Art center is masterpiece by Glenn Wallace The Foothills Art Center has been named the 2013 Best of the Best art gallery by area readers. For nearly 45 years the Foothills Art Center has served the Golden community as a place for local artists to display their wares, as well as being a venue to showcase world-class works of art. In that dual role of displaying local talent, and bringing bigger names to town, Foothills has excelled. Currently the center is showing a blockbuster of an exhibit: Degas — Beyond the Ballerinas. Simultaneously, the center is also helping to promote a Denver artist, Robert Gratiot. With great diversity and quality of artwork, the center has contin-

ued to live up to its mission statement: “Leading and inspiring the community through art, education and cultural excellence.” Foothills Art Center has a prominent place in the Golden community, literally as well as figuratively. It is situated high on a hill, perched on a corner between the city’s downtown core and the School of Mines campus. Its distinctive stone structure was built as Golden’s first Presbyterian church. Annual events keep the center an active site through much of the year. There is the long-running and award-winning Colorado Watercolor Association show every spring, the DocuWest Film

Fest showings every fall, and the Holiday Art Market for winter. Most recently the center has delighted the area’s art lovers, by bringing in highly prestigious exhibits, such as this year’s Degas, and Dale Chihuly glassworks in 2012. According to center Executive Director Reilly Sanborn, ongoing and future upgrades to the center will help it attract even more world-renowned artistic exhibits in the years to come. Twin Dragon offers wide menu choices by Tom Munds For more than 35 years, owner Shiou Yun (Wang) Jefferson has greeted the vast majority of customers as they come into the Twin Dragon Restaurant at 3021 S. Broadway. Customers are seated at chairs or in booths where the surrounding decorations are in keeping with the wide variety of Chinese cuisine spelled out on the multi-page menu. “I guess the most popular appetizer is our dumpling,” Shiou said. “The most popular dinner items change, but right now I think the items most ordered are sesame chicken and Mongolian beef.” Twin Dragon Restaurant has won awards for its Szechuan cuisine, and Shiou stressed that every meal is prepared to order, using fresh vegetables and spices. The owner grew up in Korea, went to school in Taiwan and got her master’s degree in Japan. She speaks Korean, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and English. When she came to Denver to

continue her education, she got a job at the Twin Dragon Restaurant at its old location in the 2900 block of South Broadway. The owner eventually sold her the restaurant and she later moved to the present location. Shiou will tell you running a restaurant is demanding and she is at the Twin Dragon 60 to 70 hours a week plus often takes work home. She also wants people to learn about the Chinese culture, and her restaurant has lion dancers come in and perform for Chinese New Year.

by Tammy Kranz For the past year, the auto repair/ service shop at 6995 N. Broadway has had a different name, but many customers may still know Coloradoland Tire as SWIS Tire & Automotive. The Nebrakaland/Kansasland Tire Group purchased SWIS Tire in December 2011 and eliminated the glass portion of the business, but added more mechanical services and services for retail customers, as well as added direct purchase access to Goodyear, Dunlop, Kelly and Mastercraft tire brands. Coloradoland in Adams County was named best auto repair/service in a recent poll done by Colorado Community Media. Nick Phillippi, chief operating officer with the tire group, said the business model of

keeping stores operated as individual locations could be why the company is a success with its customers. “Our managers can make the decisions needed to take care of customers,” he said. “Also there is still a real problem out there in the industry of not being totally honest and transparent and we don’t have that issue.” Customer service is what makes Coloradoland stand apart from other auto shops, Phillippi said. “It’s the way that it’s all done that matters,” he said. “Standing behind your work, being honest even when mistakes are made, that is the differentiator.” Coloradoland provides services for anything doing with the tire, no matter what type of vehicle,

trailer, mower, etc. It also performs all manufactures’ maintenance services on all brands. Most stores also do complete repair work under the car and under the hood. Coloradoland employees 55 full time in the Denver market, six at the Adams County site. “Each store operates as the local auto repair and tire store just like it was in a small town,” Phillippi said. “Competition is tough in the Denver market but we wouldn’t be there if we couldn’t compete and offer our customers both tires and service work in one stop.” Above: Coloradoland Tire has been named “best auto repair/service” in a recent survey taken by our readers. Whatever the case is, Vincenza’s Italian Bakery and Deli has been a Wheat Ridge favorite since 2001. This year’s winner of Best Bakery in Wheat Ridge, Vincenza’s is no stranger to accolades. Several food contest awards plaques adorn the walls of the eatery, located at 8000 West 44th Ave. But that doesn’t mean that winning gets old for owner Greg Allan. “It feels good because we put in a lot of hard work every day,” he said. “It’s always nice to know that the community continues to accept us. Rib City makes memorable meals by Tom Munds An aroma of wood smoke and tangy sauce fills the air at Rib City at 7903 S. Broadway. “We opened this store in 2010,” co-owner Jim Courtis said. “We cook and prepare everything right in our kitchen. We use a 1,000-pound Southern Pridebrand smoker and cook all our meats over hardwood coals.” Diners can chose from an extensive menu that includes all the meats along with side dishes like coleslaw, baked beans and corn on the cob. The choices include sandwich-

