The fair opens Wednesday, July 31, with events and attractions for the whole family. Enjoy 4-H displays, livestock exhibits, commercial exhibits, the rodeo, truck pull, demolition derby and Fiesta Day. This year, we are offering FREE parking on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Parking on Saturday and Sunday will be $5 per car. Special activities include Baby Boomers & Beyond Breakfast on Thursday, Aug.1, at 8:30 a.m., followed by entertainment, a resource fair and BINGO! 9NEWS Kids Day at the Fair is on Friday, Aug. 2, featuring an educational resource fair, bounce houses, Royalty Corner, pony rides, petting zoo, corn and bean box, Kiddie Land, Agri Land, Safety Land, Adams County Sheriff ’s Office, Brighton Fire Rescue District fire trucks and much more.

2013 Adams County Fair Queen makes plan for after reign

tkranz@ourcoloradonews.com In less than a year, the 2013 Adams County Fair queen will hand over her crown in exchange for a pair of wings – Air Force wings, that is. Alexandra “Alex” Nelms of Thornton is going into the military after her reign as queen ends. “It opens the doors for me to travel and get my foot in the door in an honorable way,” the 19-year-old said. Nelms is currently studying graphic design and business marketing at Larimer County Community College in Wyoming. Her dream, she said, is to eventually work for Disney, but the Air Force seems a more realistic goal at this point in her life. Until then, however, Nelms will focus on her duties as the queen, which entail charity work and making appearances at parades and other functions such as the Greeley Stampede, Cheyenne Frontier Days, and of course, the events at the 2013 Adams County Fair. “As the 2013 Adams County Fair Queen, Alex brings a wealth of knowledge in the equestrian field, innovative ideas to enhance the royalty program and the patience of a queen who cares about the future of our children,” said Mary Willis, fair co-chair. Nelms is from Thornton and graduated from Mountain Range High School last year. She is an accomplished “trick rider” and is an alumnus of the Westernaires organization, where she learned a lot about horsemanship and drill maneuvers. “Since I was able to sit up, my mom had me on a horse,” she said. She will be riding her horse, Apollo, for her royalty appearances. Feeling at home in front of a crowd as much as on a horse is something Nelms has been able to achieve last year as she

She credited that accomplishment to the 2012 Adams County Fair Queen Danielle McCormick. “Danielle was able to help me learn how to better present myself, she brought up my self-confidence quite a bit,” Nelms said. She wants to be sure to be a good influ-

ence on her own lady in waiting, Savanna Hamilton of Brighton. “I want to make sure I make a good impression and am remembered as a good queen and that I set a good example for Savanna,” Nelms said. Nelms is the daughter of Kristin Vigil and the older sister of Raena, 6, and Andrew, 7.

Waiting for her turn to shine By Ashley Reimers

areimers@ourcoloradonews.com Lady in Waiting Savanna Hamilton is gearing up for her future rein as the Adams County Fair Queen. But until that happens, she’s following in current queen Alex Nelms footsteps, learning the ropes on what it takes to be queen. “I’m like Alex’s side kick, that’s what I like to say,” Hamilton said. “I’m watching what she does and learning what it takes to be queen so that when I’m crowned as queen next March I’ll know what to do.” Hamilton, 16 from Brighton, was crowned Lady in Waiting in April. She always wanted to be a Lady in Waiting, but figured it would be when she was out of high school. When she received a letter in the mail last December regarding the competition, she decided to go for it.

Hamilton attended a preparation clinic with seven other girls vying for the spot of Lady in Waiting. By the time the competition rolled around, she was ready. “I felt prepared for the competition but it was still a long day,” she said. “When they called my name, my first thought was I was happy it was over and I could go home. But then it hit me that I was chosen and I was very surprised. It took me a long time to process.” Hamilton’s other interests include 4-H and hippology, which is the study of horses, and horse bowl, which is a competitive game that tests a team’s knowledge of horses, horse judging and horse demonstration. Hamilton said through hippology she’s gained an in-depth perspective and education on horses, which helps with her relationship with her own horse, Syrah.

