CoWest Insurance Group, serving Douglas County since 1931 Laurie Lewis refers to her near 17 years with CoWest Insurance Group as a journey, one in which she would not have expected or mapped out for herself. Whether climbing mountains or just riding the waves, she has always been grateful for the opportunity she has been given to make a difference in the insurance industry, in her community and in so many lives. In a male dominated industry, Lewis has not only succeeded but excelled. She began as a customer service representative but knew she had a passion to sell and while doing so, could educate customers about insurance. She said “if there is one thing I missed as an insurance consumer, it was that no one explained what I was buying, just that I needed it.” But the prior owner, Ernie Bergamo, had other plans for Lewis and asked that she take over their IT automation department, even though she indicated to him she wasn’t quite sure what that was. Regardless she met the challenge and for several years was loading and updating software, incorporating her new “friends”, email and the world wide web. Just when she
was confidently speaking in acronyms and understanding what she said, Bergamo had yet again altered her path and asked that she fill the role of operations manager for the growing agency. In 1998, with retirement for Bergamo in sight, he said she became his clear choice as one of the owners to succeed him, and in 2004, purchased the legal entity, Douglas County Insurance Services, Inc. dba CoWest Insurance Group as majority owner along with her friend and colleague, Ann Pasque, who maintains her CoWest office in Denver. Serving Douglas County since 1931 as Douglas County Insurance Services, Inc. often is relayed to our consumers, however, the agency can be traced back to 1905, known then as the Rock Bottom Agency, which was later purchased by PS Miller and for a time was the Phillip S. Miller agency. CoWest has evolved from a single agency into the corporate office for over 35 affiliated independent insurance agencies servicing the entire state of Colorado. Throughout this growth, CoWest has remained in Douglas
CoWest remains a stable, profitable agency by meeting the needs of employees, customers and communities, while using the highest ethical and professional standards, partnering with the best rated insurance companies and over 90 experienced independent agents statewide, whether in a metropolitan Colorado market or rural town.
County and has recently moved its operations to 4348 Woodlands Drive, Suite 229 in a beautiful two story building overlooking Pikes Peak and the Front Range. As an independent agency, CoWest can put their customer needs first by choosing the insurance carrier that will provide the most appropriate coverage at competitive rates, while A rated companies. Employees are licensed by the state of Colorado and can provide professional and personal services to CoWest customers. And that says Lewis is important, as “Service is their number one product.”
Choice Relationships Service
Lewis feels strongly about community and industry involvement. Active in Douglas County Schools, charities, she continues to maintain her membership with the Castle Rock Chamber and a Chairman’s Circle supporter and sponsor. Currently a board member for the Castle Rock Economic Development Council, her hard work and strong commitment to community earned Lewis the Castle Rock Business Person of the Year award in 2008. In 2007 the Professional Independent Insurance Agents of Colorado (PIIAC) recognized Laurie as Insurance Person of the Year, the highest honor awarded by PIIAC. Each year the award is presented to a member of the independent agency system who has demonstrated outstanding
leadership efforts in their industry. Shortly after she received the award she was asked to serve on its prestigious board and currently holds the position as Vice President. So when Lewis was asked in 2001 to manage the office, hire an outside IT firm, increase her involvement in the day to day operations to soon own the company, she agreed, succeeded and exceled, but not without the guidance and support of insurance companies she represents, CoWest affiliate offices, her business partner and friend, Ann Pasque, and a corporate staff that she says amazes her with their talent and dedication to the company and industry. Lewis reflects on her journey, the years of hard work when in foreign territory, the fear of failure and the skepticism that could have affected her, but she refused to allow it. “In retrospect, says Lewis, I am glad I didn’t map out my own journey or I may never have crossed paths with such magnificent individuals.” Today Lewis focuses on CoWest’s continued expansion in growth, direction and education.