es, dinners and a separate list of lunch specials and kids meals. There also is a section with a list of picnic packs that offer choices of meat and side dishes to feed two to four people. Rib City has a license to serve alcohol, but there is not a bar area in the restaurant. Courtis said the most popular item on the menu is the baby back ribs. “Our company imports Danish ribs for its stores because they are smaller, sweeter and have a better flavor,” he said. “We cook and sell

about 700 pounds of baby back ribs a week.” The Littleton store is part of the company started by father and son Paul and Craig Peden in 1989 in Fort Myers, Fla. The focus is to cook and smoke meats that have been basted in signature sauces over hardwood fires. The company awarded its first franchise out of Florida in 2004 to a store in Jefferson County. ing breakfast and lunch in a building once marked for condemnation, the restaurant is the love child of Angela Hooper, who comes with years of experience at flipping hash. Hooper owned the B&B Cafe in Castle Rock for about 30 years. Most of those years were in partnership with her mother, Patty Ann. The two were best friends, business partners and, most importantly to Hooper, mother and daughter. They were a team that was inseparable behind the counter for 25 years. It was Patty Ann who envisioned the cafe that now bears her name, Hooper said. The two had their eye on the Kiowa location for years, but the deal didn’t close until after the death of Patty Ann. Hooper used her inheritance to open the restaurant that Patty Ann “would have loved,” Hooper said. Patty Ann’s opened in 2009 and quickly became a town favorite. Hooper is convinced the feeling would have been mutual from Patty Ann. “My mom would love the people,” she said. “She loved simple

country places where people felt at home.” Elbert County became home for Hooper within a few years after she opened Patty Ann’s Cafe, which is reminiscent of an oldtime diner. Booths line the wall, filled with guests throughout the morning, and a long countertop provides the ideal setting for swapping stories. Patty Ann’s regulars enjoy fare similar to that at the B & B Cafe, making the restaurant’s blueberry pancakes and green chile breakfast burritos a couple of the breakfast menu’s hottest sellers. Patty Ann’s Cafe is at 230 Comanche St. in Kiowa. Hours are 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, for breakfast and lunch; and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sundays, serving breakfast only.

GCB brews up the best

by Glenn Wallace Golden City Brewery (GCB), A.K.A. “Golden’s Second Biggest Brewery,” is in many ways the polar opposite of the Coors Brewery. It is a small, hyper-local business literally tucked into the backyard of a 12th Street house in Golden, focused on serving up small batches of handcrafted beers. It is with that mix of local community focus and tasty brew that GCB has earned this year’s Best of the Best award for favorite brewery. This October will mark the 20th anniversary of GCB, which began when Janine Sturdavant gave her husband Charlie a homebrew beer-making kit. “He started making beer and it

was really lousy,” said Derek Gilmore, the sales and marketing manager for the Sturdavants. As Gilmore will gladly tell anyone, the Sturdavants got better with practice, and soon began selling growlers of beer out their front door to friends and neighbors. Word continued to spread, as did demand for more beer. The machine shop behind their historic Golden house (920 12th St.) soon was converted to brew beer. The old carriage house, once converted into a rental apartment, was changed instead into a tap house. Still, the Sturdavants onetime hobby continued to grow in popularity. “On nice weather days like to-

day though, the tap house would fill up quick and people just started hanging out in their back yard to drink, right next to their kids’ playground toys,” Gilmore said. Eventually, the Sturdavants just converted their backyard into a beer garden to accommodate the crowds. “People just love the idea of sitting outside in the sun, literally in someone’s backyard, drinking. He and his wife collect them from thrift shops and garage sales specifically to create a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. Guests are never rushed, and instead are encouraged to linger. The regulars happily have bought into the concept. “I call it the daytime ‘Cheers,’” Rivero said of the 5-year-old Mainstreet coffee shop. “Everybody’s got their role, and certain seats they sit in. It really is a hub for east Parker.” Rivero likes hearing residents’ conversations, in part because it helps him monitor the community’s pulse. As a Parker council member, he wants to know both the good and bad and will address those concerns if he can. “Everybody comes in — town employees, school district, library employees,” he said. “I very much feel we’re part of the community.” Fika is a Swedish word that