“Now when I can tell something is wrong with my horse, I can actually figure it out and know how to help,” she said. “I’ve learned so much from hippology and from 4-H in general, life lessons that I’ve learned outside of school.” During the Adams County

Fair this year, Hamilton will bring her horse along to give the community an opportunity to see and touch Syrah. She says it’s important to her to share her horse knowledge and Syrah with people who don’t have the chance to spend time with horses.

Olympics After countless hours of time spent working on their 4-H projects and the stress of competing at the county fair, the 4-H kids are ready to let off a little steam when it’s all over. The 4-H Olympics slated for Sunday, Aug. 4 at 10 a.m. will be a weekend wind-down with fun activities and a barbecue. The kids have been competing in different ways and the 4-H Olympics is a way to join them back together as a club with water balloon tosses, egg tosses, wheelbarrow races, sack races and more. It’s the perfect way to let the kids have fun while celebrating their hard work and achievements.

Recreation projects get funding County doles out open space grants By Tammy Kranz

Adams County and several of its cities will benefit from almost $3.5 million in open space grants. The Board of Commissioners awarded 17 grants in May after receiving recommendations by the Open Space Advisory Board. The money comes from the Open Space Sales Tax, which was passed by voters in 1999. The tax is one-fifth of 1 percent sales tax. “All the parks receiving a grant … are within neighborhoods and are among the most visited in our entire park system,” said board chair Eva J. Henry. “From recreation center renovations to trail construction, we're funding many different types of projects in this cycle.” The city of Thornton received two grants for a total of $1,062,822 for the Thornton Sports Complex expansion and the Northaven Park and Greenway rehabilitation. The total cost of the sports complex expansion is $995,041. The open space grant was $497,520 — the city will use its parks and open space sales tax revenues to fund the rest of the project. “The purchase of the 11.5 acres of future park land on the southwest corner of 104th Avenue and McKay Road will increase the size

of the 25-acre complex by almost one half, and provide much needed room for expansion of ball fields or parking,” said Diane Van Fossen, capital projects and planning manager with the city. The funding also supports the purchase of 7.5 water shares from the Colorado Agricultural Ditch Company, which is included with the land and a portion of the construction costs to deliver the water as a non-potable source to the Thornton Sports Complex for irrigation, she added. The city has not set a timeline for the development of the new park land, which is currently being leased for agricultural use. The total cost of the

Northaven Park and Greenway rehabilitation is $912,302. The open space grant was for $565,302, the remainder of the project costs are being paid from the city's 30 percent distribution of the Adams County Open Space sales tax revenues. The city will rehabilitate the 14.5 acres and greenway at 4485 Northaven Circle. “This project replaces an aged and inefficient irrigation system in the park and greenway corridor and will incorporate water wise design principles,” Van Fossen said. “The work also expands the green grass play area between the park and adjacent Skyview Elementary School and incorporates a new neighborhood playground,

which did not previously have one.” Construction is expected to begin next summer. Northglenn will combine the $200,000 grant it received with the $200,000 it has set aside in the 2013 budget to fund renovations to the locker rooms at the recreation center located at 11701 Community Center Drive. "It's been long awaited for,” said Northglenn Mayor Joyce Downing. “I've had a lot of comments about the locker rooms, so I know it'll be well received." cy for guests using showers and providing direct access from both the men's and women's locker rooms to the pool area. The four-month long projected is expected to begin late this year. Other local recreation projects that were awarded grants include: • $434,000 for Westminster's Tanglewood Creek Regional Trail project — constructing a segment of trail along Tanglewood Creek, near Delaware Street between 120th and 128th avenues. The city also plans to make some creek and wetland improvements to prevent further erosion of the creek channel. • $607,899 for Westminster's Big Dry Creek Open Space Buffer project — the city plans to purchase a 9.91-acre buffer property near Big Dry Creek at 112th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard. • $600,000 for Adams County's Rotella Park Master Plan Improvements — the county plans to improve Rotella Park, York Street and Coronado

As farms got bigger, farmers had to figure out ways to milk

more cows in less time. Today's farmers have computers and machines that help milk and take care of hundreds of cows. Farmers have special barns and equipment that help them keep their cows healthy. The food they feed the cows is a mix of green grasses, corn, vitamins and minerals that helps the cow produce high quality milk. So stop by and visit Betsy, the cow milking simulator!

