Exploring folklore in Arvada A look at the famous hackberry tree
SHANNA FORTIER SFORTIER@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

ll things Arvada will be celebrated at the 92nd annual Arvada Harvest Festival, which will traverse upon Olde Town Arvada September 8, 9 and 10. Started in October 1925 as a celebration of the first paved road connecting Arvada to Denver this years festival will will focus of fantasy, fairy tales and folklore as a theme. To explore some of Arvada’s folklore, the Arvada Press connected with Nancy Young, researcher and volunteer with the Arvada Historical Society. Young shared the story of the city’s Hackberry Tree. When the first settlers arrived in Arvada, there were virtually no trees except for a few cottonwoods along the river, Young explained. But there was a lone hackberry tree standing on a tall hill. The tree, Young said, was revered by the early settlers. But how the tree got there, no one really knows. Hackberry trees are not native to the area. “The existence of that tree was documented by a botanist with John Fremont’s expedition of 1843,” Young said. “There are dozens of
stories of how it got there.” One story Young relayed is of a great medicine man who planted hackberry trees on top of hills as alters. But, this is called into question, Young said, because there are no other known hackberry trees planted on hills in the area. Another favorite story, Young said, is that a great Native American chief was killed in battle in the Clear Creek Valley and was buried on top of the hill with a pouch of hackberry seeds that eventually sprouted and grew a tree. T In the 1930s, Colorado Department of Transportation said the tree would need to be moved to straighten Wadsworth Boulevard, which was originally built to curve around the tree. Young said that history reports that Arvada citizens were very con-

cerned about saving the tree and requested that it be relocated instead of cut down. CDOT was honoring their wishes. But one morning, the town woke up and the tree had been cut down in the middle of the night. The remains of the tree were taken to a warehouse under the
water tower in what is now Olde Town, where citizens were invited to take a piece of the tree. Young said that a cross cut was send to an dendrochronologist, who determined that the hackberry tree began to grow in 1807 — around the same time as the Louis and Clarke expedition. “If there were any human remains in 1937, nobody cared,” Young said, adding that with the tree gone, CDOT promptly straightened Wadsworth. “They just dug out the highway and hauled the dirt off. So, we will never know. There’s no proof if the Indian chief was buried there.”

arly in the morning, the sounds of instruments warming up, dancers practicing leaps and turns, and parade participants putting on the final touches on their floats could be heard throughout Olde Town. It’s time for the Grand Parade to begin. Every year since 1925, the Arvada Harvest Festival has honored the history and heritage of Arvada, and the best way they do that is in three days of fun. Here, last year’s festival participants marched down Ralston Road, between Olde Wadsworth and Independence Street, performing a variety of dances, songs and acts for an audience of more than 6,000 residents and community members. In this year’s parade marching bands, dance troupes, and community groups will perform along the same route, to the theme of “Fantasy, Fairy tales and Folklore.” This year’s main judging stand will be on the south side of Ralston Road, near Garrison Street. Along with the fan-favorite parade, the annual event will feature something for everyone — a selection of beer to sample, live music, a pancake breakfast, a farmers market, a kids zone, a fun run and more!