means taking a break, typically over coffee, with friends or family. Rivero’s wife Anna is Swedish and the couple lived there for a while, experiencing “fika” firsthand and enjoying it so thoroughly they wanted to share it with the people of Parker. by Ryan Boldrey After graduating from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 2005, Dr. Jennifer Sibo made the move west, spending a year filling in for Dr. Pat Foley at his Denver practice while Foley was deployed to Iraq. The following year, Sibo opened Peak View Dental in Castle Rock and it has been smooth sailing since. Quickly attracting new customers with a “low-key” atmosphere and all the latest in technology, Sibo built her business on patient referrals and earned Best of the Best honors in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Sibo garnered top honors again this year, putting her at the top among Colorado Community Media readers for the fifth time in six years. Assisted by a staff of seven, she says practicing positive reinforcement with patients has a lot to do with her success. “Some people don’t enjoy going to the dentist,” she said. “It can be intimidating and people tend to be afraid of being lectured or

Parker Heating & Air has been in business for more than 10 years and clearly earned the respect of Parker residents and Colorado Community Media readers. Having been voted the best heating and air conditioning service provider in Parker several times before 2013, it appears that the company is doing something right. Co-owner Laurey York says referrals drive a lot of Parker Heating & Air’s business. There are so many new customers, the company just hired its 14th employee. The beginning of summer is among the busiest times of the year. With the late spring storms, many homeowners delayed seasonal maintenance on their HVAC systems. Now that the weather has

by Jane Reuter Sky Ridge Medical Center, already well-reputed throughout the metro area for quality care, groundbreaking medical procedures and aesthetics, is poised for far greater success. The 10-year-old hospital breaks ground this spring on a $107 million expansion that will add 90 beds, a women’s center, a new medical office building, additional operating rooms and a parking structure. The six-story addition will increase the hospital’s size by about one-third. When the 17-month project is completed in 2014, it also will bring 300 new jobs to Lone Tree. Sky Ridge currently employs 1,100 people within its 425,000 square feet of space. Sky Ridge opened in 2003 on a 57-acre campus adjacent to Interstate 25. Its soaring, circular central tower and well-appointed interior lend it an upscale feeling designed not just to please the eye but to speed the healing process. Its impressive appearance dovetails with a reputation for top-notch care that’s drawn other medical providers to the south metro area.

College foundation invests in the future by Clarke Reader Paying for college is often one of the biggest challenges students have to face before stepping foot in a classroom. For the past 20 years, Red Rocks Community College students have had the school’s community foundation to help them with that. The Red Rocks Community College Foundation has not only been giving students a leg up in getting through school, but it has been voted Best of the Best for a local nonprofit. “In 1993, we provided one scholarship in the amount of $800. This year we will be able to provide over 200 scholarships totaling over $325,000,” said Ron Slinger, executive director of the foundation. “At the same time, we will also be providing over $350,000 in program support to our faculty and staff.” Slinger said that in the last 20 years, the foundation has awarded 2,350 scholarships totaling over

$3.4 million. During that same time period it has also granted over $3.1 million in program support. “We’re an institutionally related foundation, which means that everything we do is in support of the college,” he said. “We advertise our scholarships and programs to all students — current and incoming — and usually get around 400 applicants. We’re able to fund about half of that.” In addition to scholarships the foundation also provides program support and capital needs — such as equipment and construction. Not all of the help the foundation provides comes in monetary form. Slinger said they spend a lot of time working with cities and counties to create partnerships that will help students find jobs once they graduate. “We support these students, and they go on to support the community. The college has a huge economic impact,” he said.

by Chris Michlewicz Everyone has a favorite Mexican restaurant that they recommend to friends and family. In Highlands Ranch, that restaurant seems to be Salsa Brava, which moved into a shopping center on the southwest corner of South Broadway and Springer Drive in July 2011. The Colorado Springs-grown chain chose Highlands Ranch for its first Denver metro location, and the decision seems to have paid off. Having already won 2012 Best of the Best awards for best margarita, happy hour, mexican restaurant and new restaurant, the annual distinction is almost becoming a formality. A popular lunch stop among nearby office workers, Salsa Brava serves dishes like steak and avocado enchiladas and shrimp Telluride, a personal favorite of general manager Scott Morrissey. The shrimp is stuffed with jalapenoes and cheeses and wrapped in applewood-smoked bacon and drizzled with a tomatillo cream sauce. Salsa Brava is health conscious,

using 100 percent cholesterol-free canola oil and avoiding the use of MSG and lard. It features paleoinspired and gluten-free menus. The restaurant also has a weekly running club that meets every Tuesday. Salsa Brava is adept at accommodating kids, going above and beyond crayons and paper by providing stickers and toys. The resturant is also involved in the community, helping schools with fundraisers. By combining food made fresh daily – salsa, chilis, etc. – and an inviting outdoor patio, Salsa Brava has devised its slogan: ”Eat fresh. Live well.”