Revisiting TPM and its Founder Since its last feature in Women 2 Watch in 2007, TPM Staffing Services and its owner Jody Audet have seen much success and growth. In April, TPM implemented a direct-hire division that has already proven successful opening a new chapter for the agency. In June, TPM was announced as one of 50 of ColoradoBiz’s 2013 Top Minority-Owned Companies.
Sticking to its motto of service, TPM is growing its hospitality division, training cooks and chefs to cater at special events. Currently, the hospitality division services universities and campuses, convention centers, hotels, banquet halls, sporting arenas, and hospitals. Some of its current customers include Aramark, Tony’s Market, Guckenheimer, Argus, and Sodexo.
TPM Staffing Services is a highly respected and recognized staffing agency known for its quality service, and for being one of the only women-owned and mainly women employed agencies in Colorado. The full service agency employs those in the fields of Administration, Clerical, Retail, Warehouse and Industrial, Customer Service, General Labor, Call Centers, Security, Hospitality, and Special Events among others. TPM offers a variety of work options from entry-level to management, flexible work hours, supplemental staffing, seasonal, part-time and full-time employment.
Although the company is growing and plans to expand its influence beyond the state of Colorado, everyone who knows TPM understands that it will continue to shine as an agency that not only employs but serves those who enter its doors. After more than 15 years, it continues to excel in its goal of meeting the needs of the individual.
To understand TPM’s vision you have to know the woman who started it all. Jody, owner of TPM Staffing since 1993, is the glue behind TPM and its motto, “Large enough to be effective, small enough to care!” With the help of a “seasoned” staffing expert, giving her the start in the business, she grew TPM to be the full service agency that it is today, helping expand its location from the main office in Castle Rock to its three other offices in Denver, Aurora, and Grand Junction. Jody’s passion is to work with people and offer them the opportunity to find proper employment and success in their professional goals. Everyone who walks through
the doors of TPM, knows that they will be greeted by her warm smile and can count on her to assist them with their professional needs. Jody is dedicated to serving and developing relationships with her customers. Under Jody’s direction, TPM Services has become a staple in the community, by building effective relationships with customers, employers, and clients. Whether they’re sending staff to a Rockies game or volunteering at local charity events, the goal of TPM is to serve people on an individual level, and to meet the needs of the community. TPM assists both the employer and employee in finding the perfect candidates for a position, whether it’s part-time or seasonal. TPM staff are trained to effectively place employees based on their skill level.

A shopping experience
Welcome to Skadoodles….where your options are many, and limitations are few! From Gourmet Sauces, where owner Kim Beaver first began, to “made in the USA” and “made in Canada” clothing lines she is now introducing in her quaint little antique boutique store called Skadoodles. “Kim has always had many irons in the fire!”, says a close friend, “its never just one thing!” That’s probably why Skadoodles is such a good fit for this Castle Rock business owner of over 8 years! Skadoodles started on a whim, to support a local bakery as a “off site retail location”. Not wanting to be pinned down to only bakery items, the decision was to have gifts, gourmet foods and local fare as well as the fresh baked goods. Once the
owners of the bakery moved on to other ventures, Skadoodles underwent a small makeover and continued on. Now, Kim sees the little shop as constantly making little changes here and there to keep things fresh and current. Introducing a women’s clothing selection last year that has her customers asking for more, is the latest addition to Skadoodles’ eclectic variety. “Staying small, allows us to be more one on one with our customers. I think personal attention to detail, and actual customer service has gotten lost with a lot of businesses as they focus on the bottom dollar. We enjoy our customers and the constant variety Skadoodles brings, I can’t imaging doing anything else.” “Doing anything else”, is an understatement! Along with owning Skadoodles, Kim prepares the food for the Tea Room at Augustine Grill Restaurant (which is almost sold out for their holiday teas!), is a personal chef for a celebrity family, and devotes a percentage of her time to make sure she “gives back” to her community. Give Skadoodles a visit (Christmas time is magical there!) and say Hi to Kim and her wonderful friends who she says she couldn’t do it without their help! Skadoodles is located at 6th street and Wilcox in Castle Rock. 303 660-9993 Hours are Tuesday thru Saturday, 11am to 5pm.

Developmental Pathways – Celebrating 50 years On April 30, 2013, the Board of Directors for Developmental Pathways voted unanimously to appoint Ms. Melanie Worley as the CEO/Executive Director, after serving as the Interim CEO since April 2012. Before assuming the role of Interim CEO, Ms. Worley was the Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs for Developmental Pathways for three years. Prior to that she was the Douglas County Commissioner for 10 years, a small business owner, and a successful consultant.
In order to reach goals associated with the newly created strategic plan, she continues to strengthen relations with a number of potential community partners to help raise corporate sponsorship funding. Additional financial support is needed to serve over 2,000 individuals and their families with unmet needs.
Developmental Pathways is one of the largest nonprofit organizations in the state of Colorado, with operating revenues in excess of $40 million and over 600 employees. Developmental Pathways’ catchment area encompasses Arapahoe County, Douglas County and the City of Aurora.

In the last 18 months, Ms. Worley and her staff have completed a list of positive changes and major accomplishments including: • A comprehensive 3-year Strategic Plan with over 70 goals and 500 tactics • A redesign of the organization’s vision, mission statement and core values
When it comes to serving in the capacity of CEO/Executive Director, Ms. Worley takes a somewhat alternative approach, placing equal value on both the internal and external elements of the non-profit organization she oversees. This is an important factor for aligning the internal communications to match those of our valued partners and client families. Since being named the leader for Developmental Pathways, she has taken the 50-year old company to new heights and has successfully restructured the agency to reach its full potential.
