Our staff then compiled the votes using our certified electronic system and condensed it all down into this handy section.

If Clark Gable were alive today, he’d drink at Arvada Tavern. Mustaches, suspenders and vests abound in the mood-lit bar – the perfect setting for the tavern’s vintage craft cocktails, where the juice is squeezed daily, the mint is hand-picked and the ice is cut on site. In addition to timeless standbys like Manhattans, sidecars and mint juleps, the whiz-bang bartenders whip up seasonal creations to pair with an evolving dinner menu that includes schnitzel, salmon and quail. Keep coming back – there’s always something new to try.

History Arvada Tavern got its start in 1933 — the year Lady Liquor became legal again (in fact, it snagged Arvada’s first post-Prohibition liquor license). The building, which spent the dry years serving first as a blacksmith shop and later a livery, was restored to its former glory four years ago by owners Mike Huggins and Lenka Juchelkova. Discover a path to fun About the trail Arvada’s Ralston Creek Trail winds nearly 14 miles along the shady banks of its namesake creek, through hilly country on the west end, through a variety of parks and open areas, terminating at the lofty and dramatic Gold Strike Park Pedestrian Bridge on the east end. The trail connects to a network of other paths headed toward Golden or North Table Mountain, and parks along the way provide skateboarding and disc golf courses. The trail’s eastern terminus is at the northwest corner of I-76 and Sheridan Boulevard, and the western end is on 66th Avenue just east of Highway 93.

History Ralston Creek is named for Lewis Ralston, a Georgia prospector who found gold in the creek in 1850 on his way to California — eight years before William Green Russell’s gold strike in what is now Englewood set off the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Ralston was too excited for California to stick around, but the creek kept

A discipline for the ages What they do John Hallett and his wife, Jenny, are in the business of building self-confidence. Hallett’s gym, which offers classes in Crossfit, Yoga, mixed martial arts, Jiu Jitsu and more, specializes in Krav Maga, an Israeli self-defense form that focuses on practical applications. Hallett says too many martial arts schools focus on advancing students through levels and belts, whereas Krav Maga teaches real-world defense against even gun-wielding attackers. Rocky Mountain offers classes to students as young as 4, and their oldest student is 72.

History Hallett started teaching taekwondo and aikido on Nantucket Island, but felt the call of the West after visiting his brother, who was stationed at Fort Carson. Now in its 10th year, Rocky Mountain features a slew of beefy instructors for students looking to stand up for themselves or just melt away extra pounds in an encouraging environment.

Spring Valley is the “Cheers” bar of golf courses – where everybody knows your name. Unlike crowded public courses, at Spring Valley you’re a friend by your second visit. The par-72 course has drawn notables and hosted the CGA Match Play Qualifier. Spring Valley is home to a variety of men’s, women’s and junior leagues, a fully-stocked pro shop and a restaurant that hosts prime rib dinners on Fridays. Allen Kline’s maintenance crew keeps the greens immaculate.

History Originally a working 1,500-acre cattle ranch, landowners Ron and Sylvia Haynes began construction of the course in 1995, completing all 18 holes in 1998. The clubhouse underwent a substantial revamping in 2005. The course plays from 5,200 yards from the forward tees to 7,200 yards from the championship tees.

What they do Elbert County’s population may be small, but it’s home to big ideas and big talent. Home-based massage therapist Jenny West’s Facebook-based networking group draws together the dispersed and diverse businesses and services of the little prairie community of Elizabeth — and organizes help for folks in need. Jenny hosts regular events so neighbors can meet each other, patronize each other’s entrepreneurial enterprises and donate money to those in dire straits.

History Jenny started the group in 2013 after moving to Elizabeth from Parker and discovering there was little organization among businesses in the area. She invited every business in the area with a Facebook presence, and soon her events grew from a few attendees to dozens, including county and school officials. Today, the Facebook group boasts more than 1,300 members and is a lively roster of happenings.

This truck comes fully loaded What they do Ever had breakfast pizza? You might snag some from Rolling Dough, the food truck love child of friends Joseph Friedman and Tim Bennhoff. The duo’s menu includes chicken and waffles pizza, biscuits and gravy pizza, as well as classics like Margherita loaded with fresh basil and tomatoes. Their best seller is the bob-atillo, a pie topped with a tomatillo-based sauce, IPA-braised pork, red onions, queso fresco and fresh cilantro. Though they mostly stick around Golden, they’re starting to venture into Denver.

History Tim, a Colorado native from Georgetown, met Joseph, who came to Colorado by way of Chicago, five years ago when they worked at a pizza and bagel place in Golden. The two fast friends started dreaming up their food truck and developed a business plan while they worked together at Whole Foods. The dream became a reality two years ago, and they’ve

Painting a picture of success What they do Looking to impress a date with your artistic talent, even if you don’t have much? Try Art on the Brix, a “paint-and-sip” studio where, over the course of an evening, skilled instructors guide guests through creating works of art in a relaxed setting replete with wine and music. The studio also hosts summer camps for kids focused on media like metalwork, wax and screen printing. Art on the Brix also goes mobile, hosting on-site painting nights for parties and team-building exercises. They’re also ramping up painting days at local breweries, with popular “paint-your-growler” events.

History Alyssa Graves and her dad, Barry, started the business five years ago after attending a similar class elsewhere. Barry loves wine and Alyssa loves to paint, so they felt it was a natural endeavor. They’ve traveled as far as Black Hawk and Fort Collins to draw people together and get their creative juices flowing.

An emphasis on learning by doing What they do We may not have a ton of water in Colorado, but we sure play in what we have. Future cliff divers and kayakers would do well to get an early start on swimming skills at Waterworks, where highly-trained instructors oversee classes for students as young as 3 months. Waterworks uses a muscle memory technique in which instructors manipulate students’ limbs so they learn by doing, not just following instruction. Most classes max out at two students, so kids get individualized attention in Waterworks’ king-size pool. Waterworks also hosts parent-and-me classes and swim teams for more advanced amphibious youngsters.

Joaquin Tellez-Vega brings legends back from the dead. He and his team of experts breathe roaring new life into rusty old relics from the golden age of auto design, sourcing parts from friends or the internet when possible, and rebuilding or fabricating everything else. The shop also lends its expertise to collision repair on newer (though more boring) cars.

History Joaquin, a native of Mexico City who came to Denver to be near his wife’s family, started out doing collision work. He founded Rocky Mountain Customs and Classics in 2013. Andrew Barnett, the elder, and Robert, the younger (who just finished his sophomore year at Chaparral High School), say guests in their tap room can expect sociable session beers, not so high-alcohol that you can only knock back one before ending up schnockered. Wheat Ridge Poultry and Meats prepares, smokes and slices theirs in-house, and it’s available in flavors like jalapeño red pepper. It’s nearly impossible to leave the shop without an armload of delicious meals-to-be, including grass-finished steaks, free-range chicken, fresh frozen pasta, locally made pickles and jams, and a growing list of seafood.

History The shop started as an egg farm on the corner of 29th and Depew in 1942. Over time, the farm was converted to a shopping center and the product line was increased. Wheat Ridge Poultry and Meats has been family owned and operated since day one, and is run by the second generation of the Bobitsky family.