County restructures, creates new department Neighborhood Services led by area native

As part of an effort to better address quality of life issues for its residents, Adams County has established a Neighborhood Services Department and hired an area native to lead it. Raymond Gonzales of Westminster serves as the director of the new department, which incorporates the Animal Shelter & Adoption Center, Building Inspection, Code Compliance, Community Development and the Stormwater Utility program. “With a commitment to better serve our residents, we will be focusing on streamlining county services, expanding community outreach, and enhancing citizen engagement opportunities so we can understand how best to support the needs of the neighborhoods,” said Ruth Kedzior, assistant county administrator. Kedzior said the restructure was accomplished without additional expenditures outside of Gonzales’ annual salary of $117,500. Gonzales was born and raised in Brighton and received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Regis University-School

of Management in Denver. He said the commissioner’s decision to create the department demonstrates their visionary approach to better serve the residents in the county. Some of Gonzales goals are to make the county more approachable for residents, to spread the word about the good work it is doing and to hold town hall meetings to build community engagement. “One of my priorities for the Neighborhood Services Department is to become a high performing organization in the county focused on a customer-centric culture that embraces high quality customer service,” he said. All of this is part of ongoing efforts to mend relationships with residents after several news-making scandals involving county officials and employees. “I think the county has taken significant strides in overcoming those issues and making the necessary changes to earn the trust and respect of the Adams County community and that’s one of the reasons I joined the county, because I want to be part of that change,” he said. It is not common for counties to have a department similar to Neighborhood Services, Gonzales said, “however, I do believe we’ll be trendsetters and in six to 12 months we’ll be looked at as a model for other counties.” There are more than

90,000 residents who live in unincorporated Adams County and more than 350,000 residents who live in the incorporated part of the county. Before his new position with the county, Gonzales was the vice president of

business and economic development for SOS Employment Group. Before that, he served as assistant city manager for Brighton and as the director of the Brighton Economic Development Corporation.

Self-sustaining farm was part of Brighton history By Sandi Austin

saustin@ourcoloradonews.com Times were tough in the late 1890s, and especially hard on the elderly, the poor, and the disabled veterans who had no place to call home. The Denver Farm – nicknamed Poor Farm – was established to allow some relief for Denver General Hospital, which at that time was becoming overcrowded with indigent patients. In 1898, for $30,000, Arapahoe County purchased land near East 124th Avenue and Henderson Road to form a home for the poor and destitute in the county. Buildings were completed and residents moved in a little over one year later. When Arapahoe County was split up into three counties, the Denver Farm became part of the newly organized Adams County, but was still under the control of the City and County of Denver, as it was a subsidiary of Denver General Hospital.

Between 1908 and 1917, the Great Western Sugar Company transported 6,000 acres of contracted sugar beets by railroad across the Denver Farm property. Under the guidance of two of its most agriculture-savvy superintendents, Harold Moore and Harold Lascelles, the Denver Farm began making a name for itself as a showplace of efficiency. The farm was totally self-supporting, raising everything from butcher animals and milk cows to eggs and vegetables. The farm’s herd of prize-winning Holstein cows established nation-wide recognition four times with the Progressive Breeders Award of the Holstein-Friesian Association of America. Married employees with families lived in homes on the grounds, while single employees shared a bunkhouse. The poor, homeless and disabled war veterans lived in the two-story complexes – or dormitories. All the buildings had cast iron radiators for heat in the winter months. The steam to those radiators traveled through underground