Photographer provides special attention by Rhonda Moore Terri Gordon always considered herself a photo enthusiast. When her daughter was in high school, Gordon was the ever-present mom behind the camera. In 1999, she “decided on digital,” she said, and soon began freelancing for a local Castle Rock newspaper, eventually signing on as the staff photographer. By 2006, the paper was gone, but the photography seed was firmly planted. Gordon opened TMG Photography as an in-home studio, dedicating herself to projects she loves and customers she picks by hand. Those customers grew in numbers sufficient to select her as Castle Rock’s best photographer … three times over. “I think they enjoy the special attention we give them,” Gordon said. “It’s usually beyond their expectations.” Gordon specializes in portraits, capturing images of infants and children for the family vault. Care is crucial at Plum Creek by Rhonda Moore The doctor is always in at Plum Creek Medical Center. Dr. Jack England opened his practice in 1991 and has since become the doctor of choice for nearly 30,000 people who have visited his medical center, which offers more than just urgent care. Plum Creek Medical Center offers family health, pediatric care and internal medicine, with pediatric IVs, X-rays and blood work all done in-house. It is enough to draw patients like Parker resident Anne Berk, who on one recent visit greeted her favorite doctor with a box of chocolates.

by Ryan Boldrey For the eighth time, the Animal Care Center of Castle Pines will be hanging a Best of the Best award in its waiting room. Not a bad way to celebrate 10 years of business. Established in March 2003 in Castle Rock by veterinarians Brooke James and Shawn Wayment, the practice has grown from a small two-room space with a pair of vets to a full-blown 8,000-square-foot facility with seven, soon to be nine, veterinarians. In addition to the general practice, the independent business has two surgical suites, three wet tables, two full-time groomers and a rehabilitation and wellness center. “It’s been a good ride,” said Jonathan James, owner of the wellness side of the operation. “This is a labor of love. There is not a lot of money being made being a veterinarian. They do it because they are passionate about helping people and their animals and providing great care. It’s really true of the staff that is here.” James said Animal Care Center prides itself on keeping up with the most advanced surgical equipment around, low-cost preventive

Atmosphere, choices rule at Vines Wine Bar

by Chris Michlewicz To some people, there is nothing more relaxing that tipping back a glass of wine with friends after a stressful day at work. The best place to do that in Parker, according to Colorado Community Media readers, is Vines Wine Bar & Bistro. Situated on one of the busiest corners in downtown Parker, Vines has become a destination since opening in August 2005. The outdoor patio is a huge attraction during the warm summer months, but customers can just as easily retreat from the heat by

cozying up on a couch in the air conditioning inside. Co-owners Teresa Engel and Tom Wasilchin say the atmosphere is Vines’ best asset, along with the nearly 80 different types of wines that can be ordered by the glass. Since taking ownership last year, Engel and Wasilchin did away with the light tapas menu and added full lunch and dinner menus. The Wednesday happy hour lasts all night and keeps the onduty portion of the 19-member staff busy.

Getting fit is a hit at gym by Clarke Reader Bobby Zuniga knows exactly what it’s like to struggle with losing weight, and the challenges of finding a workout that fits each individual. A former college athlete who blew out his ankle, gained weight as a result and then worked hard to lose it, he knows what it takes. Zuniga has put his own experiences and insights into action at Fitness Revolution. The gym combines group workouts with personalized recommendations on the best way to lose weight and build muscle. “We offer small group train-

ing (around four to five people) and large group training (around eight to 12 people), but each person’s program is based on their personal goals,” Zuniga said. “Everyone has their own level of progression, and I want to make sure that no one is doing anything they shouldn’t be.” Everything at Fitness Revolution is based on how people move in the real world, Zuniga said. Zuniga said he found that group sessions tend to work better than just one-on-one sessions because of the support they provide. “Working out gets better when you have another three to nine people cheering you on and counting on you to show up — it helps motivate you,” he said. “It’s like happy hour, except you get your workout done instead.”
