Healing classes are offered at no charge. Registration is required. Bemis ArtTrax: Clay Sculpture
Instructor: Cara McKinley Javernick Bemis ArtTrax is a new curriculum created to provide equitable and accessible pathways to the arts. ArtTrax courses introduce the fundamental concepts of painting, drawing, and sculpting through a series of engaging exercises. Emphasis is not on producing a finished work of art but on developing basic skills set through practice and repetition. No prior knowledge or experience in the medium is needed or expected. Beginning Wheel Throwing
Instructor: Jamie Howard Level 0 – This class is for the true beginner with no prior experience in the medium. Level I – This class is for those with some familiarity with the medium. This could include informal use of the medium outside of the classroom. Build on your basic knowledge of throwing and further your technical understanding of clay. More complex functional forms, refinement of throwing skills, and advanced decorative glazing will be demonstrated. This class will review, and critique fired results to foster the development of personal style. The Clay Challenge
Instructor: Maggie Quinn and Rui Haagen Level III – This class is for those who have significant experience in the medium — 2-3 or more classes or a year or more of experience. This is an opportunity to challenge yourself and improve your clay art skills. Experience two unique perspectives from two different Bemis ceramic instructors. The instructors will facilitate a new topic each week. Spend each class creating clay works to meet the challenge. Through self- and peerdirected critiques, watch your throwing skills grow. Recon Watchmen Raku Press Mold Masks
Instructor: Virgil Ortiz Level A – All levels welcome. Using visual storytelling and sculpture, you’ll learn about the central cast of characters from Virgil Ortiz’s screenplay Revolt 1680/2180 and how they shape the fantastical world he’s creating through clay and multimedia art. Ortiz takes the participants of this workshop on a journey through the processes he used to create his latest characters — the Recon Watchmen. Using a raku clay body, press molds, and as many hand-carved details and embellishments as wanted, you will create your own version. Alternative Techniques in Clay
Instructor: Cara McKinley Javernick Level A – All levels welcome. Throwing on the wheel does not have to be in the round, and the wheel does not have to be used in a traditional way! Learn to rethink the potter’s wheel and handbuilding techniques for a unique way to create with clay in this fun-filled workshopstyle class. Animal Sculpting

Unique Platters and Pitchers
Instructor: Rui Haagen Level A – All levels welcome. Wow your friends with your own platter and pitcher set that expresses your personal uniqueness! Start with a platter to learn basic soft slab handbuilding using texturing tools and pre-made patterns or create your own pattern. Then build a pitcher using textured slabs with flat pattern templates. Glazing for textured surfaces will be taught. Let the Clay Speak
Instructor: Sandy Friedman Level II – This class is for those who have taken at least one class in the medium. Student should be comfortable with the basics of how to use and manipulate the medium. Do you want to learn how to work better with clay and develop more advanced techniques? Then this wheel throwing class is for you! This course is open to intermediate and advanced level students. You will learn new techniques to build more advanced forms with the opportunity to pursue handbuilding, sculptural work, and/or a combination of any of these methods. Supply list online. Raku Leaf Shadowboxes
Instructor: Maggie Quinn Level I – This class is for those with some familiarity with the medium. This could include informal use of the medium outside of the classroom. This class, for beginning and intermediate skill levels, will teach the basics of the Raku firing process in creating shadowbox wall hangings imprinted with fall leaves. You will finish with matte and gloss copper or crackle glaze before firing your art to hang and enjoy. Tools and materials are provided, just bring your imagination and join the serendipitous fun of the Raku firing process! Supplies will be provided.