tunnels that originated from the powerhouse boiler room. The tunnels were large enough for workers to walk through them for inspection or repairs. Albert Foos, long-time resident of the Brighton area, remembers his childhood on the farm where his parents worked. “My family lived on the top floor of a large house where cheese and butter were processed on the main floor,” Foos said. When he was old enough, Foos was allowed to work on the farm by pushing a mower around the large lawns bordered by flowerbeds. Eventually, he drove the steel-wheeled tractors that worked the fields alongside the horse teams. If they were able to, many older residents walked to Henderson, where they socialized at the general store or the post office. They also enjoyed fishing at a nearby slough bridge and taking their catches to the kitchen, where emContinued next page

ployees cleaned and cooked them. “It was really a big happy family at the farm,” Foos recalled. “Everyone was free to wander around the grounds, pitch horseshoes or play cards and checkers. They had a lot of freedom.” The land that once was home to the poor farm was acquired from Denver in 1960 for $176,500. There are no longer any signs of the farm, but the land is now buzzing with activity on its 180-acre golf course, 60-acre fairgrounds, and expansive recreational grounds. But for people like Albert Foos, who were around during those days, the Poor Farm remains a vivid part of their memory. This story was originally published in the 2006 Adams County Fair Guide.

New activities debut at Adams County Fair By Ashley Reimers

areimers@ourcoloradonews.com This year at the Adams County Fair, the Platte Valley Medical Center Children’s Pavilion is the place to be for fun and free entertainment. New activities are debuting under the tent, ones that involve the whole family. “The children’s pavilion is an essential part of the fair providing an area for children of all ages to have a little fun,” said Melanie Snodell, co-fair manager. Almost everything in the pavilion is free, except for a minimal fee for pony rides. “In addition to the carnival, which does cost, we feel it’s very important to provide free activities to the community,” Snodell said. “We want to make sure everyone, even people on a budget, can have a lot of fun at the fair.” New to the children’s pavilion are the Free-to-do-Redneck Games and the Lagoon of Doom, both activities that are suitable for the entire family. Snodell said the Redneck Games are similar to the TV show Wipeout, challenging people to make it through an obstacle

course without falling off. She said it’s not as intense as Wipeout, but still a lot of fun. “Lagoon of Doom is like the Redneck Games, but with fewer obstacles,” she said. “Part of the course resembles a log spinning on the water, but it’s not really a log and you don’t fall into water.” An educational piece is also being added to the children’s pavilion this year. Agriland will be a section dedicated to the heritage and history of agriculture with informational displays and agriculture-related activities teaching children about where their food comes from. Snodell said the section is part of an effort to bring education back to the fair, something that hasn’t been a strong fair focus in recent years. “We are hoping to bring the education piece back this year, especially in preparation for our 110th year anniversary next year,” she said. “We want to teach kids that their food doesn’t just come from a store, that people in their community are providing food.” The fair also has one day –

The county’s ‘hidden gem’ Regional Park offers wide variety of activities By Tammy Kranz tkranz@ourcoloradonews.com

With two golf courses, two fishing lakes, trails and a nature preserve among other things, the Regional Park offers more than the setting for the Adams County Fair every year. “The Regional Park hosts over 800 events annually ranging from livestock shows to weddings and quinceaneras (celebration for a girl’s 15th birthday),” said Melanie Snodell, co-fair manager. The park, 9755 Henderson Road in Brighton, has about 310,000 visitors annually, with about 60,000 of those for the county fair, said Kurt Carlson, Regional Park manager. “There is such a variety of things to do here,” he said. “The size, diversity and wonderful setting just lend itself for a place to get away from the urban setting. We’re kind of a hidden gem out here.” The park used to be home to Henderson Island, which was the first permanent settlement in the South Platte River Valley. In 1859, Jack Henderson built a ranch, trading post and hotel on Henderson Island, according to Wikipedia. The land later became the Denver Poor Farm and was purchased by Adams County from the City and County of Denver on April 11, 1960. “The deed stated the property included about 180 acres that was intended to be used

for a golf course, 60 acres to construct a fairgrounds and the remainder for recreational uses,” Carlson said. “Today, the Adams County Regional Park and Fairgrounds encompasses over 1,150 acres and shares the space with the Adams County Historical Society/Museum and two 18-hole Championship Golf Courses (Riverdale Knolls and Dunes).” The golf course clubhouse has a restaurant, banquet facilities and is the home of the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame. “It truly has it all for the serious or novice golfing enthusiast,” Carlson said. The park manages seven major indoor facilities which include the Parks and CSU Extension Administration Building, Waymire Dome, Al Lesser Building, exhibit hall, indoor arena, Old Red Cross Building and the sale barn. “Most of the facilities were constructed in the mid- to late-1960s,” he said. “The Al Lesser Building was renovated in 2003, the exhibit hall was renovated in 2005 and the Waymire Dome Building was redesigned renovated/remodeled in 2008.” Various groups rent out the facilities throughout the year. There are also plenty of outdoor activities that attract visitors — two fishing lakes that are regularly stocked by the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife, two outdoor riding arenas, a large Grandstand Arena (which had improvements made in 2010 to include more efficient lighting and better accessibility) that seats about 3,600 people,

There are also 23 recreational vehicle spaces with water and electric hookups, sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits and a playground. There is also a designated area for a nature preserve. “The Nature Preserve features many different kinds of wildlife, including bald eagles,” Snodell said. “Pelicans visit the Regional Park Lakes each spring and fall in their migration north and south. County park still evolving Trail expansion, new fishing lakes on the horizon By Tammy Kranz

tkranz@ourcoloradonews.com The Adams County Regional Park has evolved a lot since it was purchased in 1960. It has gone from 180 to 1,150 acres and the evolution continues. Kurt Carlson, park manager, highlighted two future projects that will add to the park’s attraction for users — the addition of about 300 acres, which will include three new fishing lakes and extending the South Platte River Trail. “(The 300 acres) has been part of the Regional Park for some time. It used to be farmland, but was mined for gravel since the mid-1980s and will now be reclaimed as three interconnected (lakes),” Carlson said. “Once the area is fully reclaimed, the (lakes) will be filled by a third party.” Of the 300 acres, one lake will have 45

surface acres, a second 59 and the third 56, according to Carlson. “Therefore the expansion will increase our water surface acreage by 160 acres with the three new lakes,” he said. The park already has two fishing lakes that total nearly 95 surface acres and are regularly stocked by the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife. Carlson said the project will take time as there is a lot of work needed to be done related to reclamation and water rights. Another project on the horizon is the expansion of the 9-mile South Platte Trail, which runs alongside the eastern edge of Regional Park. The trail is part of the Colorado Front Range Trail, which will eventually create an 876-mile trail from Wyoming to New Mexico. According to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website, http://parks.state.co.us, more than 270 miles of the trail have been finished, which represents one-third of the corridor. “There are currently two missing links of the South Platte River Trail in Adams County — a section of trail needs to be

Photo provided by Adams County constructed on the northern end from Brighton Road/E-470 to Brighton and from 120th to 104th avenues (just south of the Regional Park),” Carlson said. “The trail is complete from 140th to Chatfield Reservoir. Once the two missing links are completed, a trail user could potentially start in Brighton and take the trail southwest until you reach Chatfield Reservoir in Littleton and beyond.”

areimers@ourcoloradonews.com Not one day is the same for Tim Ferrell, owner of Berry Patch Farms in Brighton. He wakes up to a new challenge every day, which for him is the reason he’s been growing and raising fruit and vegetables since the 1980s. “The best part about my job is the fact that it’s never boring,” he said. “There’s always some kind of challenge to face, which is good.” Tim and his wife Claudia started their life in farming with a small plot of land. Then years later they expanded to their current 40-acre farm, Berry Patch Farms in 1998. The couple now grows and sells a large variety of fruits and vegetables, with strawberries, raspberries, cantaloupe, watermelons, tomatoes and lettuce at the top of the list for most people. Tim says Claudia does a great job selecting items that will sell the easiest. “When we first started we were using only half of the property. But now we use every space of the property and could easily do more,” Tim said. “Claudia really knows how to select the best fruits and vegetables that can do well in the climate and produce well.” Berry Patch Farms isn’t just a place where people can shop for certified organic fruits and veggies, it also has an education element. Tim hosts school field trips and summer camp field trips teaching youngsters the importance of agriculture. He said many times the children who come out have never been on a farm before. “This kind of field trip is different than going to the museum,” he said. “The children get to learn about agriculture and also see some chickens, which for some kids, is also the first time they’ve ever seen a chicken.” Preserving farm land and agriculture has always been important to Tim and Claudia. Soon after they bought the farm property, the couple converted their property into a conservation easement with Adams County, meaning their land

will never be eligible for development. Tim said the decision to give up any developmental rights was exactly what he wanted to do. And now he’s hoping other farmers in

Participating in 4-H has always been a part of Rosie Scanlon’s life. The Adams County resident did the traditional 4-H projects like cooking and sewing as a child, and later got involved with her daughters’ 4-H endeavors — including rabbit judging. After her girls graduated from high school, Scanlon took a short break from 4-H before becoming a 4-H leader. Now, after 21 years of dedicated work as a leader in the program, Scanlon has been named the Adams County Outstanding 4-H Leader of the Year. “It was an amazing surprise,” she said. “There are so many leaders out there who work hard, so this is a very elite honor for me.” Scanlon was nominated by someone in the 4-H community, and then she was interviewed by a judge, before she was chosen as 4-H Leader of the Year. Nominees are judged on years of service, activity level, leadership skills, accomplishments in

4-H and efforts taken above and beyond normal commitment. Melanie Snodell, who works in the Adams County Extension office, said Scanlon is a great choice because she has dedicated so many years to 4-H. “She’s an amazing lady,” Snodell said. Scanlon is a leader for rabbit judging due to her daughters’ participation in the program years ago. She says after the girls left home, the rabbits stayed, and now the animals are a big part of her life. Not only does she teach youngsters how to thoroughly judge a rabbit, she also personally shows rabbits at shows throughout the state. She has four different types of rabbits she shows: American Sables, French Lops, Cinnamons and Himalayans. Scanlon’s 4-H students also show rabbits, along with their rabbit judging program. “Taking care of rabbits and showing rabbits is just as time consuming and important for children as it is for the kids who raise and show the larger livestock like swine and steers,” she

It takes a lot of dedication.” Teaching and spending time with youngsters is what kept Scanlon in 4-H for so long. The opportunity to see the light bulb go off in a child is something Scanlon says she truly enjoys.

She believes 4-H allows children to learn life skills, and teaches them responsibility and good sportsmanship. “It’s all about having fun and doing your best, and that’s what 4-H teaches the kids,” she said. “If you want a way to broaden a child’s horizon, there’s nothing better than 4-H to start the process.”

Advisory board is link between community and fair The Adams County Fair has been a proud tradition for the past 109 years, becoming a direct source of community pride and promoting good will among county residents. It provides an educational showcase for county residents and 4-H members to exhibit their accomplishments in the areas of agriculture, livestock, art, science, home economics, arts, crafts and food. Numerous entities work together to put on the fair every year, complying with policies and procedures set by the Board of County Commissioners. The Adams County Fair Advisory Board was established as an advisory board to the Board of County Commissioners un-

der the direction of the Adams County Parks Department and Co-Fair Managers. “We are appointed by the county commissioners and act in an advisory capacity for the management staff of the Adams County Fair,” said Bill Scebbi, the western community representative of the board. “The advisory board is the outreaching arm to residents of the area. People come to us at our monthly committee hearings with ideas, issues or changes they would like to see for their county fair. It’s really good to have people in the community be involved with the fair because it’s a value for families that really showcases our heritage and who we are.”
